2022 VOLUME 1

Principal’s Message A wonderful sense of homecoming greeted me as I joined our students to begin the 2022 school year together. A special school spirit has also permeated MGS, one characterised by strong connectedness and a sense of belonging to our MGS family.

I am sure our girls share a similar feeling upon their return to school after the end-of-year school holidays in immersing themselves in the happy bustle of school life and meeting up with their friends. The vibrancy that each day brings, through the myriad activities and school programmes that you will read about in this issue, contribute to the creation of precious shared memories as our girls learn, grow and build enduring friendships.

Our theme for the year - Here, For a Purpose, anchors us in the intentional searching for and appreciating the deeper relevance and meaning of why we do what we do in their lives. It therefore gives me much encouragement and joy to see our girls and staff embracing opportunities to learn for life and to contribute to the community, and to witness them giving their best in whatever they undertake to serve others before themselves.

We also welcomed new faces to the MGS family - our Primary and Secondary One students, alongside new staff, and are thankful that COVID-19 measures are gradually easing to allow schooling to resume with greater possibilities. For example, 2022 will see the resumption of both the National Schools Games and the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation, activities our girls very much look forward to participating in.

As we look forward to an exciting year ahead as our school turns 135, we are especially appreciative of the wonderful MGS community who works together in resonance with the school to develop resilience, creativity, empathy and compassion in our girls that will sustain and empower them to flourish and seize opportunities amidst life’s myriad circumstances to master, grow so as to serve.

We are deeply grateful for Ms Grace Ng’s leadership, dedication and service to MGS as Principal from 2014 - 2021. The initiatives and improvements she had put in place has equipped our girls with future-ready dispositions and strengthened the ecosystem around each child in our school. We also thank Ms Karen Ivickz for her impactful contributions to MGS as our Vice-Principal from 2018 - 2022. We wish them both all the very best as they begin the next phase of their leadership journey.

Above all, we thank God for His everlasting love, faithfulness and goodness to MGS. It is by His grace and to His glory that MGS continues to seek to Master, Grow and Serve as we provide an MGS education that nurtures our girls in “being and becoming our best selves for our community, country and world”.

Startathon Junior 2021

By Giselle Chan (4T), Liew Sam-I (4T), Lakshana Thilagar (4G), Josephine Ho (4T) and Jodie Teo (4S) Organised by River Valley High School, ‘Startathon Junior’ is a twoday intensive hackathon that challenges participants’ innovation and actualisation skills. The event was centred around the theme of “Navigating the Pandemic”, and one of our groups, B5, ideated in accordance with our allocated domain: Holistic Wellbeing. With the help of our teacher-in-charge Mrs Natasha Tay, we fleshed out a solution to help the deaf or mute translate sign language into spoken language, and built a prototype to assist in our pitch.

This experience revealed to us the entrepreneurship design-thinking process, as well as heightened our collaborative skills. As the tasks were delegated to different group members, we grew in many different ways -- some gaining mastery in 3D modelling software, some putting their graphic design skills to the test, and others applying business knowledge to evaluate the feasibility of the venture.

Groups B4 and B5 emerged 4th and 6th in positions respectively, and Group B5 also won the Most Creative Business Idea! However, beyond the achievements that we attained, we also bonded over striving for a common objective, laughed together during fringe activities, and celebrated our achievements. We fully encourage everyone to also partake in this challenge to discover friendship, innovation, and the spirit of entrepreneurship.

MGS Arts Festival MGS Arts Festival 2021 was a platform to showcase the music and art talents of the MGS (Primary) students. It also aimed to encourage and create an opportunity for MGS students to immerse themselves in art and music. Health Awareness Week

By Lea Yip (6.1) and Esther Lau (6.1) We were very excited for Health Awareness Week and were eager to see how the school would manage it with the COVID restrictions. Thankfully, it was still fun! Our school partnered up with the National Kidney Foundation and we learnt a lot about kidney health through the SLS lessons, standees and quizzes. Besides that, the P1s and P2s participated in the hulathon, P3s participated in the individual skipathon, P4s participated in the teddy bear skipathon, P5s participated in the dual skipathon and P6s participated in the Chapteh-thon. The games were avenues for us to win house points and it also ignited the house spirit in us. We enjoyed trying the P6 Chaptehton as it was something we had never done before. We leveraged one another’s strengths and learnt to kick and catch the chapteh as a team. Truly, despite the numerous challenges that COVID brought upon us, we still managed to participate meaningfully!

D.E.A.R. MGS

By Reina Tjandranegara (1.7) The annual D.E.A.R. MGS event was launched on 12 August 2021. The event was held online and by participating in the competitions, we were also able to score points for our own Houses!

The Primary One to Three pupils participated in Charactersgram. I enjoyed it because I love books and becoming one of the characters makes it even more fun. My mother and I made the crayon costume together for my book choice. I chose the yellow crayon character because it reflected my House colour. I am very happy to win for Olson.

The Primary Four and Five pupils participated in Bookstagram. They were tasked to read a book, write a review about it and post a creative photograph of the book and other items related to it on Padlet to encourage their friends to read it. I think they did a great job as the photographs were beautiful!

28th Commendation Awards Ceremony The MGS 28th Commendation Awards Ceremony (CAC) for the Primary school was held on 31 August and a total of 12 Colours, 54 Merits and 39 Distinctions were awarded to students from Gymnastics (Artistic and Rhythmic), Tennis, Tenpin Bowling, Taekwondo, Art, Brownies, Girls’ Brigade and Student Leadership (House Leaders and Prefects).

The CAC was held online and observed by all the classes from Primary One to Six. The two young emcees, Elena Madonini (P5.5) and Bethany Hope Yang (P5.2) started the CAC with a video that captured our students’ joy of learning amidst the COVID-19 situation.

