Benefits of the Fruit Sale: This is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the band and orchestra programs and anticipated by many in our community. Funds raised provide critical support, helping to enrich the musical experience for our students such as: • • • • •

New instruments and repairs Guest artists and clinicians Transportation Solo & Ensemble and accompanists fees Summer music camp scholarships.

Supporters can choose to donate fruit to Middleton Outreach Ministry’s (M.O.M.) food pantry which will be delivered for them. Donations in lieu of sales is also appreciated and can be written on your order form whether by you or others. If your child is unable to participate, please consider a tax-deductible contribution. Receipts can be provided for tax purposes. Contact MHSBOPAtreasurer@gmail.com to obtain a receipt.

Student Incentive: Students earn commission deposited into their student accounts for the fruit they sell. The more they sell, the larger the percentage. It's a great way to offset costs of solo-ensembles and travel and funds carry over from year to year.

Delivery Day: Pick up all the fruit you have sold at MHS on Saturday, December 8th, from 8:30 a.m to 11:30 a.m. Orders over $800 should not be picked up until 10:00 a.m. Large orders will be set aside and ready to go at that time.

Payments: With over 400 students in the program, we ask that your buyers write checks directly to you in your name. On Delivery Day, bring ONE CHECK for the grand total of your orders made out to “MHS BOPA.” No money will be collected by BOPA before Dec. 8.

Calling All Volunteers for Fruit Sale!

Parent Help is Needed: The entirety of the BOPA Fruit Sale is really a "by parents, for students" fundraiser.

Supervisor of Student Sales Table: Help will be needed for supervising students who will sign up to take orders (Nov. 1 - 11) at two local grocery stores.

There will be short shifts between the hours of 4 - 8pm on school nights and various hours on the weekends. A Sign Up Genius link will be sent out soon.

Symphony Orchestra Concert On Thursday, November 15, the MHS Orchestras will present its annual Fall Concert at 7:30pm in the PAC. Featured will be all three school orchestras performing music by Richard Meyer, F.J. Haydn, Alan Hovhaness, Gustav Holst, John Rutter, Franz Schubert, and more. This will be the premiere performance of the third orchestra, proof of our growing program. This concert is free and the public is encouraged to attend. A reception will follow the concert. We will also be collecting donations for Middleton Outreach Ministries at the concert.

Orchestra Soiree The Orchestra Soiree IV will happen on Friday, November 2nd , starting with a required rehearsal at 4pm in the Band Room. All MHS Orchestra and full orchestra members come to the rehearsal and then are invited to stay for the food and fun afterward, including inflatables--Giant Hamster Balls!--and board games, movies, and a Wii Mario Cart tourney. Parents can sign up on the website to help (and they can join in on the fun as well).

Winter Band Concerts This year’s Winter Band Concerts will be on Wednesday, December 5 (Cardinal Band, Concert Band 10, Chamber Winds) and Thursday, December 6 (Concert Band 11, Wind Ensemble 12, Chamber Winds), both at 7:30pm. in the PAC. We will be sending out an email requesting cookie donations for the reception watch for that in December. We will also be collecting donations for Middleton Outreach Ministries at the concert.

Wind Ensemble and Concert Band should dress in all black.

Men: black dress pants, black socks and shoes, black collared shirt; black tie optional.

Women: all-black dress or skirt/top or pants/top, black hose and shoes (no bare knees or shoulders).

Cardinal Band should "dress nice."

Option A: collared shirt and nice pants and shoes. No jeans, athletic pants, or athletic shoes. Tie optional.

Option B: skirt, dress or pants with a formal top, no short skirts or bare shoulders, no jewelry that would call attention to yourself.

MHS Jazz Ensembles The award winning MHS Jazz Ensembles were selected by audition in September and are now into their first few weeks of preparation for the Jazz Cabaret in January.

Every Monday night, the music department is alive with the sounds of big band jazz played by four jazz ensembles. Three of these are traditional big bands consisting of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section (plus some flutes and clarinets). The Jazz Lab Band is open to any ensemble music student regardless of their jazz experience or what instrument they play. This means that every interested student has the opportunity to explore the jazz medium and the art of improvisation.

