he catwalk has spoken and the hair trends for 2014 are making their impression. And with Valentine’s Day plans on everyone’s lips, Aesthetics has all the romantic hairstyles you need to know about.

If your look is pretty low maintenance, try a loose up-do, with natural waves, pinned up and curly tendrils framing the face. This is unmistakeable glamour without the hassle and works for a weekend outing or a fancy date.

The relaxed updo works best on second day hair too and it’s weather-proof as wispy flyaways only add to this modern look. Aim for something in-between just woken up, laidback locks and ethereal goddess of love.

Plaits are the trend that keeps on coming and we’re not complaining. At the S/S’14 Alberta Ferretti show, textured braids were teased and loose around the face with a fishtail plait pulled out of shape to create volume and intrigue. Try a pretty up-do by combining mini-braids with twists and knots at the back for a bridal look with a modern twist.

Bobs are definitely becoming a big thing, whether it’s short blunt crops or longer, easy-going face-framers.

But to create your own faux-bob, take inspiration from Nicole Scherzinger who styled this glamorous ‘do on last season’s X Factor. You can underpin your hair to create a new length without going for the chop. The faux bob is great because it doubles volume and lift.

The 70s brought us lots of big hair and making waves this season is the larger-than- life super hair à la Amy Adams in American Hustle (2014). Twist and pin damp hair then allow to dry before shaking loose. Add volume with a volumising dust.

Enter spring with all its pretty pastel sheerness. Colours are taking on floral notes for spring with muted pink, peachy blonde and lilac undertones for brunettes.

Clean bright yellow tones, shimmery pale blondes with rose gold. Try golden auburns, strawberry blondes and Titian reds. Take a look at Sienna Miller’s multi-tonal slices and highlights for inspiration. This soft spring look pays homage to vintage florals and would make a cool, demure statement on your big day.

t’s no mystery as to why more and more Britons are going online to find dates. With career demands being so time consuming, it has become harder to meet potential matches. But online dating has its downsides too. There’s no way we can completely trust everything online; there’s miscommunication, ambiguity and in the worst of cases, users who mislead and manipulate. So, what’s a single person to do?

Berkeley International is not another faceless online dating service. Instead, it’s a boutique dating service that takes its clients through a tailored matching process from getting to know you and your history to giving you dating tips and guiding you through your dates. It’s not a fast-track to falling in love. Instead, Berkeley prides itself on making smart matches between like-minded people who want to get to know someone properly.

We caught up with Emma Budgens, Berkeley’s Client Director for the Midlands, North England and Scotland to get her insight into what makes her matches a success.

What sets Berkeley International apart from online dating sites and other dating agencies?

The most important difference is that Berkeley International is a personal ‘Introductions agency’. Online Dating, as the name suggests, has no personal assistance or vetting and selection process. Our clients are not ‘just looking for dates’, ultimately they would like to meet their soul mate, their significant other.

When you meet a client for the first time, how do you find out what they’re looking for?

Firstly I want to get to know them, which helps me understand a good match. This is initially, a case of allowing them to talk about themselves, openly and comfortably. I want to learn everything from their childhood and educational experience to their future life plan as this will map out who will fit best for them.

It is important for members to understand that they will evolve through our membership and our service will evolve with them. My job is to get a starting point, but it takes more than a couple of hours to really get to know someone.

What’s a common scenario for your clients – are the newly divorced and wanting to get back out there? Or are they young professionals who want something more serious and don’t know how to find it?

Our age range spans from mid to late 20s to early 60s so we cover most ‘single scenarios’. The common scenario for our clients is that they find themselves generally in a comfortable position in life and they want to share it with someone.

Why do you think it is so difficult to date in the modern world? Are we all just too picky?

The difficulty I see, tends to be more circumstance, particularly where our members are in a comfortable financial position, successful and cautious; it is the risk of

Emma Budgens letting someone personally into their lives; it’s trusting the people and the environment in which they are meeting. So having an agency engaged as a middle man, helps manage that.

We are not necessarily too picky, but we are generally over-informed. Most people in successful relationships today will agree that their chosen partner does not have all their ideal criteria, or all the boxes ticked on their checklist!

What’s the best dating advice you’ve ever given?

Quite often we can all be so wrapped up in ourselves we can forget how we appear to other people. In any situation when humans interact – behaviour breeds behaviour. Your actions and energy will affect the people around you and ultimately reflect back on you.

