SUMMER ROUND-UP TO ADDRESS PRODUCER CHALLENGES

We are barely into the 2019 growing season and it is already shaping up to be one of the more challenging years for agriculture. From tariff wars causing market uncertainty to flooded fields and delaying planting, it is difficult to know what to expect and how to adjust an intended course.

One of the benefits of being involved in the Michigan Cattlemen’s Association is the opportunity to get together with cattle producers from across the state, to discuss the challenges we’re facing and share solutions. These type of discussions happen naturally anytime cattlemen and women gather together, but by attending the 2019 MCA Summer Round-Up and Cattlemen’s Education Series, you’ll be taking a deliberate step to learn more about current management practices, technologies and techniques that can make a difference in the bottom line of your operation.

The Round-Up begins Thursday, June 20th with a program for Young Cattlemen, followed by a meeting and reception at the historic Doherty Hotel. Education Series I will include a field day where participants will learn from the experts about proper fence construction, watering system design, rotational grazing strategies, cattle handling equipment and see a post peeling demonstration. The afternoon program will include lunch and will focus on dealing with predators that threaten cattle and the Michigan cattle industry. Barb Wilkinson, Sr. Executive Director of Governance & Leadership Development, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and Blaine Bailer, an expert on predator control from Jay’s Sporting Goods will lead these sessions.

In addition to wildlife, predators might include things like regulations or lost markets. The afternoon session is an opportunity for every cattle producer in Michigan to influence the direction of our association and the future of our industry in Michigan.

I really hope you will attend and share your thoughts.

A social hour and the MCA awards banquet will be held at the Doherty Hotel. The evening program will include a performance by professional comedian, Dwayne Gill, a Lansing police officer and

former United States Marine. Participants can also win prizes and support the MCA Political Activity Fund through an auction and raffle following the banquet.

Education Series II begins Saturday, June 22 with a tour of Gloryland Ranch and presentations about the economics of grazing irrigated pastures, cow size economic implications and profitable forage management. Series II also includes a tour of Wernette Cattle Company, where cattle backgrounding and soil health management for optimum sustainability will be demonstrated.

Leading the discussions will be Dr. Jason Rowntree, Associate Professor of Animal Science at Michigan State University. See the registration form on the adjoining page or register online at www. micattlemen.org.

MCA FULLY ENGAGED IN TB CHALLENGE Another challenge facing Michigan’s cattle industry is our state’s decades-long struggle with bovine TB. This spring we have seen several newly infected cattle herds and additional surveillance testing due to TB positive deer. Exactly how producers near the infected herds, or elsewhere in the state, will be impacted is unknow at the time of this writing. One thing is certain. MCA is fully engaged on behalf of our members in the TB challenge and we are working at the local, state and national level to urge for aggressive action to address this disease.

BULL EVALUATION AND BEEF EXPO The Michigan Beef Expo and the MCA-MSU Bull Evaluation Committees have each held wrap-up meetings and completed their programs for 2019. Seedstock producers should be thinking about these marketing opportunities. The Bull Evaluation Committee is preparing for 2020 nominations which will be due on September 1. The Michigan Beef Expo will be held April 3-5, 2020. Contact your breed’s committee representative to discuss potential consignments.

STORIES WORTH TELLING

In today’s 24-hour news cycle, speed often takes priority over substance. Cattle producers know this all too well. Over and over again, we have seen complex issues reduced to black-and-white soundbites. Grass-fed is better than grain-fed. Antibiotics should not be used in cattle. The list goes on and on.

One of the most recent examples of this unfortunate trend is focused on President Trump’s trade agenda. It is no secret that the Trump Administration’s efforts to increase market access for American products have led to unjustified retaliation. Instead of lowering trade barriers and respecting global scientific standards, our trading partners have taken aim at American farmers and ranchers.

The complicated dynamics of international trade, and the web of tariff and non-tariff barriers that U.S. beef producers face around the world, would be enough to keep any reporter busy for months. But rather than in-depth analysis, many media outlets have settled on a simple narrative: Farmers and ranchers support President Trump even though retaliatory tariffs are hurting their bottom line.

“Trump’s ‘great patriot’ farmers follow him into a trade war,” read one headline. “As U.S.-China trade war continues, there’s little indication Trump is paying a political price with Midwest farmers,” read another.

