That you wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet so many fascinating international visitors without our dinner hosting program or our GlobalSocials. That you wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience ethnic dining with speakers from the country whose food you are enjoying without our Culture through Cuisine program. That you wouldn’t have the opportunity to hear from local expert speakers about foreign policy topics without our Great Decisions program. That you wouldn’t have the opportunity to hear Ambassadors and other dignitaries give their views of what is going on in the world without our World Affairs program. MIC’s Global Conversations is a monthly series featuring presentations based on topics of the Great Decisions program. MIC is the proud Minnesota coordinator for Great Decisions, a national program of the Foreign Policy Association. Each presentation features a local speaker followed by discussion.

Russia and the Near Abroad As calls for closer ties with the EU failed, Ukrainians took to the streets in late 2013. As the movement later known as the Euromaidan, or “Euro Square,” pulled western Ukraine closer to its European neighbors, another powerful force threatened to tear away the country’s eastern half - Russia. Putin’s pushback against European expansionism has the West wondering, if Putin’s Russia isn’t afraid to take an aggressive stance against Europeanization in Ukraine, what does that mean for the rest of Russia’s neighbors? On February 11, former U.S. Foreign Service Officer Margo Squire will lead a Global Conversation on Russia’s future in Europe. She was a career diplomat for thirty years, serving in Munich, Moscow, Melbourne, Baku, Ankara and Washington, D.C. Among many posts in her distinguished career, Margo served at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow (1986-90) and also as Director of the Press and Public Outreach Office in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (2003-2005).

Human Trafficking in the 21st Century Human trafficking creates multibillions in international trade annually and continues to be one of the fastest growing criminal industries. While undeniably a global phenomenon, the U.S., as one of the world’s leading human trafficking importers, bears a special responsibility to combat this practice. Various treaties and laws have been enacted to prevent trafficking, but what more can be done to truly understand and combat the exploitation of victims? And how has Minnesota helped lead the nation to stronger, more victim-centered antitrafficking legislation? On March 11, Michele Garnett McKenzie, Advocacy Director at The Advocates for Human Rights, will lead a discussion on the issues surrounding this worldwide and local problem. She joined The Advocates in 1999 as a staff attorney representing asylum seekers and immigration detainees. Previously, she served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Executive Office for Immigration Review in Arizona and Nevada. In 2011, she successfully led The Advocates’ effort to pass groundbreaking legislation protecting sexually exploited youth in Minnesota. Cosponsor: Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library When: 5:30 – 7:30 P Where: Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis Cost: Free and open to the public. Bringing the World to Minnesota and Minnesota to the World

We asked a variety of members to tell us why they became MIC members, what they enjoy about MIC programs, and why they recommend people become an MIC member. Unfortunately, we didn’t have room to print all their answers but here are some of their responses: We were taking a tour of the Guthrie Theater and someone talked about MIC and the possible neat experiences with foreign students. We became involved in escorting students for Classroom Connection. And then got “hooked!”

The speakers are always intelligent and give wonderful insight to whatever topic they are addressing. No better way to learn about foreign countries than to hear from those that live there or are ambassadors to there.

It’s hard to choose! We really enjoyed the last GlobalSocial at the Minneapolis Club. The enRoute programs are fun times to network, learn, and eat some good food. We have also liked attending the Global Conversations; MIC is great at bringing in experts for that night’s topic.

MIC is a great place to meet globally minded people from Minnesota and other people from around the world. It includes everyone from students to the CEOs of Minnesota’s top companies!

We had each been involved with international groups in college and loved getting to meet new people and learn more about the world. It was tougher to find this after college but after we attended a couple of MIC events, we realized that it was an awesome forum for us to meet globallyminded people, learn from wonderful speakers, and get involved in our community.

Great Decisions is my favorite MIC program because it always has fantastic speakers, such as Tom Hanson, and other professionals from the foreign service. When Margo Squire and Daniel Getahun spoke at Wayzata High School for my Government class in December, it sparked a lot of excitement among my classmates and me. I would recommend anyone looking for an enriching experience and anyone who enjoys taking part in a thought-provoking discussion to join. MIC has helped me connect to a higher level of thinking and it’s just a great time.

I pretty much enjoy the complete arsenal of MIC programs. I truly believe that selecting a country every year and working on business, educational and cultural programs to bring that country to Minnesotans and vice versa with the Gala is the cherry on the top. With the globalization of our world and our lives, MIC is the best Minnesota resource to educate, engage and help create experiences for its members. When I first came to MN/US in 1976 as a graduate student to attend U of M, the first place I went to was MIC to get connected to the Turkish community, and during my years as a student, MIC became the place where our social activities took place. So joining MIC as a member and a Board member in 2012 was like coming home to me.

To be with like-minded people who either are bicultural themselves or have deep knowledge of another culture, or interested to get out of their comfort zone. My favorite memories are related to meeting very interesting guests at our home and engaging in deep conversations with them. Just recently a young woman journalist shared with us her hopes and fears of the upcoming election in Spain.

We hosted a dinner on December 23, 1980 for four visitors in this country to learn about democracy … 1 from Mali, 1 from Burundi and 2 from Thailand. We have stayed in touch with one of the visitors from Thailand, seeing him in London as well as in Bangkok. Our children stay in touch with him too through Facebook.

It is a way of broadening understanding of the rest of the world in this global society.

Why Don’t You Become An MIC Member Too! You’ll have the opportunity to meet people like Amy and Andrew, Patrick, Duffy and Bill, Joann and Don, Karen and Ertugrul , Kaimay and Joseph, Nicholas and many others. Whether it’s learning about other cultures and countries through dinner hosting international visitors, enjoying a local ethnic restaurant, listening to an expert speak about world affairs, discussing foreign policy topics or just meeting other people who are interested in the world, the Minnesota International Center is a one-stop global resource for you.
