MAJOR CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS SET TO BEGIN IN JUNE
This June, Miami Shores Village will break ground on two major infrastructure projects aimed at improving long-term resilience and quality of life for residents.
BAYFRONT PARK SEAWALL ELEVATION
Construction will begin on a new, elevated seawall along Bayfront Park to reduce the risk of coastal flooding and storm surge. The existing seawall is aging, low-lying, and showing signs of erosion that have compromised its structural integrity. Miami Shores Village is upgrading the seawall at Bayfront Park with innovation, sustainability, and resilience in mind. The new seawall will be raised by two feet to better withstand future sea level rise.
SHORES ESTATES SEPTICTOSEWER CONVERSION
Also launching in June is the first of the residential septic-to-sewer conversion project in Miami Shores Village. This long-awaited upgrade will connect 100 properties in Shores Estates mostly operating with aging septic system to a brand new sanitary sewer gravity system, reducing environmental impacts and improving wastewater management in one of the Village’s most flood-prone neighborhoods. Construction will include the installation of new sewer mains and service laterals, as well as roadway restoration. Work will be carefully staged to maintain access for residents and minimize disruptions where possible. Both projects are being closely managed by the Village Public Works Department and their engineering partners. Updates, construction notices, and project timelines will be posted on the Village website and shared social media.
Please contact the Public Works Department if you have any questions about these or any other projects in the works at 305-795-2210 or check out the ongoing projects on our website at www.msvfl.gov.
HURRICANE SEASON STARTS
JUNE 1ST
MAYOR INSTALLED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
On May 8, 2025, Mayor Jerome Charles was officially installed to the Miami-Dade County League of Cities Board of Directors. This prestigious appointment recognizes Mayor Charles’s ongoing commitment to public service, community advocacy, and regional collaboration. The Miami-Dade County League of Cities is a coalition that brings together elected officials from across the county to address shared concerns, promote effective governance, and advocate for policies that benefit all municipalities. Under Mayor Charles’ leadership, vision, and dedication, may he continue to elevate our Village’s voice in broader countywide initiatives. Congratulations to Mayor Charles on his new appointment and we look forward to the positive impact he will make in this new role.
PREPARE NOW
Hurricane season spans from June 1 to November 30. Miami Shores Village remains committed to proactively mitigating the impact of storms and other disasters within our community. The optimal time for preparation is prior to the onset of hurricane season. Avoid the urgency of last-minute preparations by planning ahead. Don't risk being unprepared in the days leading up to a hurricane, facing lengthy queues at stores for supplies. Ensure you have a minimum of three days’ worth of food, water, and essentials for each household member. Prior to the commencement of storm season, review your insurance coverage, trim trees surrounding your residence, and establish an evacuation strategy, including provisions for your pets. Stay well informed by knowing where to access accurate real-time information before, during, and after the storm. Remember, effective preparation isn't a last-minute endeavor—it's a continual practice integrated into your daily routine to prevent being caught off guard.
VILLAGE HALL NEWS
CELEBRATING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: CITIZENS ACADEMY RECOGNITION
At the May 20, 2025 Miami Shores Village Council meeting, participants of the Citizen’s Academy were presented with certificates of participation for completing the 8-week citizen’s engagement program sponsored by Councilmember Jesse Valinsky. The Citizens Academy was designed to offer residents a deeper look into the operations, responsibilities, and challenges of our municipal departments—from public safety and public works to administration, parks, finance, and beyond. The Academy makes a meaningful difference in fostering open dialogue and stronger connections between our residents and Village leadership. In every class, the dedication and genuine interest of our residents in understanding how our local government works was astounding. The intent of the program was not only to provide insight into the inner workings of Miami Shores Village, but also to encourage a continued spirit of collaboration and community stewardship. It is through programs like this—and residents like you—that we build a more informed, involved, and inspired community.
COMMUNITY VOICES: STORMWATER MASTER PLAN
On May 8, 2025, residents were invited to the Village’s first public meeting for the Stormwater Masterplan (SWMP). Hosted by Public Works Department and consultant Kimley-Horn, the meeting provided an overview of the SWMP process, including recent fieldwork, key findings from the data collection phase, and next steps such as identifying critical areas in need of drainage and construction improvements. The team also focused on current flooding concerns, and residents had the opportunity to share personal experiences and ask questions about potential solutions. Resident feedback plays an important role in how the consultant gathers data and how future capital projects are prioritized. The Village is planning additional meetings later this summer to present initial findings and proposed improvements. This planning effort is part of a long-term strategy to reduce flooding, improve infrastructure, and build a more resilient Miami Shores.