Our viewers were also encouraged by the speeches of Ms Grace Ng, our Principal, and Ms Amanda Ng from the Class of 2002, an Olympian who represented Singapore in Rio 2016 (sailing) and Tokyo 2020 (sailing).

The North West Outstanding All-rounder Student Awards were presented to Kristen Su-Anne Magnus (P6.1) and Tessa Teo Yunya (P6.3). In addition, the Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-round Excellence was presented to Samantha Tan from P6.3 (2020).

Applied Learning Programme Honouring My Grandparents In Semester 2, the Primary 1 students expressed their gratitude towards their grandparents by saving their pocket money and treating them to a meal.

During their Mathematics lessons, the pupils learnt basic financial literacy like setting a budget for their meal and saving money to pay for the meal. They also learnt how to interact with their grandparents to learn more about their childhood in their Mother Tongue.

Although some students could not take their grandparents out for a meal because of the SMMs, they ordered food online and managed to have a heartwarming meal at home.

History of MGS

By Alexa Ga-Yeon Shim (4.1) From engaging in dynamic online discussions, script-writing and doing audio-recordings to playing a virtual escape game, P4 pupils explored history in new and innovative ways.

In Terms 2 and 4 in 2021, the P4 pupils worked in teams to research the history of MGS as part of our Applied Learning Programme.

(ALP). It gave us the opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of our school’s history while getting acquainted with important school artefacts.

We enjoyed researching about artefacts in the school’s Heritage Centre and getting together online to write the scripts in both English and Mother Tongue, before doing audio-recordings in both languages. Despite the occasional disagreement, we pulled through and accomplished the tasks.

Even though it was a tough experience due to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially working as a team, we learnt valuable skills through this unforgettable ALP experience.

Fun with Magnets As part of the Primary 3 ALP and STEM project, the pupils learnt about how magnets work. During STEM Workshops, they constructed magnetic levitation trains whereby they lined up the magnetic rails in parallel to make the trains repel as they move. They were keen and enthusiastic to complete the project.

Teachers’ Day

By Claudia Tang (5.4) and Natalie Chan (4.4) On 2 September, MGS celebrated Teachers’ Day to appreciate our teachers and all that they have sacrificed for us. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were not allowed to intermingle or freely roam around the compound looking for our teachers. Instead, our teachers kindly visited all the classes they taught and we were excited to greet them with gifts and cards as tokens of appreciation.

To highlight the challenges faced by our teachers, the prefects interviewed a few teachers. In the interview, we learnt more about the daily routines of the teachers and even some of their secrets!

Behind the scenes, our teachers really worked very hard for us and we are so thankful for them.

As a class gift for the form teachers, the prefects prepared personalised cork boards with decorative tiles so that every class could write notes and paste them onto the board for their teachers.

It was a lot of fun! We hoped our notes of encouragement would put a smile on our teachers’ faces. Overall, we were glad that our teachers had a meaningful Teachers’ Day.

Games Day

By Bethany Hope Yang (5.2) Games Day for the Primary 3 to 6 students was held in Term 4 Week 2 and for the Primary 1 and 2 students, it was held in Week 7 during our respective PE lessons.

Some of the games we played included dribbling the floorball and bullseye. Not only did we learn new skills that we could apply in our PE lessons, we also bonded with our House mates as we cheered one another on to earn House points.

The House Leaders worked in different groups to plan, film and edit the videos to guide our schoolmates on how to play the 8 different games during Games Day. It was an enriching experience for many of us as we learnt how to appreciate differences and tap on each other’s strengths through this project. Through the process of setting up game stations and recording videos for Games Day, we learnt the importance of perseverance, sportsmanship and teamwork. We are proud that everyone participated actively and enthusiastically and did their best to earn points for their Houses.

Children’s Day Celebration

By Kayla Lam (5.3) In early September, after a fun and memorable Teachers’ Day celebration in school, we were looking forward to the next event – Children’s Day. Unfortunately, it was announced that all primary school students had to stay home for another round of Home-Based Learning, which extended through Children’s Day on 7 October.

Despite our disappointment, all the students attended the online celebrations. We watched entertaining videos like the Pixar short, “The Birds”. We also played games within breakout rooms, such as finding objects in our home that fit specific dimensions and requirements. We hurried around in our homes, excitedly looking for the objects ranging from pens to a mask box. We were also given time to chat with our friends about our favourite outfits and got to coordinate our virtual backgrounds. It turned out that one of the most popular outfits were pajamas which was very apt for the home-based celebration we were having!

This Children’s Day was truly a unique and inaugural experience but we hope that we would not have to do that again next year!

Passion Exploration Aspiration Knowledge (PEAK) Eldan Law

By Liaw Ann Lin (4S) – class in 2021 With a valuable opportunity to intern at a law firm for our PEAK programme, the experience has been an enriching one. Although this attachment was a short one, we certainly gained many new experiences, from attending court hearings and handling legal documents to conversing with lawyers and learning about the law industry. Through PEAK, we got a taste of the working environment and experienced the professionalism of the industry. We developed soft skills such as teamwork, communication and adaptability through the challenges we faced, being inexperienced and unfamiliar with the working industry. Overcoming the fear of asking for help was crucial as it led to greater learning opportunities. We look back on this experience with gratitude, for our colleagues who always guided us patiently, for each other as that made the experience a better one, and for the personal growth evident in all of us.

Les Amis

By Jodie Poh (4G) – class in 2021 During the PEAK (Passion Exploration Aspiration Knowledge) programme, I was attached to Les Amis, one of the few 3 Star Michelin fine-dining restaurants in Singapore. Despite only being in Les Amis for a short period, I was attached to different departments of the restaurant, including the service team and pastry kitchen. Through the experience, I learnt about the importance of communication and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, especially in the kitchen. Since it is a fine-dining restaurant, presentation is also highly valued, and the attention to detail is extremely high. All in all, I believe that it has been a very valuable learning encounter for me, and I have definitely learned many new things about the flow of operation in a fine-dining restaurant.

