From the Artistic Director
by Ashley Goos“Connection is why we’re here. It’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives. This is what it’s all about. What [researchers] know is that connection, the ability to feel connected, is neurobiologically wired into us; it’s why we’re here.”
Brene Brown, “The Power of Vulnerability”
We just spent a long, scary time in a state of disconnect: Disconnected from each other and the people, things, and experiences we love, maybe even disconnected from ourselves. So we made a dance concert in hopes to connect. To connect you, to connect to each other, and to connect to ourselves again.
During this performance you’ll see dance and movement in all genres and styles. You’ll see faculty choreographed work, guest artist choreographed work (by the amazing Jasmine Snellen of Mutual Dance Theatre in Cincinnati), and 11 works by student choreographers. You’ll see dancers representing every college on Miami’s campus; First Years through Seniors, dance minors and non dance minors alike. You’ll hear music made by professional composers, and a student composer (you’ll see that piece of music 4 different ways as our solo choreographers worked through the exercise of interpreting the same music). You’ll see costume, lighting, scenic, and prop elements designed and executed by faculty, staff, and student designers.
But what I hope you see through all that artistry, though all that talent, through all that dedication and time, is connection. I hope you connect to what you see in any way that you need right now. We made this for all of us to experience together, so welcome back to connecting. Welcome back to moving. Welcome back to yourself.
To my students and collaborators: Thank you for your trust, and for giving of yourselves without hesitation. Thank you for throwing yourselves headlong into something brand new. I am so proud of you. (I’m not crying, you’re crying.)
