High Viscosity liquids often cause difficulty in transfer applications. They do not flow under gravity, require a specialist pump technology which if used can also pose issues if ran without fluid and be easily damaged.

6 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk

The Problem with High Viscosity Liquids

Such fluids are sometimes so thick that when delivered in barrels or containers, if the incorrect pump technology is chosen, fluid is not pumped - holes are made with the pump within the container of fluid, rather than it being completely emptied, with large amounts of product remaining. Not only is product within the centre of containers a cause for concern but also fluids which may remain stuck to the side of the container and the amount of wastage this can generate, in particular with more expensive fluids, or those which must be disposed of via waste collection. So when looking to scale production or conduct trials what factors should be considered?

you trying to ensure accurate, repeatable traceable results and avoid transferring fluids manually, but also ensure any technology selected will stand the test of time and make certain cross contamination does not skew results.

Production for Startup’s

Beginning production of a new formulation, batch or innovative liquid product, can often bring about difficulties. Knowing which pump technology to use to ensure a safe, efficient process, but provide the flexibility for small scale batches, whilst undertaking refinements prior to commercialization can prove

One of the ways North Ridge Pumps recently helped a client looking to scale production and perform trials was an innovator within the supplement industry. They were looking to transfer one of several blends of chemicals which were highly viscous, would not flow under gravity and they wanted to consistently batch set amounts.

Notchallenging.onlyare

Accuracy & Repeatability of Results – The ability to repeatedly batch preset amounts with ease, or record the amounts dispensed with high accuracy ensuring consistency.

Therepeatedly.unitwas supplied complete with heat traced hose to ensure the liquid did not solidify in the hose, with the barrel also heat traced to ensure the contents remained liquid and pumpable. As the fluid was heated, it became easily pumpable

One of the ways avoiding many of the pitfalls during commercialization of fluid process or fluid handling products is to work with a partner who can specify the right pump technology for your process.

Considerations When Scaling Production -

Solid Handling - When solids are transferred careful consideration needs to be given to the way they are handled. They can be transferred with technologies preserving their shape and consistency, or with designs which can assist with the next stage of production with solids broken down, or partially blended.

Sensitivity to Shear - Some fluids may be shear sensitive meaning they must be handled gently to avoid them being changed during transfer, or can become thicker when pumped.

5

Accreditation - Material choice can be puzzling. Whether to adopt an accredited hygienic design, or simply a stainless steel design which can be easily disassembled and cleaned providing peace of mind during testing to simply what is chemically resistant.

In this project North Ridge were tasked with assisting a client dispensing a product being developed which had the consistency of molten fat. When cold, the product would solidify making it unpumpable, and near on impossible to remove from the container.

Volatile & Corrosive liquids - Volatile and corrosive liquid handling is another consideration such as whether an ATEX design is required or seal less construction to ensure the full containment of fluids.

The equipment needed to be hygienic, easily cleanable and handle a wide temperature range, yet consistently transfer differing volumes of liquid as accurately as possible. North Ridge supplied, commissioned and installed a complete automatic batching system to dispense the liquid accurately and

Other options include the swaging of hose fittings for the safety and security of leak free connections, nozzles for ease of fluid dispensing and speed control to alter dispensing rate and prevent splashing.

Twenty years later the Little Plumber range now consists of both domestic and commercial units, and these are all made by hand in a dedicated factory in Ceredigion, Wales. The cost of energy is soaring and the one thing no industry wants is to add to the already rising costs involved in water heating with the additional burden of Limescale which can add up to 70% of overall energy costs in areas with hard Fromwater.dishwashers to steam ovens, from cooling towers and compressors, catering equipment and whole buildings, all will benefit from running more efficiently with the installation of a Little Plumber unit.

Added benefits are that the water feels and tastes softer so instead of an expensive ion-exchange or reverse osmosis unit a huge overall benefit can be achieved for minute running costs.

From dishwashers to steam ovens, from cooling towers and compressors, catering equipment and whole buildings, all will benefit from running more efficiently with the installation of a Little Plumber unit.

Not wanting to return to employing hundreds of staff as he once did, Gavin started a small on-line Mail Order Company called Splendid Products Ltd and created the brand Little Plumber.

The new LPooo range is the very latest in the treatment of water minerals using low frequency radio waves. Once considered to be “snake-oil” technology the thousands of users can now testify to the efficacy of the product. The latest range now employs a 5v USB input in all models so you can basically use your standard phone-charger as a power source although mains adapters are provided with every unit.

Introducing the Bactiscope™

The team at EIT International, along with our product partners around the world, are delighted to announce the release to market of the Bactiscope™, the latest technological development of investigative cameras specifically designed for the detection of bacteria and biofilms in pipework and other awkward to access areas within production lines and processing facilities. Like its companion products, Bactiscan™ and BactiscanPRO™, the Bactiscope™ uses environmentally friendly and safe to handle wave-alternating UV light sources to instantaneously identify areas harbouring bacterial contaminants. The Bactiscope™ is a miniature camera, or probe with an external diameter of 37mm on a flexible cable (in length options of 1m, 2m or 5m) housed in its own portable carry case which also holds the video screen. The real-time video feed allows you to see a close-up, live view of inspection areas. The probe and cable allow it to be manoeuvred into awkward areas such as pipework, behind or above hard-to-reach spaces, giving you the freedom to inspect and investigate sections of processing lines and facilities that would normally be inaccessible for standard cleaning and inspection Foodprotocols.andbeverage production or storage facilities, as well as retail stores, food courts and other food serving businesses that produce fresh and cooked foods in-house, are required to follow stringent health and safety guidelines/legislation for public, processor and environmental health purposes. Most use adenosine triphosphate (ATP) tests for measuring actively growing microorganisms and determining whether there are hazardous contaminants present in the samples. Whilst this process is good, it is not fool-proof due to the size of physical swab point compared to overall volume of surface that can be harbour bacteria and biofilms, in addition, the physical swab procedure is cumbersome, so focus is often given to high touchpoint areas that are normally easy to access. Often though, there will also be pipework and/ or processing zones where effective cleaning, inspection and testing can be more difficult to execute due to access restrictions. With Bactiscope™ you can illuminate the entire internal surface of a section of pipe or under and food prep station for example and receive an immediate result; within seconds you can accurately detect contamination sites for ATP swab testing and remedial works to be conducted as required.

Production & Facilities Managers are relied upon to make a critical decision every day; namely whether to start processing and production runs or not. For each hour on hold for cleaning or investigations, any potential revenue is lost. If the production line is conducted incorporating a piping process or has a processing surface that has not been adequately cleaned, the risk of contamination and costly recalls (or worse) increases dramatically. Complementing cleaning protocols with the Bactiscope™ could allow cleaning to be more efficient and for more targeted ATP swab testing. This in turn, would provide an increased level of confidence that your facility is operating in compliance to inspection and cleaning protocols and industry legislative demands and reduce overhead costs as the swab tests will be carried out on the identified contaminant site, removing the need for costly “blind” ATP swab testing which is conducted on an educated guess basis when selecting sample sites. Many of the world’s leading companies are currently using the EIT International product offerings for quality adherence and legislative compliance. For further information on Bactiscope™, please contact your regional EIT International product partner from the list in our contact page www.eit-international.com

The role of Norelem’s Hygienic DESIGN standard components

Building a safe and efficient future for the Food & Drink Manufacturing Industry

In a post-pandemic world, we are as hygiene conscious as ever before. One of the industries championing hygiene is Food & Drink manufacturing and today it is more important than ever to uphold this renewed focus on hygiene. In this feature, Marcus Schneck, CEO of norelem, looks at how norelem’s range of Hygienic DESIGN products offer several benefits to Food & Drink Theremanufacturers.hasbeen a newly refreshed focus on people’s health over the past two years, with one result being a clamping down on regulations in the Food & Drink manufacturing industry. Due to these tighter regulations every element in Food & Drink manufacture is being looked at with a much closer lens, from everything including best practices in Health & Safety to the implementation of higher quality materials. While these regulations certainly make things safer for consumers, actually adapting to these regulations can be a challenge for manufacturers, from both an execution and cost perspective. For some having to replace many elements of a manufacturing system at once seems like a big hill to climb as bespoke components are expensive and can take a long time in the order and delivery process. This is where norelem’s Hygienic DESIGN standard components offer an advantageous solution.