Secondary/Year 1 Adventure Camp

By Vera Tan and Kylie Tan (2E) Last year, the Secondary 1 cohort took part in a two-day adventure camp in school after our examinations. During the camp, we participated in many activities such as outdoorcooking, tent-pitching, first-aid training and orienteering.

For most of us, our favourite activity was outdoor-cooking as we learnt the various skills needed and even ate the food we cooked! For some, it was their first time going close to a fire, giving them an entirely new experience!

From this camp, we learnt many skills outside of the classroom and through the team work we engaged in, we also grew in our values, such as those of the Fruits of the Spirit. It helped us to widen our knowledge and identify our strengths and areas of improvement too. We will indeed treasure these wonderful memories!

Year 2 Enrichment Exploratory Electives

By Phaedra Loy and Crisann Tay (3S) On 25 October 2021, four classes of Year Two students participated in the Enrichment Exploratory Electives (EEE) programme. The EEE aims to allow students to develop a multicultural understanding and international mindset by providing the opportunity to delve into the exploration of culture through both academic and hands-on activities.

During the one-day programme, we first began with an introductory lecture on the topic of understanding Indian culture, which was followed by interactive workshops on the various aspects of the culture: folk dance, Indian costumes and jewellery, as well as playing traditional percussion instruments. At the various workshops, we learnt some basic Indian dance steps and rhythms from our dance instructors and had the chance to don on the different types of Indian traditional costumes.

We had a lot of fun and laughter during the sessions!

All in all, the EEE experience was truly an unforgettable one that has taught us more about appreciating the rich racial diversity in Singapore!

“Let’s Talk about Stress”

By Choo Jing Le (4H) On 27 October 2021, seven Secondary 3 students engaged Senior Minister of State (Ministry of Health & Ministry of Communications and Information) Dr Janil Puthucheary, in a panel discussion titled “Let’s Talk about Stress”. During this special level-wide session, we explored the impact of social media, COVID-19, academic expectations, and peer pressure on our mental well-being, and looked into practical strategies for coping with stress in our daily lives. This discussion not only provided us with deeper insights into the multifaceted nature of stress, but also allowed us to improve our public-speaking and research skills. We had an amazing experience being part of the Tick Talk panel this year, and would like to thank Dr Puthucheary and the Language Arts Department for this incredible opportunity to share our views!

Passerella

‘Passerella’ (or Italian for ‘Catwalk’) was held on 28 October 2021 to end the year with fun and colour. This Independent Learning Day (ILD) task organised by the Aesthetics Department for Secondary 1 classes involved designing and creating our own costumes worn by artistes.

Facilitated by the Art and Music Representatives who conducted a class discussion via Zoom, we spent our post-examination ILD discussing plans for dressing up using the materials or clothing we could already find at home. We also planned for our class video featuring our classmates’ costumes by using video-editing apps like TikTok and iMovie, including background music of our choice.

During the event itself, there was a myriad of colours, with many of the students seen dressed as various characters, including those from musicals and shows like ‘Studio Ghibli’ and ‘Squid Game’. Many classes also took photographs of their classmates to remember this special day. There were also prizes awarded for the Best Dressed Class and Best Class Video!

‘Passerella’ really taught us that if we use our imagination, we are able to create anything without having to spend a lot of money.

In addition, it was a good opportunity for us to learn how to be resourceful and take pride in our work! It was indeed a memorable and enjoyable experience for the level.

Ms Ng’s Farewell At the end of the 2021 school year, students and staff bid farewell to Ms Ng with heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for her leadership of the school. Ms Ng had been Principal of MGS for 8 years.

Special morning assemblies on 29 October for the Secondary school and 16 November for the Primary school were held for the entire student body to mark the occasion. Ms Ng bade farewell to each level by visiting each Primary classroom where she received an assemblage of handmade cards and mementos presented to her as she made her rounds. In her parting words to the students, Ms Ng encouraged them to continue to master, to grow and to serve in every phase of their lives and to not be afraid, guiding them to Romans 8:28 with a reminder that God never made us to be imperfect.

The staff also came together and marshaled their efforts and talents to give their goodbyes to Ms Ng with much fondness and camaraderie. The MGS Board of Management, Alumnae Association, ParentLink Committee and Covenant Community Methodist Church took time in November to express their appreciation for Ms Ng’s principalship from the period of 2014-2021, which saw initiatives and advancements for the MGS education experience.

Across the various events, photo montages reflected on the past 8 years we had with Ms Ng as our principal, and tributes from the school population were organised creatively around COVID-19 constraints. The messages from all conveyed the impact Ms Ng had made on each one of us, and expressed our well wishes for her next journey beyond MGS.

2021 has been an extraordinary year as we continue to face the challenges of COVID-19. A physical exhibition was set up to showcase the works of students. However, due to Safe Management Measures, large groups of students were not allowed to gather at the exhibits.

Extraordinary challenges have the potential to spark creativity and innovation. MG Sparks!, our inaugural virtual exhibition, was held from 8 to 30 November. It featured the works of P3 to 6 students in the areas of photography, coding, ALP and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

Leadership Training Camp

By Alexis Lim (5.4) On 18 November, the prefects and House Leaders had our Leadership Training Camp (LTC) and we also took the opportunity to bid farewell to our P6 leaders.

