SketchUp 2017 is here! The smartest SketchUp yet.

Transparency

Graphics Pipeline 2.0

We’ve made big improvement to transparency, which should now render faster and at high quality to. SketchUp is also now much better at displaying multiple transparencies to provide a more realistic sense of depth across several see-through faces.

In this release, we’ve made major improvements to our graphics pipeline, allowing for performance improvements. Now, SketchUp, 3D Warehouse, LayOut, My SketchUp, and Trimble Connect all render models using the same under-the-hood algorithms – all tuned for buttery 3D orbiting.

High DPI Modeling

There’s more!

We’ve tuned snapping and inferencing for high definition monitors (like Apple’s Retina Display). Edge weights have also been smart-scaled. You can back away from your screen now...

Perpendicular Face Inferencing Have you mastered parallel inferencing? We’ve added a ‘Perpendicular to Face’ inference. Hover a face; SketchUp will helpfully snap to its perpendicular.

Cathy Azria, BD Designs More recently, she has taken the concept of a sculptural contemporary fire outside, with a number of striking focal points for the deck, terrace or garden.

4 Landscape & Urban Design

Working with leading international interior designers, landscape architects and private clients on projects for luxury hotels, and high-end homes and gardens, Azria draws inspiration from natural materials, organic forms, the interplay of light, and a conviction that what is functional should also be beautiful.

ach sculpture becomes the heart of an outdoor room. Running on mains gas or ethanol they can be built into a chimney, fire, frost proof box or on to slabs, creating an exciting visual feature, particularly dramatic at night.

Her first designs, crafted in steel, centred on the linear shapes of traditional bonfires such as sticks of wood and matches. However, she has since introduced softer shapes which allow the flames to flicker in a series of full circles, to mesmerising effect. With each of the designs the metal elements grow, crackle

and pop, staying heated long after the fire has been turned off. “I have always been attracted to the inner temple of the fireplace,” says Azria. ”I love the idea of entertaining the flames; giving them an installation to play around. In the city we have a sensory overload and so there is a real personal value in being able

to centre your thoughts on one piece that you enjoy. For me, that makes the creation process so worthwhile.” Born in Tunisia, and brought up in France, Azria came to London in the 1980s to study sculpture with renowned abstract sculptor, Jean Gibson.

Having discovered her passion she later began to explore the concept of steel fire installations when her search for a contemporary fireplace for her own home proved fruitless. Drawing on the tutorship she had received, Azria visualised artfully stacked metal pieces in the fireplaces and through experimentation, her designs were finally realised. Fire is the area that interests her most and since starting out she has been exploring the whole concept of fire and light, using metal both for its sculptural potential and for the way that it responds to heat as the metal expands and contracts.

Azria works to commission creating bespoke pieces by establishing a train of thought, then developing and refining it in response to each client’s requirements.

Every piece is therefore unique, signed and numbered by its creator. www.bd-designs.co.uk

Elevate A Garden Design Scheme Using A Greenhouse

A Hartley Botanic bepoke lean to greenhouse within a walled garden

T

his year, Longview Design was commissioned by Lancashirebased, heritage greenhouse manufacturer Hartley Botanic to design their RHS Chelsea Flower Show tradestand. The stand won a 5 star award for the RHS recommended manufacturer. Landscape Architect Joe Perkins, CoDirector of Longview Design reveals some key insights around incorporating a greenhouse or glasshouse into a garden scheme. From a client consultancy point of view, suggesting the addition of a greenhouse or glasshouse to a garden scheme means your client can begin to get year-round enjoyment of their outdoor space. For keen gardeners, allocating a space in their garden ‘under glass’ extends the range of plants they can grow and allows them to indulge in a specific plant passion. Victorian-inspired ‘plant collecting’ has definitely come back into fashion, partly thanks to a renewed interest in architectural tropical-style plants and hardy succulents. A greenhouse is a great way to not only extend a plant collection but also to house and show it off.

8 Landscape & Urban Design

Greenhouses can make an extremely effective focal point for a garden scheme. They are great for zoning off and visually organising a large, unwieldy space and can add a central structure to work around. I am particularly fond of using them in walled gardens or within a classic English vegetable garden. A lean-to can work well here and adds a beautiful, historic draw for the eye. Pick a classic greenhouse design for this, such as a bespoke Victorian lean-to from Hartley Botanic, or for larger gardens, try their Victorian Manor Glasshouse. A contemporary glasshouse can look really breathtaking within a more modern planting scheme and, with designs which are generally more minimalist, if used cleverly, garden planting schemes can extend through them. A modern design and a modern approach would also be to see the greenhouse or glasshouse as a living and organic part of the garden rather than as a separate structure. I loved the way designer Catherine MacDonald achieved this at Chelsea last year using a Hartley bespoke glasshouse. The glasshouse becomes almost at one with

the plantings as a result of the well-paired colours and the thin, waif-like trees. As long as a greenhouse or glasshouse is beautiful and well made then its vertical structure can add real value within a garden scheme. It’s height and architectural qualities brings depth and three-dimensional balance to a garden, especially if overall plantings are quite low. In addition to the benefit they bring as a structure, if your client wants help designing how they use their greenhouse your plant sourcing choices can also harmonise with the colours and textures of the wider garden. If used cleverly, a greenhouse can become an incredible tool for any gardener, but can also act as a useful anchor point for your designs. All Hartley Botanic’s greenhouses and glasshouses are made to order. or a summer, Le Banc de neige recreates the magical snowbanks left over from Quebec’s winter storms. At once a platform and a public bench, the ephemeral installation modifies the user’s relation to the public space by allowing a multitude of appropriations. As it drapes around the tree trunks and street lamps of the Place de Bordeaux with a luminous white, it magnifies these elements of the everyday while providing seating platforms for the pétanque court. These multiple bases are generated by a series of topographical contours alluding

Passers-by are invited to settle in and take break by contemplating the urban landscape of St-Paul Street, while the most adventurous will climb the snowbank to hide in the dense foliage of trees, sheltered from the street. The project was built commissioned by Quebec City

street art festival Passages Insolites. It was one a dozen art installations in the heart of the historic center. Moreover, it was conceived to be a public infrastructure to display the potential of inviting urban design. THREE IN ONE FOR UTTLESFORD DISTRICT COUNCIL WITH TORO’S LT-F3000 Council sees efficiency soar thanks to new Toro mower

U

ttlesford District Council’s decision to opt for Toro’s LTF3000 flail when the need arose for a new grounds mower to tackle the area’s parks and open spaces is one that has made a significant difference to productivity and efficiency. The LT-F3000 is expected to maintain 760,000 square metres of parkland and open spaces per month and Steve King, Uttlesford’s street services supervisor, says it was evident that the LT-F3000 was “more than up to the task” straight away as it began having “a notable impact on the efficiency of the workforce” within just two weeks. Steve continues: “We’ve been using the flail for two weeks now and it’s already having a notable impact on efficiency. We’re finding the LT-F3000 is capable of achieving the same amount of work that we would otherwise have to bring three dedicated mowers in for. This level of versatility in one mower has significantly improved the team’s productivity rate. “Our previous machine’s cutting width was 1.7m, but the new mower boasts a 2.12m cutting width, which has enabled us to cut down on operating times.