When it doesn’t work out, do your clients find the rejection difficult or is it usual a mutual thing?

I don’t think anyone likes rejection! It varies, however the ‘no chemistry’ feedback is generally a mutual thing.

We are not here to crush peoples confidences, if there is constructive feedback we can share with a client, that we feel will ultimately improve their experience / dating skills, then we will.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Always, the most rewarding part of my job is a successful match – every degree of it, from two people enjoying their first introduction, getting the phone call to know that two clients are exclusively dating and especially the notification of the wedding date!

atients who wear traditional removable full dentures will tell you that they are often reluctant to smile and laugh, and experience many social and physical limitations. The long-term detrimental effects of complete tooth loss are well documented and include facial changes due to the loss of jawbone, accelerated signs of ageing and loss of self-esteem.

The World Health Organisation classifies the loss of all natural teeth as a ‘physical impairment’.

Will dental implants solve the problem?

Complete denture wearers often find their dentures troublesome and a poor comparison to healthy natural

teeth. Even as little as two dental implants in the lower jaw of a complete denture wearer are proven to significantly help overcome the social and physical limitations they experience.

What would you advise someone who is about to face the loss of their teeth?

There is a wide range of proven dental implant solutions.

I would strongly advise that they at least explore the option of implant-assisted dentures or a non-removable fixed bridge of teeth and consider the benefits verses traditional removable dentures.

Option 1: Removable implant assisted complete denture A removable complete denture that is assisted by components located at the head of two or more implants. This solution can be used in either the upper or lower jaw. The tissues of the mouth also provide some support to the denture.

Option 2: Fixed/removable implant and bar-assisted complete denture An alternative to the implant assisted complete denture. By comparison this denture is rigidly anchored by a minimum of four implants in either the upper or lower jaws combined with a precision milled bar of titanium.

Option 3: Fixed bridge of teeth This full arch of teeth is made up of four to six implants placed in either jaw. A titanium framework with an acrylic gum veneer and teeth is then permanently attached.

It’s been around for thousands of years and is rich in antioxidants, amino acids and L-theanine, which is known for reducing stress and anxiety whilst improving the mood. Green tea has to be consumed on a regular basis to give an overall feeling of well-being.

Turkey: Just like a banana it contains high levels of tryptophan which increase the serotonin levels. In addition to this it’s also very rich in tyrosine, an amino acid that helps the body cope with stress.

Dark Chocolate: It has been proven that dark chocolate will improve cognitive function, prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The darker the chocolate the better and it also releases endorphins in the brain which creates that feel good factor.

Berries: These little gems are very efficient against depression and are full of antioxidants that support the brain’s cognitive function. They also promote positive energy and stimulate the production of the feel good enzymes.

Sardines: Numerous studies have shown that people deficient in omega 3 and omega 6 are far more susceptible to anxiety and depression than in those who have normal levels of fatty acids in the body. They need to be consumed regularly, 2 to 3 times a week.

Eggs: The egg yolk especially has a high level of vitamin D and this can improve mood disorders because it stimulates the production of serotonin in the brain. Try to consume 2 to 3 a week.

Avocados: These also contain good fats which raise the levels of dopamine and increase endorphins. No matter what, these will lift your winter blues.

Dark Leafy Vegetables: They have high levels of magnesium and when we get low on it the serotonin levels are reduced; so up the spinach and romaine lettuce.

Walnuts: Last but not least, walnuts contain the most essential fats and these will elevate your mood. A handful a day will suffice.

find that many ladies have tried cheap corsets before and been uncomfortable which has put them off. But not all corsets are created equal...’

The Vernon Hotel and Restaurant is under new management Lucinda Bunn

W

ith new management comes great expectation. But rising to the challenge is award-winning Head Chef Richard Attkins.

With 17 years experience in some of the most high profile kitchens in the country, Richard is turning The Vernon on its head, with an exciting modern British menu aiming to make it a destination gastropub for locals and foodies from afar.

The Vernon’s handsome decor remains, with the wooden beams, long bar and open fireplace just some of its fine features. The real changes are in the kitchen. Anyone with a taste for fanciful flavour combinations and thrilling table theatrics will enjoy the new offerings. It’s going to be exciting to see these beautiful plates in an unexpectedly modest hotel in the

countryside. Take, for example, Richard’s twice baked ‘Hereford Hop’ soufflé with hay smoked cauliflower.

