INTRODUCTION About the DARTOUT project The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic prompted significant changes, urging us to explore novel approaches to work, social interaction, and daily life. During the State of the Union address on September 16, 2020, President von der Leyen underscored the imperative to transform this era into Europe’s „Digital Decade.” The Dartout project embraced this forward-looking perspective, evident in its title: Digital Art Therapy Tools to Overcome Addiction United Together. Faced with the challenges imposed by COVID-19, the project’s central aim is to process the social inclusion of individuals undergoing treatment in addiction centers across three European countries (Poland, Greece, and Italy). The emphasis

lies in fostering personal development through art therapy, harnessing digital tools to facilitate communication and collaboration, thus surmounting the constraints imposed by the pandemic. The initiative is designed to enhance the personal development of patients within the participating centers, elevating the entire therapeutic cycle through theoretical knowledge and art therapy tools. Concurrently, therapeutic community workers are actively engaged in cultivating skills and competencies in art therapy. The project unfolds across three primary phases, aligning with three intellectual outputs. The initial phase involves research and study activities: A comprehensive survey was conducted to evaluate the needs of patients undergoing treatment in therapeutic communities in the three involved countries and to discern the requirements of educators for conducting art therapy activities in these communities. A study focusing on good practices of art therapy in therapeutic communities for drug addiction was executed in the involved countries. Special attention was given to practices utilizing digital tools or adaptable for such use. The identified good practices underwent thorough evaluation by art therapists and educators within the project, with the selection of the most effective ones for project implementation. The second phase engaged educators and art therapists in a collaborative training event, facilitating the exchange and practical evaluation of the most effective methods and techniques. This phase aimed to craft a comprehensive training scheme for therapeutic community workers eager to implement art therapy activities within their communities. In the concluding phase, an art therapy program for rehabilitating individuals from drug addiction, incorporating the use of digital tools, was devised and implemented in the participating therapeutic centers. Collaboratively, Greek, Italian, and Polish organizations employed digital tools to conduct joint art therapy sessions, involving both educators and patients (MONAR, 2024). The overarching goal and innovative concept of the project revolved around integrating digital tools into art therapy activities within therapeutic communities (TCs). The documentation and evaluation of good practices, coupled with the needs analysis of patients and educators for implementing art therapy activities in TCs, PAGE 6

established the groundwork for a positive impact on the involved centers. Moreover, it laid the foundation for the potential transferability of results to diverse contexts (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration SAMHSA, 2019).
Theoretical background, objectives and general conditions for the implementation of the program The main goal of the project was the social inclusion of people residing in therapeutic communities for drug addicts in 3 European countries (Greece, Italy and Poland) and the process of their personal growth, through art therapy also using digital tools. The main phases of the project were three and corresponded to the three intellectual outputs: Output Title

In particular, there was performed a survey on good practices that use digital tools or could be process for the use of digital tools. The second phase involved educators/art-therapists from the three partner countries in a joint training event to exchange best methods and techniques for working in CTs. In the last phase, an art therapy program using digital tools was implemented in the therapeutic centers involved. The use of digital tools in carrying out art therapy activities in CTs was an overall goal and innovative idea of the project, as was the description and evaluation of best practices. The aim of the DARTOUT project was also to set the conditions for a positive impact of art and digital on the centers involved and the possibility of transferring the results to other settings. Best practices identified during the implementation of the project will be disseminated through scientific publications.
Art therapy Art therapy is a form of expressive therapy that utilizes the creative process of making art to improve and enhance physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It involves the use of various art materials and techniques, allowing individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a non-verbal way. Art therapy is facilitated by trained art therapists who guide participants through the artistic process (Smith, 2015). The main way of work in art Therapy are: Creative Expression: Art therapy encourages individuals to express themselves creatively through different art forms such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and other visual arts. The emphasis is on the process of creation rather than the final product. Non-Verbal Communication: It provides a non-verbal means of communication, making it particularly effective for individuals who may find it challenging to express themselves verbally. The artwork created serves as a visual representation of thoughts and emotions. Therapeutic Relationship: Art therapists establish a therapeutic relationship with participants, creating a safe and supportive environment. The therapist

interprets the artwork in collaboration with the individual, helping them gain insights into their emotions and experiences. Self-Exploration: Participants are encouraged to explore their inner thoughts and feelings through the creative process. This self-exploration can lead to increased self-awareness, personal growth, and a deeper understanding of one’s emotions. Mindfulness and Relaxation: Engaging in art-making can promote mindfulness and relaxation. Focusing on the creative process can be meditative, helping individuals reduce stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges. Treatment Goals: Art therapy is used in various therapeutic settings to address a wide range of issues, including mental health conditions, trauma, addiction, and behavioral disorders. It can be integrated into individual or group therapy sessions. Integration of Art and Psychology: Art therapists often have a background in both art and psychology, combining knowledge of artistic techniques with an understanding of psychological principles. This integration allows for a holistic approach to healing. Adaptability: Art therapy is adaptable and can be tailored to the needs and preferences of individuals. It can be utilized with people of process, from children to seniors, and is effective in diverse cultural and clinical settings. Art therapy is recognized as a valuable therapeutic approach that complements traditional verbal therapy. It provides a unique avenue for selfdiscovery, emotional expression, and healing.

Common Elements of Workshops: All workshops promote creativity, openness, as well as the development of interpersonal skills. They are spaces where participants not only gain new skills but also integrate team experiences, positively influencing the development of each participant.
Overall Summary These workshops, despite their diversity, constitute powerful therapeutic support tools. Both for individuals dealing with addiction and for specialists, they open up space for new experiences, reflection, and the development of skills applicable both in the healing process and in everyday life. They open doors to alternative sources of expression, collaboration, and the discovery of creative potential. Regardless of the target group, these workshops have the potential to transform participants' lives through personal and artistic development.
