Passover (or Pesach in Hebrew) is a major Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.
The name "Passover" refers to the final of the Ten Plagues sent by God to convince the Egyptian Pharaoh to free the Israelites. According to the Book of Exodus:
⢠The Miracle: God instructed the Israelites to mark their doorposts with the blood of a sacrificed lamb.
⢠The Protection: When the "Angel of Death" struck the firstborn sons of Egypt, it "passed over" (or skipped) the houses marked with blood, sparing the Israel
⢠Freedom: It is the "Season of Our Liberation" (Zman Cheiruseinu), celebrating the transition from bondage to physical and spiritual freedom.
⢠Birth of a Nation: The Exodus marks the beginning of the Israelites' journey toward the Promised Land and their formation as a distinct nation with a covenant with God.
⢠Trust and Resilience: The removal of leavened bread (chametz) and the eating of matzah (unleavened bread) symbolize the haste with which the Israelites left
Egypt, trusting God to provide for them even when they had no time for their dough to rise.
⢠The Seder: A ritual meal held on the first one or two nights, involving the retelling of the Exodus story from the Haggadah ("the telling").
⢠Matzah: Often called the "bread of affliction," it represents both the bread eaten in slavery and the "bread of freedom" from the hasty escape.
⢠Bitter Herbs (Maror): Eaten during the Seder to recall the bitterness of slavery.
⢠Cleaning: The total removal of leavened products from the home symbolizes a spiritual purging of pride and ego.
In Christian tradition, Passover is seen as a "shadow" or foreshadowing of Jesus Christ Jesus is often referred to as the "Passover Lamb" whose sacrifice offers salvation and freedom from the "bondage of sin". The Last Supper is widely believed to have been a Passover Seder.
Do you have any questions about the specific items on the Seder plate or the rituals performed during the meal?
Good Friday is a solemn Christian holy day commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ at Calvary. It is observed during Holy Week on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, which celebrates Jesus' resurrection.

While the day commemorates a tragic event, it is called "Good" for several theological and linguistic reasons:
⢠Ultimate Sacrifice: For Christians, Jesus' death is the ultimate act of love and sacrifice that atoned for humanity's sins.
⢠The Path to Salvation: It is considered "good" because it was a necessary precursor to the resurrection, which offers the promise of eternal life and reconciliation with God.
⢠Linguistic Origins: The term "good" in this context is an Old English word meaning "holy" or "pious". Some also believe it may have evolved from "God's Friday".
⢠Solemnity and Reflection: Unlike the celebratory nature of Easter, Good Friday is marked by a somber atmosphere. Churches often use black cloths to cover statues and crosses.
⢠Fasting and Prayer: Many denominations, particularly Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians, observe a day of fasting and abstinence from meat.
⢠Veneration of the Cross: A central part of many services where the faithful reflect on and sometimes physically kiss a cross to honor Christ's sacrifice.
⢠Stations of the Cross: A 14-step devotional practice that retraces the final steps of Jesus before his crucifixion.
⢠Liturgical Silence: Many Catholic and Orthodox churches do not celebrate the Mass/Eucharist on this day, emphasizing mourning.
⢠Three Hoursā Devotion: Some churches hold special services from noon to 3 p.m., the hours during which Jesus is traditionally believed to have hung on the cross.
