Dear colleagues,
In my first job in the financial department at the predecessor of MF Shipping Group, I was content with my life and could never have dreamed of becoming a business owner. When the opportunity arose to take over the company with - at that time - two partners, I could not have imagined how our company would flourish and grow into the wonderful company that it is today. In 2001, after a management buy-out, Theo, my valued business partner of almost 25 years, joined and we are now proudly celebrating our 30th anniversary. We have had many highlights, but as in life, we have also experienced less favourable times. We look back with pride on our success, resilience, and long track record, which we attribute to our loyal partners and colleagues ashore and on board of the vessels.
From the very beginning, our vision was to treat our colleagues, customers and partners as family and to build long-term relationships
From the very beginning, our vision was to treat our colleagues, customers and partners as family and to build longterm relationships. This special bond, which could be called family, is still part of MF Shipping Group’s DNA 30 years later. Combined with caring for each other and going the extra mile, it is the foundation of our success. We believe in the power of people - their creativity, resilience and passion. It is this belief that inspires us to work together, face challenges and celebrate success. Whether we are delivering quality services, pursuing innovation or nurturing these strong relationships, we do it together, as one unique family.
While we take time this year to look back, we never stop looking forward. For example, environmental issues and innovative technology solutions to improve business processes and stay ahead of legislation and regulations, for example, are always high on our agenda.
25 is silver, 50 is gold. 30 years of MF Shipping Group as a pearl is certainly worth celebrating. We celebrated this anniversary in various locations, from bustling Istanbul to the idyllic beaches of the Philippines and, of course, in our home port of Delfzijl. And where better to celebrate this milestone than amidst the beautiful tall ships and nautical atmophsere of Delfsail. For an impression, see page 24. For those who could not attend the Company Days, a delicious meal was arranged on board on 14 June. We have received some nice photos, take a look on page 38. Thank you all for your efforts to make this a memorable celebration!
As we celebrate our anniversary, we would like to take a moment to express our gratitude for the loyal and long-standing partnership with our valued customers. Our incredible journey over the past 30 years would not have been possible without their continued trust and support. We are also extremely grateful to have celebrated this anniversary with our valued colleagues, both at sea and ashore. It is your hard work and dedication that has made MF Shipping Group what it is today.
Let us continue to build our common future together and achieve many more beautiful and safe nautical miles and milestones. Whether you have been with MFSG for 30 years or just a few, whether you work in the office or on board, thank you for your efforts, trust and loyalty.

Voyage to Greenland: A seafarer’s story
In May 2024, the crew of the mv Cyprus Cement embarked on a journey to a destination many of us had only heard of in passing: Greenland. Captain Mikhaeil Sidorenko shared his memories of this remarkable voyage.
We had a vague idea that Greenland was a faraway place covered in ice and snow, and none of us had ever set foot there before. Naturally, there was a mixture of excitement and apprehension as we embarked on this long journey, anticipating freezing temperatures, possible storms and the ever-present threat of hitting icebergs.
Arriving in the port of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, we breathed a collective sigh of relief. The sleepless nights of navigating through fog, ice and challenging weather were behind us. At last we could bask in the serene beauty that Greenland has to offer. The picturesque weather and extended stay in port gave us ample opportunity to explore and appreciate this unique place. Our phones quickly filled up with stunning photos and we were overwhelmed with positive emotions. Curious about the crew’s impressions, I asked them to share their thoughts on what they liked, what surprised them and what might have been less enjoyable. Their answers were encouraging, reflecting a shared sense of wonder and admiration for Greenland.
C/O Sergey Nedvigin commented: “It’s a good experience with polar water, ice and iceberg navigation. Good pictures of nature”.
C/E Oleg Krivchenko found the voyage both fascinating and educational. “Ice, icebergs, whales, this is a very interesting and educational voyage. Far away, cold Greenland is a curious place, friendly people,” he noted.
3/E Maksim Lysikov was fascinated by the pristine environment. “A very interesting place with clean sea, fresh air and quiet people. It is very good that I visited this country”.
2/O Dwight Riel was in awe of the landscape. “Greenland is a place I have never seen before. Never in my imagination did I expect such wonderful and wonderful scenery - cool breezes, amazing iceberg formations, glamorous and colourful houses,
attractive and very pleasing rocks and mountain formations. So captivating and admirable”.
2/O Andreo Panta shared his sense of awe. “When I visited Greenland, my first impression was one of awe at the pristine beauty of the landscape and the vast ice-covered terrain.”
