Welcome to the last newsletter for 2017. The year has been packed with many events and celebrations which show no signs of abating in these remaining weeks of Term 4. We farewelled the senior class of 2017 early in the term and now the Year 10s and 11s have successfully sat their end of year exams and are undertaking transition for their study next year. No sooner were the exams completed than we welcomed the new 2018 Year 8 students and their families to Adelaide High to begin their transition from Year 7. This event occurred on Monday, December 4. Our Peer Leaders, Year 10 students who have been trained to help Year 8 students throughout 2018, led the afternoon sessions on Transition Day. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our 2018 Peer Leaders, Prefects, International Ambassadors, Senior and Middle School House Leaders, Interact Executive and SRC representatives. Their leadership, feedback and voice helps shape Adelaide High School and creates the conditions for ongoing improvement. Thank you to our staff Ms Jess Salem, Ms Julie Ralph, Mr Phil Wilson, Mr Michael Gurr, Mr Mark Woolfall, Mr Michael Black and Ms Nicole Bryant who support these valuable leadership opportunities.

Adelaide High is continuing to finalise its staffing for 2018 and I will update you into the new school year as more information in this area becomes available. I can at this stage announce staff who have won permanent teaching positions at Adelaide High School in 2018: • • • •

We are very fortunate to have these teachers as permanent members of the Adelaide High School staff.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Suzanne Zhao who has been appointed to a teaching position at Loreto College for 2018 and beyond. Suzanne will be greatly missed by staff and students alike and we thank her for all she has contributed to Adelaide during her time with us.

Ms Electra Montiadis and Mr Jim Dounas have supported a group of our students to lead a sustainability plan for AHS (with an education plan). We have just received a $250,000.00 grant to support this work and enable the transition to LED lights, explore apps and solar panels. This is a wonderful example of our students’ innovation.

I would like to wish our Volleyball students and Mr Graham Cox, Ms Sue Shillabeer, Ms Hannah Wallace Yarrow, Ms Jess James, Ms Livia Vernari and Mr Alex Garlick all the very best for the national Schools Volleyball Cup which is in Melbourne this week. Best wishes also to our 5 Highs Cricket team, led by Mr Phil Hopton and Mr Jeremy Appleton, who are competing in Sydney this week.

Congratulations to our Chess students who participated in the Nationals over the weekend under the leadership and support of Dr Liz Horrocks.

Finally, our students left for Vietnam / Cambodia in Week 7 to engage in the World Challenge with Ms Dimitra Rozlakis and Mr David Place. I wish all of our students all the very best.

ACHPER PE WEEK AWARD Congratulations to groundsman Heath Harrison who received a PE Week Award for Excellence in Health and Physical Education from ACHPER SA for his services to sport at Adelaide High School.

Heath’s nomination was based on the contribution he has made to the school and HPE staff; he supports the running of the comprehensive physical education and sports programs, prepares facilities and oversees associated equipment maintenance.

CONGRATULATIONS TO GEORGE HASSOUROS Mr George Hassouros, coach of the First 18 football team, was recently recognised by the SANFL for his outstanding contribution to football and the development of young players.

He was presented with the school volunteer trophy at the recent SANFL Awards dinner.

The SANFL acknowledged George for his continued commitment to coaching and organisation of the football program at Adelaide High School and the impact he has had on the development of our players. George was nominated by the organisers of the school’s football competition and the umpires coach.

As a school we are very proud of the work that George does each year in coaching and organising all the male football teams at school. We thank him and his family for making a difference and building a strong culture of growth.

3 MESSENGER BOWL CRICKET FINAL Adelaide High played Rostrevor College in the First XI T20 ‘Messenger Bowl’ Final on Thursday, November 30 at Adelaide High. After winning the toss, we got off to a slow start and never really recovered, with Paul Wasiewicz top scoring with 32, to get us to 95 all out. This meant the game was definitely in the balance, with a good performance needed in our bowling and fielding. Liam Bernhardt and James du Preez led the charge, helping Rostrevor fall to 4/17 after 6 overs. The game’s momentum swung again, with some calm batting from Sam Rahaley, seeing the game fall to Rostrevor needing 5 off the last over, with du Preez bowling. First ball - dot, second ball - wicket, third ball - single, leaving Rostrevor 4 off 3 with a wicket in hand and with Rahaley on strike. Rahaley hit a high long ball to deep mid on, with Boschma holding on to the catch to see Adelaide High win the Messenger Bowl for the first time since 2014, after losing to St. Michael’s

and St. Peter’s in the previous two finals.

