I was seeking inspiration for this issue, which is dedicated to Father’s Day. Inspiration found me recently while at the grocery store. As I went down each aisle, I kept seeing a man with his small, young daughter—she looked to be about three years old.

It was evident that she was already an expert at getting her way. In the produce section, she informed him that she was an expert in selecting the best apples, and told him not to put broccoli in the cart. He complied. In the deli section, she suggested they buy a cooked chicken for dinner so her mommy wouldn’t have to cook that night. He told her it was a great idea and added it to the cart.

Then during checkout, she grabbed a couple of candy bars, saying that one was for him and one for her to enjoy after supper. He just winked. I couldn’t resist speaking to him, to compliment his patience and to say how adorable I thought she was. He smiled and said that he discovered life is much easier and happier whenever he just goes along with whatever she and her mom suggest. I thought: He is a brilliant man!

This Father’s Day, please acknowledge all fathers who are actively participating in raising their children. Being the main income source is important, but the hands-on, day-to-day involvement is what helps develop well-rounded future adults.

I get so annoyed when I hear a man say, “I’m helping my wife,” when he changes a diaper, goes to the store, drives the carpool, gives a bath, helps with homework, or folds laundry. If a poll were taken with 100 women, all 100 would agree: it’s their equal job as a parent.

Men are, in some ways, like children. It’s important not to complain or criticize, but to compliment positive behavior whenever possible. Doing so almost guarantees they’ll do it again—the desired outcome!

Wishing a very Happy Father’s Day to all our special dads!

As summer temperatures rise, staying hydrated is more important than ever, especially for children and teens. Top health and nutrition experts have released new beverage recommendations to support the overall health and well-being of kids ages 5 to 18, and the message is clear: water is the best choice.

According to leading organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Heart Association, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, plain water and plain pasteurized milk should be the primary drinks for children. These evidence-based guidelines, developed under the leadership of Healthy Eating Research (HER), stress the importance of limiting beverages such as and 100% fruit juice—and completely avoiding sugary drinks, those with non-sugar sweeteners, and caffeine.

“Research shows that what kids and teens drink is just as important as what they eat,” said Megan Elsener Lott, MPH, RDN, deputy director of HER. “With so many drink options

on the market, it can be confusing for families. These recommendations are designed to help families make healthy, informed choices.”

Drinks like soda, sports drinks, and energy drinks often contain added sugars and caffeine, which can contribute to serious health issues such as tooth decay, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and even heart disease. New

sweeteners may not aid in weight control as once believed and may pose risks of chronic illnesses.

Caffeine, commonly found in energy drinks and coffee beverages, is especially harmful for children and teens. Experts warn that there is no safe level of caffeine for individuals under 18, as it can disrupt sleep, raise blood pressure, and increase anxiety.

This summer, families are encouraged to offer water as the go-to drink for hydration— especially during outdoor activities and high temperatures. “Choosing healthy beverages for children is just as important as choosing healthy foods,” said Amy Reed, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Water supports a healthy body, energy levels, and even oral health.” So, as you enjoy sunny days ahead, keep

water the drink of choice for a fun, safe, and healthy summer.

With summer in full swing, kids are soaking up the sunshine, enjoying outdoor adventures, and making the most of their break. But before the hustle of back-toschool season begins, it’s the perfect time for parents to get ahead on important health check-ins, including their child’s vision.

As parents, grandparents, and caregivers, ensuring our children have every opportunity to thrive is a top priority. From excelling in school to enjoying sports and playtime with friends, clear vision plays a critical role in a

What Parents Need to Know About Myopia

Designed for comfort, Abiliti® Overnight lenses offer an effective solution for managing myopia in children of all ages.1,11 These FDAapproved lenses are worn at night, working while your child sleeps to gently reshape the cornea - part of the front surface of the eye - so they can wake up to clear, glasses-free vision every morning.*1

“Abiliti® Overnight Contact Lenses offer a safe and convenient solution for children who want clear vision all day long—without the hassle of glasses or daytime contacts.*1

Worn while they sleep, these specially designed lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye to temporarily correct myopia (nearsightedness), so kids wake up with clear vision and the freedom to fully enjoy their day.11 They’re FDA-approved, easy to care for, and supported by your eye care professional every step of the way,” says Dr. Gabriela Olivares, OD, an optometrist in Pembroke Pines, FL who specializes in ocular disease and myopia management.