In addition, the Hygienic DESIGN standard components guarantee minimal contamination from harmful microorganisms that cause illness or degrade product quality, as well as allergens, across production lines –and now more than ever is it critical that safety standards are being met, especially with the increasing need for food production, as well as the world’s renewed focus on health and safety. These product specifications are all striving for reductions in maintenance time, and a cleaner, safer manufacturing space, ensuring a prolonged lifetime of the machinery overall.

If you would like to find out more about norelem’s Hygienic DESIGN standard components, please visit www.norelem.co.uk

Through the reductions in downtime and maintenance time that the products offer, the Food & Drink manufacturing industry will be able to operate more efficiently in the future.

The benefits of using standard components rather than bespoke components in Food & Drink manufacturing are numerous. What will probably be most appealing to manufacturers is the reduction in costs and design time. A bespoke system is of course made to order and has a high cost associated with it, whereas standard components are high in stock and have short delivery times. In addition, standard components have guaranteed functions and a compiled number of special design properties such as radii and surfaces. But, arguably the most beneficial is that standard components can be quickly and easily exchanged in case of the need for repair, whereas a bespoke system would have to be reordered, and operations would have to be put on hold.

When it comes to designing and choosing Hygienic DESIGN products, engineers and manufacturers must take the current guidelines into consideration as well as any outside influences, such as contact with aggressive media, or the temperature range the products can norelem’swithstand.Hygienic DESIGN standard components play an essential role in upholding the safety standards of the Food & Drink manufacturing industry. It is through the reductions in downtime and maintenance time that they make the industry more efficient and through the products extended lifetime, that they make it more sustainable. With more strain being put on manufacturing than ever before, pioneering and facilitating the future of the Food & Drink manufacturing industry through product innovation is one role that norelem are extremely proud to play.

FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk 13

The stricter guidelines for food manufacturing as well as the products innate benefits have made for an increased demand for Hygienic DESIGN products from manufacturers. As well as implementing classic standard components like clamping levers or indexing plungers, manufacturers are already implementing Hygienic DESIGN products like screws, nuts, and levelling feet, to connect machine parts together. As guidelines become stricter, changes to the technology are going to be required, which is why norelem are working continuously to expand the Hygienic DESIGN range over the coming years.

THE BENEFITS OF HYGIENIC DESIGN STANDARD COMPONENTS

norelem’s Hygienic DESIGN range of standard components, such as the A4 quality stainless steel products, can deliver the highest hygiene standards while increasing manufacturing efficiencies. The material’s used to make the components give them a longer lifetime. In addition, the products are designed with special radii, transitions, bevels, and surfaces designed to prevent wetting – they are therefore easy to clean, if they need to be cleaned at all.

WHY MANUFACTURERS LOVE S TANDARD COMPONENTS

Being able to uphold the safety standards of the food and beverage manufacturing industry is imperative to its success. With a growing need for Food & Drink manufacture, being able to facilitate and drive innovation in the safety standards of this industry is one of the key benefits of the Hygienic DESIGN standard components.

In addition to the reduction in maintenance and down time, which makes for more economical products, the response to these regulations is in turn making the Food & Drink manufacturing industry safer. For example, through visually detectable plastics, contaminated food can be identified quicker. But also, the contamination of food can be prevented from occurring at the source.

WHERE AND WHY SHOULD HYGIENIC DESIGN PRODUCTS BE IMPLEMENTED?

The entire Hygienic DESIGN product range can be found in the 2022 edition of norelem’s THE BIG GREEN BOOK

Automating your business process with robotics is not something to be scared of. The myth that robotics steals jobs has long since been debunked, and there is plenty of room for improvements within the manufacturing industry that they can help solve. Implementing robotics can help keep your business competitive in the global market, as well as provide an efficiency that is impossible to achieve with manual labour. There are currently a record number of robots installed; however, there is still room for growth, and the amount of revenue that could stimulate the UK economy if more is installed is staggering.

And if our creation and sale of autonomous robots is set to increase, our use of them across a number of industries may be set to increase alongside it.

https://new.abb.com/products/robotics

Though these numbers continue to rise, the IFR still ranked the UK outside of the top 20 countries with robot density within manufacturing. We can take from this that there is still room for robotics presence in manufacturing to grow on our shores.

Between 2020 and 2021, the UK became one of the top 15 for sales of industrial robots globally. The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) found that 2,205 industrial robots were installed throughout 2020, which brought the total in the country to around 23,000. These robots are primarily found in the automotive manufacturing industry in the UK with around 875, making up 16% of those that were installed in 2020.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

THEY WORK AMONG US…

Over the past few years, a need to move towards more automation in the manufacturing industry has been seen.

18 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk

Are robotics set to play a starring role in the next ten years of British manufacturing?

WHAT CAN ROBOTS DO FOR YOU?

The UK’s manufacturing industry has leant into a ‘quality over quantity’ mentality, focusing on top value from each product made, and robotics are now being incorporated into processes.

Technology is constantly changing our day-to-day lives and has had a particular impact on the working world. Automation is fast becoming a key conversation within multiple industries in Great Britain, including manufacturing with robotics emerging as the solution.

A big question from businesses still on the fence about bringing in robots is what can they do to improve processes. By automating sections of your manufacturing processes with robots, you’re given an opportunity to stay competitive within a constantly evolving industry.

In fact, a survey done by ABB Robotics found that of 250 SME and manufacturing companies, 81.2% were considering incorporating robotics into their processes to combat issues with workforce shortages and supply chain disruptions.

In this article, we’ll look at how, in order to keep up with the demand British manufacturing faces, more businesses are adopting robotics as a solution. We’ll also dive into what they can do for your business.

The government itself outlined how much growth was possible in a Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), estimating that there was a potential 40% annual growth for robotics and autonomous systems in the UK between 2020 and 2030. This could in turn mean an extra £6.4 billion in value for the UK economy by 2035.

Substituting traditional labour with robots within your processes can help to provide added efficiency. Robots don’t require breaks, and they’re programmed to carry out specific practices with much smaller margins for error than humans. This results in a more cost-effective output from your business, which could see greater revenue for less paid labour. Robotics can also be useful when it comes to tasks that require a steadiness that can’t always reliably come from humans. Whether it’s handling or removing materials that can be harmful or dangerous, welding, or separating materials from one another, robotics makes those tasks much easier to carry out.