The implications of these stories are clear. Farmers are so blindly loyal to President Trump that they will follow him to financial ruin. It is a convenient analysis that probably plays well to urban audiences who do not know where their food comes from.

It also overlooks some critical points.

If the reporters bothered to dig a little deeper, they might uncover that cattle producers’ support for the President’s trade actions are based on sound reasoning, not irrational attachment.

For far too long, U.S. beef has been unfairly targeted by high tariffs and restrictive trade policies. China and the European Union have been among the worst offenders. With exports increasingly important to the profitability of producers in every segment of the supply chain, it is about time someone took aggressive action to try and level the playing field.

Media coverage about the rise of fake meat provides another clear example of a shallow media analysis. A casual observer reading CNN or the New York Times would think that alternative proteins have conquered the hearts and minds of consumers. All of us will soon be cheering a new era of environmental responsibility, served up by the purveyors of plant-based and lab-grown fake meat!

The environmental falsehoods pushed by fake meat activists (and repeated in the press) are too many to list. But environmental issues aside, the media analysis of fake meat is still woefully lacking.

Beef consumption in the U.S. remains at impressive levels.

Americans are projected to eat upwards of 58 pounds of beef on a per capita basis in 2019. Last year, U.S. retail sales of beef reached $105 billion – an all-time record.

By contrast, consumption of meat alternatives is expected to measure just a few ounces per capita in 2019. Last year, fake meat products captured a tiny fraction of the protein market, with a 0.1 percent market share. Chicken is by far beef’s leading competitor and will be for the foreseeable future. These facts are left out of fake meat media stories, but they are important for producers to keep in mind.

None of the above means we can rest on our laurels. NCBA is vigilant about the public perception of cattle and beef. We will continue to fight back against media narratives that harm or disparage our industry. At the same time, we need to stay focused on our long-term strategies. In the court of public opinion, you cannot respond to every media report.

American cattlemen and cattlewomen have an impressive story to tell. We produce the best beef, with the fewest resources, of any country in the world. These qualities are key difference makers for U.S. beef in global markets. Here at home, the hard-earned reputation of delicious, nutritious beef gives us an advantage over every single one of our protein competitors. Our mission now is to focus on what got us here. We will keep delivering superior quality and environmental responsibility for consumers – whether the media wants to cover it or not.

GETTING INVOLVED AND LEARNING ALONG THE WAY

SPRING CLEANING This spring, the MCA Executive Committee began a process of reviewing and updating several important organizational documents for the Michigan Cattlemen’s Association. First among these was the Operating Procedure and Agreement between MCA and the Michigan Beef Industry Commission. That document was finalized in 2000 and established the 2-hat structure of MBIC and MCA working together, managed by one staff. That agreement and structure has served the industry in Michigan well for nearly two decades; however, we cannot deny that the world has changed significantly in 20 years. Likewise, MCA’s Operating Rules, Committee Profiles, and Bylaws have long needed a comprehensive review. The Executive Committee and Board of Directors set the goal of finalizing these document revisions by the end of September. One theme of the review process is creating opportunities for MCA members to get involved in the association. In fact, the Executive Committee has discussed that each MCA program needs to have a Chairperson and an organized committee; if it does not, perhaps that is an activity the organization should discontinue.

SUMMER ROUND-UP: OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL The theme of providing greater opportunities for members was incorporated heavily into Summer Round-Up this year. A Young Cattlemen’s Program will be held on Thursday, June 20th.

This is an opportunity for that group to come together and plan activities and tours they would like to conduct over the next year.

Also planned is an NCBA Young Cattlemen’s Conference Alumni Panel, were members who attended that premier leadership development program will share their experience and insight into how it has benefited them in their careers and businesses.

Education Series I will begin Friday, June 21. In addition to the field-day demos where cattlemen can learn practical, real-life solutions to common farm and ranch challenges, the program includes a session titled “Setting A Course for Michigan’s Cattle Industry.” This session will be facilitated by NCBA’s Sr. Executive Director of Governance & Leadership Development, Barb Wilkinson. This is an information-gathering session and an opportunity for all Round-Up attendees to offer their opinion on what the priorities and focus of the Michigan Cattlemen’s Association should

be. This session is particularly important for planning and future direction of MCA. Before the documents and organizational structure mentioned earlier can be finalized, it is prudent to ask, “what are the critical needs for Michigan’s cattle industry?” and build MCA’s organizational structure from the feedback that is received.