24 Landscape & Urban Design

We’ve also found that the flail’s three cutting units follow the contours of the ground better than our former single unit machine, resulting in a superb after-cut appearance.”

machines, but the Toro shone through by promising to deliver everything our sites demand. It’s great to see this translate to our working day and the results we are producing.”

This high quality finish is achieved no matter what the length of the grass is to start with, says Steve: “Long, short, wet, coarse, the result is always great. The LTF3000 can easily cut meadows, the height of cut just needs to be adjusted, and it’s very good with small bank work as it’s solid and stable.

If that weren’t enough, “the professional manner of Reesink Turfcare’s representative Danny Lake cemented our decision,” says Steve. “He was very personable and really cared about helping us choose the best investment for our needs. Reesink’s customer service has been absolutely fantastic throughout, with any queries handled quickly and efficiently.”

“It’s easy to transport too; the front units can be tucked up out of the way and secured by good, sturdy fixing points so towing is safe and fast. With this feature, the machine can be moved from site to site hassle-free and we can now access trickier sites which were previously impossible. We are looking to get the machine road registered, so it could be even more productive!” Uttlesford District Council’s grounds maintenance division prides itself on delivering a high level of service to its residents and every machinery choice is made with a great deal of care. Steve says: “We considered a variety of different

Uttlesford District Council’s grounds team of nine replaces its machines every seven years and welcomes this as an opportunity to consider new technology to improve the already high level of service it provides to the residents of Uttlesford. In choosing machines like the Toro LTF3000, which the council has found has the capability to do the work of three machines, it seems fair to say Uttlesford District Council is making all the right choices. www.reesinkturfcare.co.uk

SEEING IS BELIEVING AT BRICKENDON GRANGE GOLF CLUB

Two new Otterbine aerating fountains to celebrate golden jubilee

Brickendon Grange’s deputy greenkeeper Lewis Mattholie, left, and H2O Plants’ Billy Hancock, right, stand behind one of two Otterbine Fractional five-in-one aerating fountains installed by H2O Plants.

T

here’s nothing like a bit of ingenuity to bring in the results, as Lewis Mattholie, deputy greenkeeper at Brickendon Grange Golf Club, can attest to. And the result is two new beauty spots, thanks to Otterbine’s Fractional aerators, for the club’s golfers to enjoy. With its 17th hole voted the Greatest Amateur Hole in the UK in the 2016 Grass Roots Golf competition, Lewis and the team at the Hertfordshire club wanted all the club’s holes to be equal. And with the problem of slightly stagnating water in two of the ponds flanking the eighth and eighteenth holes to solve, and the occasion of the club’s 50th anniversary to mark, Lewis decided it was time to tackle the problem.

26 Landscape & Urban Design

“The water in two of our ponds needed some TLC,” Lewis tells us. “The water was stagnating a little and starting to smell. I knew the answer was an aerator, but as with most things in life it’s a bit of a hard sell to get people to buy into something they can’t see. “I figured I could quite easily create a makeshift unit with a hose and end plug to demonstrate the affect of a fountain, so I went ahead and made one!” The result was the management committee could instantly see how a fountain would rejuvenate the two holes by bringing beauty and tranquillity to them, essentially creating two new beauty spots for golfers to enjoy.

Knowing Brickendon’s ponds needed aerators, Lewis ingeniously created a makeshift fountain to demonstrate the benefits they would bring.

And by choosing Otterbine’s Fractional five-in-one aerating system, which combines beauty with function, the club not only benefits from two new beauty spots, but improved water quality too. The Fractional can be relied upon to keep the ecosystem of any smaller area of water in perfect balance thanks to its ability to transfer an impressive 1kg/2.2lbs of oxygen per hp/hr and its pumping rate of 115m3/ph. Lewis says: “The water quality has vastly improved. Gone is the problem of stagnating and smelling water, which was perfect timing for the club’s 50th anniversary!”

Aquatic specialists H2O Plants’ Billy Hancock carried out the timely installation of both fountains, ensuring the equipment was tailored to the club’s needs and giving support throughout the entire process.

Golfers at Brickendon can now enjoy two new beauty spots thanks to Otterbine’s Fractional aerators.

Obviously impressed with this service, the club highly recommends H2O Plants and intends to enlist Billy’s help again with any future pond aerator installations. As we’ve mentioned, the idea for the project came about to mark the occasion of the club’s 50th anniversary in 2016 and one member of the club was so taken with the idea they offered to step in and pay for both fountains!

One member of the club supported the idea of installing pond aerators so wholeheartedly, they paid for both fountains to mark the club’s golden jubilee.

Which leads us to ponder the club’s nickname of the ‘ace of Herts’. While we know it’s so named for its geographical location, with such kind-hearted members we wonder if it’s more appropriately named the ‘ace of hearts’! www.otterbine.com

VertiVerd – Vertical Gardens Made Easy VertiVerd vertical green wall modules are designed as a cost effective and practical solution for domestic and light commercial applications.

D

o you love the look of a living wall, but the thought of installing, or constructing, a massive planter is not appealing and just seems too difficult? Would you rather build a vertical garden out of small parts and piece them together in manageable sections, but still have the finished product look like one big living wall as opposed to several small planters? Does the cost of existing modular systems make it too expensive to achieve your dreams? Then the new VertiVerd vertical garden kit should catch your eye. This self-irrigating planter has a super simple design and is easy to assemble. Resulting in a stunning vertical garden, at a fraction of the costs of other systems, which can be used by professionals and enthusiasts alike. You can even use a row of these containers beneath a window instead of the typical planter boxes. Not only are they lightweight and easy to attach to a wall or wooden railing, but you can combine multiple segments to create any length of planter you need.

28 Landscape & Urban Design

Simply screw the planters to timber battens mounted on your wall or fence or, for even easier assembly, VertiVerd can be hung on 2” galvanised weld mesh which requires much fewer wall penetrations for the supporting brackets. They are also conveniently designed to hold individual flower pots, so you can easily remove and replace plants as you like. This feature is great for a seasonal herb garden or planting colourful annual flowers each spring, summer and autumn. In addition to being simple to set up and install, this vertical garden system is also designed with water-conservation and easy irrigation in mind. Save water, save money, and save time all while growing healthier and happier plants. You only need to water the top level of your garden (manually or through a simple drip irrigation system), and then the underlying levels are watered one after the other through a trickle-down system built into each planter. VertiVerd Vertical Wall Planters are sold in 3-pocket sections in which you can place 3 planted 5” pots, or, insert the optional

removable filter tray layer fill with soil and plant directly into the pockets. Both the pot inserts and filter tray helps plants “breathe” and grow healthier, while a reservoir in the bottom of each planter keeps plants watered up to two weeks, depending on climate and species. Make your living wall as large or as small as you like. You can also design your garden in a unique shape or design using a variety of mounting options and spacing, plus you can use them indoors or out. And if that wasn’t enough, the containers are safe for growing edibles (made from recycled polypropylene). VertiVerd is one of a range of modular vertical gardens, consisting of three innovative products to suit all demands and budgets, which are marketed by dot-pot (a trading name of Hy-Tex (UK) Limited). Instant Hedges

I

nstant Hedges is known nationwide for our outstanding instant hedges in trough form or individual plants grown specifically to form an instant hedge when planted. However a well kept secret up to now is we stock the widest range of PLEACHED TREES in the UK.

