I really want to acknowledge your partnership and support of your students as they engage in formal and informal learning. I have watched your students embrace opportunities to undertake competitions, apply for student leadership positions, be part of the Performing Arts Centre Opening, play sport, engage in a French breakfast, design posters for Fringe, create art, perform in the Arts Showcase, join in an online conference with Asahi High School, raise money for important causes, create many live streams, celebrate through our Senior Speech Assembly, prepare for a sustainability market… and more… and this is just in the past 3 weeks.

These experiences create the opportunities for our students to develop the skills, qualities and capabilities that will help them thrive in what we know is an unexpected future. Thank you for being part of your student’s learning at Adelaide High School.

I want to share with you one of the many projects we are undertaking to prepare for Year 7 students joining Adelaide High School in 2022. Jack Cunningham, Data and Improvement Leader, has been working closely with Connie Soltysiak, Principal Consultant (Adelaide Prospect Partnership), Michael Gurr, Middle School Assistant Principal, and Year 7 teachers: • Sam Hutton - East Adelaide Schools • Deb McMahon - Gilles Street Primary • Kerryn Giurastante - Prospect Primary • Tony Crampsas - Nailsworth PS • Kath Gemmell - North Adelaide PS • Elleni Papageorgio and Kristen Gilbert - Walkerville PS They have been working together to create a plan to enable seamless transition and information transfer for Year 7 students moving to high school. A key element of this project is to ensure information related to how each student learns is transferred effectively to the high school, and then key information is distributed to the leaders and teachers to shape their understanding of the students and therefore influence learning design and pedagogy.

It has been fantastic to work closely with our primary colleagues and to have the opportunity to co-design transition.

by the Honourable John Gardner, Rick Persse and Cez Green opened the centre and marked a new era of Performing Arts Education at Adelaide High School.

Adelaide High has retained the Les Burdett Trophy by winning the State Schools Final on November 2. With Matchett, Connor Kent and Marshall all bowling well, we kept Henley to a modest total of 117 before Sharma and Mangelsen gave us a great base to chase the total down - with a couple of hiccups - with half of our overs to spare.

The Adelaide High School Street Band entertained guests and the dynamic Media Club captured this event which we have shared with our school community.

Jack Matchett was our player of the match with 3/16 and bowled with great pace and control.

It was a wonderful to have The Honourable John Gardner, Minister for Education and Rick Persse, The Chief Executive, Department for Education officially open the Adelaide High School newly refurbished Performing Arts Centre on October 16, 2020.

JPE’s design team proved they can create spaces that are adaptable and responsive to change, and the Performing Arts students embraced all spaces, showcasing dance, drama and music. The open spaces allowed for creative collaborations and the interior design and decor simulated a theatrical environment. It was wonderful to see all areas vibrant with students performing and sharing their love of performing arts with the 200 visitors who attended.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE OPENING

LIVE AT THE CAPRI Adelaide High School is proud to present its end of year music concert, Live at the Capri. The event will take place at the Capri Theatre, 141 Goodwood Rd, Goodwood, on December 10. This concert event will feature all the newly developed ensembles as our Music program heads towards success in 2021.

Our community will witness and hear an eclectic range of music from Jazz, Rock, World, Soul, Motown, Ska, and Classical. Music staff and students are preparing for another major event which will showcase the learning, energy, passion and resilience that have been developed during the year.

Adelaide High School Live at the Capri will be a fundraising event which will also include some surprise performances from music and instrumental staff.

All tickets will be $15 and stay tuned for a booking link which will be forwarded shortly.

Last year, the ‘Respect Me’ fundraising event supported the Zahra Foundation Australia, as the AHS community came together to say ‘NO’ to men’s violence against women and children and raised over $1,000.

This year, on Friday Week 6, a ‘Respect Me’ fundraising event will again support Zahra Foundation Australia which provides programs and services to women and children affected by domestic and family violence.

BARTON BUNCH

During the school holidays, The Barton Bunch had the amazing opportunity of recording some of our songs at a professional recording studio. Using the funds we got from our inaugural concert in Term 3, we hired Mix Masters studio for one day. We had a great time recording one of our original songs written by Joel Sweet, as well as four covers of popular songs. At the start it was challenging for all of us as it was an entirely new experience and we struggled figuring out how everything worked. Luckily, our studio engineer Kiah was the kindest and most talented person on earth and helped us through it. We eventually got the hang of it and started feeling comfortable, recording full songs with only a few takes. Overall, this experience was incredible, and we are all so grateful we had this chance to record amazing and inspiring music with each other. Keep an eye out for our release in the coming weeks!

