Production History The idea for Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story originally came to Englishman Laurie Mansfield as he was sipping pints in an old countryside pub in England. What began as a fun thought about a musical paying tribute to legendary rock ‘n roller Buddy Holly later developed into an award-winning Broadway production with a highly successful London production and international tour. Mansfield’s idea was developed by director Rob Bettinson with help from playwright Alan Janes, musical arranger Paul Jury and designers Andy Walmsley, Rick Price and Graham McLusky, The innovative creative team crafted what would become, in time, the first in a line of biographical rock musicals Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story originally opened on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre on November 4, 1990, with Paul Hipp playing the leading role. The production ran for a total of 225 performances and closed on May 19th, 1991. Buddy rocked the UK with its premiere at The Plymouth Royal Theatre in London where it had an unrivaled run of 9 years with over 3,000 performances.

Buddy’s Legacy Buddy Holly was truly a pioneer in the music business. His career, while short, served to inspire numerous future music legends. Here’s a short list of artists who credited Holly as an influence on their music: The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Waylon Jennings, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Elton John, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon.

Behind the Story Fun Facts • Born Charles Hardin Holley, Buddy’s parents decided the name was too long for “such a little boy” so they began calling him Buddy and the name stuck. • Buddy Holly’s last name was actually spelled Holley. A misspelling on a record contract in 1956 prompted Buddy to leave the error alone. • Buddy Holly’s first solo album, aptly titled Buddy Holly, has a very unusual feature. The cover depicts Holly without his glasses. The truth is that early on in his career. Buddy often went without glasses or wore contact lenses. Biographer John Beecher reported that it wasn’t until Holly had dropped a guitar pick and was unable to find it that he began to wear the trademark frames. • Buddy would have celebrated his 70th birthday this September. • The Crickets were the first all-white band to play the famous Apollo Theater in New York City. • Buddy Holly asked his wife Maria Elena Santiago to marry him on their first dinner date; she accepted. • In 1960, a young group of men from England called The Quarry Men chose to rename themselves, in part, as an homage to Buddy Holly and the Crickets. That group was The Beatles. • Waylon Jennings was supposed to be on the fatal flight, but gave his seat up to the Big Bopper.