Low pleaches are proving equally as popular as the standard counterparts so our stock reflects this. We have a variety of low pleaches with a clear stem of 100cm or 150cm. The species we have available include Prunus laurocerasus, Photinia, Ilex, Fagus and Liquidambar.

Our extensive portfolio of stock allows us to cater for projects where the budget is more restrictive requiring the use of younger 12-14cm girth pleached trees to grow on and fill out in the coming season upto mature 30-35cm pleached trees with full coverage across the trellis for the perfect instant screen.

Sourcing plants for projects can be more challenging during the summer months when rootballed trees are not an option but we have all of these pleached trees in containers on our nursery available for your project NOW.

The standard pleached tree size is 150x150cm frame on a 180-200cm clear stem. We have these in abundance but our range is not limited to these sizes. We have frame sizes upto 180cm tall or 180cm wide depending on the specific need. We also have trained nursery men who can adapt the existing framework or stem height to customise the pleached tree for your specific project. The species we have available include Prunus laurocerasus, Photinia, Quercus Ilex, Ilex, Pyrus Chanticleer and Carpinus.

Garden Hideouts According to a report issued earlier this year, the sales of ‘garden rooms’ – from shepherd huts to larger bespoke spaces – increased by 22% last year* – building on rapid growth in 2014 and 2015. Whether it’s individual families avoiding the cost of moving house (particularly paying stamp duty) or a prep school creating a separate library, the popularity of building a garden room continues to build momentum. There is also a trend towards them becoming more elaborate and luxurious – underfloor heating is now pretty standard and there is no reason why an extra bedroom in your garden can’t come with a steam

Garden Trends to Look Out for This Summer

W

ith the warmer weather coming, focus shifts from inside to outside as people start to look at their gardens and how to maximise the space for their needs. Whether the garden is used for entertaining, family activities or just unwinding and relaxing, having a mixture of different areas is key to creating a space the whole family can enjoy.

Here, garden specialists Oeco Garden Rooms predicts some of the trends to look out for this summer and how to utilise them in your outdoor space. Garden Layout The layout of the garden is key to creating a multiple use space that family and friends can enjoy all year round. Raised flower beds and hedge rows are popular ways of adding structure to the garden, while creating selected areas for different activities; these areas can be adapted at different times of the year depending on your needs. Incorporating natural elements such rocks, boulders and bushes are also a great way to create structure while retaining a more natural look in the garden.

36 Landscape & Urban Design

Bright and bold colours

Neutral colours may be trending in the home interior scene, but in the garden it's bright and bold colours. Some great summer flowers to provide that wow factor are Gloriosa Daisy and Peonies. With its bright yellow and orange petals with a deep brown centre, Gloriosa Daisy can grow up to 3.5ft high and is perfect for the British climate. Gloriosa Daisy attracts all kinds of wildlife into the garden including butterflies, bees and even hummingbirds. Flowering between mid-spring and early summer, the fragrant Peony is available in a range of shades from white to pink and deep purple. They require very little maintenance and can live for over 100 years; the secret to having a long blossoming peony is careful planting, but once established are happy to grow undisturbed for many years. Decorating the garden Colour is not just used in the flowers of the garden - in fact one of the biggest trends this year will be colourful garden furniture and garden structures. Using pops of colour with your garden furniture will create an interesting space that will fit in with the character of the garden.

Painting or staining garden sheds and garden rooms creates a focal point in which the whole garden can be built around. While adding bright colours to garden structures help them to stand out, staining garden fences a dark colour allows the foliage to become centre stage, enhancing the natural colours of plants and flowers creating contrast throughout the space. Garden lighting LED lighting has changed the way we light our gardens forever; not only are they more efficient and last longer than traditional lighting, LED lights are now available in a range of different configurations, meaning that there is a lighting scheme for every garden. CafĂŠ lighting and extendable light chains are on trend this year, especially when lighting a patio area to create that Mediterranean feel. Solar lights are also an efficient way to light up walkways and specific areas of the garden. LED lights are now available in a range of colours and can even be controlled using a smartphone, great for adding ambience to the area when entertaining. www.oecogardenrooms.co.uk

Nobody Puts Shed in the Corner!

B

ut now sheds are becoming a stylish centrepiece and garden focal point, so many people are turning to bespoke creations. With a bespoke service, the options are endless and gardeners are given a unique creation that truly reflects their own style and personality. The Posh Shed Company and award winning garden designer, Claudia de Yong, explain how sheds are now being used as real style statements. “Gone are the days where the humble garden shed is hidden from view in the far corner of a garden, perhaps under a tree, in total darkness. With a renewed interest in making our gardens part of our extended living space, this once unloved humble utilitarian little building is being transformed and given a new lease of life,” said Claudia.

She continued: “More often than not, a garden shed these days will not simply be used for storing seeds, potting compost and garden tools. Instead, it takes pride of place, as a home office, reading room, playroom, craft room, guest room, or summerhouse, and is often now commandeered by the female of the house rather than being kept as the sanctuary of the male!” “Indeed, a garden shed now plays a more meaningful role and has become one of the main focal points in a garden, taking pride of place. Garden sheds are often furnished beautifully inside and painted in lovely soft muted colours on the outside to blend with plants, furniture or even raised beds. The range of outdoor paint shades available means that you can now make your shed even more appealing within the garden where it has become

as a piece of outdoor furniture, in its own right.” Richard Frost, CEO of The Posh Shed Company, explained how this is reflected in the creation of a Posh Shed: “We work with leading paint brands to offer our customers a full spectrum of options and colours to reflect their personal taste. Our sheds are a real talking point so our customers, quite rightly, insist on the very best in style! From pastel colours and neutral tones to be in keeping with the natural landscapes, to bright and bold pallets to complement the more flamboyant gardener – we've got it covered!” For further information about the Posh Shed Company please visit www.theposhshedcompany.co.uk

Choosing the right type of deck boards – 5 ways to get it right first time T imber decking is an increasingly popular surface used within many public spaces from walkways and bridal ways to bars and restaurants. But selecting the right type of decking depends on many different things; treatment, strength grade, profile, and slip risk. Below are some of the common considerations and how to make the right product choice.

