""the time traveler"" was inspired by Stephen Hawking's book ""A Brief History of Time"" and incorporates some of the scientific principles used to percieve and measure time as well as how one might travel travel through it.

Notes for the conductor:

This piece is all about events which happen at specific points in time therefore cues should not feel nor look like down beats. Dotted lines between instruments indicate gestures which begin together.

Notes on Rhythm: Any gesture which states ""move at any pace independent of ensemble"" is meant to come off as ""disorder"" or ""chaos"" coming from ""order"" so although the performer is given the freedom to move at any speed, a very slow pace might lose the effect. Any gesture which states ""at any point within this beat..."" is meant to stagger the sounds made by the performers and create a chaotic, unsyncronized effect. While the gesture could take place on the ""downbeat"" and/or ""upbeat,"" the performers are encouraged to explore other divisions of the beat. Ideally most of the beat will be occupied by members of the ensemble executing the gesture independently.

Notes on Frames:

Throughout the piece are gestures contained within frames. Most often the framed gesture is to be repeated for a specified amount of beats or measures and that duration is always inclusive with the duration of the gesture itself.

In some cases the framed gesture must be concluded by directions from the following gesture for example: ""at some point within this beat discontinue the previous gesture and..."" There are some instances where the framed gestures do not repeat and either state ""no repeat"" or are immediately followed by additional framed instructions.

Notes for Strings: The majority of this peice incorporates some sort of tremelo effect therefore within any gesture or section with the directions ""medium trem.,"" the peformer may take up to ""c.a. a beat"" break from the gesture if needed.

Notes for the Breath Accents:

The dynamic and direction of airflow are more important then the air going only through the instrument. If neccessary, the performer may do a breath accent where only some or even none of the air goes through the reed/mouth piece so that the dynamic/direction may be achieved.
