Global Conversations: Privacy in the Digital Age led by Professor William McGeveran

When: Wednesday, April 8; 5:30 – 7:30 P Where: Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis Cost: Free and open to the public. Advance registration REQUESTED.

Great Decisions is a dynamic citizen education and discussion program, sponsored nationally by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA) and coordinated locally by the Minnesota International Center (MIC). Global Conversations are cosponsored by the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library.

What is “privacy” in the digital age? Fearful of British spying, the founding fathers granted citizens significant protections in the Constitution. Now, the tables have turned: Concerns about what some see as a U.S. “dragnet” and unwarranted privacy intrusions have compelled other countries to revamp their own privacy protections. Legislation, both at home and abroad, hasn’t kept pace with technological developments, leaving some wondering if privacy as we know it is dead. On April 8, William McGeveran, Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, will lead a conversation on privacy in today’s world. Professor William McGeveran specializes in information law, including data privacy, intellectual property, communications and technology, and free speech. His current research focuses on legal and other rules governing digital identity and data privacy, ranging from online impersonation to the privacy features of Facebook and other social networks.

FUN FACTS

GERMANY

Dazzle your friends

Germany is known as ‘the land of poets and thinkers’, or das land de dichter und denker; Bach, Beethoven and Goethe were all German, alongside composers Händel, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Wagner and R. Strauss. Some of the world’s greatest German philosophers include Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Heidegger.

Germany has more cultural activities and places than any other country – it’s a cultured place, with 6,200 museums, 820 theatres, 130 professional orchestras and 8,800 libraries in 2013. There are more museums, exhibition halls and art galleries than any other country (and not only in the big cities), with more people going to exhibitions than to soccer matches.

Our honorary chairs, Ingrid Lenz Harrison and Alfred Harrison, along with the Gala Committee Chairs Christina Tiefenbacher-Hudson and Rachel Walsh are looking forward to welcoming you to a one-of-a-kind celebration of Germany at a private home in Independence. There will be delicious German food; the Tour the World Auction, which will offer opportunities for lunch and a tour the German House in New York with the Director of the German Center for Research and Innovation, lunch with the German Consul General in Chicago, and other unique experiences opportunities; and German-focused entertainment. Join us on Saturday, June 13, to celebrate this country of musicians, inventors, thinkers, poets, readers, and museum attendees! Tickets are $200; sponsorship opportunities start at $500.

Germany boasts some of world’s most famous inventions - you can thank the Germans for the light bulb, the automated calculator, and the automobile. That’s not all – the Germans are also credited for the discovery of insulin, the invention of the clarinet, the pocket watch, television (partly), paraffin, petrol/gasoline & Diesel engines, the automobile engine, differential gear and other important devices, the motorcycle, the jet engine, the LCD screen and the Walkman.

Germany was the first country in the world to adopt Daylight Saving Time – DST, also known as summer time, began in 1916, in the midst of WWI.

Germany is one of the world’s leading book nations – publishing around 94,000 titles every year. It’s also where you’ll find international book publishing’s most import event, the International Frankfurt Book Fair. The facts are perhaps not surprising, seeing the Gutenberg press – a revolution in the printing world using movable type – was invented in Germany. source: Expatica.com

Bringing the World to Minnesota and Minnesota to the World

With over 40 high school teams registered, MIC’s annual Academic WorldQuest once again offered students across the metro area an opportunity to show their global chops. This was COMPETITION –10 teams finishing within 4 points of each other is proof of the hard work and global engagement of these teens. The first place team from St. Paul Academy and Summit School will represent Minnesota in Washington, D.C. at the national competition in late April. Good luck!

Academic WorldQuest

Quotes from students:

Throughout the years, we’ve found ourselves at the center of national and international issues and events ranging from protests regarding radical Islamist terrorists to the implementation of universal healthcare. By now, we’ve all turned 18 and can vote. Seeing this, we want to explore the world around us, hence our participation in WorldQuest.

Thank you to David Winton Bell and General Mills for sponsoring Academic WorldQuest

Here is why we participate in a poem:

Work-ethic Open-minded Respect Long–lasting knowledge Driven Quintessential

We participate to further our knowledge of world issues and current events. We also chose to participate to help us develop better studying tactics, and schedules! I personally found out that I learn better if I study in small increments, multiple times throughout the day. Mainly during advisory and after robotics!

Underrated and unexpected Essential Smart

As a school and as a team, we Teamwork wanted to participate in AWQ for the incredible opportunity. The chance to, as a team, travel to DC is enough to motivate anyone! The competition to be here (We have had over 20 students vie for the 8 spots) was fierce, with a current events’ quiz and multiple tie-breakers. We’re thrilled to be here – Thank you!

Did you know?

In addition to Academic WorldQuest, MIC also organizes a Community WorldQuest in the Twin Cities, a WorldQuest at the Alworth Institute in Duluth, and specially-designed competitions for Corporate Members for globally-focused team building? If you are interested in knowing more about on-site WorldQuests for your company or organization, please contact Danielle Tessmer at 612.626.2406. MIC CORPORATE MEMBERS

Globally minded companies that value membership with the Minnesota International Center Board Chair, Leni Moore, presenting the MIC Ambassador Award to Dr. Josef Mestenhauser

It is with great sadness that I report the recent passing of Dr. Josef Mestenhauser, one of MIC’s original founders. Joe and the other founders of MIC believed that diplomacy was not the exclusive business of professional diplomats but could be done by citizens as part of their civic duty – and these principles remain the same for MIC today. Thank you, Joe, for your mentoring, friendship, vision and leadership over the past 60 years. On a happier note, I am pleased to say that it is a really busy time of year at MIC … with a full plate of programs, such as GlobalSocial, Global Conversation, and two Ambassadorial visits. Also, don’t forget to look for your invitation to the Celebration of Germany Gala – it will be in the mail shortly. MIC’s galas seem to get better every year and Celebration of Germany shows every sign of keeping up that track record And just to keep you up-to-date with the staff changes at MIC; while we are bidding a fond farewell to Cassandra McGuiness, our ILVP manager, we are welcoming Kristi Pogatchnik as our new Individual Membership Manager. Kristi joins us from a recent membership position at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. Please take a moment to introduce yourself to her at any of the upcoming events – she’s eager to meet as many MIC members as possible as soon as she can. I look forward to seeing you at these great programs over the next month or so.

Join us on Tuesday, April 28, for a discussion on the current financial stability and economic outlook of the European Union. Invited speakers include Ioanna Efthymiadou, Chicago EU Chair and Consul General of Greece in Chicago, and Christa Tiefenbacher-Hudson, Honorary Consul of Germany in Minnesota, with moderator Barbara Müller from Fredrikson & Byron.