Concerto-Aria Auditions The 19th Annual Concerto-Aria Competition is coming up on January 8, 2019, but it is not too soon to start thinking about it.

Any MHS musician can audition to solo with Symphony Black in the March 14 Mike Dewey Concerto/Aria Showcase concert. Details and application will be available in the Orchestra Room some time in November and apps are due before Winter Break. A great experience, a practice audition for college or another competition, professional judges with free feedback, and the chance to solo.

Winter Teas!

On Friday, Dec 7, members of Symphony Black will make their annual run out to Sunset Ridge and Sauk Trail for their Winter Teas. Our musicians will provide background music for those schools and manage to munch a few cookies and swig down some punch in between sets.

MHS Marching Band and Color Guard Finish a Successful Season The MHS Cardinal Marching Band and Color Guard have just finished their busy 2018 season. Under the direction of Directors Doug Brown, Michael Ver Voort, and Eric Rothacker, the Cardinal Marching Band and Color Guard have flourished and become a strong competitive musical team that offers support to school functions and community events. The Color Guard is coached by Derek Laughlin and Lisa Cole with assistants Vanesa Meneses and Codie Mahone.

The season’s show, “Catching Shadows”, garnered several awards including a 2nd place division AAAA finish at both the Waukesha North BandFest and Mukwonago High School Invitational; In Mukwonago, the MHS Cardinal Marching Band also received an award for Best Music overall. At October’s Sauk Prairie Marching Invitational the Cardinal Marching Band earned 1st place in the AAAA division as well as Best Color Guard overall. The Cardinal Marching Band concluded their competitive season at Whitewater’s WSMA State Championships on October 13th, where the band placed 6th in the AAAA division, while the Color Guard placed 4th. The Cardinal Marching Band thanks the many teachers, parents, family members, and friends of the band who help to make their season possible.

Winds of Wisconsin Congratulations to the Middleton High School band students who have been accepted, through an audition process, into the Winds of Wisconsin (WoW), a premier high school wind ensemble on the UW-Madison campus! Winds of Wisconsin is associated with the University of Wisconsin Madison School of Music and is conducted by Scott Teeple, Associate Professor of Music at UW-Madison.

Ensembles Coaches Dan 8 Wallach

Daniel Wallach received his BM and MM degrees from UW-Madison under the instruction of Les Thimmig. Daniel has studied jazz with George Garzone, Steve Duke, Dave Pike, Greg Keel, Bill Sears, and Richard Davis. He has also studied concert saxophone with Daniel Stewart, Emeritus Professor of Winds at UW-Stevens Point.

While attending UW-Madison, Daniel played lead alto sax in its Jazz Ensemble One and principal saxophone in Symphonic Band under the direction of James Smith. He has been a soloist with the UW-Madison Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Becker and the Madison Symphony under the direction of John DeMain. Daniel is currently the professor of saxophone, director of the Jazz Ensemble, and instructor of Jazz History, Saxophone Quartet, and the Jazz Combo at Edgewood College. He has performed with the Temptations and shared the stage with Chick Corea, Maceo Parker, Tower of Power, War, and Morris Day and the Time. His former band Phat Phunktion has been featured as the house band on an episode of the Jenny Jones talk show. Daniel has been a frequent performer at the Isthmus Jazz Festival and other festivals throughout the country. He is an active educator, teaching saxophone and jazz improvisation throughout the Midwest.

Ethan Warden Ethan Warden is a trombone player in the Madison Wisconsin area. He received his Bachelors of Music Education - Instrumental from Missouri State University (MSU) and is currently pursuing a Masters of Music Performance in Trombone at UW - Madison.

Ethan has experience with both teaching music students privately and in large and small ensemble settings. This experience was gained through student teaching at Verona Area High School with Eric Anderson, working as a brass technician with area bands in Missouri, and teaching privately during his time at MSU and UW-Madison.

Outside of music, Ethan enjoys going kayaking, hiking, biking and trying new local cuisine with his wife.

