Dear Jazz and Blues Fans: Recently I celebrated 7 years of living in Chiriqui. As most of you know I am a foreigner in this province, I came from Panama City and decided to work in the cultural area. I have developed a lot of cultural projects, but the one I consider most important is the Boquete Jazz Festival. This has been a great experience for me in the last 6 years. At the beginning it was especially hard because without having any resources Anayansi Menendez and me had to work hard alone in order to have success with our first festival. Since then the path was easier, but it still is difficult to find enough sponsors because of the small amount of public we have and the high cost of bringing many great artists to the Festival. With the help of Paul Day and a great group of volunteers, we managed to have our 5th Jazz Festival last year. This year the enlarged Jazz & Blues Festival only became possible through the hard work of the dynamic and enthusiastic Hans Lebuser, who again managed to summon the help of a large group of
Estimado Jazz y Blues aficionados: Hace poco celebró 7 años de vivir en Chiriquí. Como muchos de ustedes saben soy un extranjero en esta provincia, que venía de la ciudad de Panamá y decidió trabajar en el área cultural. He desarrollado una gran cantidad de proyectos culturales, pero el que considero más importante es el Festival de Jazz de Boquete. Esta ha sido una gran experiencia para mí en los últimos 6 años. Al principio fue especialmente duro, porque sin tener los recursos Anayansi Menéndez y yo tenía que trabajar duro solamente para tener éxito con nuestro primer festival. Desde entonces, el camino era más fácil, pero todavía es difícil encontrar patrocinadores suficientes, debido a la poca cantidad de público que tenemos y el alto costo de traer grandes artistas para el Festival. Con la ayuda de Paul Day y un gran grupo de voluntarios, logramos tener nuestro quinto Festival de Jazz el año pasado. Este año, el Jazz & Blues Festival ampliada sólo se hizo posible gracias al arduo trabajo de la dinámica y entusiasta Hans Lebuser , que una vez más logró convocar a la ayuda de un
volunteers. If I ever met someone with a great heart and love for music it is Hans, and I am happy he has had the energy to make this festival possible. This is my last festival in Boquete, I am working in other cultural projects in David, and I think there are lots of persons in Boquete who can continue this effort for having this cultural event every year. We have a formal and legal structure, and we will continue to have volunteers that can make this possible. From this moment on the Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival belongs to the community of Boquete, this is my gift for the support for the past six years. Thanks to all you great jazz and blues fans, thanks for making this festival possible, and thanks to all the volunteers without whom we would never have had a music festival in Boquete. Dear Antonio, it is not easy to find the right words to thank you for all you have done for the cultural life in Boquete and Hans & Antonio Chiriqui. You have toiled diligently for six years to create and maintain the annual Boquete Jazz Festival. You now passed the torch onto me, and only after having experienced the extremely hard work myself that is necessary to put a festival like this together I am able to really understand and appreciate the immense amount of time and labour you have invested in creating this wonderful gift you are now handing over to the Boquete community It is sad to see you leave this project but we won't let you go without embracing you and thanking you from the depths of our hearts! The Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival Foundation is a non-commercial, all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization. We are doing this work for the love of music, and to enhance cultural life in our community. Our vision is to firmly place Boquete on the national and international map of Jazz and Blues events that are not to be missed. Our mission is to promote the musical arts and tourism in the Chiriqui highlands and beyond by attracting growing numbers of Panamanian as well as international music-aficionados to this beautiful area. Our dedication is to support musical education at schools in the Boquete area. To this end 30% of the festival proceeds will be used to buy musical instruments and improve musical education in schools. Remaining funds will be saved for future festivals. Nuestra visión es la de colocar a Boquete firmemente en el mapa nacional e internacional de Jazz y Blues y que todo el mundo quiera asistir a las actuaciones. Nuestra misión es promover el arte musical y el turismo en las tierras altas de Chiriquí ademas de atraer a un número cada vez mayor de aficionados a la musica , de Panamá y destinos internacionales a esta hermosa tierra.. Nuestra dedicación es apoyar la educación musical en las escuelas en el área de Boquete. Con este fin el 30% de las ganancias del festival serán utilizadas para comprar instrumentos musicales y mejorar la calidad de la educación musical en las escuelas. Los fondos restantes se guardan para futuros festivales.
Estimado Antonio, no es fácil encontrar las palabras adecuadas para darle las gracias por todo lo que ha hecho para la vida cultural en Boquete y Chiriquí. Usted ha trabajado con diligencia durante seis años para crear y mantener el Festival de Jazz de Boquete anual. Mitch Woods is a master of the 88's, hammering out boogie-woogie and jump blues like nobody else. With his band the 'Rocket 88' he has travelled widely to festivals in the US, Europe and Japan,and is featured regularly on the Legendary Rhythm&Blues Cruise. He will come to Panama from San Francisco as a solo artist for the first time. Andy Egert, winner of the "Best Swiss Blues Band" Award 2010, and multiple award-winning Chicago bass-player Bob Stroger, one of the few old Chicago bluesmen that are still with us are another highlight of the Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival. For both of them it will be their first visit to Panama.
Johnny Sansone (New Orleans) has established himself as a practitioner of hardcore wrecking-ball power Chicago blues, with his massive harmonica tone recalling Windy City giants Big Walter and Little Walter but he'll also cook a delicious New Orleans Zydeco Gumbo when picking up his accordion.
Ron Hacker has been singing and playing the blues in the San Francisco Bay area for more than 40 years. He doesn't just play the blues, he has been living the blues all his life. Ron has toured extensively in Europe playing major festivals in Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland, Germany, and Norway. He will come to Boquete as a solo artist. It will be his first visit to Panama. Carlos Ubarte is one of Panama's most well-known and sought after saxophonists. He and his quartet have performed at the Boquete Jazz Festival in February 2011. We are happy to have this exceptional musician and his band back in Boquete again!
Idania Dowman is Panama's "Lady of Jazz". She was raised in a musical family. Her father "Lord" Byron Dowman is famous in the musical scene of all genres of Panama. Currently Idania is the lead singer of the Panama Jazz Effects band. At the Boquete festival she will be singing in Carlos Ubarte's band.

Saskia Laroo (Netherlands), hailed by the American public and press at large as „ Lady Miles of Europe", is one of the few women trumpet stylists, having blown the horn for more than three decades. She had already garnered much experience in Latin jazz before forming the Jazzkia band playing different genres of Caribbean, Latin and Afro music such as calypso, cumbia, salsa, merengue, soca, kaseko. Jazzkia brings a lively mix of these and the newest styles, blended with jazz. Betty Bryant (Los Angeles) is either a singer who plays piano or a pianist who sings. Each listener seems to have an opinion one way or the other. The truth is, even at age 82 she seems to do either with equal facility. We are very happy being able to present this pioneer of black female musicians in Jazz at the Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival!

Rigoberto Coba (sax) is a wellknown professor of music from David in Chiriqui province in Panama. He usually performs with his excellent quartet but for our festival he will put together a big band with 17 of the best musicians of Chiriqui province. We are very happy to give these great local musicians the chance to perform at our festival!
