Site Location
Site History The building was built in an art deco style as a centralised repair, maintaince and storage site for the Hin Bus Company. It was a depot for the “blue buses” known as Hin Bus that used to ply the Tanjung Bungah and Teluk Bahang routes. The origin of Hin Bus Depot goes back to 1947, when the depot was built to house and maintain Hin Company Ltd’s blue motorbuses. The blue motorbuses were an integral part of the colonial government’s efforts to restore George Town in the aftermath of World War II.

The bus companies were fragmented and disorganised, eventually facing financial difficulties leading to their closure.

TIt opened its doors with the first exhibition Art is Rubbish is Art in 2014 and this set the depot on a creative path. According to Tan Shih Thoe, who was appointed by the three families to take charge and manage the whole place, they did not have any concrete plans on what they wanted to do with the rest of the space after part of it became an art exhibition gallery. “It grew organically over the years and we find ourselves a hub for the arts and crafts, food and urban farms,” he said. The owners have since expanded the space by acquiring shophouses next to the depot. Today, Hin Bus Depot spreads out over 60,000 sq feet and includes eight shophouses on Jalan Gurdwara.

Project One Pop-Up Furniture furniture : a piece can be described as an extension of architecture, creating a direct connection between structure and inhabitants, accommodating physical needs and dwelling comfortably in the site.

Model Making Process
Derive from Rumah Kacha which is a Malay vernacular architecture, I extract some elements such as ventilation triangular roof, raised level, long rammed bridge. At initial stages, all the pop-up furniture are looking too bulky and massive. After experiment by making physical models, I discovered that an upside down triangle able to create a more elegant, slimmer and elongated pop-up structure. The final outcome is using timber construction and interlocking system joinery. Physical Model 5

Site Montage
In this site montage, the pop-up furniture is placed next to the client’s restaurant for convenient access to kitchen. Overall, it creates a contemporary local-western atmosphere selling local taste pizza and provides the customers to enjoy seeing the process of making pizza as well as ancillary place for chit-chatting.
Top View Plan
From the top view plan, customers at first step onto the rammed bridge and start order their flavoured pizza, follows up with seeing the whole entire process of pizza making and take out the pizza using shovel together with the chef. Then, they can have a seat after walking down.
Counter Details
Obviouly, it can be seen that there are 3 processes occur in one-stop. Firstly, customers can see pizza menus through electrical gadget provided and make payment by scanning QR codes. Next, customers can enjoy looking the pizza making process. The ingredients and spices are put inside the “congkak”- a traditional Malay mancala game. Lastly, customers can take out pizza together with chef and pick-up in simultaneously. The table top and pizza stove surface are made of mosaic that combine artworks in Hin Bus Depot.
