High School Musical Fun Facts • The High School Musical movie brought in Disney Channel’s highest number of viewers at its time (January 2006) with 7.7 million in its premiere broadcast. • The school’s original mascot was going to be a leopard, but it was changed to a wildcat. • High School Musical: The Movie was one of the first movies to be sold on the iTunes store. • Zac Efron who played Troy in the movie version did not actually sing most of the songs in the movie. The producers wanted a tenor to match the character, and Efron’s voice was too low. His singing voice was that of Andrew Seeley. • The film was originally a 1999 script for Grease 3. The children of Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsen from the 1978 film Grease were to be played by Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. With a plot more similar to ‘High School Musical’ but with more characteristics like ‘Grease,’ the character Sharpay was to be the daughter of Betty Rizzo. The members of N’Sync were to have supporting roles, and John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John allegedly were approached for cameo roles. The project was shelved until 2004. • High School Musical 4: East Meets West will be directed by Jeffrey Hornaday and is estimated to air on the Disney Channel in the fall of 2010. • The High School Musical soundtrack was made in five days and has sold over three million copies. • High School Musical: Sing It game can be played on wii, Playstation 2, and Nintendo DS • High School Musical: The Junior Novel was released in June 2006 and there is a series based on the movie called Stories from East High. • High School Musical 2 grossed 17.5 million viewers making it the highest rated original cable telecast of its time, even beating Monday Night Football for its time slot.