Several sectors are seeing a benefit in robot application due to a lack of workers, including the food and beverage sector, which already uses industrial machinery and hydraulic cylinders, has seen an increase to 304 robots in 2020. This is a 96% increase in volume since the previous year.

Cook & Chill CCP Validation

PhoenixTM have developed a thruprocess temperature monitoring technology specifically for this task, designed to meet the challenges of the food processing market. Ideal for the validation process for any new cook regime, new product, or annual process certification. Whether performing an oven survey “oven mapping to identify cold spots” or validating the cook under production conditions, the thru-process profiling solution gives you the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability you need to satisfy your HACCP demands.

As its name suggests, thru-process profiling is the method by which product and or process temperature is monitored throughout the complete cook / chill process. The data logger making the physical temperature measurement, with multiple thermocouples, travels safely with the product through the process. Protection from process conditions such as heat, steam, water, and oil is provided by a suitably designed thermal barrier. The thermal barrier provides robust protection to the data logger to prevent damage but also ensure that it maintains a safe operating temperature to give accurate temperature readings. Monitoring of continuous conveyorised linear and spiral ovens and semi-continuous or rotational batch cooks is feasible where the use of external recorders with trailing thermocouples is tedious, completely impractical, and possibly unsafe . Employing the thru-process principal, process monitoring can be performed under true production conditions without compromising line productivity .

At the heart of the thru-process monitoring system is the PhoenixTM data logger. The PhoenixTM NT data logger range has been designed specifically for the challenges of monitoring food processing applications with an IP67 case design protecting from moisture. Type K or Type T data logger options allow accurate measurement of both cook and chill processes (Type T measurement range -200 °C to 400 °C). Data logger and thermocouple correction factors can be applied to the recorded data logger data to maximise measurement accuracy. PhoenixTM offer a range of thermal barriers to suit the process type, duration, and temperatures. Even if a standard thermal barrier cannot meet the process requirements, PhoenixTM can often custom design a unique solution to suit.

As part of any Food processors HACCP program, validation of cook and chill processes is a critical and significant task, taking time, effort, and resources.

PhoenixTM solution to HACCP

Monitoring core temperatures of food products can be a challenge and getting it right or wrong can have a significant influence on the data collected and therefore any decisions or conclusions made. PhoenixTM offer a range of different designs of thermocouple to suit different product types and sizes. The needle thermocouples ensure you can measure the true core/cold spot of the product accurately and repeatably. Fitted with standard miniature thermocouple sockets, the data logger is also compatible with other generic commercially available thermocouple designs.

FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk 21

Employing the thru-process temperature monitoring principle provides the food technologist with a complete temperature profile of the cook process from start to finish. This information is like the Cook DNA giving full details of the product and or process temperature which is invaluable to allowing validation of the Cook CCP. From a temperature profile it is possible to accurately quantify product safety (pasteurisation) knowing both the temperature, and time at temperature, of the product.

For a typical chicken cook process the lethality parameters for Listeria Monocytogenes (Tref 70 °C, Dt 16.2 s and Z value 7.5 °C) can be input to automatically and accurately calculate for each monitoring point the number of decimal reductions of the pathogen achieved during cook to meet CCP

From the profile graph you can see instantaneously the variation in product temperature at any point in the process either at different locations on the product (whole chicken) or different product positions within the cooker, cooking rack or across a mesh belt.

The PhoenixTM Thermal View Food Software provides a comprehensive suite of analysis tools to convert the raw profile temperature data into useful process information. The analysis tools include the ability to calculate Fo/Pu values for the process against target micro-organisms.

Thelimits.information gathered, further to process validation, can be used to allow informed process problem solving and optimisation to maximise product quality, yield, process productivity and Contactefficiency.PhoenixTM to help Find, Fix and Forget your Food Cook Problems! For the producer of some of the world’s most iconic cheese brands, compromising on metal detection sensitivity was not an option. Highlighting the benefits of the multi-aperture metal detector concept European commercial manager Jodie Curry expands: “The high-spec Fortress multi-aperture system was engineered specifically to ensure that that there was no trade-off in terms of performance and metal detection sensitivity. One of the key benefits of a twin aperture system is the halving of waste caused by rejects.” For optimal metal detection sensitivity the two compact apertures - measuring just 102mm in height by 254mm widemeans that the packs pass individually right through the centre point of the metal per hour being such a critical productivity benchmark, this game-changing multi-aperture design facilitates high speed and accurate metal detection and marks a step change for lean manufacturers seeking to reduce factory footprint and improve Total Cost of Ownership” notes Jodie.

Usingsensors.compatible collective parts, the inaugural integration of the new Raptor Checkweigher marks another big milestone for the inspection specialist. In 2021, the Fortress Raptor series won the prestigious Food Processing Lean Manufacturing accolade. Commending the natural synergy between metal detection and weight verification technology, judges hailed the high operational efficiency, cost savings and utilisation of common elements.

Fortress dual lane combi doubles

Constructed to the highest food grade standards, the modular 200mm wide conveyor assembly, conveyor decks and belts are all designed to be easily removed from the machine for rapid deep sanitation and maintenance. Operatives simply unclip and disconnect the conveyor motor. In just seconds, the conveyor belt is removed, and the belt tension and tracking is instantly restored when clipped back into place. All without using a single tool.

In a space-saving product inspection breakthrough, Fortress Technology has custom-engineered a unique twin aperture metal detector and dual lane Raptor checkweigher for one of the world’s premium dairy companies, helping to halve Receivingwaste. shredded cheese pouches directly from a dual head bagger, the bold design unlocks substantial space and cost savings for the busy dairy plant. Offering a customised solution that no other food inspection company could come close to in performance attributes, the twin lane conveyor configuration, consolidates a single Fortress metal detector uniquely divided into two apertures and two independent weight verification Raptor checkweighers for optimised quality control. Each technology and lane has its own air blast reject mechanism to isolate metal contaminants and weight rejects, helping to reduce and minimise good product being wasted by over 50 percent.

Fully integrated with the dairy plants’ upstream and downstream equipment and matching the 120-140 ppm output speed of the dual head VFFS bagging system, the compact geometry of the customised radius conveyor facilitates the positioning and orientation of product packs as they smoothly round the corner towards the metal detector. Providing optimal spacing between product packs as they are presented to each metal detector aperture helps to avoid congestion, bottlenecks and flexible packaging formats overlapping which could lead to sensitive weight verification checks being distorted. Additionally, the unique design gives the plant extra inspection and weight verification capacity, as two different product lines, pack sizes or SKUs can be run simultaneously adjacent to each other.

Air blast nozzles located between the two outfeed conveyors efficiently and independently remove contaminated product into lockable reject bins equipped with reject confirmation and bin full

“The issues when faced with such violence is to secure buildings and potential weak areas such as loading bays and other access points. We were dealing with exceptional weather up to the super typhoon level. The power would break a standard shutter system,” says Mr Hart.

Despite best intentions climate change is now a fact of life. How does this global conversation impact on regions such as North East England? The late storms of 2021, which continued into 2022 have already been referred to. But with damaging storms likely to be a feature of our weather pattern it is best to be prepared. The initial Hong Kong experience has been an opportunity for Hart to develop a very strong shutter system. Just in time as storm Arwen was the first of many storms to sweep across the UK causing significant damage to property.

Hart’s Typhoon shutter

Encouraged by Hart’s Hong Kong partner, Hart’s team re-worked on its existing Terror Screen, which is a large and heavy security shutter that offers protection for up to 20 minutes against cutting, drilling, crowbars and axes due to its exceptional robustness, to create Hart’s typhoon shutter, many of which are now in service.

