old Weetbix! But tell me, did it ever cross your mind that there was another brand out there? One that looks, and supposedly alters in taste to the one we all know and love. Well I’ll tell you what, I didn’t!

Weetbix vs Weetabix

You see, my revelation that there was such a thing as Weetabix (spelt slightly differently) began in the June of 2024 I was on holiday in Barcelona, feeling marginally homesick and very, very hot. The Spanish summers are not forgiving! That's when I wound up wandering aimlessly through supermarket stores, aisles after aisle, bottle of chocolate milk after chocolate milk, trying to make sense of “What on earth do these labels actually mean! (My spanish vocabulary was very limited to Hola and gracias ) Then I saw it, Weetabix, although it wasn't Weetbix was it? The packaging looked different, the biscuit itself appeared different, the nutritional content was different. Plus to me its texture and taste was different. Before long it became my holiday breakfast obsession, as even though eating authentic, freshly made French croissants with butter and jam was a delectable breakfast choice, four weeks of it wasn't the healthiest!

Nevertheless, even though I preferred the taste of Weetabix to Weetbix, my brothers profusely disagreed, so why not find out what was the verdict back home. That's when I I did what any sane person would do, buy a box, protect the fragile biscuits from crushing by wrapping it up in multiple layers of my clothes, fly it halfway around the world, and keep it hidden in my wardrobe so that my teenage brothers wouldn't gobble it all up for themselves.

My initial idea for this experiment was that I would compare the different brands in two ways, nutritionally and physically. This

meant I’d rope in five of my reluctant peers to try half of each type, and tell me their thoughts on the taste, texture and smell. I wanted to see if they could tell the difference, and which brand they preferred. Proving whether or not they were realistically the weetbix connoisseurs they lend themselves to believe.

Additionally, I’d like to point out the marketing and boxes of each product looks entirely different. Whilst weetabix comes in a bright yellow box, a shade similar to Chemist Warehouse, featuring a blue logo on a slant. Weetbix is marketed in a dark blue box with a white label. As well as this the biscuits themselves appear quite dissimilar. Weetbix is more of a square biscuit made out of chunker shards of wheat, whilst Weetabix appears to be more finely ground, and comes in the form of a rounded biscuit. Due to this factor, all my testers had to be blindfolded, which proved to be a little bit of a problem later on.

To discover whether Weetbix, or Weetabix boded better on the nutritional front. To make an equal comparison I had to look at the nutritional content of each food group in the per 100g column, this is because generally the serving size for different foods differs. From this I learnt that not only does Weetbix have less calories, saturated fat, carbohydrates, fibre, sodium and sugar content than Weetabix But a higher amount of Vitamin B1, B2, B3 and Folate. Both products have the same amount of protein and Weetabix, has a slightly higher Iron content. Overall, Weetbix is better for our bodies, but which ones are better for our taste buds?

Weetbix vs Weetabix

Now this was the part of the test I’d been most looking forward to, getting to put my thoughts and ideas to practice. The equipment required included a plate/bowl, milk, a blindfold, half of each variety of cereal, and one of my unlucky friends . As you can imagine it was a bit awkward carrying all of these things into school, and I do wonder what people thought of me when I pulled milk out of my locker!

Anyway, the experiment sought of ran a little like this:

-Firstly I’d sit the tester down and after a little chat I'd ask them some introductory and necessary background questions.

-Secondly they’d put the blindfold on. (Usually whilst giggling or looking really concerned and unsure.)

-Thirdly I’d break a chunk off, soak it in a bit of milk (I didn't really measure how much.) then shove it in their mouth as quickly as possible. Sometimes this didn't work, and missed, and the table got to have a little taster as well.

-And finally I asked them a few more questions like which one they preferred, which one was which, and whether they guessed right or wrong.

The results showed that 5/5 of all participants don't eat Weetbix as regular breakfast food

⅘ of the participants do like the taste of Weetbix

⅗ of the participants prefer Weetabix to Weetbix

⅗ of the participants guessed correctly

I definitely had a lot of fun carrying out this experiment. However the highlight for me was when Sam Pickering somehow spilled, and covered the milk right down her uniform. We all threw ourselves into a fit of laughter! In conclusion, the evidence shows that Weetbix is by far the more nutritionally dense option whilst Weetabix tastes slightly better. So which one do you think you would prefer, maybe you could write it down on your bucket list to buy a box if you ever find yourself in Europe!

Speaking of Hollywood

Butterflies, whether nerves or excitement, were in full flight as colors, ruffles, sparkles and jewels waltzed into the room Fingers were crossed in hopes that tonight would live up to the stories told by older students Did it deliver? Everyone I spoke to definitely thought so Dazzling lights, a booming sound system and an invigorating atmosphere, the 2024 Semi formal was an awesome experience.

Speaking of Hollywood, school dances have been made pop culture events due to the films and media coverage of America’s infamous prom Sometimes portrayed as a wholesome setting where the guy gets the girl and best friends make up Or alternatively the vicious totem pole of social status and prom king and queen. These falsified portrayals are so different in comparison and yet the experience still made us feel like we were in a movie. The liveliness of youth spiked the air like punch and fuelled the hours of socializing We felt like the night would never end and we didn't want it to

My personal highlight of the night was the noticeable comradery and uplifting amongst teenagers. Showers of compliments and praises lifted moods and freshened confidence Girls who weren't in the same circles felt joy in tapping each other on the shoulder and shouting over the music “Girl you look amazing!” The atmosphere behavior like this creates, embodies

the sisterhood persona that our school encourages. A sudden pride sparked when witnessing this and I came to school the next day with a spring in my step, a rather late spring after a much needed sleep in, but a spring nonetheless

When the lights came on, and the chauffers showed up, party goers said their goodbyes with a bittersweet departure Girls walked off, heels in hand, giggling away The event was done, but the effects carried on, and the following Friday was a lively end to the week

Students buzzed and excitedly recounted how the night was for them When asked, they said “I loved the flow of the indoor and outdoor spaces I enjoyed the fact that it was just our year group The comfort of familiar faces made it more fun.” Not only that but the caged dance floor was a hit. “It encouraged group dancing” and made the space feel less empty and awkward. The atmosphere got a mention as being “enjoyable” and I couldn't agree more.

