Meet the Emcee, Mike Brose Michael W. Brose, MSW, serves as CEO (Chief Empowerment Officer) of the statewide advocacy agency Mental Health Association Oklahoma (the Association).

Since 1993, Mike has worked to ensure the Association has a reputation for bringing community partners together to address improving access to health care, preventing suicide, providing housing and supports for people with mental illness, ending homelessness, and decriminalizing people who are impoverished and/or have a mental illness.

During his early years with the Association, Mike studied national trends in treating mental illness and wondered, “How can you help someone with mental illness without consistent treatment or access to care?”

With this in mind, and equipped with tenacity and persistence, Mike set out to motivate the Tulsa philanthropic community to actualize his vision. Among his strongest supporters and partners were Maxine Zarrow and, her now late husband, Jack.

Together, they created the Zarrow Mental Health Symposium.

“I remember Maxine and Jack talking about how much they wanted families to have access to the same mental health care and resources that helped their own daughter, Kathy,” Mike recalled. “I actually remember Maxine saying, ‘If it’s this hard for us, how hard it must be for those with limited or no resources.’ That’s when, out of their own hearts, the Symposium was born.”

By Gail Zarrow Richards Before my sister, Kathy, was officially diagnosed with schizophrenia, my parents, Maxine and Jack Zarrow, struggled alone. My mother said it was like “floundering in an ocean in a rowboat without any oars.”

I met Mike, Mental Health Association Oklahoma’s current CEO, in 1993. At the time, my family was going through a difficult period with Kathy. She had been in and out of mental health hospitals and on and off the streets for the better part of two decades. Mike, with his gentle and nurturing disposition, assuaged our fears by making us believe that we were not out of options.

In fact, we could best help Kathy by becoming staunch advocates for people living with mental illness.

Mike believed that if we could educate our community and make it more hospitable to people living with mental illness, not only would Kathy benefit, but we

could also create systemic change. Heeding Mike’s advice, my parents founded this event -- now the Zarrow Mental Health Symposium.

Working alongside Mike, they believed in the power of bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders to work towards real solutions to create systemic change and meet the needs of Kathy and others needing mental health services and support.

Keynote Thursday: 8:15AM - 9:30AM According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), schizophrenia afflicts 1.1 percent of the American adult population. The number grows when considering the full psychotic spectrum, also known as “the schizophrenias”: 0.3 percent of the American population are diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder; 3.9 percent are diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder. I am aware of the implications of the word “afflicts,” which supports a neurotypical bias, but I also believe in the suffering of people diagnosed with the schizophrenias and our tormenting minds.

I was officially diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type eight years after experiencing my first hallucinations, back when I first suspected fresh hell in my brain. I remain surprised by how long it took. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2001, but heard my first auditory hallucination — a voice — in 2005, in my early twenties. I knew enough about abnormal psychology to understand that people with bipolar disorder could experience symptoms of psychosis, but were not supposed to experience them outside of a mood episode. I communicated this to Dr. C, my psychiatrist at the time, but she never uttered the words “schizoaffective disorder,” even when I reported that I was dodging invisible demons on campus, and that I’d watched a fully formed locomotive roar toward me before vanishing. I began to call these experiences “sensory distortions,” a phrase that Dr. C readily adopted in my presence instead of “hallucinations,” which was what they were.

The Collected Schizophrenias: An Excerpt Esmé Weijun Wang

Some people dislike diagnoses, disagreeably calling them boxes and labels, but I’ve always found comfort in preexisting conditions; I like to know that I’m not pioneering an inexplicable experience. For years, I hinted to Dr. C that schizoaffective disorder might be a more accurate diagnosis for me than bipolar disorder, but to no avail. I believe she was wary of officially shifting me from the more common terrain of mood and anxiety disorders to the wilds of the schizophrenias, which would subject me to self-censure and stigma from others— including those with access to my diagnostic chart. Dr. C continued to treat my condition with mood stabilizers and antipsychotics for the next eight years, never once suggesting that my illness might be something else. Then I began to truly fall apart, and switched to a new psychiatrist. Dr. M reluctantly diagnosed me as having schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type, which remains my primary psychiatric diagnosis. It is a label that I am okay with, for now.

People speak of schizophrenics as though they were dead without being dead, gone in the eyes of those around them. Schizophrenics are victims of the Russian word гибель (gibel), which is synonymous with “doom” and “catastrophe” — not necessarily death nor suicide, but a ruinous cessation of existence; we deteriorate in a way that is painful for others. Psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas defines “schizophrenic presence” as the psychodynamic experience of “being with [a schizophrenic] who has seemingly crossed over from the human world to the non-human environment,” because other human catastrophes can bear the weight of human narrative — war, kidnapping, death — but schizophrenia’s built-in chaos resists sense. Both gibel and “schizophrenic presence” address the suffering of those who are adjacent to the one who is suffering in the first place.

Because the schizophrenic does suffer, I have been psychically lost in a pitchdark room. There is the ground, which, may be nowhere other than immediately below my own numbed feet. Those foot-shaped anchors are the only trustworthy landmarks. If I make a wrong move, I’ll have to face the gruesome consequence. In this bleak abyss the key is to not be afraid, because fear, though inevitable, only compounds the awful feeling of being lost.