The year-end LTC was different from what we had expected as it was conducted online and we took turns to be in charge of different segments. We had great fun leading our friends in activities such as making a team cup mascot, capturing us blowing bubbles in a photograph, and lip-reading each other while on mute to piece together a message. Through these activities, as leaders, we had to ensure everyone was involved and how we had to preserve to work together as a team to complete the activities. We also learnt that sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zone to learn new and more things.

While we hoped that our games also brought some fun to our Primary 6 seniors, we also took time to decorate personalised cards for them. As we penned down our thoughts, we were thankful and reminded of how the P6 seniors had been a blessing to us as mentors.

Peer Support Leaders Training Get Ready, Get Set, Go!

By Josephine Ho (4T) In December 2021, we welcomed a new batch of Peer Support Leaders (PSLs) who were nominated by their teachers and friends before the school year ended in 2021.

Before the new 2022 school year began, these nominees received their first PSL training session after Christmas. Our senior PSLs in Sec 4 took on the roles of group facilitators for the two-day training in school, and posed as mentors to these nominees as they began their journey as a PSL. Over the course of the two days, the nominees were introduced to the vision and mission of being a PSL. The context and scope of what it takes to be a PSL was also shared by our group of teachers in-charge who believe strongly in the mission of building a positive school culture of love where students can support one another. Additionally, during the workshop, there were meaningful discussions on issues about mental health concerns and everyone shared ideas on how they hope to better serve the school.

They also bonded with their fellow nominees and got to know the seniors. Through fun games and activities, the PSL team is now equipped with the skills necessary to reach out to others.

Welcome Mrs Wilson!

In January, MGS welcomed her new principal, Mrs Valarie Wilson.

We had the opportunity to ask Mrs Wilson a few questions to get to know her better.

Mrs Wilson stated, “As a student at MGS, I never wanted to miss a single moment at school and was keen to learn new things.” During the school holidays, she would be unhappy and feel bored as she missed her friends, teachers and school activities.

Over the different years of involvement with the school, first as a student, then as a teacher and now as Principal, she has witnessed significant changes. For example, Mrs Wilson remarked how technology has profoundly changed the learning experience. Yet through these changes, the core values of the school have stayed the same. According to Mrs Wilson, “the campus has definitely changed, but it is still has the same MGS family culture, one that is caring and loving.”

One of the MGS traditions that Mrs Wilson has benefited from is the love for music and the arts. When she was a student, Mrs Wilson was in the Music Elective Programme and the choir. She continued this passion as a teacher where she taught Music and took charge of the choir.

Now that she is leading the school, she hopes that the students will be always be open to learning. “I hope that our students will continue to stay curious, courageous, resilient, and always be willing to contribute and serve”. This reminds us of our school motto: To Master, Grow and Serve.

Staff Dedication Service As the year 2022 approached, the staff came together across the digital-physical sphere for our annual Staff Dedication Service on 29 December 2021. Reverend Dr Malcolm Tan, pastor in-charge spoke on the theme “Here, For a Purpose” and led the staff to prepare their hearts for the new school year. Staff and members from the MGS Board of Management prayed for Mrs Valarie Wilson, who took the reins of the principalship in December 2021.

Theme verse Romans 8:28 reminds us that no matter what lies ahead, there is a bigger purpose and plan for everyone who loves God, and rallies us to face challenges with hope, faith and confidence.

Additionally, MG’s own television series “Wake Up Wednesday!” was launched. By bringing the students and prefects together through enjoyable episodes of entertainment, this initiative brightens late-day mornings.

Rounding off Term 1 was our annual FAB (Friendship, Appreciation, Blessings) Week. This year, we raised funds through selling shrink-plastic key chains for the Singapore Cancer Society with the aim of blessing the community beyond MGS. Let us always remember to treasure our friendships and bless one another!

First Day of School: Level Bonding

Returning to school at the start of any school year while thinking about what the year has in store for us is always stressful, as we tend to feel a sense of nervousness and anxiety creeping up our chest. But, not to worry, because over the year-end holidays, the House Leaders prepared a series of bonding activities for the Secondary 2s to 4s to partake in when school reopened in January.

From ice-breakers to games that boosted the energy levels of the various classes, the annual Level Bonding activities were always about renewing the bonds between students. By tying the activities in with the spirit of the four Houses, the excitement for school was also rejuvenated.

The sight of students cheering for their friends who were competing in the different station games, which were conducted by our very own House Leaders, was one to behold! Despite the break from school for two months, it was evident that our MGS girls have a connection with each other that withstands the test of time.

What a better way to start the year afresh and to be energised by bringing friends together again?

particularly enjoyed the Strengths Finder Workshop which helped us further analyse our strengths, and gave us the opportunity to learn more about ourselves and our classmates. Through engaging and educational games, the class had fun while learning how to put our strengths to good use and help our classmates more effectively. We also benefited from the Self-Defence Workshop where we learnt to remain vigilant at all times and how to protect ourselves. We had an exciting and eye-opening back-toschool programme and we hope to have more of such activities again!

As we welcomed a new batch of Sec 1s to our MG family in January, the Sec 1 House Orientation was to give them an introduction to the four Houses in MGS. Through sharing the histories of the four Houses and the House system, we hope to have cultivated a sense of strong House identity among the Sec 1 students.

During the programme, House cheers were introduced to the Sec 1s, as well as the announcement of upcoming House events in 2022 to help stir up excitement among them. Games were also played to help ease the tension between their unfamiliar classmates, giving them the opportunity to interact and get to know each other better.

Although we are separated into four Houses, we hope that the Sec 1s will take away the importance of unity in our big MG family. Through the House Orientation activities, the Sec 1s have gained a deeper understanding and ignited a passion for their respective Houses. Go MG!