Fitter Samuel Soronio found Greenland to be a land of incomparable beauty. “Greenland is a land of unparalleled beauty and wonder, welcoming me with its landscapes, towering mountains and pristine Arctic wilderness. Interacting with local communities, learning about their traditions and tasting traditional cuisine was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that left me in awe of the raw beauty and majesty of this Arctic wonderland”.
AB Roy Flores described it succinctly: “Fantastic place, beautiful view, not man-made, but God’s creation”.
AB Marc Cebreros praised the tranquillity of Nuuk: “An underrated city. A must for its tranquillity, with scenic views perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beauty of nature”.
OS Leemar Dionaldo described Nuuk as the coolest city he had ever visited. “Stunning views and friendly people. Wish I had more time to explore the city”.
Cook Reynaldo Pagtulon echoed these sentiments. “Nice place, especially the view. Probably the coolest city with friendly people”.
We brought home more than just photographs from Greenland. We brought back a treasure of good memories and pleasant emotions that will stay with us forever. This trip, challenging as it was, proved to be an unforgettable adventure filled with awe and admiration for the raw, untamed beauty of Greenland.

Setting sail together:
25 years of cooperation between Falkvarv and MF Shipping Group
This year 16 of our technically managed vessels are planned for a yard period at Falkvarv, the shipyard located in Falkenberg Sweden. Since Falkvarv has been our trusted drydock and yard repair partner for over 25 years, we took the opportunity to interview both the previous CEO, Jan Olof Carlsson, and the current CEO, Stefan Tengvall.
Could you tell us a little more about Falkvarv?
Falkvarv AB was founded in 1987, but shipyard operations including new constructions and repairs have been present at the location since 1946. Today we current focus on repair, maintenance and conversion and constantly adapting to our customers’ demands and preferences. We continually strive to develop our business towards higher quality and shorter lay-up times and still have short and fast decision-making paths.
What message would you like to convey to potential customers and partners about your yard’s capabilities, values and commitment to excellence in the maritime industry?
Falkvarv has the capacity to drydock vessels up to 150 meters in length. We dry dock about 70 vessels per year and the majority of them are tankers and dry cargo vessels but special service crafts and tugboats are common.
Our operation is characterized by high capacity and technical competence. We aiming to have a small and efficient administrative organization that keeps decision-making paths short.
Can you discuss your commitment to sustainability and environmental considerations in shipbuilding and maintenance? How does this fit in with MFSG’s values and objectives?
At Falkvarv, we have long been committed to the environment and are now making a strategic effort in our sustainability work to accelerate the climate transition and reduce our carbon emissions. We are certified according to ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015, with the former being an environmental management system that helps us focus on the right things when it comes to planning, implementation, follow-up, and continuous improvement of our environmental work. Treatment of wash water and increasing the capacity of green shore power are example of what we currently are doing along with starting a program of exchanging older diesel engines for more environmentally friendly options.
Can you tell us more about the longstanding relationship and cooperation between Falkvarv and MFSG?
The cooperation and relationship between MFSG and Falkvarv leads us back to October 1998, when the mv Nordanhav, owned by Erik Thun Group AB, was one of the first technically managed vessels by MF Shipping Group. She entered the drydock at Falkenberg under the supervision of the leading superintendent Rudi van het Oever.
Once more vessels came into the technical management, more of these vessels entered our shipyard. Jan Olof remembers that the 2nd time MFSG brought the ships to their yard, was in 2001 where he met Ivo Ramakers during a warranty drydock of the then named Bro Grace. The Grace, her sister vessels and their superintendents kept returning to our shipyard, for the Thun Grace even up to the last survey before she was handed over to her new owners. Now every year we see multiple vessels which are managed by MFSG entering our yard. Where we greet familiar and new faces both onboard and as Superintendents by ensuring these projects turn in to a joint success.
The cooperation and relationship between MFSG and Falkvarv leads us back to October 1998, when the mv Nordanhav, owned by Erik Thun Group AB, entered the drydock at Falkenberg
How do you ensure effective communication and coordination between Falkvarv and MFSG?
We do not see any cultural differences between the Superintendents from MFSG and our own employees. On regular basis the management levels of both companies visit each other to ensure we meet each other requirements and learn from the challenges we have faced together.
What specific projects or initiatives have you worked on with MFSG? Can you share any notable successes or challenges you’ve faced together?
We have executed the full conversion of Bornholm and Gotland from general cargo to a cement carrier. This is the largest project MFSG and Falkvarv has cooperated on, especially since the conversions were done simultaneously.
This project included a complete new cargo discharge system, by means of scrapers, bucket elevator, hopper and a blow tank. To accomplish this, a separate cargo room had to be created where the winches, bucket elevator, hopper, blow tank and filter fan could be installed. The CO2 had to be modified to fit the diesel engine driven cargo compressor. The hatches were modified with loading points to be able to load the cement with closed hatches.