Play it safe…

Play it safe…

Country rural = JB AntiSlip Plus® a castellated board with strips of coarse aggregate for the Anti-Slip strips (see slip risk for number of inserts).

Standard commercial slip risk = 2 Anti-Slip inserts.

Urban = JB CitiDeck® a smooth board with a less abrasive aggregate for Anti-slip strips.

Treatment and Performance

Location, location, location

Slips and Trips

Where will the deck boards be used? Country rural applications have very different requirements to deck boards for urban environments. Waterways and wetlands suit castellated boards with a high level of antislip however, these boards can be difficult to walk on in urban footwear. For urban areas where consideration is required for pushchairs, wheelchairs high heeled shoes and trip risk with changes of level a smooth nonslip board is more suitable.

What level of slip resistance is required? Will standard deck boards without any non slip performance perform in application? It’s safe to say that any commercial decking project requires some slip resistance, but how do you get the optimum performance without paying for extra protection you may not need. If you install standard boards you run the risk of having to fit antislip protection retrospectively (which is never as effective) or replace the boards completely.

44 Landscape & Urban Design

High slip risk = 3 Anti-Slip inserts.

Timber decking is preservative treated as standard but some applications require additional performance. For most applications Use Class 3 is ideal. This specification is for exterior use applications, out of ground contact. In marine environments, marinas or where there is likelihood of regular contact with water (even a hot tub would be included) it is recommended to specify Use Class 4, in ground contact. It is also essential to check the other elements of the deck. Posts are invariably in ground contact and Use Class 4 is necessary. Care must be taken with joists.

Often Use Class 3 is sufficient but where a joist is used on a balcony or flat roof it is in ground contact and Use Class 4 is required. Preferably look for a treater with WPA Benchmark accreditation. This gives assurance the product is correctly treated. Some ‘off the peg’ components may not be treated for decking applications. Where decking forms part of an exit, either a fire escape or main exit it should be treated with an exterior fire retardant. Although not classified as having preservative properties this process gives enhanced biological durability. Marley Eternit FTX Exterior Fire Retardant treated deck boards have a 30 year desired service life when used in Use Class 3 applications. (Exterior, out of ground contact). Play it safe… Above ground applications = Use Class 3. Ground/water contact = Use Class 4.

set out within BS 4978:2007+A1:2011 but how do you know which grade to use? C16 or C24? Boards graded to C16 are generally recommended for most applications and if the correct spans are used this is usually the most cost effective option that will still meet the performance requirements. You should find our article explaining the difference between C16 and C24 helpful. Most deck boards aren’t graded. Whilst failure is unlikely key areas such as deflection which consequently could cause a trip hazard (or even give the deck a ‘bouncy feel’) should be carefully considered. All recommended span tables are based on specific grades of timber.

make the deck a slip risk? It’s important to make sure that decking that will require regular cleaning is appropriate. Use a smooth board and then choose the relevant anti-slip solution (often JB CitiDeck® with a combination of smooth low and less abrasive grit.) Play it safe… Food service, event and hospitality areas = JB CitiDeck® a smooth board with a less abrasive aggregate for Anti-slip strips.

Low Maintenance Decking That Stands The Test Of Time The Design Deck range includes UPM ProFi Deck 150 which offers high impact and scratch resistance, a reversible profile, a closed surface for low maintenance and Lignin-free colour durability. Plus, it is also manufactured using more than 50% recyclable materials. Richard Mosson, James Latham’s Group Cladding and Decking Manager commented, “As the popularity of WPC decking grows in the UK, customers are looking for a premium quality product that will deliver and UPM ProFi ticks all the boxes.

J

ames Latham is seeing the popularity of its premium quality composite decking ProFi soar due to its outstanding performance properties which include minimum maintenance, superior stain resistance, extra high impact strength and a high friction surface. These impressive features mean that ProFi - which is manufactured in Finland, Germany and the United States by UPM - is perfectly suited to high traffic areas, continuing to perform to optimum levels while looking fresh, smart and clean for years to come. In addition to withstanding typical traffic usage such as the constant moving of chairs and tables, ProFi also resists staining from hazards such as cooking oil, sun lotion and drink spillage, as well as other exterior factors such as birds plus, it can endure extreme temperature changes (-40°C to +40°C) from the extreme cold, snow and ice of Northern Scandinavia to the searing heat and relentless sunshine of the Middle East. 2017 sees UPM ProFi celebrate its 10-year anniversary as one of the leading European WPC decking producers.

In that time, the boards have benefitted from continual research and development and this year, UPM are revisiting decks installed during the first years of manufacture which are still looking fresh and modern and performing well 10 years after installation. ProFi Deck comes in two stunning design styles, UPM ProFi Classic Deck and UPM ProFi Design Deck. UPM ProFi Classic Deck range offers the beauty of a hardwood deck without the high maintenance. Wood and cellulose fibres are encapsulated in specially selected polymers to provide lasting protection from the weather. The advanced composite technology provides superior resistance to UV, frost, stains and impacts when compared to traditional composite or wood decks. The UPM ProFi Design Deck range gives outdoor living a fresh and modern feel.

“With 10 years of continued investment and R&D, the quality of the UPM ProFi deck range is exceptional. Long-life and ultra-low maintenance has been engineered into the product plus, due to the innovative use of recycled materials – some of the range is made using up to 95% - it has won several international awards, with the product making a major contribution to reducing traditional landfill and incineration which is really important to James Latham as well as many of our customers.” For more information on these and Latham’s full range of products please phone 0116 257 3415, E-mail marketing@lathams.co.uk or visit www.lathamtimber.co.uk

The system allows for easy alignment of the glass during installation up to +/-15mm either way and once the two

48 Landscape & Urban Design

part clamps are installed the glass is fixed into position. Tightening is achieved via torx screws that can be tightened easily with a cordless drill - again speeding up the install time. The system includes removable covers (anodised to Marine grade 20 microns) to allow the installation of the channel without risk of damaging the finish. The natural or Satin stainless anodised covers are then simply fitted at the end of the operation. The system can also be supplied in either a base mount or side mount and in two finishes – Natural Anodised or Stainless Steel effect Anodised. Both finishes are 20 microns thick so perfect for coastal or clean room applications. A popular addition introduced to complement the system is high quality RGBW LED lighting strip. The strips can be used with either a 12v or 24v power supply and has an impressive 60 LED’s per metre. The pure white LED’s are incorporated into the colour LED’s and not set alternatively along the string and the strip is Nano coated rather than silicone offering a slimmer alternative that doesn’t discolour. It is IP68 rated for external use, comes with a 5 year warranty and can

be purchased with a range of RF remote controls if required. For full specification and video footage of the system and how it works view Barrier Components e-commerce web site at www.barrier-components.co.uk. Rainwater Management at the Centre of Spectacular Serpentine Pavilion

V

isitors to the stunning 2017 Serpentine Pavilion in London’s Kensington Gardens will enjoy its spectacular effects unaware of the below ground water management solution right at its heart, provided by the sustainable drainage market-leader SDS. A dramatic rainwater cascade from the Pavilion’s arching tree-like roof canopy is a central feature of this year’s design by the award-winning Burkina Faso architect Diébédo Francis Kéré, which opens to the public on 23 June. The British climate and London’s everchanging weather patterns influenced Kéré’s creative interpretation of the Serpentine Galleries’ annual commission for a temporary pavilion, as a focal point for one of the top ten most visited architectural design exhibitions in the world.