P1/P4 Buddy Programme

By Charlotte Joy Friedman (4.1), Sophie Le Carradus (4.5) and Claire Wong (4.5) The P1/P4 buddy programme took place during the first two weeks of school. It was an enjoyable and rewarding experience for us as we helped our Primary 1 buddy adapt to her new school environment without feeling apprehensive.

I think it is meaningful and important to have this programme because firstly, the P1s are still new to the school and were nervous and shy. Secondly, the P1s do not know their way around the school and need help knowing how to find their way around MGS without getting lost.

Thirdly, the P1s need to know the wipe-down process at the tables they are sitting at, how to queue in front of a stall, and how to pay the correct amount of money. Lastly, we need to teach our P1 buddies how to Master to Grow and Serve and we do this by leading by example. It gave the P4 pupils a sense of responsibility and it enabled us to anticipate future tasks in which we may have to lead and support our peers. This buddy system also gives the P1 pupils the opportunity to share any concerns that they may have with us who have already experienced our first step in our school lives. As P4s we remembered what it felt like when we were in P1 and we tried to put ourselves in our buddy’s shoes to help understand what our buddy is feeling.

At first, most of us felt nervous and excited to be a buddy, but after a while, we got used to it and enjoyed the experience a lot. It was really fun being a buddy and some of us wished we could stay with them until the end of Term 1. We have learnt how to be more responsible and how to make someone feel more comfortable in a place that is new to them.

IP Engagement

On 7 January 2022, the Year 4 cohort hosted the Integrated Programme (IP) Engagement, an annual event that showcases the International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile through various talks, sharing sessions, games and bonding activities. This year, the IP Engagement was carried out intra-class with Years 1 to 4 students participating actively in programmes that provided insight and guidance on how to navigate life during the six-year IP journey.

Teachers covered a wide range of topics relating to the IB Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum, including the Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) programme, as well as tips on how to create an e-portfolio to aid students in their future applications. A sharing of CAS by our MGS alumnae, Ms Eliza Khoo, was inspirational and provided much guidance on planning and executing CAS in a systematic and manageable manner.

Overall, IP Engagement 2022 is certainly a memorable and fun-filled experience for all involved. The invaluable insights gained from the activities not only strengthened friendships but also reinforced the key IB learner profile that students should strive to adopt in school and in life.

First Combined Parents’ Prayer Meeting About 65 to 75 parents with children across levels signed in to the first Combined Parents’ Prayer Meeting via Zoom on 10 January 2022. Our Principal, Mrs Valarie Wilson, also greeted the parents then and expressed her gratitude to everyone for keeping the school in prayer. The parents gave positive feedback about how it was a meaningful and fruitful time even though the meeting was held through the online platform. May we always keep the MG Family in our prayers!

Engaging Our Parent Co-Partners Coffee Chat for new MGS parents The annual Coffee Chat, an initiative by ParentLink and the school to introduce S/Y1 parents to the MGS culture and meet other parents in the MGS community, was held on 19 January 2022. This was the second year that the event was held online, and parent hosts including ex-MGS parents facilitated more than 100 parents via Zoom.

During the session, parents swapped insights and stories on guiding their MGS child in a new environment and phase of their lives, and had their concerns on the MGS schooling journey addressed. Sharings by Secondary 3 students Eve Tan and Lai Yin Wen, and parent host Germaine Leong provided a student’s and parent’s perspective respectively. The event also enabled parents to learn more about the culture and beliefs of the school, and to appreciate the parent-to-parent approach adopted

by MGS to co-create a positive school community for MGS girls to flourish in.

Welcome Breakfast for Parent Representatives The ParentLink committee held a virtual Welcome Breakfast for approximately 80 Level Reps and Class Reps on 11 February, and thoughtfully curated an appreciation pack of treats for the reps to enjoy as their breakfast.

The school affirmed the important role played by parent reps in enriching the schooling experience for all MGS girls, and thanked them for their service and partnership in creating a vibrant MGS in resonance with the staff. In having parents as culture-builders and role models to all students, the school community is strengthened. Their dedication and contribution to the growth and well-being of students is something that is most appreciated and cherished.

P1 Connect In lieu of the annual P1 Picnic, the first-ever P1 Connect was organized on Saturday 19 February 2022 from 9.30am to 11am. Taking place in the virtual space, this signature milestone event to welcome all P1 girls and their parents to the MGS family engendered much excitement and novelty with a meaningful programme put together

by ParentLink.

An activity pack was distributed to each P1 student prior to the event, and many tuned in to the Zoom session dressed according to the theme ‘Disney Heroine’ and in their class colors. It was heartwarming to see the little ones singing and dancing along with the Worship Moms and playing the Kahoot MGS trivia quiz together with their parents to know more about MGS. Everyone was happy to see their classmates and Form Teachers in the breakout rooms. Moments of the school lives of our P1s captured in photographs and video clips were shared. It was heartening to hear sharings by fellow parents both in the main room and breakout rooms. A special segment of the girls showing their appreciation to their parents ended the event meaningfully.

Altogether, it was a unique and memorable experience for our P1 families, reinforcing the ties that bind within the school community.

The Early Early Show with Team HL Term 1 House Meeting

By Valerie Wan (4S) We welcomed our MG community back to school in 2022 with our first House Meeting, aptly titled “The Early Early Show with Team HL”! We introduced the history of the four Houses in MG and the House-point system, which was a good refresher for us to strive towards earning those points for our respective Houses. The 2021-2022 House Committee members were also introduced to all students (for the benefit of the Sec 1s) and the unraveling of the House-related events for 2022 also took place during our show!

The highlight of the House Meeting would undoubtedly be the cheer segment where our Cheer Captains brought back the thrill and excitement of cheering, which we are sure many have missed. The Cheer Captains led the school with their adrenaline pumping workout early in the morning while the roving cameras went around the school capturing enthusiastic classes in action! It was truly rewarding to see everyone in high spirits and energised from the workout. We hope to be able to continue cheering and revitalising everyone with our House spirit during future House meetings!