The umpires’ votes for the game went 3 – James du Preez, 2 Sam Rahaley and 1 Paul Wasiewicz.

The win was a wonderful farewell game for Liam Bernhardt and Paul Wasiewicz. Both have been two mainstays of our First XI

and contributed enormously in this game and over their schooling at Adelaide High.

We are looking forward to thanking them for their contributions at our upcoming Presentation Night.

SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES AWARDS On Tuesday, 29 November, a number of Adelaide High School students participated in the award ceremony in the Bonython Hall at the University of Adelaide. A number of our students undertake study of languages through the School of Languages after hours in their own time. They undertake languages courses not available to them during the school day. They are to be commended for

their commitment and dedication.

DEAF COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP On Monday October 23 I attended Government House with Dr Liz Horrocks and a number of members of the Deaf Community to celebrate the achievement of a number of the students from the AHS Centre for Hearing Impaired (CHI). Tanya Cheung, Bryce Balestrin, Cameron Page and Brenton Peters attended the function which included meeting the Governor, touring Government House and gardens and receiving an award.

CanDo4Kids applied for a scholarship for John, William and Simon Maggs, Brenton Peters, Sacha Clark-Hunter, Bryce Balestrin, Tanya Cheung and Cameron Page to attend the Crossing Borders Camp in NSW. Crossing Borders is a youth summer camp for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students involving a variety of activities, meeting new people and team building. The camp is organised by Deaf Children Australia (DCA) and the NSW Deaf Society. Tanya, Cameron and Bryce accepted the scholarship on behalf of themselves and Sacha who will be attending the camp in January next year. Due to commitments with the Deaf Cricket Championships, John, William, Simon and Brenton will not be attending the camp. The Crossing Borders Camp is a fantastic opportunity and will be a positive experience for these students.

GIRLS’ SUPER 8S CRICKET CARNIVAL CHAMPIONS Adelaide High School recently hosted a Super 8s Cricket Carnival in conjunction with School Sport SA and Marg Smith, with 7 schools and 8 teams involved in the carnival for Year 8, 9 and 10 students. Adelaide HS had 2 teams (1 x Year 8 and 1 x Year 9/10) and competed against Portside, Ocean View, Henley, Immanuel, Underdale and LeFevre.

It was a round robin tournament where the girls were exposed to hard ball cricket on turf wickets, with SACA, SA Scorpions and premier cricket clubs present to assist and witness the girls in action. After the round robin, Adelaide were placed 1st and 5th, with the younger team (coached by old scholar Tom Cousins) playing off in the 5th v 6th final and the older team (coached by old scholar Tate Robins) playing off in the Grand Final v Henley HS. Excitingly both teams won their respective finals, with Adelaide 1 being crowned champions after a convincing with against Henley High School. The team consisted of: Rachel Church ©, Georgia Iannella ©, Conni Vlass, Charlotte Peters, Romy Corelli, Stella AhkitBurgoyne, Ivan Jaric, Chloe Filipatos. Well done to all the girls.

Further to the girls performing so well and having a great experience, 12 of our Year 10 cricket students undertook the responsibility of scoring and umpiring on all 4 fields for the entire day. With an umpiring and coaching course already under their belt through the cricket program, Samyak Jain, Darcy Hunkin, Daniel Kriek, Jared Merritt, Suraj Rajesh, Manush Patel, Yash Mistry, Erik Carrington, Riley Williams, Ravneet Tuteja, Liam Kent and Sam Scrimgeour not only officiated the games, but also assisted in coaching the teams through the rules and game sense scenarios.

A special thanks also to Heath Harrison and Nick Patterson for their efforts in set up, ground and pitch preparation; the venues were top shelf.

All in all it was a great day where over 20 girls and 12 boy cricketers were part of a very much up-and-coming sport for girls. The fact we were champions was very much secondary to the experience and exposure to different skill sets and life skills.

UPDATED UNIFORM POLICY During the year the Governing Council has been looking at the wording of the current Uniform Policy and discussing proposed changes brought to it by the staff and students through the Uniform Committee.

As a result of these discussions, the Adelaide High School Uniform Policy has been revised.