Up to this day, the maintenance periods and drydocks of Gotland and Bornholm are done here at Falkvarv, where the expertise of the discharge systems can still be found in our personnel and we know exactly how to resolve all issues that occur. We have our own stock of spares required, and if any additional parts or materials are needed we have very short lines with local suppliers, resulting in an efficient repair period.
Are there any unique aspects of your collaboration that set it apart from other partnerships in the industry?
Falkvarv and MFSG know each other very well. The lines of contact are very short, everybody knows who to contact on certain topics, and there is a very cooperative understanding for both our workloads. Also the yard and their personnel has a low retention rate meaning that the yard workers who did the first drydocking’s of MFSG managed vessels are still involved in the current drydocking’s of these vessels. These good cooperation, where you could almost say we treat each other like colleagues is shown by the fact that MFSG and Thun have a fixed office in the Falkvarv main building, where the superintendents can have meetings and do their administration in quiet and Wi-Fi covered area.
It is worth mentioning that we always invite the MFSGsuperintendents to our after work meet-ups. In the past years we have seen them joining in on bowling nights, air rifle and barbeque evenings. Lately we even watched the launching of the new Thun Tanker vessel Thun Reliance, together with all crew from MFSG and Falkvarv here in our Canteen, guided by some lovely cakes.
During these after work activities, the superintendents can relax a little after the intense and long working days they are facing, while they meet up with all yard personnel in a less official setting which only have resulted in a better work environment for all personnel involved.
In the past this was also seen. During a long project where MFSG shipping was involved, one our employees arranged a BBQ at this house. Since Ola Persson from Thun and Wim Mulder from Wisby Tankers were also at the shipyard at the same time they were all invited to join in. Everybody who was present during this barbecue is still talking about the great time they had and we see that they all stayed in close contact with each other over the years. Therefore it was great for us to see Wim Mulder has returned to the shipyard as a superintendent of MFSG docking in Thun owned vessels.
How do you ensure effective communication and coordination between Falkvarv and MFSG? How do you overcome potential challenges related to distance and cultural differences?
We do not see any cultural differences between the superintendents from MFSG and our own employees. On regular basis the management levels of both companies visit each other to ensure we meet each other requirements and learn from the challenges we have faced together.
How do you approach innovation and technology adoption within your yard?
The applicable class rules are well known by the personnel involved from the yard on projects, but we also encourage our clients who have their ships alongside and in the drydock to run on our provided shore power to keep the environmental footprint as low as possible.
Also, we will do our outmost to ensure the works will be fully compliant with class and flag rules. A great examples are our foreman’s who advice our clients that they will need a class approved valves in certain positions in the ships before ordering the valves or installing valves from the ships stock. In means of innovation and taking a lead for environmental improvements we have just cooperated on a Foam exchange on the Thun Granite, where we, in collaboration with our trusted partner FireSpect, ensured the collection and destruction of the old Foam which contained PFOS and ensured the tank was fully cleaned to be able to fill with full PFOS free foam as per upcoming class regulations in force in 2026. The destruction and cleaning was done up to the latest standards and conducted with the highest care for human and environment.
Can you discuss your commitment to sustainability and environmental considerations in shipbuilding and maintenance?
At Falkvarv, we have long been committed to the environment and are now making a strategic effort in our sustainability work to accelerate the climate transition and reduce our carbon emissions. We are certified according to ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015, with the former being an environmental management system that helps us focus on the right things when it comes to planning, implementation, follow-up,
and continuous improvement of our environmental work. Treatment of wash water and increasing the capacity of green shore power are example of what we currently are doing along with starting a program of exchanging older diesel engines for more environmentally friendly options.
Are there any future projects or developments on the horizon for your yard?
We are in the near future making an sustainability report and are aiming to be the obvious option when it comes to a ship owner to choosing a shipyard.
Since we are based close to the city center one of our challenge is to coexist with apartments that coming closer and closer to the yard. We focus on good cooperation with the city council and local authority and are relying on approval from them for any changes we want to do at the yard. We currently trying to renew and expand our workshops and hoping to start the building work 2024/25.
We also continuing increasing the capacity of inhouse 3D modeling, project managing, sales and quotation to be able to assist our clients in the best kind of way.

Thank you for your hard work and loyalty, Alexey!
Cook E. Lopez
Cook Erick Lopez made his first voyage aboard mv Stefan K. in 2011. Since then he has served many hungry seafarers both on other K&T vessels and on the Thun dry cargo. Erick is a very good cook, a friendly colleague and the food he prepares is first class. As we all know, good food is the key to a good atmosphere on board, so the role of a good cook should never be underestimated.