Goodbye Mrs Karen Ivicz!

On 11 Feb 2022, the Primary school bade Mrs Karen Ivicz, our Vice-Principal a fond farewell. At flagraising which was broadcast to the classrooms via Zoom, Principal Mrs Valarie Wilson gave a short speech thanking Mrs Ivicz for her 4 years of service to MGS. The students put together a scrapbook compilation of appreciation cards designed by each class, and the staff created an embroidered artwork of Ephesians 2:10 - the verse she had shared with students at the first chapel session when she first joined the school.

The farewell for Mrs Ivicz was “ extremely memorable for me as that day started with Mrs Ivicz giving her last devotions before we bid our farewell to her. We will fondly remember the moments when she was in MGS with us. We will really miss Mrs Ivicz!

Cocoa Tree Planting

By Thee Sim Ling (3R) On 26 January, the school leaders as well as several members of our staff, students and parents accompanied MGS alumna Ms Janice Wong and her team as they planted five cocoa trees in our school compound. Ms Wong is a Singaporean pastry chef who owns 2am:dessert bar in Holland Village and launched her eponymous sweet brand in 2014. Her goal is to promote the involvement and interaction of our local communities by getting more partners to grow cocoa together.

This event also marks part of the school’s efforts to go green, in line with Singapore’s vision to transform into a greener and more sustainable city by 2030. It also showcases how MGS can unite as one community to create change, regardless of our age or involvement in the school.

We were very blessed to be given the opportunity to take part in the planting of these cocoa trees as it was truly an enriching experience.

While it involved a lot of physical work in the sizzling heat, seeing the trees planted gave us a sense of satisfaction. We are also grateful to Ms Wong and her team for taking the time to participate in this groundbreaking event with the school. We hope future generations of students at MGS will appreciate these precious cocoa trees and allow these trees to prosper under their care!

As emcees to this year’s fun and educational LNY programme, we were very grateful for the chance to give back to the school in such a manner. This experience was not without its obstacles. As this was our first time hosting a school-wide event, we found ourselves feeling nervous at times. However, with the careful guidance of the dedicated teachers from the Mother Tongue Department, we managed to host the event with enthusiasm and it was a huge success! Kudos to the teachers!

Through this experience, we learnt to speak more confidently in front of a large group of people. Most importantly, it also allowed us to learn how to be flexible when adapting to any unpredictable situations. As emcees, we also had to research a wide range of topics related to LNY customs, which really helped us to better understand our roots.

Students from all classes also participated in a hamper packaging competition and this allowed us to use our creativity to design the gift packs which were presented to the unsung frontline heroes who have been contributing to our school.

We hope that everyone enjoyed the LNY celebration and learnt something new too!

Throughout the day, everyone was in a festive mood. The day was indeed packed with many meaningful activities that helped us learn more about Chinese culture.

CCMC-MGS Lunar Celebration

By Caroline Chao (2E) On 11 February, eighteen scholars participated in the Lunar New Year celebrations jointly organised by the Covenant Community Methodist Church (CCMC) and MGS. Numerous exhilarating activities took place, from the humorous ice-breakers to the alluring performances.

Thanks to everyone’s meticulous planning and hard work, the event was a huge success.

My favourite part was singing and dancing to “We’re All in this Together” from the musical “High School Musical”.

As choreographer, I had the responsibility of rallying the Malaysian scholars for the performance. Beyond sharpening my leadership and communication skills, I treasured the time I spent with my fellow scholars, as the event strengthened our bonds even more than we could have imagined. I will never forget the nights we spent at our boarding school’s playground tiringly rehearsing our dance to perfection.

A note of appreciation goes out to CCMC for hosting some of us during this festive season. This had been a memorable part of the year -- one that I will cherish forever!

MGS Biathlon As part of alternative arrangements made for the MGS Inter-house Swimming and Cross Country Championships 2022, the PE Department organised inter-house events during the Swimming PE programme of the respective levels.

Friendship Week

By Elena Madonini (6.5) and Alethea Chan (6.3) “Ohana means Family” - This was the theme of our Friendship Week this year because we wanted all MGS girls to feel like they belonged to one big MG family. We hoped that we could all practise loving others by reaching out to others first even if they did not respond to us.

As a school, we wrote encouraging notes to our classmates, hoping to reach out to those we seldom interacted with.

During Chapel, the Prefects also shared the bible story of Zacchaeus to highlight Jesus’ example in being a friend.

The Student Leaders also took the initiative and shared Chinese New Year snacks with the cleaning aunties, canteen vendors and security guards because we felt that we wanted to be a friend to our school’s invisible heroes.

Friendship week was indeed memorable for us. We were glad we could model the way of being inclusive and being a blessing to the community.

Forming house-based teams, each member alternated between running and swimming, competing to be the first team to complete the race. This was followed by a mass swim, where each team tried to swim as many laps as possible within the allotted fifteen minutes.

It was exhilarating seeing the determination reflected in each participant fill the atmosphere with a pulsing surge of friendly competition.

What I loved most was the warmth of sportsmanship and inter-house unity as we cheered for our classmates! Our blazing flame of house pride made this event a highly memorable one!

Farmers’ Market

On 15 February, all Sec 2 students had a chance to meet eight different local farmers in MGS! We also got to listen to these local farmers about their journey in sustainable food

With a lack of land space in land-scarce Singapore, local farmers rely heavily on the use of technology to ensure the healthy growth of crops and increase food production.

Farming local produce is a big step as Singapore strives towards achieving our goal of meeting 30% of Singapore’s nutritional needs from local farms by 2030.

