SAFETY CORNER

Save lives by enforcing safety rules Let me start by asking a question. How many of you would always drive the speed limit if enforcement by the police was non-existent? This is the state of enforcement for forklift rules and regulations in many workplaces. Many supervisors responsible for enforcing safe forklift operation don’t actually know all the rules of safe operation. It may have been many years since they actually drove one or they may never have operated one at all, but many have not been through their own forklift safety class in many years. How can someone properly manage operations they know little or nothing about? The answer is “They can’t.” Even when supervisors know the rules, some are hesitant to enforce them. How many times have you seen a supervisor tell an operator to get their seatbelt on, sound their horn or just slow down? They may not like this job duty, but it is part of the job they are paid to do. Police officers may not enjoy giving out tickets, but it is their job. We had a local forklift fatality as the result of a forklift crushing him when he got off to work with the load. I am Remanufactured Transmissions, Engines, Torque Converters, Steer Axles, Overhaul Kits and Aftermarket Parts for: • Material Handling • Construction • Agricultural Equipment

sure that it was commonplace for operators to jump off without setting the parking brake and I would bet that supervisors probably had knowledge of it, but it took the death of a 38-year old man with a family to finally get it noticed and enforced. Here are some suggestions for those that supervise forklift operators: 1) Take your own company’s forklift certification class periodically to stay up to speed with your site specific rules. 2) Look for things your people are doing wrong with your forklifts. Tell them how to do it right and expect them to do it that way next time. If they continue doing it incorrectly, you must take appropriate actions. I once saw a sign that read, “Asking me to overlook a simple safety violation, would be asking me to compromise the value of your life.” How true! 3) Follow through with proper discipline if people do things wrong, otherwise you become a hypocrite and will not be taken seriously on even the most important issues as a supervisor. 4) Look for the things your people are doing right with your forklifts. Tell them you appreciate their hard work and skills and compliment them on their safe operations. CREAMER'S CORNER

You have choices - Part III This will be the last of this series “You have choices” and hope that you come away with a better understanding of the different equipment available. Most of these equipment manufacturers are happy to demo their equipment at your facility. All you have to do is ask. So, in the last series, we stop at giving you choices of different sweeper and scrubber manufacturers to accommodate varying facility square foot sizes. As you have read, we discussed equipment for 10-25K, 2550K and 50-100K square foot facilities. Today, we will continue going up the scale with 100-250K, 250-500K and finally 500K-1M square foot. Again, one of the major decision in all of this is whether you need a sweeper, scrubber or a sweeper/ scrubber combination. You must decide this first. For many companies it is a very simple decision. But for some, you could go either way. Let’s discuss just of few because I am going to discuss this subject at some point in the future. Companies with very dusty environments such as cement factories, furniture manufacturing and steel or aluminum foundries are situations where a sweeper is the best cleaning machine. These are common sense decisions for these companies when you think about it. If you were to use a scrubber for example or a sweeper/ scrubber for that matter at a cement factory, what do you think is going to happen? The cement dust is going to be scrubbed and vacuumed into the recovery tank. And, we all know what you get when you mix cement and water. So in my opinion a sweeper is the “no brainer” solution. Besides these factors, there is the cost of maintaining the equipment. A company will spend five times the amount to maintain a rider scrubber versus a rider sweeper. If you are planning to spend $1K on parts per year to maintain a sweeper, figure $5K annually for a scrubber and more for a sweeper/scrubber. Why? It’s simple. There are more high fatality parts that need to be replaced on a scrubber than a sweeper. For a sweeper you need to regularly replace the 1) Main broom and side broom, and 2) Vacuum chamber and hopper skirts, the hopper filter and engine maintenance if gas/lp. However, for a scrubber you will need to regularly purchase and stock 1) Cleaning/scrubbing detergent and regularly purchase 2) Main brushes (there are usually two main brushes on a scrubber) and the side scrub brush, 3) Rear 16

