Café Angelique TENAFLY

Café Angelique FRENCH I just moved into the area and was thrilled at discovering the quaint town of Tenafly. Cafe Angelique stood out immediately because of it’s architecture. The vibe is great, an old train station converted into a French cafe, while still keeping it’s historic charm. The salads are worth the trip alone. Inventive combinations, such as mangos and goat cheese, that are absolutely delicious. Even the side salads are amazing. Mixed greens, bean sprouts, carrots all covered in house vinaigrette. Yum. And the paninis, out of this world. Crisp, and made to order. I highly recommend the spicy chicken, not too spicy, and overloaded with chicken. I was so full, I couldn’t appreciate the mixed green salad they served with it. If you want to grab a coffee, or a nice tea and read a book or people watch, this is your stop. The lattes are excellent and they have forty kinds of muffins, rotating daily. The carrot-apple-pear was to die for, and they even warmed it up for me. If you’re looking for a great place to sit and sip on something, have a decent salad or a European breakfast whilst reading the paper you need not go further than Café Angelique. P. S. The lemonade with fresh mint gets high marks.

Blue Moon Mexican Cafe WOODCLIFF LAKE

Blue Moon Mexican Café MEXICAN This place is a great find for people craving Mexican food in an area of the country known more for pizza than burritos or tacos (remember the Pace salsa commercial with the cowboys angered by salsa made in New York City?). Speaking of salsa, the salsa here is very good. Good enough that you don’t need guacamole. Even so, we always end up getting the guacamole anyway because my wife and I are absolute guacfreaks. The guacamole here is always fresh and delicious. I’ve also come to the conclusion that the entree to order at Blue Moon is the steak burrito platter with tomatillo sauce. The burritos are thin and they don’t smother them with sauce like most Mexican places. The real draw to this dish is the steak. It’s seasoned and cooked to perfection. Really, REALLY tasty and they don’t drown it in sauce so the individual flavors shine. One last tip: Go on Sundays. It’s not nearly as busy and parking is much more readily available since all of the shops in the area are closed.

Baumgart’s ENGLEWOOD

Baumgart’s FUSION This place is a bit bizarre, but in an the best way possible. It’s a Chinese/Japanese fusion restaurant in an old 1950s style ice cream parlor. Not your typical Asian restaurant setting, which makes it a fun unique experience for all diners. The first time I came I went for the Chinese food- peanut noodles, Schezuan dumplings and beef and boccali. Everything was delicious, but the sizzling duck crepe stands out in my memory. I highly recommend it for duck lovers. I went back recently and had the sushi and ice cream, both of which were great. The house dumplings, vegetable sushi roll, and spider roll were tasty and everyone else at the table loved the phoenix roll. As for dessert, I stand in favor of the Death by Chocolate, a decadent sundae made from chocolate ice cream, with chocolate chips and hot fudge. The Dusty Road sundae, with ice cream, hot fudge and malt powder (which almost tastes like graham crackers are in it) is an excellent choice as well. As hard as it may be, you could share because the servings are very generous. It was nice to eat great sushi in a fun, relaxed place, rather the typically super-trendy-snobby environment. The service was friendly and efficient, too. Definitely recommend it!

Jackson Hole Englewood

Jackson Hole DINER A damn good diner nestled in the outer reaches of Englewood. I have been coming here since I was a kid so what’s not to love? I come for the consistently good breakfast, which will satisfy even the hungriest of diners. I always get omelets, and the rest of my family either gets french toast, pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs, what have you. The white toast is honestly toasted to perfection every time, I don’t know how they do it. The burgers are enormous. They say seven ounces, but their scale must be broken, because my burger felt like a ten ounce steak. You may need to dislocate your jaw if you want to fit that burger in your mouth. Although the burgers rein supreme, the chicken is out of this world. Whether you get it grilled plain, or served up like your favorite burger, you are guaranteed a great meal every time. All in all a great diner in a not too busy area, but make sure you don’t come at peak times, for this tiny diner fills up pretty quick.
