Morro Shores residents are invited to participate in mindfulness talks led by Buddhist teacher, Timber Hawkeye, the author of three books on the practice. I personally have been attending Timber’s talks for the past 8 years and I have read all of his books. He is a marvelous teacher who has opened my eyes to a lot of selfdestructive behaviors and pain I was needlessly carrying. As he says, pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
Timber starts off each session with his monthly e-mail topic and then the conversation goes on from there. Everyone is welcome to express their ideas and ask questions and believe me, there is a lot of wisdom in the room and we learn from each other. During his talks Timber will help you discover the difference between feelings and emotions, the disparity between truths and facts, and the countless benefits of mindfully living a simple and uncomplicated life. He always offers plenty of food for thought about the non-judgmental benefits of recognizing and acknowledging both the ego and the divinity within us all.
We are meeting from 10:30am to noon on the second Sunday of each month (except Mother’s Day), and we look forward to you giving us a try!

Yet another fun packed afternoon with our neighbors and friends seated and listening in Switzer’s Hall. Several of whom told wonderful, funny, inspiring, and heart felt stories from the past.
Lenny T. remembered the recent passing of Val Kilmer with a story about him. Lenny used to be a house painter for the rich and famous in the town of Malibu. He received a call from Kilmer’s assistant, it seemed Kilmer wanted his brick fireplace painted the same color as his kitchen floor, gray. Lenny said he would do the painting job and it would last a lifetime. A few months later Lenny’s fireplace painting job was on TMZ. It seems Kilmer never received permission from the landlord he was renting the house from and was being sed over it. He had to remove it. OOPS!!
Denise T. also told a story of Val Kilmer. She was working at a famous dress design store in the Topanga Plaza Shopping Mall. One day Cher walked in with her then boyfriend, Val Kilmer. After Cher selected a few clothes to try on, the couple retreated to the back dressing rooms. The couple seemed to be spending a long time in the stall together, so the manager walked by to investigate. One sniff of a familiar herbal weed to the rest of the story.
Mike J. had a fun story about Neptune, no not the Ocean God, nor planet, nor the cremation society, but of Neptune the dog. When Mike and his wife Donna moved to Colorado, Neptune was the first guest to meet and greet them. He was a big 80 pound plus dog, with long hair that made him look like a buffalo. Mike recounted how he was both a companion but most of the time a pest.
John H. had a very touching story called “Two Benches”. The two benches of the story are right across the street from us in Sweet Springs. The first bench is left of the bridge. It’s where John and his partner Larry sat and decided to buy their home here in Morro Shores. The second bench is to the right of the bridge by the duck pond. It is a bench John has bought for the remembrance of his late partner.
Carole called her story “Ouch”. OUCH indeed!! She told a harrowing story of the time she drove off the road on Highway 46, near the site where James Dean had his fatal crash. Before the start of her journey, she had found an Angel pin belonging to her late husband and pinned it to her blouse. Hours later, driving west from Visalia, she accidentally swirled off the road and plunged down a 160-foot embankment. Luckily for her an off-duty fireman was driving behind her and stopped to help rescue her. After the accident and safely strapped into an ambulance, a lady paramedic spotted the Angel pin and said, “that lucky Angel pin might have saved your life”.
Peter C., former rock and roll band member, is going to tell a series of stories about famous departed rockers. There’s the dead poet society, why not start the dead rockers society. Peter told the story of the late Jimmy Hendrix, whom he shared the same stage with several times. Both of them were signed under the contract with legend rock promoter, Bill Graham. Peter recounted on how Jimmy came up with the first ‘Feedback’ and ‘Fuzz Box’. He remembers Hendrick’s 6’9”, thin bass player, with a big hair do, and called the ‘Lamp post’.
Jim M. finished up the round of stories, recounting the story of Ozzie Silna, a former customer of Jim’s. Ozzie Silna and his story of ‘rags to riches’ and ‘only in America’. Silna and his brother became owners of an ABA (American Basketball Asso.) team but were left out of the NBA-ABA basketball merger in 1976. They negotiated one of the ‘greatest deals in the history of sport’. They obtained a team share of the television rights into perpetuity of every game played. In 2014 the NBA finally bought out their share. In total they made 800 million dollars over the 38 years. They never lifted a single finger for the NBA to earn it, they just held a piece of paper.
After the stories, we all enjoyed a delicious chocolate bundt cake brought by Judy, yummy oatmeal cookies made by Linda C., and a tart lemon cake by Jim. Please join us next month.
Always on the first Monday of the month. This time it will be an anniversary, birthday party!! Celebrating two years of the Storyteller’s Club. Come and listen and enjoy cake and a glass of bubbly.
Jim M.
On a beautiful sunny first day of spring, 24 of our finest athletics of Morro Shores Park, met at the Bocce Ball courts to start a new season. General managers Linda C. and Chris G. provided the players with a variety of doughy orb sugar bombs, baptized in oil as hot as hell (aka doughnuts) and some good old strong coffee. All charged up, 6 teams of 4 players each, started rolling for a fun, entertaining, and a laughable season with neighbors and friends.

You see, it's never the environment; it's never the events of our lives, but the meaning we attach to the events, and how we interpret them that shapes who we are today and who we'll become tomorrow.

I don't believe professional athletes should be role models. I believe parents should be role models.... It's not like it was when I was growing up. My mom and my grandmother told me how it was going to be. If I didn't like it, they said, "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out." Parents have to take better control.
Charles Barkley
There is no such thing as can't, only won't. If you're qualified, all it takes is a burning desire to accomplish, to make a change. Go forward, go backward. Whatever it takes! But you can't blame other people or society in general. It all comes from your mind. When we do the impossible, we realize we are special people.
Jan Ashford, Australian consultant You don't have to take life the way it comes to you. You can design your life to come to you the way you want it.
Dan Zadra, communications authority
I believe life is a series of near misses. A lot of what we ascribe to luck is not luck at all. It's seizing the day and accepting responsibility for your future. It's seeing what their people don't see and pursuing that vision.
Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson were on a camping trip. They had gone to bed and were lying awake looking up at the sky. Holmes said: "Watson, look up. What do you see?"
"I see thousands of stars," he said. "And what does that mean to you?" Holmes continued.
"I suppose it means we will have another nice day tomorrow. What does it mean to you, Holmes?"
"To me, Watson, it means someone has stolen our tent."

Hospital regulations require a wheelchair for patients being discharged. But a student nurse, found one gentleman dressed and sitting on the bed. He insisted he didn't need a wheel chair.
After a chat about rules, he reluctantly let the nurse wheel him to the elevator. On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.
"I don't know. She's upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown."
