Notes on notation: Some flute notes end with a slide down, a so-called microtonal bend. The slide should last the duration of the note to which it is attached. In this example, the first beat is held to normal pitch while the second beat is a slow slide down.

Some flute notes are marked breathily. This marking is cancelled with the indication ord.

The intent is to achieve a sound like a primitive wooden or bamboo flute.

A trill extension mark (without tr) is used to indicate a slow persistent vibrato such as that found in yuri or kom-buki playing on a shakuhachi.

Tempo fluctuations are indicated above the flute staff. In order to avoid cluttering the score, they are not duplicated over the soprano part.