Climate challenges boost Hart

The development of this super shutter is timely given climate change and the likelihood of increasing storms. Indeed the UK was hit by several storms in quick succession starting with Arwen last November with sustained strong winds generating gusts up to 110 mph.

The devastation was considerable with evidence of damage to forests and property large-scale and still evident

a rush to minimise the impact of fossil fuels by accelerating the transition to clean energy. One hundred nations pledged to end deforestation by 2030 at the recent COP but record numbers of trees have been recently plundered from Brazil’s part of the Amazon.

Withtoday.climate change the culprit there is

A ferry ride across Hong Kong’s harbour in the early stages of a typhoon caused Doug Hart, chairman, Hart Door Systems, to pause – just what sort of technology would be needed to create a secure, protective, shutter that could withstand the full impact of a typhoon he asked himself writes Chris Dobson. Research shows that typhoons and their sister storm, the hurricane could generate wind well in excess of 100 mph, enough at sustained levels to break any known shutter system.

The grain silo took the storm’s full force with six steel shutters, one in a machine store and five in a grain store, being damaged beyond repair. There was no other damage. Hart advised the client that the original 20g 65mm original shutters, where the wind-lock guides blew out causing irreversible damage, should be replaced with a heavier steel shutter comprising 18g laths and 100mm wind-lock guides.

With more storms of the Arwen strength forecast Hart has the perfect solution through its rollerhigh-performanceshutterwhichis a wind-resistant, robust and electrically operated roller shutter system.

Hart’s grain silo project

Five shutters measuring 5.7 metres wide x 5.9 metres high and one of 6 metres wide x 5.07 metres high have been fitted to the very large silo. This was the first installation as a result of the Arwen storm more of which are forecast to be a regular feature as a result of Climate Change.

www.hartdoors.com

A particular call to Hart involved a very large grain silo in Northumberland. Located in a shallow valley between the Cheviot and Kyloe hills, the storm barrelled its way south snapping or taking trees out of the ground and roofs off buildings in its track. Storm Arwen is well documented for its widespread and serious destruction across northern England where windspeeds reached levels of 100mph or more.

The shutter is perfect for high security in areas exposed to extreme winds from major storms and it complies with the current British and EEC safety regulations. Further during its development Hart third party tested the shutter which revealed it could withstand various high-pressure levels up to 4000 pascals. As a brand it is a perfect match for Hart’s Speedor range of highspeed, automatic doors. Just as the Typhoon shutter is about strength and protection, Speedor is about high-speed and frequent use in hightraffic situations, improving working conditions and saving energy.

Hart was able to draw on its experience with its Typhoon shutter which has been proven to be able to withstand violent storms. With more storms of the Arwen strength forecast Hart has the perfect solution through its highperformance roller shutter which is a wind-resistant, robust and electrically operated roller shutter system.

Roll cages and trolleys are a key link in the transfer of product to and from the production process and within intralogistics facilties. Automated guided vehicles (AGV’s) are sometimes used to support this activity but solutions that include cost effective automated FIFO buffering and queueing are few and far Untilbetween.now solutions to this problem have often been unwieldy, unreliable, and largely unaffordable. ICART tackles the problem in a revolutionary way.

There are no conveyors or complex mechanisms spread around the production area. Instead, iCart Trucks move roll cages between processes and iCart shuttles transfer, buffer and queue trolleys without human involvement.

The original iCart, developed 12 years ago, had many novel features including the ability to negotiate complex routes without user programming. Systems with a 1km route and 20 stop positions or stations were typically installed within a day. It has been successfully used around the world including the Giga-factory in the Nevada Desert.

The first application of iCart shuttles was in one of the largest mail centres in the UK over 3 years ago. Now shuttle buffers, up to 60m long, are in place in a variety of locations within the UK. Multiple shuttles sometimes work as a team within a single buffer passing work between each other to achieve high throughput. Multiple trolleys can be handled at the same time with loads of over 1 tonne. These systems manage, move and store trolleys without operator intervention saving thousands of miles of walking by operators every year. Further information www.icart-logistics.comat:

ICART shuttle buffers

The roll cage revolution

A lot of the success of iCart has been in its ability to handle short term storage and buffering as well as moving items from point to point. Most alternative storage systems are designed to hold items for days or weeks. With iCart the storage timescales are measured in minutes or hours.

34 FDPP -

The second generation iCart, launched this year, has double the performance capability in terms of load, speed and Trolleymanoeuvrability.handlinghas always been a key feature of iCart. The iCart shuttle was specifically created to support buffering and queuing of trolleys. The iCart shuttle is a “game changer”. It can handle the buffering, queuing and transfer of trolleys and roll cages without the need for complex push-pull mechanisms or conveyors. It moves under the roll cage or trolley, using laser sensors to build a profile of the roll cage and can adjust its position and connection mechanisms accordingly. It can recognise gaps in the buffer and quickly move nearby trolleys to ensure there’s space available where needed. This profiling also enables it to compensate for significant variations in manufacturing tolerances. The shuttles are battery powered and automatically move to a floor mounted charging point when they have no work to do. Energy Costs are another key benefit, typically less than £75 per year. The integration of truck and shuttle enables a complete hands-free load-unload solution. The shuttle can load and unload trolleys and roll cages automatically. Trolleys can be transferred in and out from the system either directly via shuttle buffers or at manual load unload stations.

FIELD TO YIELD IMPROVEMENTS

Previously reliant on manual labour to maintain a constant case-loading pace, now a dis-parate, unconnected bagging and checkweighing system has been fully integrated into the BR2 case packing system. “By uniting all the electronics up the line, the machines all communicate with each other via a common control platform installed by Brillopak. This helps to pre-empt bottlenecks, address production lags and respond instantly if packs get trapped. Should any of these events occur, the upstream packing and checkweighing machines slow or stop automatically until all the processes are 38 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk

Automation’s brighter for Europe’s largest carrot farmer

Having explored numerous robotic pick and place options over the last decade, an inno-vative mechanical case loading system designed by Brillopak is delivering against Will’s exacting criteria. With an estimated ROI of 2.5-years, Huntapac tasked Brillopak to engi-neer an affordable, compact bespoke tray packing system to accumulate and present carrot packs into neat layer formations in retail-ready crates. Will Hunter explains: “There’s an accepted truth within the farming community that auto-mation can address labour shortages and improve how packs are presented into retail trays. Despite this, it can be hard for many to justify a seven-year ROI on traditional pick and place robots.” An accumulation system based upon Brillopak’s PunnetPAKer design with an innovative retractable overhead push and slide mechanism more than halved the ROI and answered this conundrum.

graded by size and quality, packed and checkweighed. Once loaded into the cases, the carrots are then transported to a cold store, ensuring the vegetables stay fresh and maintain their high quality before distribu-tion across the country to fill the supermarket shelves.

Presenting up to 80 carrot packs per minute into retail trays, Huntapac replaced one of its traditional rotary table, manual crate packing lines with the automated system earlier this year.

Harvesting 4000 acres of root crops a year – the majority carrots – Prestonbased Huntapac Produce is laying the groundwork to boost its automation packing efficien-cy. Starting with a customised Brillopak vegetable case loading Foundedsystem.during WWII, family-run carrot farmer, now one of the largest in Europe and supplier to most of the major British supermarkets since 1974 (including Tesco and M&S Food), regards itself as a pioneer. Now, Will Hunter - a robotics advocate since the age of 16 and fourth-generation operations director - is leading a new mission to introduce the best quality control, process and packaging technology to boost productivity, with the fastest ROI.