50 Landscape & Urban Design

Rain Collection “At the centre of the Pavilion is a large opening in the canopy, creating an immediate connection with nature. In times of rain, the roof becomes a funnel channelling water into the heart of the structure. This rain collection acts symbolically, highlighting water as a fundamental resource for human survival,” explains Kéré. During peak summer storms, rainwater is designed to run off the Pavilion’s expansive roof into an open central courtyard, so an underground attenuation solution using GEOlight® geocellular storage from SDS was designed by the engineering project team from AECOM. The roof canopy is supported by a central steel framework and covered with a transparent twin-wall polycarbonate skin. With the roof pitch varying between 5°

and 9°, the rainwater is conveyed quickly through a funnel before dropping into the centre of the courtyard.

Underground Storage The water cascades down from the roof onto a publicly-accessible, ellipticalshaped 21m2 area of 130mm-deep cream-coloured granular stone, before being conveyed to the GEOlight® storage tank beneath. The underground storage is designed to hold back up to 6,000 litres of water, sufficient to protect against a 1 in 100 year rainfall event. Water is then gravity-fed slowly away via two surface water pipes to an existing soakaway. AECOM has provided technical advisory services for the Serpentine Pavilion project for the past five years. Principal Engineer, Michael Orr explains: “This is the first time in recent years that a positive drainage design has been required for the

Pavilion, as this time rainwater is part of the architectural concept and is featured by being directed into the centre of the structure. “The architect’s tree-like concept is interpreted by central steel roof supports which required a strong reinforced concrete raft foundation. Also considering the clay ground conditions, it was necessary to design a central attenuation tank to capture rainwater and take it away from the foundations, allowing it to infiltrate slowly into the park’s existing soakaway system. “GEOlight® geocellular storage from SDS was the obvious choice for the water management solution designed by Ulrich Groenewald of the engineering project team from AECOM, in coordination with SDS. We were able to work with the architect to deliver a drainage design that

satisfied regulations and reflected our analysis of what rainfall we might expect in the park during the summer months. Now all we need to do is wait for it to rain!”

public space is central to Francis Kéré’s wonderful design. As is so often the case, it’s the engineering behind the scenes which has enabled a sustainable drainage concept to be realised.

Community Hub

“As the public visit the Pavilion this year to try the café, take part in the activities and summer parties, little will they know that the water management under their feet is helping to make it all possible.”

The Serpentine Pavilion is used as a community hub and café by day and a forum for learning, debate and entertainment by night. Every year the Pavilion is sited on the Serpentine Gallery’s lawn for four months. SDS Limited was delighted to provide 6m3 of GEOlight® geocellular storage for the project, says Sales and Marketing Director Richard Averley: “SDS is honoured to have played our part in this prestigious project for the Serpentine Galleries. The relationship between nature, architecture and

BSW Taps in to Domestic Acoustic Fence Panel Market

B

SW Timber Group, the UK's largest fully-integrated forestry company, has just unveiled a brand new domestic acoustic fence panel system.

The lightweight panels are installed as modules for convenience and can even fit between existing posts, which makes it easy to replace old fence panels if you want to give your garden a fresher look.

As living areas across the country continue to get smaller, many people now look to their gardens for a bit more space – but noise pollution is an increasing concern.

Horizontal fence boards ensure that the modular panels blend into one another seamlessly and utilising both sides of the panel creates a run that is aesthetically attractive from any angle.

Using their expertise in developing noisereducing fence panels for motorways across the UK, BSW has developed Soundshield™ in a bid to curb noise pollution in residential environments. The cost-effective solution has been proven to reduce noise levels by 22 decibels in independent laboratory tests.

52 Landscape & Urban Design

Soundshield™ fence panels use timber from responsibly managed forests and are the latest investment from a company which continues to demonstrate its commitment to the UK fencing sector. David Chapman, Sales and Marketing Director for BSW Timber, said: “We recognise that this is a fast-growing

market and that there is a requirement for these products across the UK as people re-evaluate their living spaces. “Progress in technology is to be welcomed and most residents these days like a bit more peace and quiet. We feel we have designed and invested in a product which will not only enhance the look of gardens but also reduce noise levels coming from external sources. “We've worked hard to design a system that looks great in any environment but one that can be installed by anyone in only a few steps.” Soundshield™ product information is available to download from www.bsw.co.uk

Cotswold Hill Stone & Masonry Ltd Cotswold Hill Stone & Masonry Ltd., based at Cotswold Hill Quarry near Ford, Cheltenham has, produced high quality building, landscaping and masonry stone for 35 years. In 2014 Cotswold Hill Stone & Masonry took over Birch Hill Quarry, situated deep in the Royal Forest of Dean. This quarry produces Pennant sandstone, renowned for its excellent characteristics of weather resistance and strength. It is sought after by landscape architects and garden designers for water features and rockery projects due to its attractiveness and robust nature. This stone has starred in award-winning displays at both Malvern Spring Show and Chelsea Flower Show where it has been displayed in its natural form, sitting harmoniously with freshly sawn paving. The monumental megalith Pennant sandstone is popular for its striking appearance, weathered over many years and aged with lichen and moss. In contrast the newly dug stone shows its natural charm with strikes of blue, grey and red.

The stone extracted from the Cotswold Hill Stone & Masonry quarry is from the Guiting Group of sedimentary limestones and is available in honey and cream colours. It is suitable for many applications including walling, building, and masonry. The building stone has been used in many prestigious locations for both conservation and renovation. Cotswold Hill Stone and Masonry are proud that their work graces such eminent buildings as the Houses of Parliament, Hampton Court Palace, Blenheim Palace, Magdalen Bridge, Oxford colleges and Alexandra Palace. Summer Garden Lighting Trends & Tips D

uring the warm summer evenings and nights, we Brits like to make the most of the weather, staying out until long beyond sunset with tables packed full of salads and BBQ goodies. While the weather's right, we want to spend as much time as possible in our gardens; designing your lighting to create an atmospheric space that both relaxes and impresses is very important for when the sun goes down. Indoor and outdoor lighting company, Festive Lights, have produced a list of garden lighting trends and tips for summer 2017 to see you through to the first frost. Bring the inside out It's always been about bringing the outside in, but how about changing things up this summer and

making your garden an extension of your indoor living space? Hygge was all the rage this winter – making your interiors warm and snug. Whilst it's more difficult to make exterior spaces cosy and inviting, due to being wide open, using the right furniture, accessories and lighting can create an alluring ambience. Fairy lights and festoon lighting are key features in making your garden space more enticing this season. They perfectly illuminate any space, not giving off a stark and bright light, but a soft warm glow. Wrap string lights around trees or drape along fences, or string festoon lights across open areas to create a cosy cafÊ atmosphere.

