One of the great California coastal cities, San Diego, has plenty to offer the traveler who is on a budget. From cultural events, beaches, music and more, San Diego has some unique free events. Here is a list of seven unique and must attend free events in San Diego during the winter season.

Port of San Diego Bay Parade of Lights San Diego Bay will come alive with holiday cheer as over eighty boats will dawn festive lights for all to see. Running for just two consecutive Sundays in Dec, the 13th, and 20th, each year yachts, and boats reflect the given theme of the holiday season. The parade begins at 5:30 pm.


Whale Watch From the months of December to April, the California Grey Whale migrates southward. Best free advantage points include Point Luma, Birch Aquarium at Scripps and Torrey Pines State Reserve.


Beaches Life is a Beach, and San Diego has over seventy miles of sandy shores. To catch the sea lions one has to go to Boomer Beach. For fun family La, Jolla Shores has various free activities. All beaches share an amazing western view of the daily sun setting.


Las Posadas Dating back to the 1950's, this annual procession of music and splendor is the reenactment of the birth of Jesus. Located in Old Town San Diego, the event is steeped in tradition. With songs sung in Spanish and English, the event begins at 4:45 on Sunday, Dec. 13th.


Organ Winter Concerts Free Sunday afternoon concerts are given at Balboa Park on the 100year-old Spreckels grand organ. Lead by civic organist Carol Williams, a special New Years Day performance will be given Friday at 2 pm. The organ is the second largest one of its kinds in the world.


Mt. Soledad From the veterans memorial to panoramic views, Mt. Soledad is a destination must. Walls of black granite plaques honor those who have served in the military as breathtaking views create a visual and emotional experience one won't soon forget.


Balboa Park - December Nights As mentioned before, Balboa Park is a multiple destination site. Here are s few winter events for you to explore and enjoy. Events include December Nights, Sugar Winter Workshop, Mexican Holiday Gift, Civic Dance Arts and the Hitchcock Puppet Theater performance of "A Christmas Carol."


Neighborhood Holiday Lights Truly a citywide phenomenon, the viewing of Holiday Lights is a wonderful family experience. Here are a few must see locations. The Forward House in Bankers Hill in Downtown San Diego, the "Sights, and Sounds of Christmas" on the grounds of the San Diego Temple and the multimedia light show at the Hotel del Coronado in the South Bay.
