ASTROLOGY 101 What is Astrology?

Astrology is a science not a religion. It is “the study of patterns of movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as reflecting the potential of human affairs and the natural world” (Futurism Media). Astrology maps the heavens at the moment of your birth, so skilled astrologers can read the potential of your life. The stars we see at night reflect the affairs on earth or the potential of them. There are four main types of Astrology: Natal, Horoscope, Synastry, and Horary.

Who started studying Astrology?

The Babylonians created one of the original forms of astrology in 3000 BC, but some experts date astrology back to over 5000 years.

Cultures that have had a large interest in astrology include Central America, India, China, Greece, North African, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Most of the astrology we study today comes from Hellenistic astrology that developed during the 4th century by blending concepts from Babylonian and Egyptian scientists.

What are horoscopes and how do they work?

Horoscopes are the astrological diagrams that show the position of the sun, moon, and main planets. Horoscopes can be made at any time and it will be suggestive of the astral disposition at that time. The most popular types of horoscopes use birth charts that reveal the position of the planets at the time of

someone’s birth and is said to define that person’s personality and life path.

Natal Astrology: Natal Astrology uses the movement of birth to draw a map of the heavens and shows the potential of a person’s life. This style helps people learn things about their personality, talents, and possibilities based off their zodiac sign

Horoscope Astrology: Horoscope Astrology studies current experiences. Horoscope Astrologers look at charts to see where the planets are on a given day. Planet positions indicate events and possibilities in your day to day life. (Futurism Media)

Synastry Astrology: Synastry Astrology is the study of relationship strength. This is done by overlaying one natal chart on another and analyzing how the planets intermingle. This is most often used for romantic endeavors.

Horary Astrology: Horary Astrology, also known as predictive astrology, is one of the most ancient forms. The astrologer is asked a question and draws a chart instantly. They are then able to answer or present possibilities for resolution of the question.

TAROT CARDS What Are Tarot Cards?

“Tarot cards are decks of cards with pictures, symbols, words, and numbers printed or painted on them…they are supposed to be able to tell the story of the past, give clarity and insight into the present, and predict the future” (Building Beautiful Souls) Tarot card readers are not necessarily psychics; they are people who know how to identify the different types of cards and apply them to people’s lives. Tarot is not intended to answer specific yes or no questions, and it shouldn’t be used to make decisions, but instead should be used as a guide to help make the decision yourself . Tarot decks are made up of two sets of cards: the Minor Arcana and the Major Arrcana.

How Are Astrology and Tarot Connected?

Zodiac signs and readings focus more on planets and their positioning, while tarot focuses on the mythical power of the astral world. Astrology plays a major role in the interpretation of the cards and the meanings in tarot. One of the biggest links between astrology and tarot is the Order of the Golden Dawn, an esoteric order that connects astrology spirituality. Several tarot decks have cards that connect to this order, and this explains why tarot often looks like a constellation.

The Minor Arcana includes four suits: wands, swords, cups, and circles or pentacles. Each suit has a meaning reading a specific approach to life. Minor Arcana cards represent the more minor, practical daily ups and downs in life.

The major arcana is not associated with suits; they include the picture cards that represent principles, concepts, and ideals. The cards are numbered one through twenty-one with a 22nd card (known as “the fool�) marked as zero.

derstanding about how much people know about astrology, zodiac signs, and horoscopes. The results indicate a decent understanding about astrology across the table, however, there are some individuals

who know quite a bit, and others who do not even know what a horoscope is. The level of understanding and commitment to check up on astrology often indicates the length of which people actually believe in the science behind astrology. From this, it can be concurred that the senior class has a decent understanding of what astrology is and how it works. Whether or not they believe it is accurate is a different story.

ACCURACY Obviously there is a lot of controversy regarding the accuracy of horoscopes and zodiac signs. From the information I gathered and my personal in-depth analysis of astrology, I decided to put zodiac sign accuracy to the test by creating a ten question quiz for every single zodiac sign. Each quiz featured questions addressing values, descriptive adjectives, potential careers, and more. Many of the questions pertained to relationships, social settings, home life, and interests. I attempted to phrase each question in an unbiased fashion, and tried to ask questions that could easily indicate whether or not a person is actually similar to their stereotypical zodiac sign. From there, I

gathered a list of every student in the senior class’s zodiac sign and sent each sign their personalized survey. After the majority of students completed their surveys, I analyzed the similarities and differences between our grade and their stereotypical zodiac signs. This allowed me to make conclusions about the general accuracy of astrology. Throughout the next few pages, you will find the results from my surveys and the conclusions I was able to draw from them.

ACCURACY For four weeks I read my weekly horoscope on Horoscope.com. At the end of each week I reflected upon the similarities and differences between the Sagittarius horoscope predictions and my personal week. Going in I was a little skeptical as to whether or not my horoscope would actually be applicable to my life; however, I was surprised to discover that my horoscope addressed many different aspects of my life. Career, love, health, and home life were some of the most popular topics discussed in the horoscopes. I was shocked to discover that my horoscope was typically pretty accurate. I was expecting about half of it to be accurate, but almost all of it was applicable to my life and current situation. My main concern was I found after four weeks of reading my horoscope that they can be pretty vague. It seemed like the astrologist was just writing about topics that could be applicable to many different people’s lives.

I glanced at some of the other zodiac sign’s weekly horoscopes as well and they seemed to have if not similar information, similarly written ideas. As far as overall accuracy goes, I would say that horoscopes can be pretty accurate, but they are lacking the precision needed to fully address the issues in everyone’s life. Overall, I was happy I took the time to include this in my research and definitely could see my self checking my horoscope more often.

CONCLUSIONS I found my research very worth-while, intriguing, and rewarding. I personally have never been a huge believer in zodiac signs having certain characteristics, but after learning more about my sign and interviewing others, I definitely understand the simi-

larities and appeals to checking your zodiac sign and horoscope. Like the horoscopes, I found that the characteristics of every zodiac sign can be somewhat vague, and you really have to work to make it applicable to your life. I found in my procedure and test that many people are similar to their zodiac signs. Whether or not that is a consequence or actually true we may never know; however, I did find it interesting how people reacted when I told them how similar they were to their stereotypical zodiac sign. Some people would say “oh yeah I am totally like *zodiac sign* “ and others would respond with “I did not think I was anything like that.” What I found to be really intriguing was the persistence and dedication some students had to checking their horoscopes. Even people who doubt astrology check their horoscopes! This brings up the question: so why do people check it if they don’t believe in it? I think this boils down to some of the key principles behind astrology. People like to keep up with their horoscopes because it provides balance in their life. They count on something every day or every week to tell them what could happen. For those who don’t like surprises or like to be prepared for every situation, horoscopes are a great way to predict what

could come ahead. Other people enjoy checking horoscopes because of the explanation aspect. If something goes wrong or doesn’t make sense, a zodiac sign, tarot card, or horoscope can offer some sort of insight that someone is seeking. It is hard to come to a final answer at the end of all of this, but I can safely say that there is definitely some truth in astrology and zodiac signs. Anyone who thinks otherwise can do some research.
