HEY NEIGHBOR!
COMMUNITY MEMBERS SHARE THEIR LOCAL FAVORITES
TOMMY HAGAN Retiree
Tommy Hagan first started coming to Mountain Home to visit friends and he was so struck by the natural beauty and outdoor amenities, he established his own weekend residency about 14 years ago. Now semi-retired from the insurance industry, he lives here full time where he enjoys the community’s many amenities.
What’s your favorite aspect of the area that led you to live here full time? I originally fell in love with the White River and the Twin Lakes area, just the natural ambiance, the rivers, the lakes, everything. I grew up in San Antonio and lived in El Paso, lived in Little Rock for about 50 years, and loved those places. I get up here and it was just so much different for a big city boy, all a sudden I’m thinking I like this a lot better.
What do you like best about the city and its people? The beauty of this area is it’s not like some towns where you have to be born and raised here to be in the inner sanctum. Most of the people around here came from other places and so I have found it so easy to meet new people, and get involved. It’s just easy, you know? It’s been no problem. I absolutely love this place. I can’t say enough good things about this area.
What are some of your favorite places for a night out? When my wife, Shalla, was alive our favorite date and anniversary and birthday place was Whispering Woods. That’s my number one favorite. I also like going down on the square, you know, to Rapps Barren Brewing Company. I just love that place and it’s part of a real rebirth in the downtown area.

Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement at ASU-Mountain Home
A native of Mississippi, Christy Case Keirn has lived in Mountain Home since 2007 when she joined the staff at Arkansas State University Mountain Home. Today, she serves as its Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement.
What’s special about the way Mountain Home supports its institutions? People here want to be part of the success of our institutions. I have seen it in how people donate to our scholarship fund to help students attend college or in how they support the arts we bring to campus. I have seen it in the way they get behind other fundraising initiatives. People don’t just pay lip service to such things, the people here get behind it for real.
What is your favorite campus event that is also shared with the wider community? My personal favorite is our performing arts series at ASU-MH. We have one of the most beautiful venues on campus, something I would put up against anything in the region. It is my joy to see the place packed with people who appreciate the quality of performances that we bring here.
What makes Mountain Home such a great place to live, go to school and build a career? We have amazing educational facilities here, both K-12 and at the post-secondary level, rated among the best in the state. There’s a wonderful quality of life with the beautiful outdoors and all the things there are to do in town, far more than you might expect in a community our size. I’m not originally from here, but I could never leave — I love this place. This is home.
Mountain Home is known for its natural beauty, warm hospitality, and sense of community. Heather Knight Loftis is co-owner and general manager of local radio stations KTLO, Classic Hits and the Boot. She is also a proud native of Mountain Home.
What are some of your favorite things to do outdoors in and around Mountain Home? We try and take full advantage of the special places our community has to offer. Camping in Bull Shoals White River State Park, enjoying Gaston’s White River Resort, both Lake Norfork and Bull Shoals Lake, spending the day at Buffalo Point. Don’t miss Buffalo City, it may be my most favorite city in the world! I have to pinch myself every time we camp at White Buffalo Resort knowing this piece of heaven is just 15 minutes from our house.
What are some of the favorite Mountain Home community festivals held every year? So many people work hard to celebrate the very best this community has to offer. Some of our favorites are Coulter Celebration of Lights, Baxter Summer Concert Series and Red, White and Blue, which bring out the very best of our community.
What makes Mountain Home a good place to start and grow a business? There is a true spirit of community within our local businesses. In turn, our local businesses support so many of our community endeavors, our schools and our nonprofit organizations. This is just another thing that sets our community apart.

Founders of Little T'’s Mini Golf and More
Scott Tavegia and his wife, Brandi, recently moved to Mountain Home where they own and operate Little T’s Mini Golf & More, Little Dipper’s Ice Cream Shop and most recently, Little T’s Say Cheese restaurant. Their corporate philosophy is to provide the community with family-friendly and affordable entertainment through their businesses.
As a relatively new resident of Mountain Home, what surprised you most about the community? Mountain Home has the perfect balance of small town community, great schools, health care, outdoor recreation and larger city convenience. The city feels safe, connected, natural yet bustling. There is always something to do, see and participate in!
What are some of your favorite ways to spend a weekend in and around Mountain Home? We love to hike! You can stroll the trail at ASU-Mountain Home's campus and see the art, or play disc golf. There is fantastic fishing on the White River or Norfork Lake. You can kayak out of Pigeon Creek or hike the trails. And, of course, a fun and competitive round of mini golf at Little T’s Mini Golf & More is always a must.
What is your go-to restaurant for a night out? We love Little B’s Grill; outstanding food, atmosphere and excellent service. If you had to sum up Mountain Home in a single word or phrase, what would it be? Balance; we get to work hard and play hard. There are numerous opportunities to serve and give back in Mountain Home, yet we also have the ability to slow down, relax and enjoy family life after a day of work. We love Mountain Home; I have lived all over the U.S. and other countries, but this is the first time I have felt at Home.