squeegees, 4) side squeegees, 5) scrub deck squeegees and 6) vacuum motor. When it comes to a sweeper/scrubber you then have the best of both worlds when it comes to buying parts. Some dealers refer to them as “money pits.” Don’t misunderstand me. Today’s sweeper/scrubbers do an extremely good job of sweeping and scrubbing. There are just a lot of high fatality parts that go into its makeup. So, be aware of these facts. Another item is the battery/electric versus gas/lp. The only battery/electric rider scrubber that stands out is the Tennant T17 Rider Scrubber. It has the ability to scrub for 7-8 hours on a single charge. So, this is what I recommend: Building size 100 – 250K thousand square foot • Tennant S30 LP sweeper • Tennant T17 battery/electric rider scrubber • PowerBoss Nautilus scrubber • PowerBoss Commander T82 LP sweeper/scrubber Building size 250 – 500K thousand square foot • Tennant 800 LP sweeper • Tennant T17 battery/electric rider scrubber • Nilfisk-Advance SC8000 rider scrubber • Nilfisk-Advance CS7010 rider sweeper/scrubber(1st LPG/gas hybrid) • PowerBoss Commander T90 LP sweeper/scrubber Building size 500 – 1,000M million square foot • Tennant 800 LP sweeper • Nilfisk-Advance SW8000 rider sweeper • Tennant T17 battery/electric rider scrubber • Nilfisk-Advance SC8000 rider scrubber • Nilfisk-Advance CS7010 rider sweeper/scrubber(1st LPG/gas hybrid • PowerBoss Commander T90 LP sweeper/scrubber Thanks for reading and hope you do your “due diligence” on this equipment. However, if you need assistance or insight, e-mail me. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/ scrubber. New ED-EP electric pallet truck scales with lift accurate technology

UniCarriers Americas Corporation launches pneumatic diesel forklifts

Class III lift trucks, electric pallet jacks and stackers represent over 30% of the total lift truck market in North America. With the number of units delivered to end users every year reaching hundreds of thousands of units it makes sense that the demand for lift truck scales for class III applications is also on the rise. Load cell systems often cost more than the unit itself and require costly ongoing calibration to be used as a productive weight recovery system. The sensitivity, speed and relatively compact limit of the pallet jacks hydraulic system would not allow consistent weight recovery for more affordable hydraulic scales. www.skidweigh.com

Backed by the industry’s best standard, limited warranty, UniCarriers Americas (UCA) has announced the launch of its new PD Series Pneumatic Internal Combustion (IC) Diesel forklifts. This next-generation IC diesel series, which replaces the outgoing FK Series, provides the horsepower and torque needed for demanding work applications, while delivering lower emissions and higher fuel economy. Standard features designed to maximize operator comfort and productivity include full suspension seats with adjustable lumbar, multi-function LCD/LED display, fuel saver mode, ground speed control, operator presence system and standard memory tilt steering. www.unicarriers.com

Dematic mobile automation solutions exceeding expectations Dematic continues to see its Compact product line of lower cost automated guided vehicles (AGVs) gain traction in the North American marketplace. After its initial release a little more than two years, the Compact AGV mobile automation solution has exceeded all expectations. In the first full year of production, orders for Compact AGVs were almost 25% ahead of plan. By year end 2017, almost 50 units had been manufactured and delivered to customers. This amount already has been exceeded in 2018, with additional orders that will increase this even further. www.dematic.com