Another amazing gig we were presented with was playing at the Convention Centre for the SA Schools’ Leadership night. It was refreshing to play music in a separate venue from AHS and the people there were so kind and lovely. We played for student leaders from across the state, as well as highly acclaimed individuals such as the Honourable John Gardner and His Excellency Hieu Van Le. It was a fun night for the band and the audience, and we are all again very grateful for the opportunity.

Adelaide High has had a busy few weeks with sport. Tanio Barron, Tania Barron, Victtoria Acquaviva, Fetu Mapu, Bailey Pfeiffer and Evelin Harsanyi all competed for AHS in the VIVA SA All School Athletics Games on the weekend. Congratulations to Tanio who came 1st in the 100m and 3rd in the 200m sprint events, Fetu who came 1st in High Jump, Victtoria who came 3rd in Hurdles and Bailey who came 2nd in Javelin. The U17 Girls competed in the Junior League Volleyball Grand Final Friday night and walked away with a silver medal after a great season. Knockout sport has been keeping us busy with a huge number of teams competing these past few weeks.

The aim of the ‘Respect Me’ fundraising event is to raise awareness among AHS staff, students and their families of the importance of showing each other respect and understanding to generate a safer and fairer place for all members of our community.

SPORT REPORT

On Thursday, October 29, our Year 8 French students caught up for le petit déjeuner to enjoy French viennoiseries handcrafted by Guillaume Blanc, the pastry chef and owner of La Madeleine on Norwood Parade. Students indulged in un croissant, a world-wide known delicacy which French people love for breakfast on weekends, and not every day as it might be generally thought. It would not be a French breakfast without the chocolate croissant, ie le pain au chocolat, which literally translates to ‘the chocolate bread’. Even though when we think of a croissant we generally connect it to France, the croissant and chocolate croissant are of Austrian origin, more exactly, the Vienna cuisine. Hence the name in French – les viennoiseries, i.e. the Vienna-style pastries.

The French breakfast aligns with a Term 4 topic, as Year 8 students learn how to talk about their eating habits. During the French breakfast, students were able to put their knowledge from the classroom into practice by having conversations in French with their peers as well as our French language assistant Chloé, Mme LeDolédec and Mme Boskovic. We concluded our breakfast with a jolly song in French and a video on how croissants are made. It takes hours to make the pastries, however, it took us a couple of minutes to make them all disappear.

LIFE WILL SMILE Our Year 10 Class was privileged to spend an afternoon interviewing the Greek director, Steven Priovolos, director of the compelling documentary Life Will Smile. The film tells the story of the only complete Jewish community that survived the Holocaust on the Greek Island of Zakynthos. It was clear that the class was humbled by the experience. Interviewing Steven who is currently in the US, highlighted the global connection of the diaspora and the take home message of courage, peace and humanity.

7 DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS

ARTS SHOWCASE On October 28, Adelaide High School Middle School Arts students performed in the 2020 Semester 2 Arts Showcase. Music, Dance and Drama students performed pieces they had been working on in class, and the Visual Arts students proudly presented their work in the foyer.

Día de los Muertos is an important celebration in Mexico and other parts of South America which dates back to the Aztec Empire. Students of Spanish in Years 8 and 9 have engaged in a poster competition expressing their knowledge of Mexican culture and then writing in Spanish about what they have learnt.

Over 230 students performed for family and friends, showcasing the immense talent that AHS has to offer. For many, this was their first time performing on stage. The pride and joy on each student’s face were infectious, which left the audience buzzing with excitement as they congratulated all the performers.

Highlights include our very first Middle School Band performance, an army of Year 9 guitarists (+10) rocking out to ‘Sunshine of

Your Love’, our 40+ Year 8 dancers filling the stage with colour, enthusiasm and crazy tricks, a stunning demonstration of Year 9/10 Dance compositions, and an exciting but ‘Revoltin’ finale performance from our Musical Theatre Group.

All in all, it was a fantastic night of talent, which demonstrated the hard work of our Arts’ students. Thank you to all who were involved.