The cauliflower is smoked and whizzed into a frozen purée before it’s hidden in the soufflé creating a layered texture and a smoky surprise. And the best bit, Richard explains, ‘the soufflé is served on a bed of dry ice and hay, then at the table, diners will pour over the essence of cheddar so each element really wraps around the senses’.

There’s a tian of hand-picked white crab, avocado mousse, mint and cucumber crème fraîche and avocado ice cream.There’s ballotine of local braised leg of lamb, with sugar cured cannon, ‘champit’ potato, butter poached leeks. There’s Hanbury pheasant breast stuffed with spiced haggis, confit leg ‘clapshot’ potato,

EdgeMagazine kale and blood orange jus. But Richardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creativity has stretched far enough to create desserts like dark chocolate fondant with malted milk ice cream, dark chocolate jelly and milk foam and a vanilla and root ginger cheesecake with satsuma ice cream.

Here we have a chance to eat what so many kitchens are aiming for. This is a gourmet kitchen, where everything goes into the food; from freshly bread baked twice a day to homemade chocolates with tobacco. At The Vernon, fine food rules. aving started out as a 3 week ‘pop up’ bar for Christmas, Norjske, a Scandinavian inspired bar in the exclusive Edgbaston area of Birmingham has reopened for good and looks set to bring Scandi-style to the Birmingham bar scene.

The panoramic bar sits above the Edgbaston Deli on Highfield Road, opposite the Michelin-starred Simpsons Restaurant and marks the start of a transformation in the area from offices to a more entertainment led environment.

Bathed in ice blue light, the glass fascia of the 1960’s building allows amazing views over St George’s Church and beyond. It’s this relationship between the outside, coupled with the clean crisp minimalist lines inside that helps bring the sense of Scandinavia to the venue.

Boasting an impressive cocktail menu that will help beat the winter blues, Norsjke will be the only establishment outside of London that serves the ancient Scandinavian spirit, Aquavit. alentine’s brings for me the hint of spring. It feels like the start of a more optimistic time of the year and with that an excuse to drink some uplifting wines. Drinking on Valentine’s often brings memories of chocolate martinis, raspberry Bellinis, cosmopolitans, all using traditional aphrodisiac-based ingredients, like chocolate, strawberries and raspberries. But to shake things up a bit with cocktails, why not use Chambord to make your cosmopolitan to give a richer more intense flavour?

Try a Bellini with a difference, add crème de cassis, crème du mure and crème de framboise to cranberry juice, ice and top with sparkling wine or prosecco for a really fresh berry-based drink. At the restaurant, it is all about pink this year. Our favourite rosé is the appropriately named "whispering angel" from the Chateau d'Esclans estate in Provence, France. Made from a majority of grenache, this superb rosé is light in colour but doesn't pale on intensity. It offers a beautiful selection of vibrant redcurrant and raspberry fruit, balanced excellently with a subtle acidity and well balanced alcohol content. It goes surprisingly well with fish and is often matched with our Whiting or Loch Duart salmon dishes.

For a touch of decadence, we will be recommending the Chapel Down Rosé Brut from Tenterden in Kent as a great aperitif drink. A sparkling wine from England made from Pinot Noir shows off the really approachable style of English sparkling wine that is soft, fruity, and not too dry, so it’s perfect to start off that unforgettable romantic evening. Marks and Spencer’s list some of Chapel Down's sparkling wines and although not this one, there is a great selection to treat yourself at home.

Personally, I will be drinking Camel Valley Pinot Noir Rosé Brut, 2009 from Cornwall this Valentine’s. Again, made from 100% Pinot Noir, this is a more serious style of sparkling wine and this shows in the medals this wine has won internationally in the last 5 years including "Sparkling Rosé international trophy" in Verona for 2008 and 2009 and Decanter Gold Awards. This has now replaced my once consistent supply of Laurent Perrier Rosé and if you want to add a bit of pink sparkle to your Valentine’s celebrations, this is a bottle to impress.

ailcote Hall is often acclaimed as Britain’s most romantic hotel, an English stately home built in 1640, set in 15 acres of Warwickshire countryside.

Well, it certainly looks the part. Nailcote is, after all, a picturesque getaway with plenty of facilities to keep you entertained.