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Fueling your body It’s common knowledge that if you put diesel fuel into a non-diesel car you can cause a lot of damage to your fuel system and engine. The same can be said for the fuel we put into our bodies. Unfortunately, most people are filling their bodies with improper fuel. Food is essential to life and is the fuel that will either fill you with energy or be stored as fat and decrease your well-being. In short, every bite you take is either fighting a disease or feeding it. It’s important to educate yourself on the food you eat. With all of the information out there it’s hard to figure out what constitutes proper nutrition and real food. To educate yourself, start by reading the labels. If the label has a multitude of ingredients that you can’t pronounce or makes extraordinary health claims, beware. Real or healthy foods will either have no label or will have very few ingredients listed. When you are looking at the labels on the food you eat keep the following three things in mind: 1. Sugar - Americans consumes more than 150 pounds of sugar per person, per year. Sugar can be labeled as: fructose, HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), fruit juice, natural cane sugar or any other ingredient ending in “ose.” Sugar has been proven to be highly addictive. Also, note the serving size on the label. The sugar content on a drink may indicate 25g but there are two servings. That’s 50g in the bottle. 2. L ow fat foods - Low-fat or fat-free foods can be very bland and will typically include added sugars to improve the taste. Although the full-fat option may have more calories, it also has the fats the body needs to provide nutrients, which are much better for you than the added sugars. For example, avocados are a fruit with fat at 77% of calories; yet, they are a great source of fiber and contain 40% more potassium than bananas. Salmon is a fatty fish loaded with heart26

healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Coconuts are very high in medium-chain fatty acids, which are metabolized differently than other fats. They can reduce appetite, increase fat burning and provide numerous health benefits. 3. Gluten-Free - If something is labeled gluten-free it doesn’t automatically mean it’s a healthier option. Food manufactures address the bland taste and texture by adding fat and sugar. A 2017 study in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics compared 1,700 products and found that gluten-free foods had more fat, saturated fat, salt and sugar than similar, traditional offerings. “Food is the most powerful drug on the planet,” says Dr. Hyman. “It can improve the expression of thousands of genes, balance dozens of hormones, optimize tens of thousands of protein networks, reduce inflammation and optimize your microbiome (gut flora) with every single bite. It can cure most chronic diseases; it works faster, better and cheaper than any drug ever discovered; and the only side effects are good ones…” Author Mark Hyman, MD of the book FOOD, What the Heck Should I Eat. To encourage healthier eating, TVH provides fresh fruit for all the employees. “I find myself eating more fruit and more variety because of the complimentary fruit offered each week,” responded a TVH worker. In an effort to empower their employees to live a healthier lifestyle, TVH offers Wellness classes, speaking engagements with certified nutritionists, as well as coaching from myself as the Health and Wellness Coach and our on-site HealthStat clinic. It’s easy to take something and complicate it, however, to take something complicated and simplify it is an art. My best advice is to eat foods that are not processed. Eat to live rather than living to eat. Be mindful of your daily sugar intake and reduce it. Equipment rental revenue to grow to nearly $60 billion by 2021

In its latest five-year forecast, the American Rental Association (ARA) expects equipment rental industry revenue to continue to grow consistently in the United States over the next five years, resulting in total revenue of $59.6 billion in 2021. According to the ARA Rental Market Monitor™ five-year forecast updated in February, total rental revenue in the U.S. is expected to grow by 4.5 percent in 2018 to reach $51.5 billion, 5.6 percent in 2019, 5 percent in 2020 and 4.4 percent in 2021. The February forecast is identical to the previous forecast released in November 2017 for 2018, with slight upticks in the expected revenue growth rates for 2019 through 2021. In Canada, equipment rental revenue also is expected to show consistent growth, reaching $5.35 billion in 2018 with growth rates of 4.1 percent in 2019, 5 percent in 2020 and 4.7 percent in 2021 to total $6.125 billion, which is nearly identical to the November 2017 forecast. Some of the positive expectations in the U.S. are a result of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act taking effect in 2018. “Our rental revenue forecast has increased somewhat in the out-years of the forecast. One significant reason for this increase is the long-term effects of the recently-passed tax cuts for both businesses and individuals,” said John McClelland, ARA’s vice president for government affairs and chief economist. “Tax cuts generally provide fiscal stimulus to the economy, which can lead to more investment by businesses and higher employment. This can push wages higher, pushing up consumer spending on goods and services as well as leisure activities,” McClelland said. “All of these trends will help every segment of rental. The greatest concern we have is that of rising inflation that could result from an extremely tight labor market and rising prices for goods and services that are now part of the reflation of the global economy,” he said. www.ararental.org

