ree and open competition is one of the founding principles upon which Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) was formed more than 60 years ago. It is a realization that competition forces us to be better. In order to win work contractors find ways to increase productivity, improve quality, and minimize cost - all while delivering greater value to the building owner. We see free and open competition playing out in our Excellence in Construction Awards, as well. It was not that long ago that we had an average of 50 projects entered in the competition. The 95 projects entered this year is a high-water mark, and it means that the award is increasingly difficult to win. ABC Western Michigan members embrace competition, and it is an honor for us to identify the best of the best! The Excellence in Construction (EIC) Awards recognize and celebrate outstanding projects built by ABC Western Michigan chapter members. By focusing on the highest quality and innovation in merit shop construction, ABC Western Michigan calls attention to those outstanding projects and continues to raise standards throughout the construction industry. The EIC Awards also raise public awareness of the exceptional work our members perform as we directly impact the structure, design, and look of our communities where we live, work, learn, and play. In addition to the 95 outstanding project entries this year, ABC Western Michigan will present two Safety Awards of Excellence to one trade contractor and one general contractor. The Safety Award of Excellence process includes member surveys of safety performance, job site visits, peer review, and interviews with the entrant’s senior leadership teams. Winners in these two categories will be announced live at the EIC Awards. Safety is one of the highest priorities of ABC Western Michigan member companies, and we’re delighted to recognize the accomplishments of member companies who go above and beyond to keep their teams safe. 2021 is the sixth year that ABC Western Michigan has recognized our remarkable tradespeople through the Craft Professional of the Year award. Craft professionals are the lifeblood of the construction industry, and we continue to recognize the accomplishments of the men and women who have mastery of their crafts and work in the field everyday leaving their fingerprints on the communities in which we serve. My sincere thanks to the many industry leaders who serve on the Excellence in Construction Awards committee, who judge the project entries, who evaluate the Safety Award of Excellence applicants, and who select the Craft Professional of the Year. I am humbled by the service of our 60+ volunteers who work year-round to make the Excellence in Construction Awards happen. Craft professionals are the life blood of the construction industry. They are smart with their hands and minds, and it is because of their hands-on expertise and leadership that ABC/WMC regionalized this award to recognize outstanding leaders in Western Michigan. The sixth annual ABC/WMC Craft Professional of the Year (CPOY) award will be presented at the Excellence in Construction Awards on Thursday, September 16. This award is modeled after the national CPOY award that is given annually at the ABC Convention. The CPOY award sets a high standard for professionals in their craft by exhibiting outstanding skills and leadership. The recipient of this chapter award demonstrates a passion for the trade, taking pride in hands-on work, and the satisfaction of a job well done to benefit both the construction industry and the greater community. The winner is a master of skills whose commitment to excellence makes them the ultimate example of merit shop success in the field. All three finalists will be recognized for their accomplishments during the Excellence in Construction Awards, and the winner of the 2021 ABC/WMC CPOY award will be announced live at the event on September 16.

ABC Western Michigan (ABC/WMC) is proud to recognize member companies who continually strive to maintain world-class safety training programs. In our continued efforts to raise the safety bar among ABC/WMC members, the Safety Award of Excellence application process involved: 1.
ABC/WMC contractor members submitted a one-page entry form including information about the contractor’s safety policies and programs, injury/illness history, and ABC Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) application.

ABC/WMC contractor members were surveyed regarding the safety performance of their peers. General Contractors and Construction Managers were asked to respond to Trade Contractors’ safety performance. Trade Contractors were asked to respond to General Contractor and Construction Managers’ performance.

The Safety Award of Excellence judging panel identified the top three General Contractors and Construction Managers, and the top three Trade Contractors.
4.
The Safety Award of Excellence judging panel conducted on-site interviews with the top six finalists (three General Contractors / Construction Managers and three Trade Contractors) to determine the winner in each category.
The winner in the General Contractor / Construction Manager category and the Trade Contractor category will be announced live at the Excellence in Construction Awards on Thursday, September 16.

The gas is sold to the utility company and used to run electrical generators at the wastewater treatment plant. Allied Mechanical Services brought the required knowledge to offer a superior product to the city.

Kent Companies delivered a turnkey concrete package for Western Michigan University’s Arcadia Flats, an on-campus student housing development. Kent Companies installed the grand staircase, comprehensive site concrete, 1,100+ linear feet of tall walls, 24,000+ SF of slab on grade, and 128,000+ SF of slab on metal deck, over six levels of the structure.

This 124,000 SF, eight-story building located in downtown Grand Rapids was constructed on a footprint of less than 13,400 SF. Westmaas provided electrical services featuring several custom components.

This project consolidated Mercy to one state-of-the-art facility. Mercy boasts 267 inpatient beds, 20 operating rooms, two C-section operating rooms, and an emergency department with 54 patient rooms.
South Christian High School Solar 660 kW Array Windemuller Byron Center April 2021 $500,000 Scot DeYoung Tim Masiewicz N/A South Christian High School wanted to power their school through clean energy while creating an educational energy lab. The result: A 660kW photovoltaic (solar array) system that covers a three-acre site. Windemuller provided a turnkey installation for this renewable energy project.

Western Michigan and AMI have crossed paths before, this being the second time that AMI has worked on a housing project. For the Arcadia Flats project, AMI was responsible for the installation of ACM panels, fabricated in-house as well as Areaway corrugated panels.

The operational facility had many challenges, including design, coordination, and high temperatures at the roof.

The building is protected with 12,000 feet of pipe and 1,400 sprinkler heads fed by a fire pump.

Over four miles of heat detection cable was used throughout the freezer to ensure a double interlock system.

Arcadia Flats is Western Michigan University’s newest dormitory. The 167,986 SF facility has six floors with 197 units. The facility has over 1,600 sprinklers, along with a 1,500 GPM fire pump that supplies a combination standpipe wet system. It also serves a dry system that protects below the bridge.