Rick Cressman purchased the hotel back in 1991 and sympathetically added a new leisure centre, building it mainly underground. The Par 3 golf course is hugely popular, beautifully designed to test even the most experienced of golfers but equally popular with beginners.

First time visitors will be delighted by the relaxed, easy-going and friendly mood.

Service is impeccable in the sense that it is faultlessly gracious, nothing is too much trouble. Even the imposing Oak Room restaurant with its enormous log fire has a ‘put your feet up’ premise.

In the twilight hours of a long day you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks sitting in the cosy lounge as we did to peruse the menu. The seasonally changing menu is full of delicious local produce. There is the ‘Menu of the month’ offered at a favourable price or the full à la carte menu. Each selection offers lovely choices and it is possible to choose from both. The wine list is luscious; you’ll find everything from Chilean surprises to French Premier Grand Crus. It’s clear that Nailcote has a well stocked cellar.

Our first course was an amuse-bouche of delicious foamy cauliflower soup with hints of apple. It was very tasty with the comfort of cauliflower and the sweet and sharp hints of apple. Michael ordered the hand dived scallops which means they are clean and ethical, no dredging. They were served with cèpes, butternut squash and crispy ham. I ordered the sautéed king prawns which were served with a fresh chilli and lime sauce with ciabatta crostini. This was a dish to impress, fantastic flavours and executed to perfection.

Nothing says theatre at the table more than flambé. Michael’s main course of steak Diane was impressively flambéed by our server Jack at our table served with a rich, creamy brandy sauce. It was a wonderful treat. Equally impressive was my whole grilled Dover Sole, adeptly deboned at the table by head waiter, Terry. A firm favourite and an all time classic, the flavour of the fish speaks for itself but the secret was a lovely buttery sauce finished with fresh crayfish.

The dessert menu listed a few French classics: crêpe Suzette, raspberry soufflé, crème brûlée. Whilst tempted, I opted for the fresh fruit salad served with a refreshing cranberry and orange sorbet. Michael devoured a classic crème caramel served with spiced forest fruits.

Nailcote is in a gorgeous location, with splendid views of the green Warwickshire landscape, a sophisticated but relaxed atmosphere. With 40 rooms this luxury hotel is grand, the food is fantastic, the rooms are traditionally stylish but with the warm welcome and attentive staff, it feels like a cosy, intimate sanctuary for a romantic retreat.

ROYAL APPROVAL The Prince of Wales Moseley

T

he Prince of Wales in Moseley, or “The Prince”, as its regulars know it, is something of an icon in Birmingham and the wider region, with people travelling from all around to visit this tardis-like suburban pub. When you step inside, the warm fires, traditional bar and of course the giant moose head (Maddox for those who know) do not let on the wondrous offerings that this pub has waiting in store.

As you walk through the front bar, with its range of beers and ales, including their own brew known as Sad Bastard, there is a recently refurbished snug and a cocktail lounge, perfect for groups and parties. The real eye-opener at The Prince however comes as soon as you walk towards the back garden where a 200 seat, covered beer garden, complete with Tiki Bar and beach has become a must visit for those across the region, even when the sun isn’t shining.

This heated garden is home to “La Choza”, a cigar shop for those who wish to indulge in their favourite smoke and the newly recovered “Bothy Bar” which shows the latest sports action and even movies during the week.

The Prince has even managed to squeeze in a cheese and wine shop into the back garden, known as “Shed du Vin”, which offers cheeseboards and wine pairings. It’s these quirky ideas, friendly atmosphere and great service that have put The Prince on the map.

The Prince’s “Month of Malt”, is another of the team’s great ideas to give their customers something a little different. Throughout February, The Prince will be showcasing their range of 50 single malt whiskies, offering tasting sessions with a different single malt every day for just £1 a dram.

Keith Marsden, who alongside his wife Diane, has been the man behind the transformation of The Prince over the last 5 years commented, “There are plenty of choices for a great night out, but if you want something that’s a little bit different, why not give the Prince a try?

THE CROWN AT MARTLEY Bringing back the pub classics

he Crown at Martley has seen a bit of a turnaround in the last few months. In fact, the new team behind the bar are bringing back the traditional food and classic pub nights for their local customers. The real ale pub is set in the pretty village of Martley, just a few miles north of Worcester and the modern country interior is now warm and thriving with diners and drinkers socialising and enjoying the live music every Saturday night.