During the event, we focused on how the MGS community can play our part in sustainable living by making some wise food choices, such as reducing carbon and water footprint by consuming more local products even though we have to pay a few more cents due to higher labour costs. When we help to increase demand, then the local farmers can increase the supply of these local produce and their business will also grow. We can all make a big impact to reduce our carbon footprint by taking such simple steps now!

2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore to the Japanese during World War II. To commemorate this poignant event that we now call Total Defence Day, the school organised assembly programmes that helped students of the different levels better understand Singapore’s efforts in keeping the nation safe, especially in the area of food security.

The lower secondary students learnt about food sustainability, which culminated in a fun and hands-on task of planting and caring for pots of microgreens. In the upper secondary classes, Citizenship Education (CE) Representatives were tasked to conduct a presentation on the current sources of food that Singapore relies on, as well as safeguarding our food security. During the sharing, CE Representatives also explained the risk of severe food shortages if the supply chains are disrupted since more than 90% of Singapore’s food is imported.

Aptly, the theme for Total Defence Day this year is “Together We Keep Singapore Strong”, which reminds us that it is crucial for us to play his or her part in strengthening our unity, resilience, and resolve when facing future threats. When every Singaporean plays his or her part, our collective efforts form a strong defence against the unseen challenges that lay ahead.

Ulu Pandan PostBudget Dialogue

The Post-Budget Dialogue kicked off with a video screening of a summary of the budget in both English and Mandarin.

It was a humbling experience for the both of us as we were able to see the public’s opinions on the Budget and how it might affect their future. We also got to see how Mr de Souza deftly answered the various questions and allayed his residents’ concerns. Through this Post-Budget Dialogue, we learnt that the government is constantly making decisions for the benefit of Singaporeans and have been actively rolling out schemes to help Singaporeans cushion the impact of the rising costs of living in the coming years.

House Meeting

By Naomi Lam (6.2) Every Friday is House Day but on 11 March, it was a special Friday as we held our House Meet for the first time over Zoom. Everyone was involved in activities competing for House points like playing games like “Queen of Sheba”.

There was much fun and laughter in our classes. The points we earned for our House allowed our captains to compete in the school game, “House Tower”. To our surprise, despite earning the least number of points from the class game, Blackmore emerged as the eventual winner!

Most think that the House Meet is just for fun but as House Leaders, we hope to involve everybody to uplift the House spirit. We learnt that teamwork is very important too. We had to think on our feet and learn to cooperate.

Soundscape Poetry

By Tricia Quah (3G) and Samantha Lee (3R) Last year, when we were in Sec 2, we embarked on this journey of creating a soundscape for a video during our Music lessons, and through this, we learnt a variety of skills, such as how to work the Soundtrap interface and how to modify sounds to make the soundscape more realistic. We had to source for sounds, or even manually record them in order to achieve a decent piece of music that suited the video.

To complement our soundscapes, during our Language Arts lessons, we were tasked to write a poem which could accompany our respective soundscapes. It was rather challenging doing so as we ran into issues when writing the poem; the concept of marine life was hard to conceive. Thus, we had to learn how to creatively tweak our soundscapes and poems to seamlessly complement each other.

To combat the alarming rise in domestic fires, we turned to origami. Navigating this hidden world of folds and axioms, we applied the Origami Flasher fold to a fire blanket. Such a fire blanket can be deployed in half the time, and still collapses for compact storage. One of our teams who came up with this ingenious idea clinched a Silver with Excellent Presentation.

Turning comfortable retirement dreams into reality may seem daunting, but not with calculus and Python. Our other team engineered a code which predicts one’s CPF retirement output based on current spending, and thus, easing the process of retirement planning. This thoughtful project was well received by the judges, earning a Bronze with Excellent Presentation.

Sandwich Making Competition

Celebrating our Hawker Culture & Heroes

To pay homage to Singapore Hawker Culture, we participated in the Sandwich-Making Competition (16th Edition) organised by Keat Hong Community Club’s Women’s Executive Committee (WEC) & YoRipe last year.

Our students, Tricia Quah and Emma Chong, created the ‘Chilli Crab Sandwich’, which consists of handmade crab cake served with freshly steamed lotus leaf buns. The flavour of the sandwich is an explosion of spicy, tangy and seafood flavours and the texture is also complex, yet tantalising. Another pair of our students, Kirtanaa Kalaimahan and Grace Huang, creatively prepared the ‘On-the-Go Rojak Sandwich’ with authentic ingredients such as torch ginger and shrimp paste for the ‘rojak’ and even made their own fried dough!

Taekwondo Championships

By Elizabeth Chew (6.4) On 28 April, I took part in the National School Games (NSG) Taekwondo Championships 2021 and won 3rd place in the Senior Division Girls Poomsae Individual Poom 1. It was my first time participating in the competition as the one last year was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In preparation for the competition, I trained two to three times a week with my coach and did stretching exercises every day to keep myself flexible.

On that day, I woke up earlier than I had to because I was anxious and excited at the same time. I was worried that I would forget my steps and perform poorly. However, thanks to my mother’s and coach’s assurance, I felt more confident and calm.

The competition was an eye-opening experience for me. I learnt the value of hardwork and discipline.

This would not have

been possible without the encouragement of my parents and teachers who wished me good luck and guidance from my coach.

IDEAS eBOX flash sales

In aid of SengKang Hospital Health Growth Fund

For a better customer’s shopping experience and acquisition of authentic marketing and selling skills, IDEAS (Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship, Art for Society) launched our eBOX flash sales in April and September 2021.

The highlight for our club was the Teachers’ Day eBOX flash sales on 1 September. Despite safe-distancing restrictions, IDEAS managed to work together creatively to create our own handcrafted products such as terrariums, stickers and air plant paperweights. The sale event was a great success with overwhelming support from MG staff and students. Many came forward to buy the lovely Teachers’ Day presents for their teachers, and gifts for friends and family.