Lanterns, whether Moroccan style, lit by wax or LED candles, or even colourful hanging lanterns on string lights, have proved very popular throughout the winter, a trend which will continue into the summer; able to be taken out onto patios and lawned areas for a decorative feature that will not only brighten the space but will be a fantastic talking point. Garden rugs and throws have been a popular trend on sites like Pinterest recently. These are perfect for when the evening turns to night and it starts to get a little chilly. Enhance features Every garden needs a focal point, whether that's a vast tree, an interesting rockery, or even the brick face of a building.

The way to really bring your garden together is to enhance that key feature using strategic lighting. With well-placed lighting, you can accentuate the parts of your garden that give it character whilst drawing it all together seamlessly. Highlight borders Borders are often forgotten, seeming old fashioned and out of date now, but drawing attention to them can create a comprehensive scheme to your modern garden. You can create this effect by installing strips of waterproof LED rope lighting around the bottom edge of your border. This also makes a great statement for any patios, decking or terraced areas too, to illuminate pathways as well as creating a feature.

Solar lighting In a similar way to highlighting borders and pathways, solar lights are a fantastic option for lighting that can act as both functional and decorative. Not only are they far more energy efficient, saving you money in the long run, but they're also easy to install and can be left in place for a long time. Layer your lighting We've all heard about layering our clothes in winter, but any interior designer or garden landscaper can talk for hours on the importance of layers in your garden. Bringing together all the above ideas in a thoughtful and well-planned way will allow you to carefully manipulate the atmosphere in your outdoor space.

Make sure to create contrast between light and dark to define wide spaces or give the illusion of more space with reflective elements in small gardens. Draw attention to texture on the ground with low level cross lighting, combine it with uplights and downlights on features, define pathways and borders with strip LEDs, then give the space some ambience with fairy lights, lanterns and candles. Be careful to keep balance in your garden though, you don't want to be lit up like Blackpool illuminations!

Hardscape paves the way for Kidderminster public realm makeover Kidderminster town centre’s public realm has undergone a dramatic transformation with a £2 million project to revitalise the pedestrianised retail streets and create two striking public squares. Hardscape worked alongside IBI Group and Wyre Forest District Council to bring the designs for the ambitious regeneration project to life with a paving scheme reflecting an iconic stamp.

fan pattern created a striking colour contrast, picking out some of the stamps detailing.

The scheme was a catalyst for the regeneration of the pedestrianised shopping district, which in recent years had struggled to keep pace with the adjacent retail development at Weaver’s Wharf.

The re-surfacing of the pedestrian retail streets as well as the re-configuration of a key highway route through the town centre was also a key part of the project.

Phase one consisted of the creation of two public squares, including Exchange Place, which was designed around the form of the Penny Black postage stamp to honour Roland Hill, a local philanthropist who founded the modern postal system and whose statue stands tall in the centre of the square. The shape of the square was based on the relative dimensions of the stamp and Crystal Black granite was chosen as the main paving material due to its durability, making it ideal for high footfall areas. Royal White granite setts laid in a Bogen

60 Landscape & Urban Design

Originally a traffic heavy junction, the area was transformed into a pedestrian friendly public space that has redefined the beautiful Grade II listed Town Hall building, which overlooks the square, as the traditional heart of the town centre.

A gold, silver and bronze colour palette was used by Hardscape throughout. This was achieved using natural stone in the form of black and white granites, Tower sandstone as the ‘gold’ standard materials in the main squares and with the Kellen Breccia Tagenta range as the ‘silver’ standard for the retail streets and highway route footpaths. Hardscape worked closely with the client team to help fulfil the brief to the finest detail. Councillor Tracey Onslow, Wyre Forest District Council cabinet member for planning and economic regeneration, summarised: “As part of the public realm regeneration development, feedback from residents reflected our aspiration to

highlight Kidderminster’s heritage, so this formed part of the brief to the designers. We felt that designing the Penny Black imagery into the new paving was a striking and lasting way of paying tribute to Sir Rowland Hill and his contribution to our postal system.” With over ‘20 years’ experience’, technical expertise and range of ethically sourced hard landscaping materials, Hardscape provides inspiration for landscape architects for the urban landscape. Schemes like Kidderminster demonstrate the exciting possibilities in paving that can be created to provide public realm spaces that people can enjoy for years to come. Oakley Most people involved in the garden business, whether designers, hard landscapers or those who select plants and flowers, have at heart a desire to make the world a better place, on however modest a scale.

W

e always want to leave a site with the feeling that we have enhanced its character in harmony with its surroundings, and have taken account of its broader impact on the environment. That’s why we were thrilled when the Royal Horticultural Society asked us to build a drive for them for their project Greening Grey Britain. The RHS are trying to persuade members of the public to grow plants wherever they can in urban settings, to help the environment. Everyone is encouraged to avoid just paving over front gardens to accommodate off-street parking and to think about the wider possibilities. It’s surprisingly easy to make driveways more attractive into

62 Landscape & Urban Design

the bargain. Wherever possible we should all add plants to a drive, or place them in plant containers if you have nowhere else to put them. An existing drive was chosen in Greenford, which is in the London Borough of Ealing , because Ealing Local Agenda 21 was very involved with the project. The drive was designed by Caro Garden Design

The chosen drive is 5 x 8m and it’s possible to park two cars on it. It has been re-designed flexibly so that it’s possible for others to use the whole plan including the plants or adapt it so that elements can be chosen from it that work for them. We came in and removed the existing block paving and concrete base. A new permeable base was put down

Oakley Landscapes Ltd text Oakley Landscapes Ltd

and we then laid Park Pave plastic trays and filled them with gravel. This is to allow the water to run through into the ground and avoid flooding. There are of course many different coloured types of gravel on the market which create all sorts of options to fit different settings harmoniously. The new paving was artfully spaced such that the wheels of the cars can easily avoid running over and crushing the plants. The sidewall was removed and a Viburnum tinus hedge planted in its place. As there was little room for plants a trellis was fitted to the wall of the house and along the neighbour’s boundary wall for plants to grow up it.

Any spare space at the base of the house and around the edge was planted. The base of house wall and the side boundary were very dry so plants that can cope with those conditions were selected. With advice from the RHS low growing plants that would survive under a car were planted. Wherever we could position plants, we did so, without ever looking over-stuffed or excessive.

photo Oakley Landscapes Ltd

The RHS wants to show how easy it is to create a low maintenance drive that looks good with plants where you’re still able to park two cars. We were all delighted with the results, reflecting to ourselves how much more attractive and more pleasant it now looks compared to the original, banal, block paving drive. And above all, all those plants do their bit to help offset air pollution and other ecological damage to the wider environment. www.oakleylandscapes.co.uk

Danish pupils enjoy brand new interactive playground designed by VEGA Landskab Located in the Rebild Municipality, northern Denmark, Skørping School has created an interactive playground made from sustainable Kebony wood.

