returned as our Old Scholar Keynote speaker. I have included his reflection below. I had the enormous privilege of returning to my old school, Adelaide High School, some 50 years after leaving, to speak at their leadership assembly. Welcome to the 2020 school year. A special welcome to the families of Year 8 students. We have had a very positive start to the year and I thank you again for your partnership and support. The term has been extremely busy and filled with a range of diverse experiences, both within the classroom and through co-curricular programs and clubs. Our first newsletter for 2020 highlights many of these experiences and showcases the outcomes our students achieve. I acknowledge our staff returning to Adelaide High in ongoing positions and in contract positions. We have a number of new staff members joining us this year and it is with pleasure that I introduce them to you: • Chelsea Sawley - Bilingual School Support Officer • Andrea Facheris – Literacy Intervention Officer • Pamella Mesquita – Learning Intervention teacher • Isaac Aitken – English teacher • Sam Beales – Outdoor Education teacher • Nick Joy – HPE teacher • Jayce Golding – English teacher • Annie Matsouliadis – English teacher • Jasmine Christie-Rosser – Drama and English teacher • Kathleen Meyers – Accounting teacher • Edward Bonner – Science teacher • Melissa Phillips – Teacher of the Deaf • David Tamlyn – Science teacher • Maddi O’Brien-Dent – Art and RP teacher (rejoins us after 2 years leave) One of the many highlights of the last few weeks was our annual Leadership Assembly. It was an opportunity to watch our students shine and embrace both formal and informal leadership opportunities at Adelaide High. Des Penny, Co-CEO Proteus Leadership,

Several hundred student leaders, teachers, assistant principals, parents and the graduating class of 2019 were in attendance, along with local politician, Peter Malinauskas MP and the senior leaders of the school led by Principal, Cezanne Green. Two things really stood out to me during my visit: 1. How incredibly positive and proactive the school was in celebrating who they were and their commitment to creating a great learning culture. 2. How hungry the students were for leadership, seeking insight into how they could be better leaders. The motto of the school is not only for school but for life and I truly sensed that this was exactly what was being communicated by the staff and adopted by the students. During the presentation I spoke about my underwhelming academic record and some of the humorous things that I could still remember after 50 years, albeit at times the students looked at me as if I was an alien. “What do you mean there were no computers and mobile phones?” It really makes you appreciate what has changed in that short period of time. During my presentation to the students I spoke about what I believe are the keys to becoming a successful leader, both at school and in life, and they are: • Insight – Learning to respond rather than react • Integrity – Being honest and transparent • Privilege – Never forgetting the privilege of leadership • Ask WHY? – Foster a spirit of discovery • Be Brave – Sometimes we win & sometimes we learn • Don’t wait for opportunities – Look for them & grab them