(MINI) STREET BAND’S PRIMARY SCHOOL TOUR At the end of Term 3, some of the members from our Adelaide High School Street Band went to various primary schools in Adelaide to perform and run workshops with the primary school students.

Our main objective for this tour was to inform the older primary students about the transition from primary to high school. Our secondary objective was to engage the students in music and give them an opportunity to learn a song and perform it in front of their parents and peers.

Overall, the three days we were ‘on tour’ was such an amazing experience and even though we played the same songs over again, we would all definitely take this opportunity again in a heartbeat.

We visited five different schools across the metropolitan Adelaide area, each with their own challenges and rewards. In our workshops, we taught the students a song called ‘Pizza Day’

by The Lucky Chops, which was difficult at the schools with an extremely odd variety of instruments such as ukulele, xylophone, violin and French horn – we didn’t know how to play these instruments! Regardless, we still managed to produce some amazing performances that the students loved playing and listening to after school and at recess time for everyone to hear.

SINGERS NIGHT On October 15 we, the singers of 2020, held a concert.

During the year, we have been training our voices with the help of our vocal teacher, Lauren Henderson. For us vocalists, Lauren has been our halo. With COVID happening, and no chance of being able to perform on a stage, she gave us an opportunity to showcase our talents to our parents by holding a singers’ night which was dedicated to both the parents who weren’t able to watch us perform, and the Year 12 singers who are leaving this year. All of us worked hard on either one or two songs to perform on the day to our friends and family. Adding to the performance experience, we had Mr Moors on keyboard, Jack Barton on drums and Lily Appelt on bass. I for one know that they were a big help on the day of the performance with their little jokes to help calm me down.

Overall, it was a great night and I’m thankful to all the people who made it possible.

STUDENT PATHWAYS REPORT 2020 VET students in Years 10 – 12 Most VET courses have ended or will end soon and so I hope that the students concerned have submitted all work required to their trainers so as to allow for resulting and subsequent uploading of completed competencies onto Schools Online. This will need to be a priority if this task needs attention.

Current Year 9 – 11 students who have expressed interest in VET for 2021 So far over 70 students in Years 9 – 11 have secured places in their chosen VET courses for 2021. I am pleased with the way they have engaged in the process. Thanks to the families who have supported the students financially to allow them this opportunity. We ask that any families of students doing VET courses in 2021 who have been invoiced to tend to this matter by contacting Finance staff at Adelaide High School.

I am still able to investigate vacancies in these and other courses of interest if your son / daughter is keen to commence vocational training. VET courses are filled on a “first in – first served basis,” so I am happy to investigate alternatives should any courses be at capacity.

We will also have students undertaking SACE courses off-campus next year: Stage 1 Scientific Studies: Aviation (a semester course) and Stage 2 Scientific Studies: Aviation (a full year course), both offered through our EASVA Alliance, are proving to be popular.

Planning for the implementation of the new VET for School Students Policy 2022 We have commenced planning for the implementation of the South Australian State Government’s new VET for School Students policy, designed to deliver better outcomes for students, industry and South Australia by ensuring that VET delivered to school students is high quality, linked to industry and employment, and equally valued alongside university pathways. We will continue planning for full implementation over the next 12 – 15 months, ready for the 2022 academic year. You can access the policy here: https://www. education.sa.gov.au/sites/default/files/vet-for-school-students.pdf The policy seeks to reform vocational education, industry engagement and career education in schools, so that young people will be better prepared for their future careers. The policy focuses on three key pillars of reform, each including a number of initiatives: 1. Clearly articulated pathways 2. Enhanced career education 3. Improved student outcomes.

Ms Keeley Gray, one of the VET Advisors appointed to oversee this implementation, has already commenced working with me and other key Adelaide High School staff, Ms Bryant and Mr Hatcliffe, to ensure our readiness for full implementation in 2022. It will be a very exciting opportunity to engage more directly with industry and broaden student outcomes. These include promoting pathways from school to future employment options in Flexible Industry Pathways.

One of the initiatives by Department for Education includes partnering with Year13 to deliver digital state-wide career events that will be available for all SA schools until the end of next year.

On September 24, Year13 hosted a one-day industry-specific digital event which focussed on Construction, Trades and Architecture. I will disseminate details about more online industry-specific events as they are advertised.