The changes to the menu are particularly popular, with British pub classics being the order of the day, with Martley sausages and mash, beer battered fish and chips, and steak and ale pie. This February, there’s the Tuesday Quiz Night, Poker Night on Thursdays and Steak Nights on Friday. Enjoy two sirloin steaks and a bottle of wine for £25.00. With some fantastic live bands on the Saturday night line-up for the next month, you can always do dinner and make a night of it in Martley. For lunch we went for soup and a starter. With an extensive menu, The Crown has lots of different dishes to tempt you. The Mediterranean platter and the mushroom bruschetta were top of our list. Each option was simple, tasty and excellent value for money. The great thing about The Crown is that there’s so much on offer; from the comprehensive menu, a snug real ale bar and a games bar featuring a pool table, darts board and sports TV. There are enough rooms to please those looking for coffee and cake in the afternoon, those popping in for a pint after work and families eating out at the weekend.

lim, elegant stems bear pendent green blooms with a pink blush, above leathery evergreen foliage.

Hellebore ‘Winter Bells’ is a delightful addition to the front of borders, woodland gardens or patio containers where it’s incredibly long flowering period adds interest for many months.

If you’re looking for a beautiful flower that blooms from winter into spring, look no further than the hellebore. Usually cream or pink in colour, and tinged with green, hellebores grow up to 38 cm high. They’re absolutely perfect for this time of year and as an evergreen perennial flowering plant they’re decorative, frost-resistant and hardy. In fact, they grow happily in a wide range of conditions; just keep them away from very dry or waterlogged beds.

OPEN YOUR MIND Lucy Hawking launches Selfridges Festival of Imagination

L

ucy Hawking, journalist, novelist and daughter of world-famous scientist Stephen Hawking, speaks about kicking off Selfridges Festival of Imagination in Birmingham on Wednesday 5th February.

“Abstract concepts are very difficult for 99.9% of the world's population to grasp. On second thoughts, maybe it's about 99.8%.”

It’s hard not to smile when you chat to Lucy Hawking, novelist and daughter of renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. Incredibly smart herself she combines an infectious energy with a wonderfully personable charm and a staggering ability to explain the unexplainable in a way a nine-year-old could understand.

As an author of children’s books, she’s made a living from it.

“I include myself in that 99.8%, of course!” she says, with a chuckle. We suspect she’s not.

On 5th February, Lucy comes to Birmingham as part of Selfridges Festival Of Imagination – a three-week programme of events which will encourage shoppers to explore the power of imagination.

The store will play host to a series of talks in a speciallydesigned ‘Imaginarium’ space located on Level 1. It’s all based around founder Harry Gordon Selfridge’s belief that imagination is the mother of originality; the antidote to routine. Lucy’s talk promises to be anything but routine.

“Selfridges approached me and it seemed to be a great opportunity to work on something that’s very close to my heart, namely the use of imagination in innovative and interesting ways. The use of imagination in science.

Having co-written George’s Secret Key to the Universe with her father, an adventure story about a small boy called George who finds a way to travel around the solar system, Lucy has been doing hugely successful talks in schools across the country.

“My Selfridges presentation will be an adapted version of my talk aimed at school pupils. Grown ups are interested in all the things that kids are interested in and they want it to be explained, as kids do, in a way they can understand. Hopefully that's what I'll be doing.”

So how does she do it? How does she make the 99.9% (perhaps 99.8%) of us understand the things her father understands?

“I started writing children’s books to try and explain his work and the work of his colleagues to a young audience – so he’s sort of progenitor of this whole series of talks and books. I found out pretty quickly that the way you explain incredibly complex scientific theories is through storytelling. Through use of one’s imagination. Have a narrator. A central character. Send them on a journey and the audience will go with them, young or old, learning as they go.”

Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin will feature. James Watson and Francis Crick – discoverers of DNA – are discussed, before moving on to the scientists working today.

“Pivotally,” says Lucy, "we discuss how they used their imaginations in their work. It’s a great cosmic journey in which we travel across the universe – seeing extraordinary things.”

“And the whole thing ends with a message from my father – a message about what science means to him.

It’s a wonderful way to wrap things up because you can hear a pin drop when he talks. And hopefully, most importantly, you'll go away thinking: “You know what? I actually understood some of that.”