Operating 16 hours a day, five days a week, 1200 tons of carrots are graded, washed, polished, cooled, optically

Having spent several decades working with industry leaders and fresh produce customers to successfully overcome packing automation and quality control issues of this nature, Brillopak was the right firm for the job. The company’s specially-adapted BR2 vegetable packing machine allows Huntapac to run different sized and weighted carrot packs, from 500 grams to 1.5 kilograms, smaller Chantenay carrots, and even parsnips, as well as dif-ferent packaging materials including new recyclable substrates. All without incurring time delays by switching robot end effectors.

“Because we are removing the reliance on agency staff, our productivity per person has significantly increased. Our core Huntapac packhouse team was excited to see the machine go in and felt really con-nected to the project and the wider benefits of eliminating labour intensive routine activi-ties of this nature. The wellbeing, safety, motivational and upskilling advantages were ev-ident from day one.” Although crate insertion and removal is currently performed at the end of the cell manual-ly, the carrot farmer hasn’t ruled out automating the crate destacking and palletising phase to complete its packing automation cycle in the future. As an extremely marginal business, automation has become an imperative in fresh pro-duce packing operations.

all the electronicsupstream FDPP

Will concludes: “We have been thrilled by the speed in which Brillopak engineered, in-stalled and integrated all the upstream electronics. Within a couple of hours our carrot case loading machine was up and running and hasn’t stopped performing since. The lev-el of communication throughout the project was exceptional and I don’t recall ever having a machine with this level of complexity run so well from day one.”

With most carrot crates destined for supermarket shelves, consistent display presentation of the carrots, face up and positioned straight up with the branding and labels clearly visi-ble to consumers is vital. Huntapac’s existing merging system and bag flippers ensures that each carrot pack is horizontally aligned before being fed into the Brillopak case pack-ing machine.

With Brexit and COVID compounding the resourcing issue, moving from a fastpaced la-bour intensive crate loading operation to an automated system has been welcomed by the farm. Better staff satisfaction has been observed by Will:

in-step with each other again,” explains Will. “The speed is very much governed by the processing speed of our baggers and checkweighers. Although the case loader is capable of going faster, we wouldn’t want it to compromise the quality of our produce,” adds Will.

Four packs are then presented individually onto a collation support plate, nudging each one along until there are four slightly overlapping packs. Director David Jahn describes the sequence: “The concept follows a similar principle to a coin pusher arcade game. As one lands on the previous pack, gravity pushes them over to create crate-ready layer. As soon as the four packs are in position, a side load slider gently pushes the carrot packs onto a flap opening device located directly above the crate. Simultaneously to the carrot packs lowering into the crate, the slider flap lifts, retracts overhead and drops be-hind the next set of carrots, pushing next accumulation towards the crate flap. The flexibility of the system assists Huntapac to respond to the seasonal peak demands, including the packing of parsnips – another core part of the grower’s business. The night shift also regularly runs smaller Chantenay carrots on the line.

Due to the success of this installation, Will is considering automating case loading on all 16 carrot lines, potentially creating a dedicated parsnips line too.

F ERTILE GROUND FOR GROWTH

“In many instances where margins are already compressed, af-fordable automation can be more effective than implementing traditional lean manufactur-ing enhancements which tend to only deliver incremental efficiency improvements. Espe-cially when labour input costs are rising higher than fresh produce commodity prices,” notes David Jahn. Not only does the reduction of manual work streamline packing processes, it also reduces waste and improves worker safety. Flexible machines which can be adapted to seasonal produce and future packing and product applications further increases their viability, with less risk.

Subway stores bake bread three to four times each day so the EcoCooling system was designed to capture the surplus heat generated by both the ovens and the walk-in fridges to provide heating for the whole shop and not just specific hot spots. This was done by redirecting the hot air into the shop to provide heating in the winter months.

Evaporative cooling is then used to cool the store during the summer when the hot air from the ovens is extracted to the outside of the building.

Evaporative cooling is extremely beneficial in a bakery environment. Says Richard Packham, Director UK & Europe for Snap-on Industrial: “Snap-on’s automated system takes tool management to an entirely new level. The ability to monitor several boxes from one central computer offers managers a huge time saving advantage.”

The need for adaptability intensified during the pandemic, when many production plants experienced a boom in demand and needed to set up extra lines to produce critical supplies such as respirator components and personal protection equipment (PPE). On the other hand, some companies needed the flexibility to switch their production to entirely new items — from alcoholic drinks to hand sanitiser, from luxury fashion to medical gowns.

Another great advantage of automation cells is that they can be placed in any building where there is enough floor space. This means facilities like empty warehouses can be easily repurposed to set up a new production plant in record

The solution in a nutshell In this context, closed-loop automation cells have become increasingly popular.

Compared to traditional production flexibility.offerautomationlines,cellsunprecedented

The use of automation cells allows the company to set up new production lines very quickly, so instead of relying

For example, British electric vehicles (EVs) start-up Arrival uses flexible automation cells in its microfactories, which are small-scale production plants that the company is planning to set up on the outskirts of cities worldwide.

Automation cells and the standardisation of manufacturing components

is perfect for manufacturers that need to establish a new production line very quickly, for example to respond to a sudden surge in demand. However, it will also facilitate those who are planning to bring production closer to the final customer to save on logistics costs, reduce lead time and minimise the company’s overall carbon footprint.

Neil Ballinger, head of EMEA at EU Automation,

Thistimes.approach

Customisation and high-mix low-volume (HMLV) production are not new concepts in manufacturing. Both have risen to prominence in the last decade, with the demand for increasingly personalised products and services. These trends require manufacturers to rapidly adapt to changing market conditions, and to reconfigure their production and assembly lines accordingly.

44 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk

The COVID-19 pandemic, a tense socio-political global climate, and an increasingly demanding customer base have all contributed to a growing need for flexibility in manufacturing. As a result, manufacturers need equipment that can be quickly and easily reconfigured, rather than fixed production lines where every change may require weeks of downtime.

Here Neil Ballinger, head of EMEA at EU Automation, a global supplier of quality automation components, explains the role of automation cells in transitioning to a more agile business model.

Automation cells, or robot cells as they are often called, are closed systems containing equipment that can automate several stages of the production process. For example, they may include robotic arms that load and unload the parts to be machined, in-feed and out-feed conveyors, and machine vision systems that determine what part is being fed-in, and that measure and inspect post-processed items.

Compared to traditional production lines, automation cells offer unprecedented flexibility. Since the days of factory pioneer Henry Ford, manufacturing plants have worked in a similar way — with long, linear production lines where items pass from station to station, being processed and finally inspected and shipped. In these lines, every change requires the intervention of multiple experts and can lead to several weeks of expensive Ondowntime.theother hand, automation cells allow for a modular and easily scalable factory structure. These cells can be quickly rearranged on the factory floor whenever manufacturers need to restructure the production process — some models even come on wheels.

For example, FANUC’s Build Your Cell configurator guides users at every step to create the ideal cell for their Theapplication.benefits of automation cells are clear — production can start shortly after the manufacturer perceives the need for new workstations, either because of unprecedented demand, or because of the necessity to adapt production to new specifications. As well as this, costs are minimised and the overall agility of the plant is increased.

