Using principles of accounting - the “language of business” - students learn to prepare, analyze, and report an organization’s financial information to internal and external stakeholders. This degree is the foundation to become Certified Public Accountant (CPA) which is one of the most sought professional designations in the business world.
The Business Analytics major helps students unlock the power of data by mastering the skills needed to transform big data into actionable insights. Students will gain expertise in advanced techniques such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and optimization. Students in the Business Analytics majors will develop the skills to predict trends, drive strategic decisions, and lead in a data-driven world.
Critical to business today, the BTE major explores major technologies including Artificial intelligence, Cloud Computing, Cyber security, Machine Learning, FinTech, Database Systems, Coding and Tech-Innovation. The role of technology in business, digital transformation, and systems project management can also be undertaken in elective courses.
The Economics Major is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of important economic theories and their applications toward interpreting a wide range of socio-economic phenomena. The unifying methodological approach in the
Major emphasizes incentives and constraints, strategic interactions, and feedback effects. Applications include using theory to help inform policy advice at the household, business and government levels. The Major offers two tracks: Political Economy and Quantitative Economics.
The Entrepreneurship Major prepares students to engage in the process of value creation. Entrepreneurship majors acquire a holistic view of organizational creation and change that is applicable to either starting a new venture (for profit or nonprofit), or to working effectively within an existing organization.
Finance is a broad discipline that focuses on valuation, risk analysis, and decision-making in both the private and public sectors. Students learn the practical and theoretical financial framework, analytical tools, and quantitative methods necessary to be successful in a wide variety of careers.
Complement your major area of specialization with the Global Business co-major to gain a competitive edge in today’s highly globalized world. Interdisciplinary in nature, the Global Business comajor course work fosters students’ global mindset and equips them with the knowledge, skills and abilities to work and lead effectively in multinational companies.
HEALTH MANAGEMENT AND POLICY
Students in the Health Management and Policy Major learn the specialized language of the business of health care and the skills to apply the concepts of economics, management, finance, politics, law, and ethics to the health care sector
The Human Resource Management Major involves everything from recruiting to training to compensation. Students completing this major learn to craft and communicate the complex policy options that are necessary for talent acquisition and retention in an organization.
The Legal Studies major explores the legal, regulatory, ethical, and social environment in which firms operate. Students pursuing this major will engage in deep critical thinking and will practice effective decision-making based on specific substantive principles of law, ethics, and good corporate citizenship.
The Management Major is for students who are intrigued by a variety of industries and interests, wanting to understand how to be productive, effective contributors to the various communities they are embedded within or impact. It’s the perfect major for generalists who have broad interests. Majors in this field have gone on to pursue law school; graduate programs; and both profit as well as non-profit industry jobs.
Marketing is the process through which organizations identify customer needs, and then develop, promote, and distribute products and services to fulfill these needs at a price acceptable to
both consumers and companies. Marketing interfaces with all functional areas of business to create sustainable value for customers and ensure that companies are profitable.
This major is designed for students who have been, are, or hope to be leaders in various fields. The courses are hands/ on rather than theoretical and build skills in managing teams; negotiating effectively; creating and understanding emotional intelligence; and learning to lead change efforts. This major culminates with an experience shadowing a leader to learn more about what it actually takes to influence others successfully.
With a strong emphasis on quantitative methods in finance, Real Estate students learn how to apply theoretical and analytical concepts to real estate lending, investment, and development.
Supply Chain Analytics is designed to give students an understanding of the modern supply chains and the decision trade-offs, skills necessary to model supply chain problems as well as source and analyze supply chain data to create efficiency in the firms.
Interdisciplinary in nature, the coursework will provide students with an introduction to the business concepts of sustainability, background in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards for financial decisionmaking, sustainability reporting, impact investing, environmental economics, and additional perspectives from the science/ technology or policy/social fields.
The Cognates Program comprises the Areas of Knowledge component of the University of Miami’s framework for General Education. Students fulfill the Areas of Knowledge requirement by selecting and completing a cognate in the three areas of the university curriculum:
1. Arts & Humanities (A&H)
2. People & Society (P&S)
3. Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM)
A cognate requires a minimum of at least three courses, for at least nine credit hours. A major, minor, thematic cognate, or an individualized cognate will satisfy the requirement.