The talk is an engaging mix of live discussion, video and even animated footage. Lucy asks the questions we all asked as kids but, where your GCSE Physics teacher probably fell flat, she answers them.

“We discuss what it would be like to walk on another planet, knowing that you're the first person ever to step out of your space ship and step foot on another world.

Walk On at the MAC Birmingham

Sat 8th February - Sun 30th March “Walk On" is the first exhibition to examine the astonishingly varied ways in which artists since the 1960s have undertaken a seemingly universal act – taking a walk – as their means to create new types of art. The exhibition offers an as-yetunwritten history of recent art practice. It proposes that, across all four of the last decades, artists have worked as kinds of explorers, whether making their marks on rural wildernesses or acting as urban expeditionaries.

The exhibition brings together nearly 40 artists who all make work by undertaking a journey on foot. In doing so, they all stake out new artistic territories. Here there work will take over mac’s exhibition spaces, with their work encouraging the viewer to tread their own path.

BOND MARKETS The weakening impact Tom Ware

T

he bond market has weakened on Ben Bernankeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comments and has yet to claw back all of its losses. This weakness is good news for some and bad news for others. Obviously, it is bad for bond fund holders in the short-term. The average fund in the IMA Sterling Corporate Bond sector is down 1.3% over the past month (source: FE). All categories of bond fund have moved lower.

It is also bad for mortgage holders. Mortgage rates are usually linked to the government bond markets.

If prices fall in government bond markets, mortgage rates rise. Homeowners have been used to being able to remortgage at very low rates and they may see a small rise in mortgage offers. There is also a wider economic impact. The housing market is important for economic stability and growth and there is a danger that higher mortgage rates may dent it.

However, it would be good news for savers. Banks should be able to offer higher rates on savings accounts. Until interest rates rise, this is unlikely to move higher than a few percent, but it could provide some respite for those who want to keep some of their wealth in cash.

It should also help annuity prices. Annuities are also priced from government bonds and their weakness should lead to an improvement in rates. This may take time to filter through, but again, may bode better for those investors planning to buy an annuity over the next few years.

It is also better for those wanting to buy into corporate or government bonds now, because they will be buying in at a lower price and getting a higher income from those investments. It is tempting to see bond market weakness as a problem - but there are winners and losers.

n May 2013 as Chessgrove Park turned 7 years old, plans were afoot to transform the delightful rural retreat into a specialist leisure and learning centre.

Seven months on, Chessgrove Park has now completed its transformation into a dedicated children and families’ facility. Chessgrove Park Day Nursery, which was rated

I run a number of E-Safety presentations that help parents keep their children safe online. A head teacher at a recent presentation to a Worcestershire school mentioned a great piece of filtering software that can be installed on desktops, tablets and smart phones. Talking of the plethora of technological devices available (no doubt many were purchased at Christmas), there is a lot of head scratching going on in schools as to what the ideal computer is for teachers and pupils. I am asked to recommend solutions on an almost daily basis and this in a nutshell is what I say. First of all, if you are looking for a piece of technology you need to decide what you want to use it for and where you are going to use it.

Tablets are great for playing games and browsing the web but may be challenging for writing a book or editing a video. Technology is by its very nature changing all the time and there is no doubt that we are doing things on our smart phones that we’d never envisaged even a few years ago. So in the future we may be doing less work on desktop computers. I don’t think we are quite there yet though. Equally, if not more importantly, is the way that we ourselves are evolving to use touch technology. Through a programme of daily excursions the group enjoyed the amazing sights of volcanoes, lava fields, black sand, glaciers, floating icebergs, geysers, boiling mud and spectacular waterfalls.

“At Thingvellir National Park we were able to see where the edges of the American and Eurasian plates are moving apart,” says Dr Jane Thomas. “At the Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon the students were amazed to see icebergs on the sea shore.

The trip was a fantastic opportunity for them to experience the wonders of nature in this wonderful outdoor classroom.”

A different kind of outdoor challenge was faced by St George’s under 14’s boy’s football team when they battled for the local league trophy in 2013. With three talented young players additionally coached at the Birmingham City Academy there was a strong team to take the school through to victory.

“All teams have made tremendous progress over the past few years,” says Joe Finn, teacher of Physical Education.

