Moria was burned to ashes on September 8, 2020. Since 2015, with the start of the European refugee crisis, Moria has turned from a military camp to the first refugee reception center on the Greek island of Lesbos. As refugee numbers increased and more zones were added, it gradually became the largest refugee camp in Europe with 20,000 inhabitants.

Many people have tried to tell the bitter truth about Camp Moria by documenting the story photographically, cinematically, and verbally. The lives of 20,000 people in deplorable conditions are now not only stored digitally in the memory of cell phones, hard drives, and servers but have also become part of the collective memory and pain of refugees who found it difficult to set foot in Europe in search of a better future and happiness. “In Limbus” aims to create an architectural presentation in the form of a short documentary that uses digital architectural tools and media to recreate a three-dimensional space and transform it into a narrative.

Visual aids such as photographs and videos capture the visible space. This feature provides the ability to view a space repeatedly at a specific point in time. Retrospect allows you to revisit and display objects with two particular characteristics: Things that were chosen as the main subject, and things that were not the main subject but played an undeniable role in reinforcing the main subject. For example, a red stone between white stones becomes the main motif to express a concept called “contrast”. One of the objectives of this research is to explore the idea of extracting a concept, i.e. collective memory, and transforming it into a three-dimensional structure which can be seen on the page 102 of this handbook. The use of architectural means plays an important role in this process, which can help us to create a three-dimensional nature. The existing images of Moria are meant to represent two elements to highlight the reality of Moria and to call for an appropriate response to it: These two elements are the refugees and their lives in inhumane conditions. The aim is to call on the international community and the European Union to address this problem and find an appropriate solution. In this work, an attempt has been made to present the forced migration of war refugees and the less than warm reception by Europe and its policies with a Storytelling approach.

The goal is to reconstruct the already captured reality, have a better spacial understanding of a place that exists no more, and analyze parts of it to keep the storyline informative. The final result is a 12-minute video that depicts excerpts from the story of asylum seekers using visual elements of various techniques. The sound produced by artificial intelligence accompanies the images and tells the story. The reason for using this type of sound is to keep the narrator’s tone of voice neutral in order to prevent any additional sensation and not to interfere with the audience’s perception of the image. The main challenge in preparing this work was to maintain a balance between abstraction and pure truth. For this reason, images can individually be different but together they will be coherent, and complementary.
