MICHAEL CINALLI WORK SAMPLE 2021

APARTMENT 24 LOCATION: QUEENS, NEW YORK DATE: FALL 2018 PROFESSOR: DAVID DUGAS PROJECT LENGTH: 7 WEEKS

The project was designed for ASCA 2018-2019 Timber in the city competition. The project is designed as an apartment building in Queens, New York. For the competition the project bust be designed with wood as the main structural element. The design uses Glue laminated timber to create a grid and cross laminated timber as the floor and wall elements.

The apartment building must have apartment of various sizes. The design allows for almost all apartments to have a balcony on the outside. The light core on the interior is an open air space that allows for fresh air and light to enter into the building therefor creating a street on the interior of the building.

TERMINAL 10 LOCATION: BLACKSBURG, VA DATE: SPRING 2019 PROFESSOR: HEINRICH SCHNOEDT PROJECT LENGTH: 9 WEEKS

TERMINAL 10 This project was submitted into the 2019 ASCA Steel competition. This competition is intended for students design a futuristic multi-modal transportation center. The competition submission consists of these four boards.

Terminal 10 is a multi-modal transportation hub for buses, taxi drones, self driving cars, electric bicycles, and walking pedestrians.

The program also includes multiple food courts, classrooms, offices, and a lecture hall. Terminal 10 is designed to create an interior piazza for the occupants to program by themselves. This is achieved by dedicating a separate structure to the roof from the programmed volumes that enclose the space in a diverse manner.

An installation that embodies the playfulness and excitement of St. Kilda, while simultaneously generating energy for the residents and occupants of the city. Wind energy is converted into electricity through the use of unspooling kites.

The intention of the design is to evoke the emotion of playfulness and contemplation. The site is to be a beautiful landmark to be seen from near and far. The instllation is designed to engage the occupants and viewer both night and day.

This project was submitted into the Land Arts Generator Initiative 2018 competition. This competition is intended for students to create an art instillation that generates power on a given site. The competition submission consists of these 3 boards. The project was selected to be shortlisted and was published on the Land Arts Generator Initiatives website and their 2018 book.

AQUAPARTMENT SYSTEM LOCATION: KENSINGTON, PHILADELPHIA,PA DATE: SPRING 2017 PROFESSOR: ERIC OSKEY PROJECT LENGTH: 10 WEEKS

FRONT ELEVATION

ELEVATIONS Aquapartment system is designed as a mixed use building that doubles as an apartment complex and a smaller vertical farming center. There are 3 three units for small family’s of 2 or 3 that sit behind an extended double skin facade that holds an aquaponic system on the southern side of the building while also serving as a lounge and circulation space for the residence. This grows fish and vegetables for the residents and surrounding ecovillage. The occupants keep up with the vertical farming units and feed the fish. The apartments passively heated and cooled engaging the double skin facade effect.

Thesis Statement: With the changing of the world and lifestyles, new typologies and oportunities in housing emerge. Using new spacial configeration and introducring food production generates a new building typology.

This thesis is designed to be a building of a new typology in an urban environment and introduce new ideas as to what a home in a city is, in a rapidly changing and advancing society.
