Community Rebound (Studio): Under the supervision of Judith Kinnard, our studio explored the possible ways of saving the Phyllis Wheatley school by transforming it into a community center. The program of my scheme was to create a business by devoting one third of the site to farming and creating a youth development program to work the land.

In addition to farming the program would also involve the operation of a restaurant on site.

This would allow the youths to see a product from inception to its fruition. In addition to this, the idea for the existing building was to salvage some classrooms, but break the imposing scale of the school by extracting a portion of the overall classrooms. This created not only expansive views for the remaining spaces, but also allowed for the elevated patios to serve as outdoor classrooms.

Broad Community Connections (Tulane City Center):

Following the purchase of a new space for the medical school’s health clinic, Tulane University asked the City Center to come up with an urban strategy for the building’s surrounding area. A team of Professor Tiffany Lin, Nels Erickson, Jade Jiambutr, and myself were assembled to deal with the current lack of any pedestrian related amenities along the Broad Street corridor.

Through our study, design phases, and community outreach, we developed a series of nodes that could be deployed at various key intersections. However, for the purposes of clarity, the images shown here only deal with one of those intersections.

Bayou Sukkah (Tulane Hillel): In conjuntion with the harvest festival, the Tulane Hillel approached Garrett Jacobs and myself about organizing and participating in a design competition in celebration of the Jewish holiday of Sukkout. That year we built one “Sukkah� (the centerpiece of the festival).

The one shown here was built the following year when we organized three teams. I was the leader of this group. Together we designed and built what was unanimously considered to be the most used of all three designs. The material used for the roof was the inspiration for the rest of the design. According to tradition, we were only allowed to use natural, unprocessed plant-life. Our group decided that using Spanish moss, an abundant local plant, would give the space its own distinct character.