40 YEARS OF SUMMER READING FUN
This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Library’s Annual Summer Reading Program. Begun by Brockway’s former Children’s Librarian of 32 years, Anne Kelly, the offering has reached hundreds of kids throughout the decades. With its initial 1985 theme of Footloose in Florida, each year has provided 8 weeks of non-stop summer fun and learning! When asked which was her favorite summer memory, Ms. Kelly says she loved the theme, Reading is Out of this World with Yrarbil (Library spelled backwards!) the alien puppet.
This year, Ms. Brenda Holsing, continues the tradition with the theme, Color My World, a celebration of books and the creative arts. Look for program dates and be sure to register! Registration opens June 2nd. As Ms. Kelly said in a 1995 interview with The Miami Herald, “This is a great way to spend the summer. The kids really look forward to coming…and you can make a difference to them, just by being here!”

Brockway Memorial Library unveils its NEW Children's Listening Center, now part of the Kids' Media Center, located in the Children’s Wing. This special space lets children enjoy listening to books on CD using a CD player, a classic throwback that’s capturing attention, and VOX Books, the modern-day version of a read-along book! Even middle schoolers are fascinated by this “old-school” device, purchased with funds earned from the Library’s Scholastic Book Fair. Did you know that audiobooks can improve your child’s vocabulary, comprehension, and ability to process information?
Audiobooks enhance their cognitive skills too, improving the way kids think—and ultimately how they learn. To follow along with an audiobook, they must also put in extra effort to focus on what’s being said. This can sharpen their auditory listening skills, which over time can boost their memory by helping them retain up to 75% of the information they hear.

MIAMI DADE COUNTY FERTILZER BAN
Miami-Dade County's annual fertilizer ban is in effect from May 15 through October 31, 2025, aiming to protect local waterways during the rainy season. This ordinance prohibits the use of fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus, as heavy rains can wash these nutrients into storm drains and water bodies, leading to harmful algal blooms and fish kills. The ban applies to all residents, businesses, and landscaping professionals. Even fertilizers labeled as "slow-release" or "organic" are not exempt if they contain nitrogen or phosphorus. The goal is to reduce nutrient runoff into Biscayne Bay and other sensitive ecosystems, which have experienced significant environmental stress in recent years.
Outside the blackout period, from November 1 to May 14, fertilizer use is permitted under strict guidelines: phosphorus is banned unless a soil test confirms a deficiency, and nitrogen-based fertilizers must contain at least 65% slow-release nitrogen. Additionally, fertilizers should not be applied within 20 feet of any water body or storm drain. For more information on the fertilizer ordinance, visit Miami-Dade County's official website.

HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF MIAMI SHORES!
On Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, Miami Shores Village hosted a vibrant community workshop led by the Planning and Zoning Department. The focus? The evening featured a detailed presentation from Village staff, interactive community surveys, and open discussions on key zoning topics like setbacks, accessory structures, landscaping, and more. Over 30 neighbors attended, sharing thoughtful feedback and fresh ideas about how we can preserve the unique charm of our neighborhoods while planning for a future that works for everyone.

We hope this message finds you well and as you enjoy the peaceful charm of our community. As part of our continued effort to keep Miami Shores Village safe, serene, and friendly, we’d like to remind everyone of some important local ordinances that help maintain the quality of life we all value so much.
Let's Keep It Down: Noise Control Reminders (Chapter 15, Article IV). Sec. 15-104 – Sec. 6-8 – Miami Shores is a vibrant place, but peace and quiet are a big part of what makes it special. Please be mindful of your neighbors. Any sound that’s too loud, intense, or long-lasting and disturbs the peace is not allowed.
Work involving construction equipment is restricted to the following hours: Weekdays: 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. | Saturdays: 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
No construction noise is allowed on Sundays or holidays as defined in Section 15-102. Emergency work is exempt, as detailed in Section 15-102. Contractors and property owners, please remember: all construction sites must follow the noise regulations outlined above in the Miami Shores Village Noise Control Ordinance. If you're thinking of making improvements to your home or property, please remember that a permit is required for all projects over $100.
Thank you for doing your part to make Miami Shores Village a wonderful place to live! If you have any questions about permits please reach out to the Building Department. For any questions or concerns relating to noise regulations please reach out to (us) Neighborhood Services at NeighborhoodServices@msvfl.gov, or visit our village website https://www.msvfl.gov/NeighborhoodServices for more information.