The beauty of automation cells is that they contain everything the plant needs to automate the production process — or at least some of its core aspects — in an extremely compact architecture. Like Lego building blocks, the components in the cells are structured so that they all fit together to occupy the least possible space.

FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk 45 on production sites overseas, Arrival has chosen this innovative approach to reduce costs by bringing production closer to where its vehicles are needed.

A further advantage of automation cells is that a factory structured this way can be very easily scaled up and down according to market demand, by simply adding or subtracting cells. This is a great approach for start-ups and smaller manufacturing companies who might not be in the position to invest in a huge and cost-prohibitive facility but want to give themselves space to grow. A look within — standard components

This is leading to an interesting phenomenon in equipment manufacturing — the standardisation of automation machinery. Traditionally, production and assembly lines were bespoke projects that required the expertise of several high-skilled professionals, such as design engineers and systems integrators. Designing, building and testing the line took several months, was extremely expensive, and required long periods of downtime.

On the other hand, automation cells can be realised in less than one week, although up to three weeks may be needed to map out the necessary tasks within the cell and establish the optimal workflow. There are even useful digital tools to help users in the process.

It seems clear that manufacturing is evolving from an industry based on cumbersome, bespoke projects to one that requires extreme flexibility through the use of modular architectures and standardised components. Automation cells offer a great chance to innovate manufacturers’ business models and keep up with the ever-evolving needs of an increasingly demanding global Formarket.weekly updates on the new trends in smart manufacturing, and to order a wide variety of quality automation components from all major brands, visit www.euautomation.com.

Top tips for avoiding food contamination

FLUID MAINTENANCE While incidental contact between the HT-1 certified fluid and the food product will not pose a risk to consumers, manufacturers should still do everything possible to prevent any maintenance issues that could lead to the fluid impacting production.

THERMAL FLUID CONTAMINATION

46 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk

Fluid degradation can cause a buildup of carbon and other by-products in pipes, reducing heat transfer efficiency and causing products to be cooked inconsistently. If the fluid is properly maintained, manufacturers can slow down the degradation process and reduce the risk of unplanned downtime.

In any environment where thermal fluid may come into contact with a consumable product, manufacturers should consider using a food grade thermal fluid. Food grade thermal fluids must carry a HT-1 certificate, granted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the NSF International, to be approved for use in food processing. They are typically colourless, non-toxic, non-irritating and non-fouling, so if they do come into contact with food and therefore consumers, they lead to lower recall rates. Food and beverage processing reactions take place at very specific temperatures, so manufacturers require a fluid with precise temperature control. Global Heat Transfer’s Globaltherm™ FG, for example, can operate and maintain temperatures ranging from -20 to 326 degrees Celsius. It has outstanding thermal oxidation stability and a lower viscosity than standard mineral oils, so it is easier to pump around the system. This thermal fluid has HT-1 certification and is accredited for use in Kosher and Halal applications.

FOOD GRADE FLUID

Thermal fluids degrade over time, especially when operating at high temperatures for long periods of time.

To achieve this, manufacturers can implement a preventative maintenance programme. This should include regular visual walk-round checks, as well as quarterly fluid sampling to determine the condition of the fluid. Engineers can samples taken from a live, hot and circulating system to a laboratory for fluid analysis, using the results to plan preventative actions to maintain or expand fluid lifespan.

The food processing sector must uphold the highest standards to ensure food safety and prevent crosscontaminated products from reaching consumers. By selecting a food grade thermal fluid and carrying out regular fluid analysis and maintenance checks, plant managers can ensure that their products are manufactured safely and efficiently.

All parties involved in the food processing chain have a responsibility to ensure that food reaching consumers does not become contaminated. While manufacturers already take steps to prevent the main causes of contamination, thermal fluid could be a hidden contaminator. Here Clive Jones, managing director of heat transfer fluid specialist Global Heat Transfer, explains how thermal fluid choice and maintenance can prevent crosscontamination being a problem.

For more advice on choosing and maintaining thermal fluids, visit www.globalhtf.com.

Heat transfer fluid is transported around a facility in pipes, meaning that it is unlikely to come into direct contact with a product. However, if any issues occur in the system that leads to leaks or breakages, the fluid could contaminate the product. If food and beverage manufacturers use a standard heat transfer fluid and there is incidental contact with the product, the whole batch must be scrapped to avoid any contaminated food reaching consumers, damaging their health and the company’s reputation.

Cross contamination can occur at any stage of the food production chain, so food processing facilities have processes and procedures in place to remove any risk of product mishandling. These are built on an understanding of how crosscontamination occurs — food handling is one of the main causes of cross contamination. For example, a worker may handle raw meat without gloves and then touch other food products without washing their hands. Food residue left on equipment can also provide opportunities for contamination, as well as the harmful bacteria often found on raw products, for example if blood from raw meat drips onto uncovered products. Food processing applications, such as brewing, baking or freezing, often require indirect heating or cooling generated from a heat exchanger and transported using thermal fluid. The fluid may absorb excess heat energy and take it away from the product, or transfer heat energy to the product.

ALL FEATURES IN ONE EDITION

Will your label software include all the features you need?

When purchasing label software, a problem that often comes up after purchase is that the edition of the software selected does not include all the features you need to design and print your labels. Many software suppliers will only offer software using a tiered business model. Meaning, inevitably, that unless the most expensive edition is selected, the customer will have features restricted on their software. For example, a customer buys their label software and later discovers that the edition they have is not able to connect to the database of their choice. The consequences of restricted features like this can be very frustrating. The user will need to establish which edition includes the feature they need and ultimately will need to upgrade to a more expensive edition.

This is where LabelDirect for ZPL comes in. A fully comprehensive label design and print software package for £245, developed by Industry leader Image Computer Systems. The FMX5 is a laboratory scale version of the Silverson Flashmix powder/liquid mixer and provides a simple, effective and hygienic means of powder/liquid mixing. The unit is suitable for small scale manufacturing and R&D work with a typical batch size of up to 10 litres, depending on viscosity. The FMX5 is also available in a hygienic specification, the FMX5 UHS, which is recommended for hygienic applications and clean industries.

This year Silverson Machines will be on stand E52 at the PPMA show. On the stand will be a range of high shear mixing equipment, from smaller-scale Laboratory mixers to full scale production mixers such as the Flashmix high speed powder/liquid mixer. As well as the Flashmix, this year visitors to the stand will be able to see working examples of the Silverson Batch, Bottom Entry, Ultramix and Laboratory mixers including the Verso-UHS-HV.

Silverson Machines at the PPMA show 2022

The Verso-UHS-HV is a bench top In-Line mixer designed for mixing high viscosity products. It incorporates the same unique and innovative ‘pumping rotor’ design as the production scale UHSHV In-Line mixers. This substantially increases its self-pumping capacity, allowing it to process products such as gels, creams, sauces and gum solutions on a laboratory scale. A conversion kit is available allowing the Verso-UHS-HV to be configured as an FMX5 Powder/Liquid mixer. Also on the stand visitors will get to see the Silverson Bottom Entry mixer in action.