MCA SETS M-AAA RESEARCH PRIORITIES Among the decisions made at the MCA Board of Directors meeting in April was the selection of beef industry production research priorities. The following priorities were submitted to the Michigan Alliance for Animal Agriculture. These priorities will be included in the M-AAA research grant request for proposals for faculty in the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University. Proposals will be reviewed in November for funding in 2020.

Disease Prevention and Control • Bovine TB-Improved prevention methods, improved testing • BRD- Improved detection methods, Improved control protocols, Antibiotic alternatives (i.e. nutritional supplements & biologicals, vaccination protocols) 2. Beef Industry Environmental Sustainability • Maximizing beef’s role in carbon sequestration • Nutrient management- Role of cattle on a sustainable farm • Best practices for water protection and conservation in the beef industry 3. Beef Production Efficiencies • Methods to create value from MI’s traceability program • Methods to improve cow’s energetic efficiency and relationship to cow size • Utilization of cover crops as feed resources 4. Industry Outreach • Creation of or improvements to online resources available to the industry including increased collaborations with outside sources (i.e. other land grants) • Establish annual outreach programs (annual educational series, webinars, etc.)

31ST MCA/MSU BULL EVALUATION DELIVERS PERFORMANCE AND VALUE Bulls graduating from the 31st Annual MCA-MSU Bull Evaluation Program were sold Saturday, March 16 in Crystal, Mich. The sale averaged $3,386 on 58 lots.

Lot #34; DF Discovery F245, a purebred Angus bull sired by VAR Discovery 2240 and consigned by Dawson Farms, LLC of Hanover, Mich. topped the sale at $6,750. Breed results were as follows: 33 Angus bulls averaged $3,371; 18 Simmental bulls averaged $3,586; six Red Angus bulls averaged $3,000 and one Charolais bull sold for $2,600. The next evaluation will begin in October, with nominations accepted until September 1, 2019.

Cattlemen Host Successful Michigan Beef Expo

igh quality cattle, friendly competition and rapid bidding made the 30th Annual Michigan Beef Expo a success for Michigan’s cattle industry. As the state’s largest cattle industry event, the Michigan Beef Expo included seedstock shows and sales for the Angus, Hereford, Chianina, Maine-Anjou, Shorthorn, Simmental and all other registered breeds (AORB’s). A trade show with over 45 vendors featured a wide variety of cattle industry equipment, services and supplies. The MSU Block & Bridle Club hosted a youth judging competition on Friday night along with the MSU judging team and a Junior Steer and Heifer show on Sunday. MI Shows sponsored a youth education contest for 50 individuals to compete with an essay, photograph, graphic design, stockman contest and salesmanship contests.

Breeders consigned 136 Lots, including bulls, females, embryos and semen from breeders in Michigan, Indiana, Kansas, Wisconsin and Ohio. The 2019 Supreme Champion Female is Simmental Lot 418, JDCC Loaded Up 44E, a Simmental heifer consigned by DeLong Cattle Company in Cass City, MI. She was the Michigan

The high selling bull was Hereford Lot 312, PSC What A Catch 302F, consigned by Parks Show Cattle of Metamora, MI and purchased by John Roorda for $4,000. Total consignments at the Michigan Beef Expo grossed $224,295. The bulls averaged $2,287 on 30 lots and 70 females averaged $2,399. Embryo lots averaged $301, and semen lots averaged $122.

The 2020 Michigan Beef Expo is scheduled for April 3-5, 2020.

The Michigan Beef Expo is hosted annually by the Michigan Cattlemen’s Association and affiliated breed associations at the MSU Pavilion in East Lansing. The Expo unites various breeds and provides an opportunity to share in a statewide promotional event that showcases Michigan’s beef industry through shows and sales, displays of seedstock cattle, and youth educational competitions.