A copy of the new policy will be mailed to all families with the School Fees invoices in January, but in the interim it can be downloaded from http://www.adelaidehs.sa.edu.au/Enrolment/ Uniform At the request of students, Adelaide High Schoolbranded sports leggings have been introduced into the PE uniform. The sports leggings are made from quality fabric and, like the tracksuit pants, have ADELAIDE written down the right thigh. They are now available from the Uniform Shop: ¾ length $53 and full length $57.

5 ROWING CLUB REGATTA HOSTING As we approach our mid-season break we celebrate the achievements of the AHS Rowing team who have experienced much success at recent regattas.

On November 25 at the Junior Sprint Regatta on the Torrens, Adelaide High recorded three 3rd places (Junior Boys C, Junior Boys A and Junior Girls A), three 2nd places (Junior Boys A, Junior Boys C and Junior Girls B) and four 1st places (Junior Boys B, Junior Girls B, Junior Girls A and Junior Boys B).

On December 2, the Rowing Club were presented with the unique opportunity to host the Rowing SA “40th Anniversary of Rowing at West Lakes” Regatta. The support from the parent group was outstanding and on behalf of the school we would like to publicly acknowledge all of the parents who gave up their time to take on volunteer roles at the regatta, but we must make special mention of Avril Clutton, Harry Postema and Patti McGrail for the leadership roles they took on. The Adelaide HS Rowing community would also like to thank the following sponsors for their

donations to the Rowing Program: Maxima, 5 Quarter Designs, DML Constructions, JVH Technology, Sekol Farmed Tuna, Grant Coachlines and the Backman, Codd, Ralph and Salibayev families.

Unfortunately, adverse weather conditions resulted in the regatta experiencing heavy modification and finishing early. Despite this, many crews recorded favourable results in very challenging conditions.

Both the Senior Girls and the Senior Boys placed third in their heats which didn’t progress to a final due to the weather. The two Intermediate Boys’ crews placed 1st and 2nd in similar circumstances, and the Intermediate Girls A and B crews placed 1st and 2nd respectively.

Thank you once more to the parents of all of the students involved for showing true adaptability in very unfavourable conditions for regatta hosting! AHS Rowing would also like to take the opportunity to thank the Boat Race Officials who work on a volunteer basis at Rowing SA to ensure that each regatta runs safely and smoothly. Many of the BRO’s have an Adelaide High School

connection and all were favourable in their mention of the attitude and commitment of the AHS parents and students on Saturday.

It is also important to acknowledge the outstanding contribution from the AHS Rowing students over the last 6 months. In total, over 350 hours of volunteer service has been given by our rowers outside of regular school hours, their regular training and required service commitments to support the Rowing Club and its operations.

These students have assisted in coaching the Year 7 Rowing Transition Program, helped at Club working bees and with minor boat maintenance, assisted in coxing other year levels or volunteered at regattas.

With citizenship being one of the school’s Graduate Qualities, it is pleasing that the rowing students are committed to the ideals of giving back to the community.

Presentations to the Boat Race Officials

RUNNING WITH SCISSORS: THE RAVEN On Thursday, November 30, Running with Scissors performed ‘The Raven’ to staff, students and family. This was the company’s first performance under the direction of Michaela Black, who worked with the students during this term. Throughout the term, the company worked with Viewpoints, creating a physical theatre piece using the poem The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe.

The performance was an immersive piece of theatre, where the audience walked through the space which created a constant feeling of uncertainty and mystery.

The students involved were Zoe Wissman, Francine Legaspi, Lauren Ivancic, Sally Dubinina, Ying Stokes, Fei Stokes, Brianna McNeill, Lilli Vitagliano,

Robert Semaan, Max Foti, Daphne Dale, Amelie Owen, Emily Bollen, Maya Carey and Angus Coyle.

Congratulations to all involved. The students presented a particularly mature and engaging piece of work.

PEER LEADER TRAINING In Week 7 of Term 4, 55 students from Year 10 engaged in a twoday training course to develop their leadership skills in order to be successful Peer Leaders in 2018.

The two training days, which occurred at school, were organised by Mrs Salem, Ms LeDolédec, Mr MacLeod, Mr Varricchio and Mr Gurr.

They all taught various aspects of the program in order to prepare the Year 10 students for their work with the Year 8s in 2017.

The various skills and activities included in the course were essential as the students learnt about effective teamwork, confident public

speaking, and the process of teaching the Adelaide High School Anti-Harassment Program.