T

he project was selected as one of the winners in a campaign by Danish Realdania, with an emphasis on encouraging the students to be more energetic, particularly those who normally lead less active lives. The venture, headed up by Danish landscape architect firm VEGA Landskab, perfectly complements the natural setting of Skørping School, encouraging participation and learning amongst students and

66 Landscape & Urban Design

the local community through an active interaction with nature. During the planning process, a thorough consultation was conducted, with members of the community, staff and pupils of the school, and a number of local stakeholders invited to discuss various aspects of the project based on their interests and the functions they needed in their everyday life in order to make the playground attractive to both the students and the local community around it.

Kebony

The playground encompasses three distinct elements – at the forest edge a dedicated zone unites the transition from schoolyard to forest, the overgrown plants and weeds were cut back and new plants are added. A ‘forest loop’ runs through the playground, comprising a raised wooden walkway made from Kebony which weaves along the schoolyard and into the woods. Incorporating various activities along its route, the path includes a balance beam, ladders, benches and a treetop house. Bordered by this forest loop is an area dedicated to communal recreational activities, including basketball courts, swings, picnic tables and a skate park for students of all age groups to enjoy. Kebony was selected for the ‘forest loop’ walkway due to its hard wearing qualities that can withstand exposure to the elements without splintering, making it a safe and fit for purpose wood, suitable for use in a playground. The patented Kebony technology is an environmentally friendly process, which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol - an agricultural by-product.

hardness and dimensional stability, without the need for tropical deforestation. This made it the perfect material for the walkway, which will be exposed to the elements all year round.

Beyond structural qualities, Skørping School was keen to ensure that the wood used was sustainably sourced, as one of primary motivations for the project was to encourage interaction and appreciation of the surrounding woodland.

By polymerising the wood’s cell wall, the softwoods permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood including high durability,

The Kebony technology lowers demand for tropical hardwoods by providing an alternative timber with comparable performance qualities, which can be grown sustainably. Anne Galmar, Landscape Architect and Partner at VEGA

Landskab commented: “We are very happy about the success of this project as we see the kids just love it, using the loop exactly as we imagined. The Kebony wood fits beautifully into the surroundings, both the natural setting of the forest and the

more urban parts with the Skate Park and areas for ball games. We have already used Kebony for Vestvolden playground (built in 2012), so we can see the nice way it weathers, and appreciate that it is safe and toxin-free for the kids.”

Mona Gøtske, Sales Manager at Kebony said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this latest project; all three aspects of the new playground are of the highest quality design and will be a fantastic addition to this school.” www.kebony.com

The Wearable Technology Revolution in Working Clothes Snickers WorkTrousers are now getting even ‘Smarter’

has been continually addressing with its patented KneeGuard System.

Snickers Workwear has always been renowned for its modern designs, innovative functionality and marketleading fabric technology.

Clark says, “The study shows that 6 out of 10 craftsmen are suffering from pain in their knees. So, we see that there is definitely room for improving their wellbeing beyond just knee protection and our ‘Smart Workwear’ is one way”.

Now its WorkTrousers are getting even ‘smarter’ with the integration of technology to improve performance and wellbeing at work. Wearable Technology is already woven into our daily lives through smartphones, fitness devices, sports clothing and accessories - to help monitor and improve performance. A recent study carried out in Scandinavia* showed more than 50% of the professional craftsmen there are cutting corners at work and don´t use the available health and safety equipment as they should. David Clark, managing director of the Hultafors Group UK says, “Our experience is that craftsmen usually are so focused on getting the job done that personal protection tends to be overlooked”. But repeated ‘corner cutting’ over the years definitely creates a long-term health problem – an issue that Snickers Workwear

‘Tracker 1’ is Snickers’ first prototype of wearable technology, a chip fitted to a pair of WorkTrousers enabling the user to monitor work place noise levels, heat conditions and knee impact. Clark goes on to say, “Market-leading technology and innovation have long been hallmarks of Snickers Workwear. We are well known for our KneeGuard System, 37.5 Fabric Technology and technical functionality, but the integration of ‘smart’ wearable technology into our clothing shows the extent to which we are looking at working clothes and wellbeing on site in a completely new way”. Mind Trap Sponsored By Idverde Raises Funds For Charities

T

he RHS Chelsea Gold medal winning garden, Mind Trap sponsored by idverde raised £838 for charities that help people in tough times. Plants from the garden were sold off at the end of the show raising funds that will be shared between charities Perennial, Inspire and the Heads Together campaign. Mind Trap, designed by Northern Irish designer Ian Price and sponsored by green services provider idverde, represented what it is like to struggle with depression and aimed to draw attention to mental health issues. Appearing in the Fresh Garden category, the garden received a great response from visitors, as well as a top medal from the RHS judges. The charities supported by the garden all highlight the fact that when life gets tough, it is often mental health that suffers. Perennial is the only UK charity that exists to help horticulturists and their families during their most difficult times and support them as they rebuild their lives. The Heads Together campaign brings together eight mental health charities with The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to end stigma and change the conversation on mental health. Inspire

is a Northern Irish charity focussed on promoting wellbeing for all.

Nick Temple-Heald, CEO of idverde UK comments: “As Europe’s leading green services provider, working in some of the UK’s most beloved green spaces, we know how important the green environment is to mental and social health and wellbeing. When we found out about Ian’s ‘Mind Trap’ concept, we instantly recognised it as an effective way to raise awareness for mental health issues, but also for the important role that our nation’s green spaces play in the maintenance of good mental health. “As a large employer, we know that these issues will affect a number of our team members and the communities we serve, so we also want to show our support for the organisations that can provide support and assistance when people are in need. Charities such as Perennial and Inspire, plus the highly-publicised Heads Together campaign, all show people that there is help available when life gets tough and that it’s OK, not to be OK, which is the central message of Mind Trap.”