Students may select from thematic or individualized cognates that meet their interests, goals and curiosities.
Miami Herbert students have the flexibility to pursue additional majors and minors across all disciplines, focusing on specific interests and skill sets needed to meet career goals and broaden perspectives.
Minors and additional majors may fulfill the University’s areas of knowledge general education requirements.
Miami Herbert students are encouraged to actively engage with the world, gain a global mindset, ask questions about ideas that matter to them, and seek out diverse points of view at home and abroad.
Students may study abroad any semester after their first year. They may choose one of the “U” programs or exchange programs which offer courses that will enhance their undergraduate experience.

High-performing sophomores with interest in Wall Street and finance apply to this selective program to sharpen their job search skills. They travel to New York City to meet employers from top-tier investment and commercial banks on Wall Street, as well as major real estate related firms and other finance related businesses.
This initiative addresses the unique needs of Black students who are pursuing business degrees. It aims to enhance students’ social and academic capital through supportive mechanisms including round table discussions, mentorship and networking opportunities with current Black faculty, alumni and business professionals.
The Miami Herbert Bloomberg lab is a state-of-the-art facility where students engage with real-time financial data and analytics through Bloomberg terminals. This immersive environment equips students with practical insights into global markets, preparing them for careers in finance and investment management.
Miami Herbert’s Dean M. Fogel Entrepreneuship hub is a dynamic center dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs. Named after Dean M. Fogel, a pioneer in entrepreneurship education, the hub offers resources and mentorship to help students develop and launch their ventures. Through workshops, competitions, and incubator spaces, it fosters a supportive community where creativity thrives and entrepreneurial aspirations take flight.
Numerous courses at Miami Herbert include experiential and civic-based learning components, providing students with opportunities to apply the learning outcomes of the course to real-world scenarios.
A select group of undergraduate students travel to New York City to meet with and hear from leading marketing executives while exploring internship and employment opportunities.
The Information Resource Center serves as a digital business library that provides access to over 100 business databases. It is dedicated to supporting students with their research across the diverse subjects taught at the business school.
The Canes Behavioral Lab is a research facility housing 31 networked computers in 800 square feet of research space. All of the research stations are outfitted with leading behavioral research software.
The Miami Herbert Lecture Series features a diverse range of lectures from Nobel Prize winners and CEOs to trailblazers and cultural icons. Our various lecture series bring students, alumni, and other members of the university community together with top business leaders throughout the year.
Student teams participate in a series of workshops in preparation for the reveal of a case challenge. They develop team building and communication skills, apply critical thinking and problem solving strategies and put theory into practice as they propose solutions to the challenge(s) of a real non-profit community client.
Students create a business model and develop a business plan, incorporating market and feasibility studies. Through pitch labs, workshops, mentoring, and judge interactions, students prepare to showcase their business ideas in front of a panel of judges from a variety of companies. Each year over $50,000 is awarded to participants of the Pitch Competition.
Miami Herbert offers an array of networking and social activities to complement the academic programs. Students engage in regular mixers, clubs, and exclusive events with industry leaders. Social and cultural events foster community, and volunteer opportunities enhance local connections.

The Category 5 Student Managed Investment Fund is both an investment portfolio and a sequence of classes at Miami Herbert. With more than $1,000,000 in assets under management, the Fund provides students with real-world investment management and decision-making experience in both asset allocation and security selection.
The ICSRI at Miami Herbert leads in advancing AI and computer systems, exploring their capabilities for a safer, smarter future. Research focuses on generative AI, intelligent chatbots, machine learning for trading, natural language processing, and large-scale models. The institute research also includes blockchain, cryptocurrency, and other related intelligent systems.
The five-week intensive Latina Project program aims to help women build social capital to succeed in their professional careers and/or launch their own entrepreneurial ventures. Programming focuses on career success and entrepreneurship.
Students engage with Miami Herbert faculty in collaborative projects, experiencing first-hand the intellectual rigor of academic research. They gain invaluable insights and mentorship from faculty members recognized as experts in their respective fields. Students who excel in the research program may advance to become a Cutler Scholar.
The program is dedicated to promoting health and wellness among Miami Herbert students. Each session focuses on mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