The students also planned the structure of their lessons, whilst applying the essential skills and knowledge learnt in the two-day course.

The Peer Leaders met the Year 7s on their Transition Day during Week 8 and will be working with them further in the first week back next year.

7 LAUNCH OF A CARBON SEQUESTRATION DEMONSTRATION SITE In conjunction with Trees For Life (SA), Adelaide High School recently co-hosted the launch of a carbon sequestration demonstration site on the school’s boundary near Glover Ave..

The site has been developed in conjunction with Greening Australia, the Department Of Environment, Water And Natural Resources, the City of Adelaide and Trees for Life, and aims to show on a small scale what a carbon offset planting looks like. It has been created to help residents and visitors to gain a better understanding of carbon offsets and the important role plants can play in creating

a carbon neutral city.

Representatives from all of the above organisations attended the launch and a number of Adelaide High School students were also in attendance, with 2017 SRC President Mhyles Hintural speaking about the work of the school’s Ecovision Club and their role in planting more than 2000 trees on the school grounds in the last eight years.

YEAR 9 HISTORY GUEST SPEAKER In Year 9 History our class was fortunate enough to welcome Mr Coomer, a member of the Stolen Generation to come in and talk about his experience growing up in the Roelands Native Mission Farm in Western Australia during the 1960s and 70s.

they were only doing a job they had to do. This was very surprising because, in my opinion, Mr. Coomer has every right to hate the people who did what they did to him.

This talk was one to remember. It opened my eyes to one of the worst (legal) mass kidnappings of all time. This was the story of Mr Coomer, an amazingly persistent and courageous person. Tricked at a young age of 6 into leaving his family for a convincingly ‘fun’ train ride, ultimately led to him being put into a mission to grow up with strict rules and no family love. I found it deeply surprising and shocking to find out just how isolated the children were made to feel as they were sent to a community far away from their homes, with no contact with their old friends and family. These kids were forced to spend long precious hours of childhood doing hard labour in the fields, orchids, kitchens and laundry rooms, with little time to focus on studies.

I learnt that I cannot take whatever I have for granted and to be happy that I have a family and that we are all together. I respect Mr Coomer so much for having the braveness to sit in front of us and share his experience in the missionary camps, and I can’t imagine how hard it would have been to relive those memories. I really enjoyed having him here and hopefully he can come again soon.

It was interesting to hear the story of the Stolen Generation from someone who lived it first-hand. It was very sad when he described being taken from his mother but it was inspiring to see he could make light jokes about the horror of the whole situation. When asked if he held any resentment towards the government appointed officers who stole him, he said no. He explained that now that he has grown up and had time to reflect on it, he says he realises

Level 1 Coaching

CRICKET NEWS

Our Year 9 Cricket Class has been engaged in the accreditation pathway through CricketSA and our cricket program, recently completing their Level 1 coaching accreditation. This course comprises theory and practical components which give students the skills, knowledge and understanding to help teach others about the game that they love and enjoy. It also gives them another way to stay involved through sport, other than playing, giving them access to some lifelong, transferrable skills. These students added further to their accreditation with the successful completion of their Apply First Aid Course on Tuesday, November 28.

Level 1 Umpiring On Friday, December 1, our Year 10 students participated in a Level 1 Umpiring Course, giving them another way to stay involved in cricket, but also gain an appreciation for one of the essential elements of cricket and sport. Without an umpire, there is simply no game! The session was thoroughly enjoyable and a class favourite, with CricketSA’s ongoing professional relationship with our school coming to the fore. CricketSA coaching and umpiring staff were impressed with our students’ knowledge, eagerness to learn, insight and questioning.

State Representatives Rachel Church (Year 10) is currently away captaining the State U18 Female Cricket team in Canberra, with Georgia Iannella (Year 10) also part of the team. They are away for two weeks and this will be an invaluable experience for both of them. Good luck also to Euan Fletcher (Year 11) who will be away with the State U19 Male Cricket team in Hobart playing in the U19 National Championships.