This entrepreneurial project was also in aid of Sengkang Hospital’s Health Growth Fund. True to our club’s mission, “Expressing through Innovation and Blessing through Creation”, we are so glad that our artistic talents, time and effort have been channelled to help those who are in need.

VISUALISE 2030!

The inaugural 2021 Data Storytelling Inter-school Coding Competition was jointly organised by Methodist Girls’ School (Secondary) and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP). With close to 100 participants with a total of 23 entries, the competition concluded on a high note in October 2021.

Participants were tasked to create a data-driven digital story in teams on the Scratch platform. The objective was to share insights on climate change through the use of data, while adhering closely to the problem statement: How can technology and code help achieve Singapore’s longterm goal of net-zero emissions?

A talk by Environmental Researcher Ms Jeanette Choong helped set the context and kickstarted the competition.

In the process, participants gained much from the masterclasses conducted by the MGS Infocomm Club and they were also mentored through several consultation sessions by NYP. We thank the schools for the enthusiastic participation in “Visualise 2030!” and would like to congratulate all the prize recipients!

Live On Design Competition

The competition aims to spread awareness on organ donation, as well as to provide youths in Singapore with the opportunity to express their thoughts on organ donation through art and writing.

We are proud to announce that three of our members won top prizes in 2021’s competition! Lim Yi Xuan, Joey Lai Sze Kit and Germaine Toh Si Xuan clinched the First, Fourth, and Distinction awards respectively.

Through participation in this competition, IDEAS has learnt to count our blessings and pay it forward. We are grateful to have served the society with our artistic talent. We hope to inspire and encourage others with our artistic expression of the themes “Bridge of Hope” and “In Search of Hope”.

RippleUx Coding Competition

The competition required us to make a Virtual Reality game or scene then present it via zoom. We made a game about Sleeping Beauty and one has to save her from the evil witch. You will need to go through the floor of lava parkour and then go through the maze to save Sleeping Beauty. There are some secrets that you can find in the maze that may help you. We were surprised yet happy to find out we won second place. It was a good experience for us.

‘Project TCC’ (The Caring Connection) was a book-collection

The second aim was to conduct a book-sale to raise funds for Project Dignity’s community efforts that include providing vocational training for people with disabilities so that they can be employed by the F&B industry.

We are thankful for the overwhelming support we received. We started with a target of 1000 books, but eventually collected more than 3000 books! Our book-sale also managed to raise $687.60. Indeed, we have learnt that giving to a good cause can truly spark joy in a person.

Mother’s Day with A Twist II

By Laura Lang (3R) and Jewel Ong (3S) Mother’s Day with a Twist first started in 2020, and due to its great success, in 2021, we followed up with a second instalment of the event. We organised a fundraiser where we sold products to the student population and donated the money raised to Catholic Family Life (CFL). The fundraiser was organised with the goal to bless single mothers, specifically Catholife Family Life’s beneficiaries, on Mother’s Day. We sold products that included customised scrapbooks and accessories, and folded origami flower bouquets for the single mothers.

The heightened alert period and safe-distancing measures due to the ongoing pandemic posed great difficulty for us in carrying out a live booth sale. However, we adapted and used online means to raise funds instead. We continued to press on and waited for the measures to loosen before distributing our items. In the end, we managed to raise a total of $130 and blessed the single mothers on Mother’s Day.

Contemporary Art Collaboration with SPD and SAM Soft Toys Exhibition

By Liang Ruiyi (3S), Tricia Quah (3G), Chloe Lee (3R) and Kritika Tewari (3S) Inspired by contemporary artist Vincete Delgardo’s artwork titled ‘We are Family’, our team decided to adapt his artwork by using soft toys to show that harmony within a family and community can be beautiful amidst a sea of individual differences, preferences and imperfections.

In this contemporary art collaboration with the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and SPD (Serving People with Disability) last year, the children were taught to draw their favourite animals using regular shapes such as ovals, triangles and rectangles. The student-buddies from MGS then recreated the children’s two-dimensional animal forms into a three-dimensional soft toy. The creation process was also environmentally friendly as used clothings is upcycled as stuffing in each of these soft toys.

Through this project, we have learnt so much. Firstly, we had to pick up sewing skills. Secondly, it has also shed a new light on us as we worked with the enthusiastic young children from SPD. It is really heartwarming to see their finished soft-toy products, each with their own unique personalities.

In this pandemic, the elderly form one of the most vulnerable groups. It has also become increasingly difficult for children to visit their aged parents at St Luke’s ElderCare.

As such, we decided to embark on a project to bring some cheer and cater to the wellbeing of the elderly there.

Bethany Nursing Home MGS was invited to continue their partnership with Bethany Nursing Home to be a channel of blessing to the destitute and isolated seniors in Bethany Home especially during the recent COVID-19 pandemic where the residents are not allowed visitors.

The MGS family swung into action and put together a Christmas party package for the residents and staff of Bethany Nursing Home. The staff of the primary section packed goodie bags for both the residents and the staff for the party. Craft materials were also prepared for the decoration of the residences in Bethany. The staff of the secondary section got beautifully-wrapped hampers ready as prizes for the “Best Dressed Competition” held during the Christmas party.

To top it all, an e-Christmas programme comprising performances by students, parent volunteers and teachers was planned for the party.

The Christmas party was held on 22 December for the residents at the Home and although we were not able to join them for the party, we believe that the residents will enjoy the e-Christmas programme and items we had prepared for them.

Read for Books

As a school, we clocked in enough hours for 385 books to be donated to charity! It was a very meaningful experience and I hope we can do this again because we can help people in need by just reading our favourite books.
