Matthew Gibson, a dedicated student at Clemson University, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture with a Minor in Sustainability.

Beyond architecture, Matthew finds joy in outdoor activities, fitness, and diverse forms of artistic expression, both in 2D and 3D. Proficient in pencil and pen drawings, as well as watercolor, acrylic, and oil paintings, he also possesses skills in woodworking, leatherworking, and metalworking. As a result, Matthew recently established his own Fine Art LLC to sell his work professionally and gain insights into financial management.

BATHHOUSE

Interplay of Light and Shadows Individual Project Fall 2023

This bathhouse program presents a space that was visually intriguing and allows its patrons to feel connected to their natural surroundings. To achieve these goals, these buildings combine the use of acute shadows, large curtain windows, ruled surfaces, and sun shades. The simplicity of this concept allows the patrons to find a sense of relaxation aside from their chaotic day-to-day life.

The design of both the roof and the sun shades on the facade draws inspiration from the fluidity of waves. This wave-like architecture finds a harmonious connection with the undulating patterns observed in the pools, creating a captivating and cohesive synthesis.

Concerning the physical model, a combination of laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC milling were used to produce a precise rendition of the bathhouse program at a scale of 1’ = 1/8”. The most captivating aspect of the model’s creation was the topography.

Layers of plywood were carefully glued so that a CNC machine could selectively remove material, revealing the intricacies of the topography that was designed.

TECTONIC A N A LY S I S International Rugby Museum Individual Project Spring 2024

For this project, students were challenged to understand bricks as an architectural tectonic—where the material is systematically (and poetically) integrated into the means and method of construction. After selecting our precedent, we needed to gather as much information as possible on how the building was constructed.

After extensive research, hand sketching, and structural analysis, we were tasked to design a way to graphically communicate what we learned. Construction pictures were especially useful in learning about the components found within the wall.

OBJECT AS WALL Analysis of a Fly Fishing Reel Individual Project Summer 2023

For this project, students were tasked to select a handheld object with moving components.

I chose a vintage fly fishing reel. I started by analyzing its form and geometries, identifying sections on three axes to establish spatial relationships. After analyzing the different sections, a wall was constructed from the shapes presented.

The constructed wall in the courtyard between Lee and Lowry Halls transforms the space into an interactive community area, suitable for breaks, studying, and conversations.

BIRDHOUSE Catering to the Northern Flicker Individual Project Summer 2023

For this assignment, each student was assigned the responsibility of selecting a bird and constructing a suitable birdhouse that catered to the specific needs of their chosen avian client. My chosen bird was the Northern Flicker, a type of woodpecker.

Given that woodpeckers typically inhabit tree cavities, my goal was to replicate the natural cavity environment by designing a birdhouse that seamlessly blended into the tree where it was positioned. Additionally, I explored various placement methods to ensure the creation of a sustainable and harmonious addition to the tree crevice.

After sculpting the initial form of the birdhouse, indentations were delicately carved into its sides, facilitating a snug placement within the natural embrace of the fork of two large branches. This thoughtful design eliminates the need for traditional installation methods like nails or rope, offering a non-invasive and ecofriendly solution for the birds.

DRAWI NG From an early age, I’ve found immense joy in the art of creation, particularly through the method of illustration. My initial interest began with pencil drawing, until I moved into using ink where I explored intricate details. My drawings often gravitate towards portraying structures and architecture.

PAI NT I NG On my artistic journey, I have also explored painting, with a particular passion for oil paints. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills, delving into the intricacies of color theory and mastering the representation of shadows to breathe life into my canvases. One of my true passions lies in capturing the beauty of landscapes, where I find inspiration from the interplay of light and shadows.

PHOTOGRAPHY Alongside my artistic journey, I have also developed a passion for photography. In my perspective, photography serves as a lens through which we can perceive the world differently, freezing moments in time for contemplation. Frequently, my paintings draw inspiration from the captivating scenes captured through my lens, creating a dynamic interaction between the visual narratives of my photographs and the strokes on canvas.