“In November the under 16’s made it through to the last sixteen of the National Cup for Independent Schools and I have high hopes for further success as the season unfolds.”

Success was also enjoyed by the drama department in December. Under the directorship of Adele Waites, who joined the school last September, 45 children took part in a visually stunning production of The Arabian Nights. Adele’s appointment strengthens the school’s srama department and she is looking forward to supporting the curriculum with a variety of performance based work.

WINTER WHEELS The need for a 4 x 4 Adrian Hunt

I

t's getting to the point now when every household needs a 4 X 4. Just look at the floods we've had recently.

In a normal hatchback, or saloon it can be really dangerous going through water and even then if you were to get stuck, would your insurance pay up? Or are you left with a big bill and no car?

Let's face it, the whole country has been hit or will be hit by floods at some point so it pays to be sure we can get to work or get the kids to school, or go and see Auntie Joan when you need to. Also, we haven't seen any snow yet! So, the only way to deal with the bad conditions is to have a 4 X 4 available.

Now, as we know there are many types of 4 X 4/SUV's on offer and it depends whether it's your main or only car, or a second car, or a car you can all use, "in the family", as they say.

If it's your only car then you may wish for a smart one with "all the bells and whistles", such as a Range Rover or Porsche. But if it's a not frequently used one, which is specifically for bad conditions then there are always the Defenders and utility Toyotas and Nissans around.

One of the main issues with a 4 X 4 is that they are not particularly economical, due to their weight and four wheel drive mechanisms. But they are improving as time goes on.

One interesting sum on this is: if you had a Range Rover 4.4 V8 petrol, or a Range Rover 3.0 Diesel and covered 5000 miles per year, over 2 years the difference in fuel costs would only be approximately £250 at the pumps.

Then, if you do decide to go 4 X 4, do you go for used or new? The new ones are now cheaper to run and can be affordable on some of the manufacturer’s finance deals.

But, there is a big choice of used ones out there and for the last year or so, and the next year or so, their values have held up pretty well. So over the next few years the cost would be less and you could have a nice car to enjoy and not worry about the weather conditions ahead.

McLaren MP4 -12C Remembrance Monday Liam Bird

ecisions, decisions; an about-turn at the roundabout ahead of me and I’d soon be back at the MTC, the almost science-fiction-like HQ of Formula One legends McLaren. A left would take me to Brooklands, the first purpose built motor circuit ever constructed on British soil. A right and it’s the A320 through Woking.

Turning back isn’t an option. As much as I’d love to wander around The McLaren Technology Centre reading the inscriptions on the trophies and gazing at the cars, McLaren are very particular about who goes where once they’ve got past the gatehouse. And, call me old fashioned if you like, but as emotive as the old banking at Brooklands is, I tend to prefer my racing circuits intact and without the addition of retail parks, so a left it isn’t either. The A320 it is then.

I flick the indicator stalk upwards and nose out in to Monday morning’s commuter traffic. Letting the oil, water and the snug fitting cabin of the MP4 - 12C warm through. I make my way through Send and on towards Farnham.

“Are you looking Mike?” asks the gardener trimming the hedges as I pull in to the Cemetery on West Road. “Your car, it’s a bit of a give away. Mike’s over there, in the corner, by his father”.

John Michael (Mike) Hawthorn was Britain’s first world champion racing driver. Securing the title in 1958 he took the title by just one point, beating someone called Stirling Moss in the process. After announcing his retirement at the end of that year’s season, due in-part as a result of the tragic death of his Ferrari team-mate

EdgeMagazine Peter Collins, Hawthorn decided to return to Farnham to run the family garage. On January 22nd 1959 he was killed when his Jaguar left the Guildford bypass and struck a tree. To this day, no-one’s quite sure what exactly happened.

I pay my respects to “The Farnham Flyer” by thumbing the Spider’s starter and indulgently blipping the throttle a few times before making my way south and back out on to the A3. Quite what the onlookers think of my 8 cylinder symphony as I leave the cemetery gates I’m not certain, but I’d like to think both Hawthorns junior and senior would have approved.

Heading for an appointment at just north of Chichester, I let the MP4 - 12C’s auto-box find its own way into seventh gear before leaving the dual carriageway, circumnavigating the pretty market town of Petersfield and crossing the border into West Sussex. First though, there’s time for a little fun.

