A Day in a student’s life in Haikus

Introductory Comments: During the month of January, the sophomores studied poetry. They studied how poets write, what tools poets use, and how poets think. They read everything from modern poets to Shakespeare. They studied the forms, the structures and the images poets use to speak to us. They studied the heck out of poetry. In the end, they became poets themselves, exploring their lives in the Japanese haiku form. The subject of the collection of poems is “A Day In The Life.” We took the idea from the old Beatles song of the same name where Lennon and McCartney described what they did on a given day. They worked hard in crafting their poems and wrote from their hearts. I had fun watching them become published poets. I hope you enjoy reading their poems as much as I have. Mr. Michael Donohue

My poems are about things that are happening in the mind of humans. What people sometimes go through, the first two poems use nature as a way to represent a human. The last two poems explore anxiety, and rethinking who you are.

A mental storm By-Isaiah Jean-Louis

Soul of Nature

Tree wither and break slow Also like a human’s heart But humans feel more.

Stuck in beautiful time Like a small flower A flower in quicksand stuck Sinking forever. In your head

The voice convinces Ignoring the heart The voice clouds judgment

Conscience Anxiety

“Who am I” repeats The phrase repeats all the time Living doubtfully.

In my haiku, I have three lines with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second line, and 5 syllables in the third line. My haiku is talking about a day in my life. What I do in the morning, at school, and after school.

I then took the train. I then walked to the bus stop. The bus leads to school.

Return home I greet everyone. I start to do my homework. I then eat dinner. Dinner

I ate spaghetti. With a side of toasted bread. The bread is crunchy.

Even with small differences throughout a day at the end it all felt the same.

Nothing New D’Erick Morales

Morning Ride Getting in the car

Warm and comfy all but new A repeated ride

Heavy eyes, distant mind

Eyes closed once again Words are spoken but not heard A dream I must stop

Passing time

Sitting with water Taking sips to pass the time Surrounded but bored

7,G,L

A path repeated With screeching stops and loud talks Nothing to do now

You need to find certain words that fit perfectly with what you're trying to describe and you need to have the 5 syllables in the first and last line and 7 in the second.

Single day By- Aiden Olari A sense

A smell filled the air As i awaken from my sleep Coffee fills the air

Familiar feeling

sit alone eating A familiar feeling can sense loneliness

A new place

I await my bus As it takes me away From this place home

Nerves

I enter my class Eyes roaming everywhere My palms start to sweat

These haikus are about my day and the everyday stresses that I go through during the day.

Long days. By- Jahanara Razack.

Alarm.

Long nights with bad sleep. The blaring sounds pierce my ears, rolling out of bed.

Bell.

Waiting for the bell. Trying not to fall asleep, Staring at the board.

Afternoon sprint.

Quick runs to gain speed. Looking up at the pink sky, Feeling very peaceful.

Trying to sleep.

Late nights, loud noises. Stressing about the next day, Staring at the wall.

I would use my haiku to show how I live through my days and what I do each and every day and how I live my days as a student athlete and I wanted to show how I feel throughout my day. I want the listener to get the message that no matter how hard life is, there are always good days within the storm.

Good day - By Robert Roman The beginning

Wake up take my shower go eat breakfast that i enjoy Take the bus to school

My way home

Walking home all alone With no care in the world Good days nice laughs

Hits hits

Working hard work hard So i can shine through Hit hit just tryna do

Making my way

Take the bus to school I look at the light blue sky Then arrive to my school

I would use my haiku to show how I live through my days and what I do each and every day and how I live my days as a student athlete and I wanted to show how I feel throughout my day. I want the listener to get the message that no matter how hard life is, there are always good days within the storm

Life as a student athlete By: mohamet seck

Start of my day

I wake up and eat Then i hop in the shower Then i get ready

My way to school

I wait for my dad Then i get a ride to school I get to the school

Practice

I get to practice Then i get ready to ball Then i go back home

This type of poem was way more difficult to make than I originally imagined. I am usually a pretty literal person but in order to fit the format and requirement of a haiku, I needed to cut some stuff out and be a little more vague.

Day in the life By Nicolas Woods

The Commute

Get into the car Sleep in the car for awhile Drives a little far School is gonna take awhile

School day

Ring ring ring ring ring The bells going on and off Work work work work work I think it is time for lunch

Lunch

Walk to the lunchroom I could smell the food from here Sit down, eat and speak Have math next, is what I fear

Returning home

Finally back home Cat will greet me at the door Do some homework sure Take shower and go to snore