No more worrying about broken glasses or lost contact lenses during school, sports or play.

Clear, glasses-free vision can boost self-esteem, and patients wearing Abiliti® Overnight lenses report performance in school and activities like sports, compared to children wearing glasses.

and compliance. Parents can easily monitor their child’s lens wear and ensure they are following the recommended usage guidelines. With Abiliti® Overnight lenses, parents can take an active role in managing their child’s myopia and allowing them to be free to be kids.

Summer is the perfect time to set your child up for success, both in and out of the classroom. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam with your eye care provider and ask about Abiliti® Overnight lenses. Should we be worried about how technology affects our children?

Technology in early childhood can be a that bad for them?

The American Psychological Association (APA) recommends limiting screen time to one hour per day for children ages 2 to 5 and emphasizes the importance of monitoring the content they consume.

While it’s true that technology can have negative effects, such as cyberbullying, attention problems, and increased aggression, should we also take a moment

and use it constructively in early childhood education.

The way young children learn today has evolved, and technology is now an integral part of that learning process. As technology continues to advance rapidly, we could

Support for children with disabilities through assistive technology, enabling more effective learning and communication. We should not be afraid of incorporating technology into our children’s lives. College costs increase exponentially every year, creating a burden on both the student and the parent. Estimates show that by 2030 the average tuition could double the current rates.

By planning ahead and creating a life insurance strategy that gives you the option to save for college can give you and your child peace of mind. An insurance policy with Las Madrinas de Los Seguros with a tax-free cash value component can be used towards educational expenses.

Some prepaid plans in the market don’t offer a high value return such as the one offered by Life Insurance, that’s why it’s important to start the policy when the child is in his early years, allowing the policy to yield a higher return.

You may have many more questions such as “what happens if my child does not want to go to college?” or “what other uses does the accumulated value have?” and more importantly, “how can I get this College Funding plan?”

We have all the answers, contact us now to learn more.

For many families, choosing the right private school can feel like navigating a maze of deadlines, applications, and decisions. Whether you’re new parents or preparing your child for middle school, planning ahead is essential. To help guide you through the process, we sat down with longtime Miami educator Josh D’Alemberte—better known as Mr. D—who has worked with families for over 30 years through his tutoring and admissions consulting company, Who Tutors.

Dear Mr. D,

should we start thinking about applying to private schools?

– Anxious in Coral Gables

Dear Anxious,

Believe it or not, it’s never too early to begin doing your research. Start talking to other parents now and ask questions like: “When

did their child start school?”, “What did they like or dislike about the school?”, and “What is the school’s philosophy or focus?”

With Miami’s population growth, demand for top-tier private schools has increased

as Pre-K3 or Pre-K4, and applying early can secure your child’s place. In my 15 years of consulting, I’ve met many families who applied too late—but never one who regretted applying early.

Dear Mr. D,

My wife and I toured one school and knew

know when we’ve found the right one?

– Curious in Key Biscayne

Dear Curious,

Trust your instincts. That said, it’s wise to visit and apply to several schools. Don’t rely solely on websites—go visit the campus. Observe how you’re treated and whether the school’s

energy matches your family’s values. Ask for a meeting with the admissions director to get a clearer sense of the school’s mission and priorities. A school should feel like a natural extension of your home and parenting style. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

Dear Mr. D, SSAT, ISEE, HSPT—it all sounds like alphabet soup! Our daughter is in fourth grade. Does she need to start prepping now for middle school?

– Confused in Coconut Grove

These acronyms represent standardized admissions tests required by many private schools. The HSPT is common among Catholic schools; the ISEE is used by schools like Carrollton and Ransom Everglades; and the SSAT is widely accepted and also required by many boarding schools. Each has unique formats and sections, so preparation is key. Starting in the second half of fourth grade gives your child plenty and master the material before testing begins in schools, sixth grade is the most accessible entry point—waiting until ninth grade can limit your options due to fewer openings.