Thank you for your loyalty and dedication Erick, we hope to continue our good working relationship for many years to come!
From the hands of Master Aleksei Uzliakov of mv Alice, 2/O Andro Reandino received his 12.5 year anniversary gifts. Andro started as a deck cadet on mv Ice Star before his first contract as an AB on mv Ostgard in 2011. In addition to mv Alice, he has worked on various dry cargo vessels in Thun over the years. Andro is a professional seafarer and a very positive man who is a pleasure to work with. His colleagues hope that he will soon be promoted to chief mate on one of our vessels. He is ready for the position. Fun fact: Andro is also a very nice guitar player and singer!

The Technical, Environmental, Quality, and Crew Departments had the opportunity to look back on the past and forward to the future, reflecting on achievements and setting new goals. Discussions emphasised our commitment to creating a socially safe organisation for everyone, with zero tolerance for bullying, harassment, and discrimination. We reaffirmed our stance against corruption and bribery, emphasising integrity in all our operations.
2024 marked a significant milestone for MF Shipping Group: we celebrated our 30th anniversary. During the Company Days, we held celebrations in Turkey, the Philippines, and the Netherlands, bringing together our team from sea and office to connect, learn, and party.
A major focus was on lessons learned from incidents over the past year. While we strive for zero incidents, we acknowledge that where people work, things sometimes go wrong, causing harm to people or damage to materials. Could these incidents have been prevented? Perhaps danger was seen, but nothing was said. We encouraged everyone to “Speak Up” for everyone’s safety, reinforcing the importance of a proactive approach to risk management.
These lessons were addressed in an interactive manner, using workshops and group discussions to engage everyone. By sharing real-life scenarios and encouraging open dialogue,
we ensured that the lessons were not just heard but understood and internalised by all participants.
We were honoured to have Karen Waltham as our external speaker. Her session on communication was insightful, covering topics like the iceberg theory, giving feedback, and the traffic light system. She provided us with valuable tools for reflection and effective communication.
The Company Days were not all about serious discussions. We also enjoyed meeting each other, engaging in team activities, and having fun. It was a time of joy and festivity, bringing together colleagues from sea and shore in a shared celebration of our journey and successes.
We enjoyed meeting each other, engaging in team activities, and having
fun
As we look to the future, we are excited to continue our journey together, committed to safety, sustainability, and excellence. Here’s to many more years of shared success and growth with MF Shipping Group!
Luckily, we still have the pictures to cherish these memories!

His enthusiasm for the maritime life has not faded and he remains committed to his profession.
Changes Over Time
Kwan has seen significant changes in the industry over the past three decades. “The most significant change has been the introduction of stricter regulations aimed at improving safety, environmental protection and operational standards within the industry,” he said.
But Kwan has also faced many personal challenges during his career; “My greatest challenge has been to navigate through periods of industry uncertainty while maintaining the operational stability and profitability of the company,” he reflected. His calm and systematic approach to problem solving has been instrumental in overcoming these hurdles.
As an experienced seafarer, Kwan understands the importance of leadership in maintaining a motivated crew. “I believe in leading by example, promoting open communication, and recognising and rewarding crew members’ achievements to foster a motivated and engaged team,” he explained.
Personal reflections
Kwan has fond memories of his first voyage with MF Shipping Group on the MV Oliver. “My first voyage was an exhilarating experience filled with excitement, anticipation and a sense of adventure as I embarked on a new chapter in my career,” he recalls.
Outside of work, Kwan enjoys several hobbies; “I enjoy spending time outdoors, reading and engaging in activities that promote relaxation and personal well-being,” he said. These activities provide a balance to his demanding career at sea.
Vision for the future
Looking ahead, Kwan envisions a continued role within the shipping industry. “I see myself continuing in the industry, possibly in a mentoring or advisory capacity, leveraging my wealth of experience to guide the next generation of maritime professionals,” he shared. Kwan is optimistic about the future of shipping, “The future of shipping will likely be shaped by advancements in technology, sustainability initiatives, and evolving global trade patterns, necessitating continuous adaptation and innovation,” he said.
As Kwan reflects on his 30-year journey with MF Shipping Group, he expresses gratitude and optimism for the future. “I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of MF Shipping Group’s journey for the past 30 years and look forward to continued collaboration and success in the years to come,” he concluded.