Halie Silverman-Brown Halie Silverman-Brown is currently principal trumpet of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra. Halie completed her Bachelors in Trumpet Performance at the Eastman School of Music in 2008, and her Masters of Music at Louisiana State University, where she studied with Brian Shaw and was a teaching assistant. Mrs. Brown has performed with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra and with the LSU School of Music brass faculty, the LPO, Naples Artists Series, Southwest Florida Symphony, Univision Latin Grammy Award Bands, tours with the New Sousa Band and performs as an Eb cornet soloist with the Great Wester Rocky Mountain Brass Band. Long interested in international trumpet study, Brown traveled to Europe in 2007 to work with Ole Edvard Antonsen in Norway and Bruce Rhoten and Bob Platte in Germany. In the summer of 2008, she was invited to attend the Chosen Vale Music Seminar, a workshop featuring renowned trumpeters from around the world. Brown has performed Alexander Goedicke’s Concert Etude at Louisiana State University, the Music in the Mountains Festival in Colorado, with the Symphony of Toys at Meyerson Symphony Hall in Dallas, and on National Public Radio’s From The Top, a radio show featuring talented young musicians. Her major teachers include James Thompson, Bob Earley, and Michael Hesse. She has also studied with Mark Gould, Ed Caroll, Gabriele Cassone, Stephen Burns, Markus Stockhausen, Thomas Stevens, Tony Plog, and Scott Ramsey.

Ensemble Coaches (continued from previous page) Danielle Breisach Dr. Danielle Breisach’s exuberance and compassion permeate her performing and teaching. In demand as a collaborative musician and teacher, Dr. Breisach has performed all over the United States as well as in Canada, Asia and Europe. In addition to teaching as Associate Lecturer of Flute at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, she maintains a private studio of over 30 highly successful students in Madison, WI. In the summer, Dr. Breisach teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Summer Music Clinics and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Flute Camp. She has adjudicated competitions for the National Flute Association, the Florida Flute Association and the Wisconsin Flute Festival.

As Co-Artistic Director of the Madison Flute Club since 2012, Dr. Breisach has extended the reach of the organization through founding the Chamber Ensemble, which gave its debut performance at the National Flute Association’s annual convention in 2014. Additionally, Dr. Breisach founded the Middle School and High School Flute Ensembles in 2013, giving young, Madisonarea flutists the opportunity to collaborate with one another and gain experience on piccolo, alto flute and bass flute.

Dr. Breisach has appeared in performances, masterclasses and festivals in United States, Canada, Italy, and China including the Bay View Music Conservatory, Le Domaine Forget, and the Banff Centre. She has performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, among others, and has been a concerto soloist with the Western Michigan University Symphony Orchestra. In addition to modern flute, she is a baroque flute and celtic flute enthusiast, and has participated in baroque masterclasses with Kim Pineda and Barthold Kuijken.

Previously, Dr. Breisach has been on the faculty at Western Michigan University, Middleton High School, and the West Michigan Flute Association. She lives in Madison, WI with her husband Jeff and their two dogs and three cats. In her free time, she enjoys traveling to Bay View, MI, kayaking, hiking, and reading.

WSMA Wisconsin Honors Ensemble Auditions Deadline for Applications Drawing Near Celebrating its 50th year, the WSMA State Honors Music Project is nationally recognized as one of the finest opportunities for young people. Regardless of your future college major, membership in the High School State Honors Music Project helps set you apart from other college applicants. Students selected for the WSMA State Honors Music Project participate in an intensive four day summer camp in June and perform in Madison during late October as part of the Wisconsin State Music Conference.

Membership provides you with one of the best musical and personal experiences of your life.

Who Is Eligible?

Students in grades 9, 10, and 11 from WSMA-member schools are eligible to audition for the High School State Honors Music Project. Students must be a regular member of a school music ensemble at the time of auditions and the fall performance. All selected students must attend the summer camp and perform in Madison for the October concert.

Registration deadline is December 1, 2018 at 11:59pm.

Middleton High School is one of the audition sites.

Auditions at MHS will take place Saturday February 2, 2019.