Heat exchanger helps produce carrot powder

Family-owned for four generations, Huntapac is a leading grower and supplier of root crops such as carrots and parsnips. Following a reorganisation of the business in 2019, the company wanted to develop new value-led product options and so installed a stateof-the-art line to produce carrot powder, with a heat exchanger from HRS Heat Exchangers forming a key part of the new Establishedprocess.near

Preston by William Hunter in 1942, Huntapac initially grew a range of crops for fruit and vegetable markets in the North West, before starting to supply leading supermarkets almost fifty-years ago. The company was a major producer of root crops (carrots and parsnips), salads and brassicas (such as cauliflower and broccoli) until a few years ago, when it decided to rationalise its operations and concentrate solely on the root crops.

“Five per cent may not sound like a lot, but when you are washing up to 400 tonnes of carrots a day, it soon adds up,” comments Huntapac’s Commercial Director Steven Kay. “We researched a few methods because there are lots of different drying techniques available,

washing and packing. With the increased focus on root crops, the company was keen to add value to the five per cent of the crop which is not suitable for its packing customers and looked at a number of options before deciding on the production of carrot powder.

58 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk

The business grows more than 1,300 hectares of carrots and parsnips across the UK, from Suffolk to Scotland, all of which are taken to the company’s factory at Holmes near Preston for

“With the tight margins involved in fresh produce, it is important to maximise the value of the crop which has cost you money to grow, and this line allows us to utilise the entire crop,” adds Steven Kay.

www.hrs-heatexchangers.com

“The line has been designed to be able to handle other crops, but we have initially chosen to focus on carrots and although we have had to make tweaks as you do with any new process, we are now very happy with the quality and of the product that we are producing.”

In early 2020 plans began in earnest for the powder production line. As the first of its kind in the country, this took a lot of consultation between all the parties involved, including equipment suppliers such as HRS Heat Exchangers. The process begins when the carrots are diced and then pureed, after which they are fed into the heat exchanger. This consists of two HRS R Series rotary scraped surface heat exchangers placed in series, which raise the temperature of the carrot puree from 10 °C to 60 °C. As well as the heat exchangers themselves, HRS supplied two feed hoppers and an HRS BP Series positive displacement pump to feed the puree into the heat exchanger. The heat for the process is supplied from a dedicated steam boiler and the line has a capacity of 500 kg of puree per hour. The warmed puree is then passed over a drying drum where it is dried to create a flaked product which is milled down into the finished powder.

Production of carrot powder began in the first half of 2021 and the line now produces around 60kg of dried finished product an hour. The carrot powder is produced under Feed Materials Assurance Scheme (FEMAS) accreditation and is used as an ingredient in animal feed.

“Pre-heating the puree before the drier performs two main functions,” explains HRS UK Sales Manager, Andy Ensor. “Warming the puree makes it easier to move through the line as it has less resistance, but the biggest benefit is that it reduces the amount of energy needed to dry the puree making the overall process more efficient.”

With the tight margins involved in fresh produce, it is important to maximise the value of the crop which has cost you money to grow.

FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk 59 and we felt that the process that was right for use was to puree the carrots, put them over a drying drum and then mill the flake that results into a powder.”

Oldham couplings are an ideal coupling for food and beverage equipment due to their misalignment accommodation, zerobacklash properties, and balanced design. Ruland manufactures hubs in aluminium for general purpose applications and 303 stainless steel for high corrosion and temperature applications, giving designers an off-the-shelf coupling suitable for various servo-driven applications such as connecting a motor to a ball screw, lead screw or gearbox. Oldham couplings are comprised of two hubs that mate to a center disk. This three-piece design allows food and beverage equipment designers to customize oldham couplings with a clamp or set screw hub with inch, metric, keyed, and keyless bores. They have a balanced design for reduced vibration at speeds up to 4,500 rpm and operate with low bearing loads, protecting these sensitive components from premature failure. In addition, Ruland uses a proprietary hub machining process that leaves a smoother surface for interaction between the hub and disk, resulting in longer life and reduced downtime. The oldham disk is available in acetal for zero-backlash and high torque capacity, PEEK for high temperature and corrosion resistance, and nylon for dampening and noise reduction. In the event of failure or wear, the disk is replaceable, restoring the original performance characteristics of the coupling. Oldham couplings also act as a mechanical fuse during torque overload situations, with the disk breaking cleanly and stopping power transmission.

The use of 303 stainless steel combined with a PEEK disk allows designers to use standard oldham couplings in a wider variety of servo-driven applications. Stainless steel hubs have hardware of like material to maintain consistent corrosion resistance. Ruland adds a proprietary surface treatment to hardware to prevent galling. Ruland oldham couplings are available in bore sizes from 1/8 inch to 1-1/4

inch and 3 mm to 32 mm. Disks can be manufactured with a center hole to allow further shaft penetration or slots for retention hardware to attach the disk to a hub so it can stay in place during Oldhamdisassembly.couplings are carefully manufactured in Ruland’s factory in Marlborough, Massachusetts under strict controls using proprietary processes. 3D CAD files, full product specifications, and additional technical information are available on www.ruland.com. www.ruland.com

With its heavy duty, hygienic design, the Delta 3000 is fast becoming the flow wrapper of choice for the fast-growing chilled sector, where it is used to pack everything from sandwiches, pies and cheese portions to fresh fruit & veg, meat, poultry and fish. IMA ILAPAK is currently experiencing particularly high demand from producers of sandwiches and hand-held snacks thanks to the Del-ta 3000’s ability to accommodate complex laminates, paper films and recyclable PE and PP mono-films with its long dwell sealing technology.

“The Delta 3000 has a long dwell sealing head which is capable of running films that a rotary sealing system simply cannot handle. Paper films are notoriously difficult to run on flow wrappers because of their structureapplying heat evenly and efficiently to achieve a hermetic seal is made difficult by the thermal insulating properties of the top paper layer. IMA ILAPAK has over-come this by deploying special geometry surface treated sealing jaws in conjunction with consol-idated long dwell technology,” said Tony.

At the same time, the Delta 3000 meets the chilled food industry’s stringent hygiene require-ments by enabling full wash down capability, even of the sealing elements. This has been achieved through full stainless steel execution, isolating the electrical cabinet from the main ma-chine frame and smooth, sloping surfaces without Asrecesses.wellas food applications, the Delta 3000 is suited to non-food applications where a hermeti-cally sealed pack is required, such as medical and personal care products like wet wipes.

“Two of the topics on everyone’s lips are workforce shortages and sustainable packaging; the equipment we have on show illustrates how we can help our customers to address both chal-lenges.

Automating the infeed of the flow wrapper is a relatively simple step that eliminates the need for manual loading. It is a starting point and we are hoping that at PPMA it will also be a talking point for discussions about how we, as part of the IMA Group and FLX HUB, can work with our customers to implement laboursaving automation technologies at every stage of the packaging workflow,” said Tony McDonald, Sales and Marketing Director at ILAPAK UK.

Not only in times of rising energy prices is energy efficiency one of the most important goals of industry. Highly efficient components from NORD DRIVESYSTEMS help to reduce the energy consumption of drive systems. Additionally, the drive specialist offers its customers energy-related advice. We help our customers to save energy”, is how Jörg Niermann, Head of Marketing, sums up one of the major guidelines of NORD DRIVESYSTEMS. The company’s drive components are increasingly optimised towards the factor of energy efficiency. A study by the Mechanical Engineering Industry Association VDMA and the management consultancy Boston Consulting Group has shown that innovative technologies in mechanical engineering and plant construction can help to reduce CO2 emissions in the entire industry by up to 86 percent. “And we want to support our customers in using their savings potential”, Niermann says.