Anita Bates, Director of Marketing and Development at Perennial comments: “When people face difficulties in life,

it is not just the financial and practical effects, it almost always takes its toll both mentally and emotionally. Our Caseworkers help clients with all aspects of getting their lives back on track and mental wellbeing is a huge part of that. The Mind Trap garden was testament to the skill and hard work of the many wonderful people working in the horticulture industry, as well as being a great opportunity to raise awareness of our services. We want everyone in the industry to know that we are there to support them, should they ever need it.” As the most high profile events in the industry, the RHS flower shows are a valuable platform for raising awareness among the horticulture industry and the garden-loving public. Following on from the success of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Perennial will be exhibiting at the upcoming RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show with the Perennial Sanctuary Garden, designed by Tom Massey. The garden is spiral design, with a changing colour planting palette to represent the journey a Perennial client makes as they move from the chaos of their personal circumstances to safety with Perennial’s help. www.perennial.org.uk

A new Landscape for the New Hydropower Plant Hagneck in Switzerland Raymond Vogel Landschaften AG full of suspense between extensively and intensively used and maintained environments. The main focus is on the modeling of the terrain, the spacial sequence of the woods and the views in the landscape near the lake. The greater meaning of the new weir system is its influence to the landscape of the Lake of Biel. The vastness of the water surface allows a great impression of the St. Peter’s Island, the vineyards of the left lakeside and the mountain Chasseral. One goal of the competition team was the low and compact appearance of the hydropower plant. Thus the building is excellently embedded in the context of the landscape.

W

inner of American Architecture Prize 2016, Raymond Vogel Landschaften AG designed and constructed a completely new landscape around the new Hydropower Plant in Hagneck, Lake of Biel/Switzerland. Historical context The Aare Channel at the Lake of Biel / Switzerland is a very specific landscape, historically important and forwardlooking. About 130 years ago the first Jura Water Correctionbrought the precondition for a new delta of the river Aare at the lake of Biel. The aim of this huge project was the gain of fertile soil around the three lakes in this area. An important part of this work was the construction of new channels, one of them is the Hagneck channel that detours the river Aare into the Lake of Biel. The enormous efforts shaped the form of the landscape fundamentally and built an overall appearance of the locality of national importance. The Project Away from settlements and traffic, behind the molasse hill lays the Hagneck delta with the hydropower plant in the natural

landscape. The historically significant place at the lake of Biel is now being adapted to current requirements, the old overgrown cultural landscape is being enhanced and the existing qualities taken care of.

The project is one of the first contemporary examples in Switzerland how the landscape of infrastructure facilities is becoming a landscape park for recreation. In this way this project exemplifies the future landscape development in densely populated areas and countries.

This context is the foundation for the design concept. Nature and landscape are configured and structured in the sense of a landscape park.

There is no separation between man and nature, as man is a part of nature. Sometimes, human beings use their free will to choose separation from nature.

Nature protection areas, nature preservation areas, recreation areas and working areas build sequences

This is the attitude behind this project, reflected in the respectful and sensitive design of the new landscape. Life quality

is not a «time-and-money-thing», Life quality is always present when we as human beings stay present, with open senses and realizing the connection.

the Swiss Foundation for Landscape Conservation / Umsicht Regards Sguardi 2017 from the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects SIA.

The art of Landscape Architecture is to design landscapes that support revealing the human naturalness of being connected, that support the memory of being at home on this planet. Like this, taking care for nature becomes a completely natural part of human behavior.

The rise of the ’Terrennial’ – millennials are getting green-fingered in the name of wellbeing A barbecue was top of their wish list, followed by outdoor furniture, a treehouse, a hot tub, a swing and a pool. Although all age groups agreed that they wanted a space that could be enjoyed by the entire family. Sophie Rowe, PR Executive from Marshalls said: “Gardens have always been a place where we go to get away from it all, so it makes sense that younger people are making the most of their green spaces.

S

urvey unearths fact that young people are finding peace in their gardens and spending more than the over 55s on their green spaces

A third of young people aged between 16 and 30 are getting into gardening – with many citing wellbeing as a reason to reach for their trowels. A new study of 1,200 people in the UK by landscaping specialist Marshalls has found that 25% of millennials believe that gardening offers them a greater sense of wellbeing, and over a third (35%) said that just by owning a garden they feel better in themselves. In addition, a third of young parents said it was important for their child's wellbeing to spend time in the garden. The research also discovered that millennials are spending an average of £215.92 each per year on their gardens – more than the

78 Landscape & Urban Design

£193.27 spent on average by over 55s. This cost includes decorations, plants, general upkeep and garden parties. These findings highlight a recent trend in younger people enjoying more relaxed leisure pursuits, which is reinforced by the fact that one in seven (15%) revealed in the survey that they would rather spend time in the garden than partying. On average, millennials are spending at least one hour in their gardens every week, with more than a quarter (28%) growing their own fruit and vegetables, and 16% of those that do feeling happier for it. When it comes to the perfect garden, millennials have their own ideas that are a little different to the more traditional fare.

It's interesting to see that younger people are actually spending more than the over 55s – the demographic who are most associated with gardening. This could be for a number of reasons, such as spending more time socialising in the garden with friends. “There is certainly a trend towards mindfulness, particularly with the younger generation. You see people using colouring books on the Tube and more people taking digital detoxes where they switch off from social media, so it's easy to see why the garden is attractive to those who want to de-stress and get away from their screens. “A lot of people might think that you need a big blossoming garden to get the most out of it, but the majority of people we surveyed had low maintenance gardens. These tend to strike a balance between having a space where you can relax and a garden that doesn't need a lot of upkeep – perfect for busy young professionals in urban areas.”

Mashambas Skyscraper Award-Winning Educational Center in Africa. eVolo Skyscraper Competition 2017

A

n area of cultivated ground; a plot of land, a small subsistence farm for growing crops and fruitbearing trees, often including the dwelling of the farmer. Over the last 30 years, worldwide absolute poverty has fallen sharply (from about 40% to under 20%). But in African countries, the percentage has barely fallen. Still today, over 40% of people living in sub-Saharan Africa live in absolute poverty. More than half of them have something in common: they're small farmers. Despite several attempts, the green revolution’s mix of fertilizers, irrigation, and high-yield seeds—which more than doubled global grain production between 1960 and 2000—never blossomed in Africa, thanks to the poor infrastructure, limited markets, weak governance, and fratricidal civil wars that wracked the postcolonial continent.

80 Landscape & Urban Design

The goal of the project is to bring this green revolution to the poorest people. Giving training, fertilizer, and seeds to the small farmers can give them an opportunity to produce as much per acre as huge modern farms. When farmers improve their harvests, they pull themselves out of poverty. They also start producing surplus food for their neighbors. When farmers prosper, they eradicate poverty and hunger in their communities. Mashambas is a movable educational center, which emerges in the poorest areas of the continent. It provides education, training on agricultural techniques, cheap fertilizers, and modern tools, it also creates a local trading area which maximizes profits from harvest sales. Agriculture around the building flourishes and the knowledge spreads towards the horizon.

The structure is growing as long as the number of participants is rising. When the local community becomes self-sufficient it is transported to other places. The structure is made with simple modular elements, it makes it easy to construct, deconstruct and transport. Modules placed one on the other create the high-rise, which is a form that takes the smallest as possible amount of space from local farmers. Today hunger and poverty may be only African matter, but the world’s population will likely reach nine billion by 2050, scientists warn that this would result in global food shortage. Africa’s fertile farmland could not only feed its own growing population, it could also feed the whole world.