Keynote Thursday: 12:10PM - 1:55PM A: I think most of us feel hopeless at times because we see these systems as being so huge and what could some small person like us do. But, we all can make a difference. Fundamentally, one of the things we can do is think about who we’re voting for and what they’re talking about. I think the tough-oncrime attitude that has permeated our country for so many years is shifting.

People are beginning to understand that if you really look at who is in the criminal justice system, a lot of it has to do with economics and race. You have to look at what’s underneath the behavior. The vast majority of people who are incarcerated in any state are coming out in worse shape than when they went in. I think just from a practical matter, that isn’t what most of us want.

Q: What does resilience mean to you?

A: To me, resilience really means the ability to bounce back.

It’s the ability when something kind of knocks you off balance, you’re able to right yourself again.

Trauma: A Missing Piece Stephanie Covington, PhD, LCSW Dr. Stephanie Covington is a clinician, author, organizational consultant, and lecturer. Recognized for her pioneering work in the area of women’s issues, she specializes in the development and implementation of gender-responsive and trauma-informed services in both the public and private sectors.

Q: What can people do to reverse the trend of incarcerating people instead of offering them treatment?

Women in the criminal justice system, they’re incredibly resilient. It’s amazing when you listen to their life stories, what they’ve been able to survive and how they still have hope for the future. Some people are born more resilient than others. We all have different sorts of physical and mental constitutions we come into the world with. What we would want is to have any system of care, whether it’s our mental health system, whether it’s our addiction services, whether it’s our criminal justice system, our services for kids, to be building people’s resilience versus tearing it down. So often the tearing down process is what has happened in corrections.

Q: What will be some of the big takeaways from your Symposium keynote?

A: Gender matters. If we want women to become resilient and heal, we have to provide them with the materials and the types of programming that are designed for them. The other thing I want attendees to take away is thinking about the impact of trauma, and understanding that, in fact, recovery and healing is possible.

Keynote Friday: 12:10PM - 1:55PM educated. You have to make sure people have economic opportunity.

You have to make sure people are plugged into a society.

I mean, if you add drugs or anything to the mix, that will exacerbate the problem or it will cover the problem. The problems often don’t have anything to do with drug addiction. We’ve just been using drug addiction as a distraction not to solve the real problems, which are far more complicated than drug addiction.

Q: When Symposium attendees go back to their communities, what would be some of the key points from your keynote that you would like people to remember?

A: One of the major things that I want people to know is that if the vast majority of people who use any particular drug don’t have a problem, then we can’t blame that drug. It requires us to look past the drug, and it requires us to look at the person, to give that person a comprehensive assessment and try to understand what’s happening with that person, what’s happening in that person’s environment.

I hope that these folks understand that people who use psychoactive substances to alter their consciousness are doing so seeking joy, seeking relief from anxiety, from whatever.

Drug Talk for Grown-Ups Dr. Carl Hart

I hope that they understand that we have used this drug issue to further marginalize those people on the margins, and we are participating and subjugating those people and it’s not right.

Dr. Carl Hart grew up in a low-income neighborhood in Miami where drug use was prevalent, and he both used and sold drugs. However, that life led him to the Air Force and later he became a Columbia University professor, where he has dedicated his time to researching substance use.

Q. One of the things that you discuss in many of your talks is the decriminalization of all drugs. If we were to go that route, should we expect more deaths from overdoses and an increase in crime?

Q: Do you still think that America can actually address the drug addiction issue?

A: I wanted to study neuroscience to figure out what was the brain mechanism responsible for drug addiction. I thought that if I found that mechanism, I would be able to solve problems in my neighborhood because, at the time, I thought that the problems were related to drug addiction, low employment, poor education and crime.

But then, later, as I studied more, I learned that was wrong. Drug addiction has little to do with these problems. Society is telling us that the problems are related to drug addiction, but that’s a lie. You have to make sure people are

The Future will be Better

By Dr. Chan M. Hellman Hope is the belief that the future will be better and you have the power to make it so.

That’s a powerful concept, especially now as we join together at the 25th Annual Zarrow Mental Health Symposium.

Despite the many challenges we face, I really do believe the future will be better for people with mental illness. We just have to keep fighting for our friends and loved ones to have access to high-quality services when they need it most.

And we need to support our brightest minds as they generate new and innovative ideas that will transform our daily practices in profound ways.

At its core, that’s what the Symposium has been about for the past quarter-century. And that’s why I am honored to share about the power of hope during my keynote presentation. More importantly, it’s an honor to be your fellow attendee.

This year’s Symposium theme is Resilience.

Recovery. Rethink Mental Health. That reminds me

that hope and resilience are both key components to recovery and well-being. As for rethinking mental health, I’m encouraged this is happening on a grand scale in our state and region. Innovators in both the public and private sector are hard at work rethinking the very framework of mental health and recovery in terms of lessening the stigma on the issues themselves so we can treat a person’s mind, body and spirit.

This is all to say that I know we’re in a phenomenal time for improving the way that we provide services. And many of those improvements will start as ideas right here at the Symposium.

I am in awe of each and every one of you.

You are the reason I remain hopeful for the future.

You are advocates. You are service providers.

You are members of law enforcement.

You are policymakers. You are educators.

You are funders. You are more together than you are apart.