Up until the early 20’s the road to South Harting doubled as a Hillclimb Circuit. So, seeing as the sun’s come out, I fold back the Spider’s roof, switch the gearbox into manual, and roll its power-delivery setting round to Track. With 616bhp at its disposal, a carbon fibre chassis and steering that was signed off by both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, the MP4 - 12C makes astonishingly light work of the sinuous climb.

A couple flicks of my left index finger and a flex of my right toe and in seconds the digital speedo is showing a third figure. The long straights and flowing curves that lead me past Chilgrove are devoured in what feels like a warp-speed blur.

My destination is Goodwood because the circuit links both Hawthorn and McLaren. Hawthorn made his first appearance in a racing car here, McLaren his last.

In 1959 as the world mourned the loss of one Formula One legend it gained another. Bruce McLaren took victory in the U.S. Grand Prix at Sebring of the same year and became the then youngest man to ever win an F1 World Championship race. In June 1970 the racerturned-constructor was tragically killed here on the Lavant Straight when rear bodywork of the M8D he was testing came adrift at speed. The lack of aerodynamic downforce destabilized the car, causing it to spin, leave the track, and hit a bunker.

In the Brooklands Garden behind Goodwood’s pits and just steps away from a statue of Hawthorn, there’s a simple yet elegant memorial to the softly-spoken New Zealander whose name is as equally synonymous to motor-racing as that of Tyrrell, Brabham or Ferrari. Bruce McLaren was 32.

Kindly, I’ve been granted 20 minutes on the grid so as I can photograph the Spider. The temptation to take a lap of the circuit is almost too great. However, the significance of a (nearly) orange McLaren at Goodwood on a quiet day isn’t lost on me and no-matter what my ability behind the wheel I’ll never be an F1 world champion: besides, the drive down here demonstrated the Spider’s limitations are way beyond mine.

THE VANITY OF SMALL DIFFERENCES Six tapestries by Grayson Perry Lucinda Bunn

T

he The Heart of England galleries are looking forward to another year of spectacular exhibitions and we’re kicking off our 2014 showcase with Grayson Perry’s The Vanity of Small Differences, which is first being displayed at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery from February 14th to May 11th 2014.

The exhibition presents six tapestries created by Perry alongside the filming of his BAFTA awardwinning Channel 4 series, In the Best Possible Taste.

The programme tells a story of class mobility and the influence social class has on our aesthetic taste.

Inspired by William Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress, the six tapestries chart the “class journey” made by the fictional Tim Rakewell and include many of the characters, incidents and objects that Grayson Perry encountered on his own journeys through Sunderland, Tunbridge Wells and the Cotswolds for the television series.

The intricacies and follies of the British class system remain a taboo subject on the most part but Perry has talked to the man on the street, literally, to understand what defines the way we dress and the way we decorate our houses. Perry describes his Channel 4 series as ‘a safari amongst the taste tribes of Britain’. His discoveries are monumentally encapsulated in these magnificent tapestries which explore the ‘emotional investment we make in the things we choose to live with, wear, eat, read or drive’.

The six vibrant and highly detailed tapestries presented at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will bear the

influence both of early Renaissance painting and of William Hogarth’s moralising series. The UK tour of the tapestries is supported by the Art Fund and the Sfumato Foundation.

WALLS WITH WOUNDS At the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum

Walls with Wounds is a landmark exhibition by Dale vN Marshall, a Coventry University Fine Art graduate, on display from 15th February to 18th May 2014.

Originally a graffiti artist spray-painting the walls of Bristol under the tag ‘Vermin’, Marshall was sectioned in 1999 in one of Britain’s oldest asylums, St Lawrence’s Hospital in Cornwall. Walls with Wounds draws inspiration not only from graffiti and Marshall’s time at St Lawrence’s, but also from his studio, a former Victorian workhouse in North Wales, its decaying walls inscribed by children over 100 years ago.

Each painting is inspired by a dramatic memory and represents a healing journey through physical destruction and repair. Marshall’s layered, multimedia works consist of a symbolic language of abstract expression and mark making. The result is a series of vibrant, powerful works documenting his personal journey from rebellion to rehabilitation.

Marshall strikes a balance between the frightening and the beautiful by accepting and embracing his past. These raw, emotive paintings show that hope and redemption are possible, whatever darkness may lie beneath our scars.
