Meet Instructor

Tyler Wardrop

Brooks local Tyler Wardrop has watched his hometown grow into a vibrant and uniquely diverse community.

As an instructor with Medicine Hat College’s Extended Learning team, he primarily teaches JBS team members, one of the largest employers in the area. What makes his role so meaningful, he says, is the people.

“My favourite part about the community here at the Brooks Campus is how diverse it is,” Tyler shares.

“There are a lot of interesting students with different backgrounds, both young and old. And

it’s great to be able to talk to them and learn about them, wherever they’re from. We have people from all over the world.”

It’s a depth of culture that he says often surprises people. Once people break through the surface level of Brooks, “there’s so many people here who have so much to offer. There are 100 languages spoken here, we have just such a depth of culture, experiences, and unique opportunities here just from the people who have made this place their home.”

Tyler shares that unlike teaching in K–12, Extended Learning gives him the flexibility to adapt his approach, shaping practical discussions and exercises around what each student needs and hopes to gain from the course.

“To me, serving the community means giving back because you can,” he says. “I’m very fortunate; this community has been very good to me. I’ve made a lot of awesome connections here with both friends, students and colleagues. And I’m happy to share my skill set because if one of us shines, we all shine.”

While he’s taught in other environments before — including K-12, his experience teaching team members from JBS has been uniquely rewarding.

“There’s a desire to learn, to improve. The drive for people who take these classes is that they also want to serve the community, they also want to be able to give back.”

"That kind of learning environment is exactly what makes the Brooks Campus so special," Tyler says.

“There is such an opportunity for learning here because the community desires it. Brooks is a city that wants to do better, not that they need to, but because they want to.”

Meet Student

Brooklyn Schell

"I grew up on a farm, and I knew I wanted to take something in agri-business, but I wasn’t totally sure what," Schell says, "When I saw the Agri-Business Certificate offered at Medicine Hat College, I thought, let’s try it and see what happens."

Brooklyn paired the Agri-Business Certificate with courses from the Computerized Bookkeeping program.

"You need to know bookkeeping for farming, it's something we do every single day." she says, "It just made sense to pair the two together."

Brooklyn shares that the instructors having a background in farming themselves made the learning feel relevant.

"They also brought in speakers from places like MNP

and FCC, so we could get a broader understanding of what agri-business really looks like out in the world."

Brooklyn says data analytics was one of the most informative pieces in the course.

“We spent time on Excel and learned how important it is to track and understand data from year to year. That’s such a key part of running a farm as a business. I already knew a lot about agriculture, but not so much about the business side. It was overall a knowledgeable experience.”

"It’s also been helpful that the Extended Learning program is more flexible than a regular academic program. You still have assignments and classes, but it’s more flexible. I can go to class for a few hours and still head back out to the farm to help. That balance was important to me," she adds.

"Even if you come from a business background and have no experience in agriculture, I think it’s really practical. Whether you want to work with organizations like FCC or MNP, or you’re a bookkeeper with farming clients, it helps to understand what goes on in agriculture. You start to see why expenses look the way they do. Like why someone’s spending thousands on chemical or why a truck costs $145,000, it all starts to make sense when you understand the context."

"If someone’s unsure about what they want to do, or maybe doesn’t want to commit to four years of school, I’d definitely recommend starting with a certificate. It gives you a feel for the industry, and it doesn’t take long. You can always build from there." Brooklyn says.

Meet Instructor

Frances Pope

Frances Pope, instructor for the Resilience Coach micro-credential, shares, “I think that it's such a cool opportunity for people to explore the high-level neuroscience and research in a way that's really applicable not only to what they do, but also to their own personal experiences.”

Frances encourages participants to reflect deeply on how the course material relates to their everyday lives — not just in their professional roles, but also in their personal experiences as parents, partners, and individuals.

The program creates space for conversations that range from interpersonal relationships to broader societal systems like government and policy.

It invites participants to consider how neuroscience and resilience research can shape the way they understand themselves and the world around them.

She says, “It’s not just one piece. It’s exploring the complexity of what the science means as well as what it means to be human in the world and in relationship with one another.”

Frances brings over 15 years of experience working with children, youth, and families to her role as instructor of the Resilience Coach Micro-credential. Her background includes community social work, wilderness therapy, drop-in and open custody programs, and substance use services.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care from the University of Victoria and a Master of Science in Neuroscience from the University of Lethbridge. She's focused her research on the neurological effects of parenting, stress, and resilience. Frances has a deep understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders, family systems, and the long-term impacts of trauma, knowledge she integrates into her teaching to help learners connect the science to real-world experiences.

This micro-credential builds on the Brain Story Certification from the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative and provides coaching skills rooted in brain science. Through a mix of direct instruction and practical training, participants gain tools such as motivational interviewing and learn how to support recovery and resilience in their communities.

Frances describes the program as a unique blend of personal identity, professional practice, and the science that connects them.

Developing Talent. Strengthen your staff

When your employees grow, so does your business. We deliver training that helps your staff succeed — practical, relevant, and built around your goals.

Meet Constable Judah Knip

Since joining the police recruit training program, Cst. Judah Knip says his communication, stress tolerance, and empathy have grown in big ways.

“Communication,” he says. “I was always someone who kind of steered away from confrontation. That’s not really an option in policing. You learn how to talk to people. How to get them to comply without things escalating. Just using your voice.”

He says scenario-based training pushes recruits to develop these skills in real time.

“You get put into scenarios that are as close to real life as they can safely make it—and you just learn how to take it as it comes,” he says.

“Stress tolerance is a big one,” he adds. “I’ve seen it build in me as the training’s gone on. You’re put in uncomfortable situations on purpose — situations that feel real. And you don’t have a choice but to face them head-on.”

With mentorship from experienced officers, recruits get constant feedback. “Everything we have learned is going to be able to be put to use,” he says.

“They give you pointers on what you did wrong, what you did right. It’s definitely helped shape our skills.” Judah values the relationships being built through the program.

“We’re being taught by the same people we will work with one day,” he says. “Building those relationships now means when we get out in the community, we’ll be familiar with these people.”

He also sees the partnership with Medicine Hat College as a natural fit. “It’s a huge resource, and it’s part of the community already. Being able to train with them just makes sense.”

Looking ahead, Judah knows the kind of officer he wants to be. “We talk a lot about empathy, being able to relate with people, kind of stand in their shoes, and understand how they’re experiencing things. We’re always told people don’t call the police if they’re having a good day. I want to be a police officer that can handle the stress of those situations, but also remain empathetic.”

His advice for future recruits: “Go in with an open mind, be open to learning. You get a lot thrown at you both material-wise and scenario-wise. Stay positive. Everyone in this building (at MHPS) has gone through this, there’s no reason why I can’t do this.”

“I’m excited for my career. I’m excited to get out in the community and start learning more.”
