Presidents' Day is a U.S. federal holiday on the third Monday of February, officially named Washington's Birthday to honor the first president, but popularly recognized as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, especially Abraham Lincoln (whose birthday is Feb. 12) and George Washington (Feb. 22). The holiday was moved to a Monday in 1971 by the Uniform Holiday Bill to create three-day weekends, and its broader name emerged as people began honoring all past presidents, not just Washington. Key Points:

• Official Name: Washington's Birthday.

• Date: Third Monday in February (Federal Holiday).

• Original Purpose: To celebrate George Washington's birthday

• Evolved Purpose: To honor all U.S. Presidents, often focusing on Washington and Lincoln.

• History: Established as a federal holiday in 1879, moved to Mondays in 1971, leading to the common name "Presidents' Day".

Why it's Celebrated:

• It honors the lives and contributions of all U.S. presidents.

• It provides a day off for many workers, creating a three-day weekend.

• It's a chance for civic reflection on the nation's leadership and history.

Mardi Gras, French for "Fat Tuesday," is a festive celebration of feasting and revelry before the Catholic fasting season of Lent begins, culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday (February 17, 2026, for Mardi Gras Day) with parades, costumes, music, and beads, especially famous in New Orleans and Mobile, with roots in pagan festivals and European traditions. The official colors are purple (justice), green (faith), and gold (power).

Key Aspects

• When: The Carnival season starts on Twelfth Night (January 6) and ends on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) before Ash Wednesday, with dates varying yearly.

• What: A grand festival featuring elaborate parades with floats, masks, music, dancing, and "throws" (beads, doubloons, toys) tossed to crowds.

• Where: Celebrated globally in Catholic countries, but iconic in the U.S. in New Orleans, Mobile, AL (America's original Mardi Gras), and Galveston, TX.

• Significance: A final chance to indulge before Lent's fasting, symbolizing pagan fertility rites and Christian preparation for Easter.

• Traditions: Celebrated by "Krewes" (social clubs) who host balls and parades; Zulu coconuts and Muses shoes are famous throws in New Orleans, notes Wikipedia.

Origins & History

• Dates back to ancient Roman Saturnalia and pagan spring festivals.

• Brought to North America by French colonists; Mobile, AL, hosted the first U.S. celebration in 1703, says Visit Mobile, notes History.com.

Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent, a 40-day period of prayer and fasting before Easter, observed by many Western Christians (Catholics, Anglicans, some Protestants) by receiving ashes on their forehead in the shape of a cross, symbolizing repentance, mortality, and devotion to God, often accompanied by the phrase "Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return". It's a solemn day of reflection, focusing on spiritual discipline, confession, and preparing for Christ's resurrection, with ashes made from last year's Palm Sunday palms.

Key Aspects

Start of Lent:

It's the first day of the penitential season leading up to Easter.

Ashes:

A priest or minister places ashes (from burned palm fronds) on foreheads in the shape of a cross.

Meaning of Ashes:

Symbolize mortality, repentance, and belonging to Jesus Christ, referencing biblical themes of mourning and dust.

Phrases:

Often said during the service are "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" or "Repent, and believe in the Gospel".

Observances:

Includes fasting (one full meal, two smaller meals) and abstinence from meat for Catholics and some others.

Focus:

A call to self-denial, prayer, and turning back to God, not a Biblemandated holiday but rooted in biblical practices of repentance.

Not for All:

Eastern Orthodox Christians observe a similar period starting on "Clean Monday" (Cæruleum Monday) instead.

When is it?

It falls 46 days before Easter Sunday, always on a Wednesday, with the date changing yearly (e.g., February 18, 2026).

Meals on Wheels can bring that nutrition right to your door, regardless of your economic status. Service is available to homebound individuals who are 60 years of age or older; who – due to illness or disability – are unable to purchase food or cook meals for themselves; and who do not have someone to purchase food or cook meals for them on a consistent basis.

Weekly Meal Deliveries & Scheduling

Home-delivered meals are delivered once per week on the same day between the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Your meals are delivered by route, which is determined by your address, and cannot be altered. In the event of your delivery day coincides with a national holiday, you will be notified of the rescheduled day in advance. You must be available to receive your meals. Drivers will not be able to leave your food outside, as it is against policy. If you are unable to be at home when your delivery is scheduled, you may call and arrange to have your meals delivered to a next-door neighbor or have someone receive and sign for your meals.. If cancellations or holds exceed three continuous weeks, service will be cancelled and reactivated when client is able to receive delivery regularly again. We cannot risk our clients’ health by leaving uneaten, unrefrigerated food for an unknown period. If you let us know in advance, we will leave your meals with a neighbor, but this is an exception and we will work with you to develop the best plan to handle rare exceptions.
