The Link is an afterschool community program for children ages 5-18 located in Eugene. The program provides music, dance instruction, theater and performance as a means to improve students’ academic, social and personal abilities through learning, sharing and collaborating. The Link is a non-profit public organization, mostly funded through grants and donations to make it available to all families. Based on the nature of the program, the proximity to nearby businesses generates an ideal location. The Link will be a new interior built environment that the broader community in Eugene will identify as a safe and fun place for the youth to inhabit, and will also be intriguing and exciting. There is a great demand for a facility that provides after school services to the Eugene community. From the hours of three to six in the evening, children who are left alone and unsupervised are at a higher risk of making destructive choices that may lead to drug abuse, drinking, teen pregnancy, crime, and other life threatening activities.1 Though Eugene offers community organizations like the YMCA and The Shedd Institute Music Academy, there is no specific after school program that targets these at-risk youth. This program will have a positive impact on Eugene by providing a “way-out” for the youth who are headed towards making wrong decisions. This proposal investigates how community youth programs impact learning through facilitating creative expression and how music, dance and performance help students grow socially and academically. The development of this facility will contribute to the rehabilitation of downtown and will create a sustaining relationship with the greater community. This program will use the performing arts as a connective tissue between professionals and artists in the community to the youth. The Link teaches and uses the arts in this program as a tool to help these kids ultimately succeed in life.