SALAMANDERS WILL NO LONGER BE PART OF THE BEEF SUPPLY CHAIN Survival May be Increasingly Difficult for Some

by Dan Buskirk, MSUE Beef Extension Specialist More than 650 species of salamanders are distributed throughout the world, with about 150 species native to the U.S. These secretive amphibians are so to themselves, that most people never encounter them. Some remain hidden underground most of their lives and only emerge when critically necessary for their livelihood.

In my Extension work, I have encountered a reluctant and sometimes reclusive breed of beef producer that shares numerous characteristics with the salamander. They are solitary creatures that wish not to be disturbed. Most often, they are not part of any cattle-related groups or networks. The most common variety will duck, dodge, and completely evade involvement with regional, state, or national cattlemen’s organizations.

The challenge is this – the environment of the beef supply chain is changing. The flow of product and information that flows with it is becoming more coordinated. This is not a reference to vertical integration like some other animal industries. Retail, food service, and consequently processors, are upping their ideals of information exchange, transparency, as well as, product safety and quality. This change in the beef industry has been rather slow in coming, but I believe now will accelerate. As you might imagine, this is not a conducive environment for the salamander-like beef producer. It will likely become a greater struggle for them to compete in the marketplace. They will find it more difficult to

keep track of changes that affect markets for their cattle and their livelihood. They will get tripped-up by lapses in communication, because their information sources will be either sluggish, unreliable, or both.

I have recently observed several salamander-like beef producers. Some were coaxed out of hiding when they realized that marketing cattle for full value may require Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certification. Several contacted me after being prompted at a livestock auction. Of course, these were not familiar names or voices on the other end of my phone. They asked me about “the requirement”, and what they needed to do to get certified in this “new program”. I had to bite my lip when I conveyed that the BQA program was launched more than 35 years ago and has by no means been a secret.

My point is this — the industry is rapidly changing. Beef producers will find it increasingly difficult to stay up-to-date with changing trends, best management practices, technologies, requirements, you name it, unless they are in touch. That is, communicating with their beef producing peers, maintaining a veterinarian client patient relationship (VCPR), networking with allied industry, interacting with their Extension service, and engaging with their state and national cattlemen’s associations. If producers become active participants in the beef community, they will automatically shed their salamander-like characteristics of merely lurking. They could become informed, take part, and add tremendous value to the industry.

Just think of the enhanced strength of beef supporting organizations that is conceivable with greater involvement. For example, the recently released 2017 Census of Agriculture reports there are 882,692 cattle operations in the U.S., yet only about 3 in 100 operations are members of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. What if 1, or 2, or even 3 in 10 helped carry the water? What if state cattlemen’s organizations could rely on double or triple their current membership? What would happen to industry initiatives, research innovations, lobbying efforts, and product promotion? You get the picture. Everyone in the industry would benefit.

Of course the irony of this article is that the intended audience will likely not read it first-hand. So, I urge you to be a beef industry advocate and pass this article or message on to someone who needs to become involved. Describe to them the benefits that could be enjoyed with more unity. If everyone reading this convinced just one of their neighbors to join in, what an impact that would have.

The agency originally proposed transferring management of gray wolf populations to states in April, setting a May 14 deadline for comments. The 60-day extension means producers will have until July 15 to make their voice heard.

NCBA and the Public Lands Council (PLC) have been focused on building support for delisting of the gray wolf in Washington, D.C. However, lawmakers and regulators need to hear from impacted producers to help get the delisting of the gray wolf across the finish line.

“With populations exploding nationwide, the Department of Interior is well-positioned to remove federal protections for the species,” said NCBA President Jennifer Houston. “As livestock producers, we have a role to play. We need to engage by commenting and ensure activist do not derail the delisting process with scientifically unsupported claims.”

Since being listed as an endangered species in 1974, the gray wolf has exceeded recovery goals by more than 300 percent and has bipartisan support for a delisting. In 2013, the USFWS proposed removing the wolves’ endangered status, and were met with threats by environmental groups to take the rule to federal court. This most recent proposal finishes the work of the Obama Administration.

“Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington have demonstrated that states have the means to responsibly manage stable wolf populations,” said PLC President Bob Skinner. “There is no longer a need to take valuable resources from other critical species that need protection, and it is essential we comment in support of Fish and Wildlife Service’s proposed rule to return management of the gray wolf to the states.”