This night was one fit for future reminisce, which in my opinion, is all we could have hoped for.

The Events and Promotion Manutaki did a fantastic job setting up this event. We also owe our thanks to the teachers supervising throughout the night The older seniors who attended did an amazing job covering photography, food and beverages and even just hyping us up, can't thank you enough Finally those in finance handling tickets and the year 11 dean Mrs Taetuli for handling any mishaps We really appreciate you setting up an amazing experience for us

MAD DUO Dances to the World Stage

In early May 2024, the amazing hip hop duo consisting of Sam Marfell ( year 11 ) and Immy Giles ( year 12 ) from MGC, better known as the MAD DUO, achieved a significant milestone by securing a major win at the New Zealand Hip-Hop Championship, ‘HipHop Unite’ It is a key competition in the New Zealand hip-hop scene, the event brings together some of the nation’s most skilled hip-hop dances The duo’s success is a testament to their hard work, skill, and passion for dance

Sam and Immy have been duo partners for dancing for just over 4 years. It is a partnership that has grown them into one of the country's most exciting and innovative hip hop duos. With time, they have gathered a large amount of medals and titles within various hip hop comps, and I'm sure there are still many to come. They share their knowledge and passion for dance with the younger generation of dancers at ‘Marlborough Academy of dance” where the pair are both very dedicated students and teachers. Their students and fellow dancers often look up to them for their technical skills and creativity, choreography and commitment to the art of dance.

Their recent success 'HipHop Unite' was not a trivial win, but a start to an exhilarating new chapter of their dance adventure. After their magnificent performance, it was announced that the MAD DUO had been chosen to represent New Zealand at the World 'HipHop Unite' Championships in Portugal. This is a great honour, as the contest will bring together talented dancers from 17 different countries, all of whom have proven themselves in qualifying rounds in their home countries. The World Championships are scheduled for the 24th - 26th of October, 2024, and the pair fly to Portugal on October 18.

The MAD DUO’s main goal at the World Championships is to pass the preliminary round and make it to the semi-finals. Achieving this would put them among the top 20 hip hop duos from all over the globe which is an amazing accomplishment for the duo. However, many challenges come with this. While their dance choreography, which leans heavily towards theatrical performance, has set them apart in New Zealand but there may be a different outcome on the world stage The judges at the World Championships may lean towards technique and precision over theatricality, so this makes it even more crucial for Sam and Immy to make sure that all of their moves, energy and synchronization is perfect

The duo remains optimistic, despite these challenges Sam humorously notes that her biggest challenge in the duo is "getting lower while dancing because Immy is so short," while Immy comes back that hers is "wearing bright colours to match Sam’s red hair " Their light-hearted banter reflects their strong bond, undoubtedly contributing to their success

Sam and Immy have been fundraising at various dance competitions and local events throughout New Zealand to support their journey to Portugal The hip hop showcase which was held on the 22nd of September in the MBC hall, which was the most noteworthy of them all, allowed all of the hip hop dancers from Marlborough academy of dance to show off their incredible hip hop skills

As the World Championships approach quicker, excitement continues to build for the MAD DUO and the Marlborough hip-hop community Sam and Immy’s journey to Portugal is not just a personal achievement, it is a source of pride for all who care about them and have supported the pair You can follow along with their hip hop jounrney on instagram - @the mad duo123 We wish the pair the best of luck as they take on the world’s best in Portugal, break a leg, MAD DUO!

MGC’S COOL CAT CHAT

What do you think of the recent Moosie Inflation at the MGC canteen?

Lilly Taylor Year: 9

Age: 13

Answer: I think it is too expensive for what it is. I’ll still buy them though.

Brooke Goodsir Year: 9

Age: I’m 13 but turn 14 in 24 days

Answer: They should have left it at $2.50 because now at $3 people won't buy it any more. It is not worth $3, that's too expensive!

Claudia Ryan Year: 9

Age: 14

Answer: I can't buy garlic bread and a moosie for $5 anymore, cause sometimes I just have that $5 note you know.

Maddie Thomas Year: 9

Age:13

Answer: Very, very bad!

Evelyne Harrison Year: 9

Age: 13

Answer: I hate it, they should be two dollars, they need to go down.

Saphera Best Year: 9

Age: 13

Answer: I feel like it's a scam and I could properly buy a whole bag for the price of two moosies here. They better make the price two dollars honestly

Mrs Lloyd’s Exam Advice

Sylvie Crowe

With exam season drawing near, our senior students are looking for hot-off-thepress advice to help them absolutely nail their NCEA exams. We sat down with MGC’s own Mrs Lloyd to hear her ideas.

Don't leave study until the last minute, start weeks before the exam! Build a routine, and don’t overwork yourself, study well for a couple of blocks a day. Figure out what study style works for you, are you a visual learner, or do you remember things better when you write them down?

Have a proper diet - eat a cooked breakfast with high protein before your exam!

Don’t distract yourself - hair back, clean desk

Get up a few hours before your exam. Don’t drink too much water, you don’t want to have to get up to go to the toilet a million times throughout the exam! If you’re feeling unmotivated, suck it up and do it, build good habits! Get to the exam early, and know where you’re meant to be.
