Our Logo CITY LOGO

CLARINDA iowa

Our city logo is based on the idea of quilting which personifies our close-knit community and down home atmosphere. The triangles that form the logo along with the visual diamond that is formed from the whole logo stems from the individual squares that make up the quilt. The orange red color comes from our city bird the cardinal. A fun fact is that if you rearrange the letters of Clarinda you can spell the word ‘cardinal.’

INSPIRATION The logo was inspired by quilt squares that were made up of triangles. The pattern dervied from the logo is also an extension of the patterning formed in quilts. The pattern is also abstracted, modernized and simplified to emphasize both the homey and modern city qualities of Clarinda.

Along with the original orange red logo for our city, Clarinda has a set of four logos that represent our four most important values. The four pillars that make up the values of Clarinda are community, education, nature, and music. Clarinda prides itself in our community service, our top-notch education for our children,

the nature that surrounds our town and the music that comes from our famous big band leader Glenn Miller. The lines that form the individual lines of these four logos come from the beautiful lines that form from rows of corn in the fields surrounding our city. In the summer, lush green and amber in the fall.

COMMUNITY

EDUCATION

Clarinda is the home of Miss Jessie Fields (Shambaugh), a rural teacher who developed a club of farm boys in connection with the Clarinda Chautaugua at the age of eighteen. Her boys became trained in judging livestock, winning honors at Iowa State College and top place in the National Judging Contest at Omaha.
The club of farm boys grew into the “4-H Clubs” and Miss Fields, who later married I.W. Shambaugh, has been nationally honored as the Mother of 4-H.

The Carnegie Foundation funded the Lied Public Library in Clarinda, Iowa. After Mr. William Orr was appointed as a member to the Board of Trustees, he began negotiations with the Carnegie Library Foundation to acquire funds for a library building. In 1908, his tenacious efforts paid off and $15,000 was granted by Andrew Carnegie to build a public library. The Board also decided to extend the use of the library to neighboring towns and townships of Page County, by the creation of branch stations in the various surrounding communities. The library was a pioneer is this type of service and interest was manifested throughout the state due to its success.
