The McArdle Laboratory is a contemporary style building on the south side of campus The original buildingwastoosmalltoaccommodatetheneedsofthegrowingcancerresearchlabs Thedirector, Dr.HaroldRusch,raisedfundraisingandgainedtheuniversity'sapprovalforanewbuilding.
Hehelpedcreatethedesignguidelinesandwantedthenewfacilitytobe“asaustereabuildingas couldbebuilt,withcorridorsandstairsasnarrowasallowedbylaw,andwithoutfrills,likelobbies”.
Originally, a more ornate exterior design was proposed for the building; it was going to have medicalsymbolsandcoloredglasspressedintotheconcrete.But,theseplansweren’tapproved becauseitwastoo“gaudy”.
Thenewbuildingwasn’treceivedwellandwascriticizedforthelackofwindows

The spaceintendedtobeusedforavarietyof differentpurposes.Itshouldbeaflexiblespace.The roomwillbeusedforsymposiums,meetings, discussiongroups,workshops andavarietyofother eventsrelatedtotheDataScienceInstituteatUW Madison.
Thisisa multi-purposespace,sotheroomwillbethe hosttoawidevarietyofusers.Students,faculty,postdocs,companies,andmembersoftheUWMadison communitywillbegiventheopportunitytousethis space.
Usersshouldbeinvitedintoaspacethatprovokes feelingsofexcitementandofferstheopportunityfor flexibilityandcollaboration.Whileitwillbeusedasa semi-professionalspace,vibrantelementsinspired bytechnologyandnaturecanbeincorporatedto leavealastingimpactontheuser,nomatterwho theyare.