Five Highs – Sydney 2017

On December 3, our First XI travelled to Sydney to play in the annual Five Highs Cricket Carnival being hosted by Sydney Boys High School. We took eight Five Highs debutants, with all of them thoroughly deserving of their opportunity. This is our pinnacle event as a cricket program and we are excited to give these students a memorable sporting experience through school. The team consists of: Suraj Rajesh, Riki Boschma, Tyson Miller, Erik Carrington (wk), Manush Patel, Liam Toovey, Sam Scrimgeour, James du Preez (c), Mason Neagle, Samyak Jain, Liam Kent, Lachy Hodder-Trenwith, Ben Kelly.

9 CHINESE LANGUAGE AWARDS CEREMONY On December 1, Violet Spanner from Year 10, received a prize and certificate in the secondary student category. This award is given to students who are studying Chinese as a second language, and are demonstrating enthusiasm for Chinese studies, including knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture.

The ceremony was held at Bonython Hall Adelaide University with many participants from many schools in South Australia.

STUDENT PATHWAYS UPDATE VET – What is available for 2018 for Years 10 – 12 students?

At the time of printing, there were still vacancies in these popular courses: • semester long courses (held after school) 3D Games Design and Digital Effects and Digital Photography and Lighting.

• full year courses (held one day per week and offering Stage 1 SACE credits): Certificate II Retail Cosmetics, Certificate II Salon Assistant and Certificate II Engineering.

• full year Certificate III courses (offering Stage 2 SACE credits and contributing to ATAR generation): Certificate III Business, Certificate III Fitness, Certificate III Hospitality, Certificate III Make Up and Certificate III Screen and Media.

• They may still be vacancies in other courses (in the Eastern Adelaide Schools Cluster, at various Trade Training Centres and at private RTOs (Registered Training Organisations).

VET – What’s new?

Certificate III Music Industry (Electronic Music Production) is an intensive six month part time course (run two nights per week for three hours each night) commencing in May 2018 and delivered at SAE Creative Media Institute, which is located in Gouger Street in the city. Visit https://sae.edu.au/ for more information. This course is ideal for senior students who want to become producers and learn the skills to create beats and master their sound. It teaches the essentials of audio engineering and electronic music production.

Students will be able to learn how to write and produce their own professional quality compositions.

Note these two promotional events: • Info Night on Wednesday December 6, 2017, between 6 – 8pm.

Students will be able to speak to the experienced team at the SAE Creative Media Institute, tour the facilities and find out the options available. Register at sae.edu.au/events.

• Summer Series from 23 – 25 January, 2018, between 10am – 4pm. This three-day program allows students (who are over 15 years) to work on exciting creative projects in Studio Production or Electronic Music Production. The early bird special of $100 per person expires on December 10, 2017. Lunch is included each day. From December 11, the price increases to $125 for the program. Register at sae.edu.au/events.

Wrapping up 2017 VET It has been another successful year on the VET front. We are working very hard to ensure that: • VET results are entered onto Schools Online for the SACE Board of SA

• Years 10 – 12 students receive their parchments / certificates as soon as they are available • Years 9 – 11 students are enrolled in their chosen purchased 2018 VET course.

A reminder that places are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, so ask your son / daughter to make a time see me very soon if they would like VET information and if they would like me to investigate course availability, cost, etc and inform them of the number and level of SACE credits. Note that enrolments in short courses will occur next year as soon as more details are released.

In the vast majority of cases, once VET enrolments are finalised, an Adelaide High School invoice and a Commitment to Pay letter will be generated for families to action. I have also added a document which outlines the responsibilities of all parties involved in the purchased VET partnership: the school, the student/parent/carer, the RTO and, if applicable, the work placement provider, so that all parties have a better understanding of what to expect and how they can assist the student to maximise their learning outcomes and receive their desired nationally recognised qualification.

VET course payments received at school will be transferred to the site delivering the training. Timetable adjustments can be made by eligible students at the start of 2018, once timetables are released and upon completion of a Subject Change Request Form (which necessitates discussion with an approval by both their House Manager and their parent/carer).

At this stage I would like to thank the school’s Leadership Team, House Managers and support staff who have provided wonderful assistance during the year. Thanks also for your ongoing support.

Thanks also to Ms Nikiforos, whose dedication to the delivery of Food Processing VET, in collaboration with tafeSA, is marvellous. Her students have developed wonderful, industry standard skills, with some wishing to explore pathways into the industry in the future.

I congratulate all students who have completed vocational training this year, whether integrated or purchased. I am very proud of your achievements! I take this opportunity to wish you all a relaxing summer holiday period and look forward to working with you in 2018.
