Monastery of Woodcraft & Light
Final Year Project | MArchD
I used the the AI image generation software Midjourney to explore timber, religious lighting and religious architecture. My project, the Monastery of Woodcraft & Light, serves as a collaborative community woodworking centre and sits above the ancient ruins of Abingdon’s forgotten Abbey. The old Abbey was built, destroyed, rebuilt and extended on for around 800 years.

The building will act in a similar way that the Monastery had for Abingdon’s residents before it was finally dissolved. A local wood recycling service which already exists, Oxford Wood Recycling, will also obtain a part of the building to hire and train disadvantaged people to work in the wood and craft trade. The timber arches which run throughout the building make the light flutter and play as local residents work within the designated workshops within the building. This provides a spiritual and therapeutic boost to the users of the building.