PATENTED DUODRIVE GEARED MOTOR

HIGHLY EFFICIENT IE5+ SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR NORD sets new standards with regard to energy efficiency with the IE5+ synchronous motor, which achieves an efficiency of up to 95 percent. Thanks to permanent magnet synchronous motor technology (PMSM), it achieves this high efficiency relatively constantly over a wide speed and torque range and also provides very good energy consumption performance in partial load and partial speed ranges. This means that it even surpasses the highest defined energy efficiency class IE5. Due to its wide power range, the IE5+ also contributes to reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) beyond the energy efficiency by enabling version reduction in an overall system. “Especially for systems with numerous drives, for example in intralogistics, there is a significant savings potential here”, Niermann says.

NORD DRIVESYSTEMS not only helps its customers to discover and achieve such a savings potential with its efficient components but also with a special service. The NORD ECO service checks the customer’s installed drives with regard to energy efficiency, dimensioning and number of versions. From this, NORD creates an energy efficiency concept that identifies possible savings potentials and is tailored to the customer’s “Inrequirements.timesofrising energy prices, increasing energy efficiency is becoming more and more relevant”, Jörg Niermann emphasises. The IE5+ synchronous motor is also part of the patented DuoDrive geared motor, where it has been integrated into a single-stage helical gear unit. Calculated via the system, the geared motor achieves up to 92 percent, one of the highest efficiencies on the market in this power class. “The fewer interfaces, the higher the system efficiency”, Jörg Niermann explains. The integration of the drive into the gear unit housing reduces the installation space, the number of wear-prone parts and thus also the maintenance effort. Broadway has specialised in the manufacture of custom colour masterbatches for 25 years. They also offer additive masterbatches and compounds. Specified by international consumer goods companies, Broadway’s materials are used in many market sectors including food and drink, cosmetics and personal care.

Highstreams.opacity, high gloss black plastics are a popular packaging choice in the food and drink sector. Estimates suggest up to 60,000 tonnes of black plastic packaging may be entering the UK waste stream each year. The ability to recycle this is restricted by high levels of carbon black pigments used in traditional black masterbatches. Broadway called upon its extensive experience in colour chemistry to overcome this barrier.

Sustainability & innovation

Broadway’s Sales Manager Chris Bird explained; “The colour suite allows us to support brands in product development and aids the transition to recycled materials. The inherent tint of PCR material often means new colour formulations are required. We swiftly formulate new colour samples using our customers’ PCR material.

Plastic moulders throughout the UK and Europe rely on Broadway’s costefficient formulations, fast lead times and personable service. Broadway offers FREE colour matching and their friendly team are always happy to discuss new enquires.

Situated in the Suffolk countryside (around 135 minutes from London), their site offers the benefit of a custom colour matching suite. This allows customers the opportunity to approve a range of new colours in a single day – saving time on product development. It’s great for brands looking to exceed the 30% PCR threshold to avoid the UK Plastic Packaging Tax.

Broadway’s latest developments include PCR-based masterbatches and odour neutralisers for use in PCR.

R&D Scientist at Broadway Dr Stephen Rayner said; “Our new NIR Detectable Piano Black is real achievement. Months of development work resulted in a rich, high-gloss black, which remains detectable in NIR recycling streams. This demonstrates Broadway’s commitment to diverting materials away from landfill whilst maintaining a resolute focus on the aesthetics of the moulded component. We see this as a real solution for the packaging industry.”

From farm to fork

The food cycle begins at the production stage. In the face of greater demand, farmers are increasingly employing automation to augment their operations. In this setting, bearings are used in a range of machinery such as agricultural scanners, combine harvesters, balers and seeders. Due to the severe mechanical strain and abrasive particles in this environment, bearings for agriculture must be durable and reliable, with a long service life.

From the London Beer Flood of 1814 to the Tapioca Tanker Disaster of 1972, there has been a host of high-profile food and beverage disasters at all stages of the food processing chain. While innovative new technologies have been vital in continuing to improve safety and of modern operations, one small mechanical component is indispensable across the whole food and beverage supply chain. Here Chris Johnson, managing director at food grade bearing supplier, SMB Bearings investigates the role that bearings play in the food and beverage industry. Despite consistent challenges over the past two years, the food processing industry is projected to reach USD 235.67 billion by 2028, demonstrating healthy growth from its USD 143.51 billion market size in 2020.

Heavy duty bearings are a popular choice when choosing bearings for precision farming technology as they are often subjected to heavy loads in addition to shock loads and vibration. Due to the high risk of contamination, bearings fitted with labyrinth contact seals are often specified along with extreme pressure (EP) greases. Many Despite challengesconsistentoverthe past two years, the food processing industry is projected to reach USD 235.67 billion by 2028, demonstrating healthy growth from its USD 143.51 billion market size in 2020. The role of bearings in the food and beverage supply chain

Ball bearings are used in countless precision agriculture applications, as well as in conveyors, mixers and picking and weighing machinery. In fact, if any piece of food processing machinery rotates, it will use bearings to ensure smooth travel. So, let’s take a closer look at the importance of choosing the right bearings at three key stages of the food processing supply chain.

BEARINGS IN AGRICULTURE

PACKAGING CONSIDERATIONS AND BEYOND Following production, the product passes to the packaging stage. By investing in a high-speed robotic pick and place cell, operational efficiency can be increased substantially. For robotics applications, thin section bearings deliver high speeds, improve efficiency and offer design flexibility. Due to the little difference in size between the internal and external ring, these bearings also reduce the weight on the application and the space However, requirements.because they are so thin, you have to pay particular attention to the roundness of the ring itself. As a result, the manufacturing process must be extremely precise to ensure the highest possible degree of roundness in both rings, as well as good noise levels in the bearing itself. This will normally call for fine grinding and machining, complemented by a very high level of quality in both the process and the raw materials. If the rings are not perfectly formed, even a minute discrepancy will stop the bearing running as smoothly, producing excess noise and disrupting the food packaging line. In efforts to enhance supply chain efficiency, even the smallest components can make a big difference. It’s important that food and beverage plant managers consider component suitability at all stages of the food cycle to ensure they can meet the production needs of Fortomorrow.further information about food grade bearings and lubricants, visit the SMB Bearings’ website or contact a specialist today by emailing www.smbbearings.comsales@smbbearings.com.

For processes such as heating, boiling and baking, bearings must be suited to extreme temperatures. Stainless steel ball bearings can be supplied with non-toxic lubricants approved to NSF H1 or H2 standards. Bearings with a choice of food grade lubricants can withstand the ingress of water or cleaning chemicals, as well as coping with regular steam cleaning.

Next, the product passes to the manufacturing stage. From continuous high speeds to extreme temperature, excessive moisture and chemical exposure — bearings in food processing lines face numerous challenges. Bearings used in these settings must meet a range of non-standard criteria. The first consideration is the need for continuous high speeds. Contamination is also a concern in many forms. For the highly regulated food and beverage sector, contamination can lead to costly production loss. Excessive moisture due to washdown cycles can also result in lubricants being flushed out of the Similarly, component.chemical exposure from detergents and sanitisers can cause corrosion and accelerate component wear. Acetal resin bearings offer a low cost, corrosion resistant option. Suitable for low load and low speed use. For greater corrosion resistance and extreme temperatures, alternative ring or cage materials can be used such as polyether ether ketone (PEEK), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF).