If you still have questions about admissions or want personalized guidance for your child’s private school journey, you’re welcome to reach out to Mr. D directly at (786) 309-3966 or email him at WhoTutors@gmail.com.

At Miami Kids Magazine, we pride ourselves on being a truly inclusive publication— one that embraces and uplifts all families, including those raising children with special needs. Our mission is to highlight people and programs making a real difference in the lives of children across South Florida.

That’s why we’re honored to feature James Haj, CEO of The Children’s Trust, an organization transforming child development and family support in Miami-Dade County. From early education to drowning prevention and support for children with disabilities, The Children’s Trust is a lifeline for thousands of families.

As we celebrate Father’s Day this month, we asked Mr. Haj to share how fatherhood has shaped his life and leadership—and how The Children’s Trust continues to impact families every day.

The Children’s Trust has become a cornerstone in made the most impact recently?

We’re proud of our role in expanding access to quality early learning centers and promoting early literacy through our Book Club, which mails free books monthly

of our most impactful initiatives is Zero Drownings Miami-Dade, launched with key partners to combat the leading cause of accidental death for kids ages 1–14 in our county. Since launching, over 2,500 children and 3,000 parents have received life-saving water safety education. Our goal is to reach 20,000 children annually with these lessons.

How does The Children’s Trust support parents and strengthen

We believe investing in parents is investing in children. That’s why we created the Parent Club, which offers free parenting workshops in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole—online or in person. Topics range from dealing with toddler tantrums to navigating teen tech use. We’re also launching the Parent Club Pass, where families can earn rewards for participating in workshops—making learning engaging and rewarding.

Children’s Trust?

As a father and former principal, I understand how essential it is to provide safe, nurturing spaces for children. Fatherhood has deepened my commitment to ensuring every child in our community can thrive. This Father’s Day, I’ll be spending time with my family, honoring my that guide both my life and leadership.

In today’s world, children are exposed to mature topics earlier than ever before, including alcohol. That’s why experts like Meri Shadley, Ph.D., recommend starting conversations about alcohol before middle school. Kids in middle school face increased peer pressure and are beginning to form their own values. Early conversations help prepare them for decisions they’ll soon be making.

“Alcohol is a social norm in our culture,” says Dr. Shadley. “The earlier we help the better prepared they’ll be.”

When speaking with tweens and early teens (ages 11–14), Dr. Shadley encourages parents to start by asking what their children already know. Many kids learn about alcohol in school by 4th or 5th grade and may surprise you with their knowledge. From there, she suggests asking open-ended questions like:

• Why do you think adults make such a

big deal about kids drinking?

• Do you know why alcohol is considered a drug?

• What do you think drinking might feel or taste like?

Parental behavior plays a huge role in shaping a child’s relationship with alcohol. Kids watch closely. If a parent drinks regularly, it’s important to vary behavior and explain choices, like why you’re skipping alcohol for a while (try Sober January!). Most importantly, be honest if your child asks about your drinking. Admitting mistakes and discussing choices models responsibility and openness.

Creating a safe, judgment-free space for conversations helps children feel supported rather than shamed. Roleplay social scenarios, talk about peer pressure, and remind your child they can always come to you. Avoid isolating them from peers—it leads to secrecy, not safety.

Dr. Shadley also advises watching for warning signs of alcohol use, such as secrecy, changes in grades, rule-breaking, or tampered alcohol at home.

Common parenting pitfalls include assuming rules alone will prevent use, being too trusting, or sending mixed messages through adult drinking habits. Instead, set clear expectations, use natural consequences, and keep communication open.

Finally, for families with a history of addiction, Dr. Shadley stresses the importance of open dialogue: “Talk about vulnerabilities. Don’t keep secrets. Prevention starts with honest, supportive relationships.”

Through connection, guidance, and honest conversations, parents can build the foundation their children need to make healthy choices—even in a world where alcohol is everywhere.
