Community Rebound (Studio): Under the supervision of Judith Kinnard, our studio explored the possible ways of saving the Phyllis Wheatley school by transforming it into a community center. The program of my scheme was to create a business by devoting one third of the site to farming and creating a youth development program to work the land. In addition to farming the program would also involve the operation of a restaurant on site. This would allow the youths to see a product from inception to its fruition. In addition to this, the idea for the existing building was to salvage some classrooms, but break the imposing scale of the school by extracting a portion of the overall classrooms. This created not only expansive views for the remaining spaces, but also allowed for the elevated patios to serve as outdoor classrooms.