Justrite Safety Group acquires Eagle Manufacturing Company

Justrite® Safety Group, a supplier of products for the safe management of flammable liquids and other hazardous materials, has announced the acquisition of West Virginia-based Eagle® Manufacturing Company (Eagle), a prime manufacturer of safety cans, safety cabinets, spill containment products, poly drums and material handling products. The addition expands the Justrite Safety Group. Established in 1894 and based in Wellsburg, W.Va., Eagle brings a wide range of industrial safety and material handling products that cater to customers in a variety of sectors including construction, oil and gas, utilities, transportation, chemical and medical, to name a few. “The acquisition of Eagle by Justrite Safety Group further demonstrates our business strategy to better serve our customers within the industrial safety and material handling product sector of the global market,” said Mark McElhinny, Justrite president and CEO. “We value Eagle’s ongoing commitment to meet their customers’ expectations for ‘compliance solutions’ products to help industry meet strict local, state and federal regulations,” said McElhinny. “Eagle’s advanced manufacturing and skilled craftsmanship will integrate seamlessly into our distribution and engineered solution sales channels.” Joe Eddy, Eagle president, said the company will continue to sell Eagle-branded products, but the acquisition is an incredible growth opportunity for Eagle. “This transaction will fuel revenue growth, create additional job opportunities, allow for product expansion and provide for greater economic impact in our community, state and region,” Eddy said. Eddy has been named an executive vice president in the Justrite Safety Group leading the North American Chemical Safety business, which will include the Justrite operation in Mattoon, Ill. The Eagle portfolio comprises more than 1,000 products, all of which are made in the USA, and include: safety cans, safety cabinets, spill containment products, poly drums, and material handling products. Thurman Scale celebrates a century of success

Thurman Scale, the leader in the off-road vehicle weighing industry and specialist in scales for ultra-heavy capacity off-road vehicles, announces it is celebrating 100 successful years of product and industry innovation. On top of highlighting last century’s achievements, Thurman proudly continues to drive innovation in the off-road vehicle and weighing industries. From February 9 – 11, 2018, in Longboat Key, Florida, Thurman will hold a centennial event to mark the milestone achievement. From a machining company founded in 1918 in Columbus, Ohio, Thurman grew quickly by taking advantage of easy access to major transportation routes, such as the Ohio and Erie Canals and nearby highways. Thurman was purchased in 1940 by engineer and entrepreneur Millard M. Cummins, who expanded the business to include scale production. Thurman added a batching scale in 1946, followed by the first Thurman motor vehicle scale in 1948. These rugged, high-quality scale designs proved a perfect fit for the weighing needs of the interstate highway building program of the 1960s, and the coal industry “boom years” from the early 1970s into the 1980s. By 1960, Thurman had diversified to produce portable, above ground, and pit-type motor truck scales, axle load scales, beam and dial scales, and scales specifically designed for hoppers and tanks, livestock, warehousing, and forklifts. For decades, Thurman produced scale products from its manufacturing facility in Columbus, continuously improving its standard scale offerings and its custom designed off-road vehicle scales. In 1995, the Cummins family sold Thurman Scale to the Nordens of Kansas City, Missouri, owners of Fairbanks Scales. Under the ownership of Bill Norden, and the management of long time Thurman salesman Neil Copley, Thurman headquarters remained in Columbus. Since then, Thurman Scale has continued its dedication to producing quality weighing equipment, recently updating its rail scale line and launching such new user-friendly instruments as the TS3200 Series and TS600 Series. “The entire team is thrilled by the success the Thurman Scale brand has achieved,” said Rick Norden, owner of Fairbank Scales. www.thurmanscale.com