FEATURE: BEEF TRADE WITH JAPAN AND USMCA

GREAT NEWS ON THE TRADE FRONT Producers in every segment of the beef supply chain understand that trade is vital to their bottom lines. Global demand for U.S. beef helps increase opportunities for American cattlemen by vastly expanding the customer base. With over 95 percent of the world’s customers residing outside of U.S. borders, it is no wonder NCBA members have designated it a priority year after year.

The Trump Administration has taken aggressive steps to increase market access for U.S. beef around the world. Just last month, two major items on the trade agenda took a step forward.

The first relates to the largest export market for U.S. beef: Japan. In 2018, exports to Japan topped $2 billion. Those sales look set to grow following the announcement from the the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that Japan will allow products from U.S. cattle of all ages to be imported into that country for the first time since 2003.

“This is great news for American cattle producers, and Secretary Sonny Perdue and the Trump Administration deserve a lot of credit for helping knock down this non-tariff trade barrier in Japan,” said NCBA President Jennifer Houston. “This underscores the safety of the U.S. beef herd, and it will hopefully send a signal to other Asian nations that non-science-based trade barriers like

this one should be eliminated in their countries, as well.”

Closer to home, the Trump Administration is working with Congress to ratify the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the new trade pact designed to cover North America. NCBA supports the agreement because it keeps the highly-successful framework for beef trade in place. But even though the deal was agreed to last year, Congress must pass legislation implementing the agreement before it can take effect.

One potential roadblock to winning approval in Congress were the U.S. tariffs placed on Mexican and Canadian steel and aluminum products. As of May 17, those tariffs are gone – and USMCA has a clear path forward. “NCBA is grateful to President Trump for working with Canada and Mexico to resolve the steel and aluminum tariff situation,” said Senior Vice President, Government Affairs, Colin Woodall. “Removing this trade barrier opens the door for Congress to ratify the USMCA. NCBA strongly supports the USMCA, and now is the time for Congress to work with President Trump to ratify the USMCA as soon as possible. We cannot afford to delay action on this monumental agreement.”

BEEF STRIP STEAKS WITH BALSAMIC GRILLED VEGETABLES Total Recipe Time: 40 minutes Makes 4 servings

INSTRUCTIONS

INGREDIENTS

2. Press 1 teaspoon garlic-pepper seasoning evenly onto beef Strip Steaks.

1. 2 beef Strip Steaks boneless, cut 1 inch thick (about 8 ounces each)

3. Soak two 10-inch bamboo skewers in water 10 minutes; drain. Thread onion wedges onto skewers. Brush onions and cut sides of squash with oil; sprinkle with remaining 1 teaspoon garlic-pepper seasoning.

2. 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

4. Place steaks on grid over medium, ash-covered coals; arrange vegetables around steaks. Grill steaks, covered, 11 to 14 minutes (over medium heat on preheated gas grill, 11 to 15 minutes) for medium rare (145°F) to medium doneness (160°F), turning occasionally. Grill squash 8 to 12 minutes (7 to 11 minutes for gas) and onions 12 to 15 minutes (13 to 16 minutes for gas) or until tender, turning occasionally.

1. Bring vinegar to a boil in small saucepan. Reduce heat; simmer about 3 minutes or until reduced by half. Set aside.

5. Remove onions from skewers; toss with reduced vinegar, oregano and salt, as desired. Carve steaks into slices. Serve with onion mixture and squash; season steak and squash with salt, as desired.

MICHIGAN’S LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY SUPPORTS FUTURE LEADERS Eleven outstanding Michigan State University (MSU) students pursuing livestock industry-related programs of study for the 2019-20 academic year were recently awarded $33,000 in scholarships by the Michigan Livestock Industry Scholarship Foundation (MLISF). Foundation President Pete Blauwiekel said, “simply getting good grades is not enough to be recognized with one of these scholarships”. In addition to academic achievement, the scholarship’s criteria include extracurricular leadership and involvement, written and oral communication skills, and enthusiasm in pursuing a livestock (beef cattle, sheep, swine, meat products, or equine) industry career. “Those individuals selected for this honor have a clear passion and demonstrated involvement in the animal industry and a commitment to its future improvement in Michigan”, said Blauwiekel.