I believe in leading by example, promoting open communication, and recognising and rewarding crew members’ achievements to foster a motivated and engaged team
Tackling Corruption in Maritime Trade: MF Shipping Group’s Commitment
In today’s interconnected global economy, the smooth flow of ships and goods through ports is crucial to the prosperity of businesses and societies worldwide. With over 80% of the world’s trade carried by sea, ports play a pivotal role. However, administrative control in ports can sometimes lead to corruption, with officials demanding bribes for routine tasks.
MF Shipping Group remains steadfast in its commitment to combat this pervasive problem. JanKees, Chief Quality Officer of MF Shipping Group and member of the Maritime AntiCorruption Network (MACN), underlines our commitment to ethical practices and transparency in maritime operations.
Jankees Metzlar Chief Quality Officer
“I attended the MACN Spring Members Meeting on 24 and 25 April at Moltkes Palæ in Copenhagen. The meeting included plenary sessions and workshops with a record number of 230 participants. Highlights included updates on Collective Action efforts in Egypt and discussions with the Suez Canal Authority on navigating the Canal, vessel preparation and MACN’s role in addressing unethical demands. The plenary sessions provided insights from IMO and MoU representatives on industry challenges and opportunities related to PSC inspections.”
Key Highlights from “CPH_ MemberMeeting_2024_FullNotes”:
• Whistleblower Protection: Growing recognition of the importance of protecting whistleblowers was emphasized, with Jonathan Taylor’s case highlighting systematic corruption and prompting interactive sessions on whistleblowing practices.
• MACN Activities in Egypt: Updates from the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) and MACN’s local partner, Eldib Pandi, included collaborative efforts with signed MoUs in 2023 and planned agreements with Egypt’s Maritime Transport Sector (MTS) in 2024. MACN’s Helpdesk facilitated feedback on new mooring procedures and introduced mandatory forms for master-pilot exchanges.
• Next Steps: Vessels are required to notify MACN’s Helpdesk before arrival, report any unprofessional pilot behavior promptly, and strictly adhere to the Rules of Navigation (articles 11-29).
Challenges in Port State Control
(PSC)
Inspections:
• Lack of Standardization: Varying practices among port states lead to subjective and inconsistent inspections.
• Inadequate Reporting and Data Management: Poor processes for reporting, managing data, and verifying compliance complicate inspections.
• Commercial Pressure vs. Ethical Standards: Stakeholders’ prioritization of financial gains over safety and compliance creates conflicts.
• Support for Crew: A blame culture and insufficient support make it difficult for crews to resist unethical practices without risking operational issues.
• Bureaucratic and Legal Obstacles: Conflicts between local laws and international regulations undermine PSC inspection effectiveness.
• Human Factors: Corruption, bribery, harassment, and poor communication contribute to unethical practices within the industry.
• Long-term Consequences: Decreased vessel tradability and financial losses question the effectiveness of the current PSC system.
Our actions:
• We maintain a zero-tolerance approach to bribery and unethical behavior, enforcing strict policies to deter misconduct.
• We work closely with organizations like MACN and P&I Clubs to address challenges collectively and invest in PSC inspector training for improved compliance.
• Meticulous recording, including a detailed deficiency database and accurate vessel certification, allows us to keep a close eye on operations and resolve any problems quickly. Considering number of cases are virtually nil for us, we do not use technology such as body cameras and CCTV for objective evidence for the time being.
• We foster transparency through proactive incident reporting and open communication among stakeholders, swiftly addressing any unethical practices to uphold ethical standards.
• We provide information and resources to empower you during inspections, ensuring they can assert their rights confidently, for example during our Company Days and this Fleetlog.

Preem’s path to excellence: chartering
Thun Reliance
for climate-neutral refinery progress
On 3 May the Thun Reliance was launched and christened by godmother Camilla Dimberg, Preem’s representative. This new tanker will sail for fuel company Preem.
Let’s take this opportunity to get to know this valued partner of Thun Tankers. We had the pleasure of talking to Daniel Berndolf, head of the shipping department at Preem AB.
Can you give us a brief introduction to Preem and its activities?
Preem commands approximately 80 percent of the Swedish production capacity, and approximately half of the nation’s liquid fuel consumption is derived from Preem.
At present, we are executing an extensive transition endeavor, wherein the gradual displacement of fossil fuels in favor of renewable alternatives is underway. This transition is being meticulously orchestrated to ensure the continuity and dependability of fuel supply both domestically in Sweden and internationally.
What makes Preem different from other fuel companies, in Sweden and/or internationally?
We have set forth a definitive objective: Preem is poised to become one of the pioneering climate-neutral refinery enterprises globally. As the foremost producer of advanced renewable fuels in Scandinavia and the premier refining entity in the Nordic region, our dedication to augmenting renewable fuel production and distribution remains unwavering. Simultaneously, we are steadfastly committed to preserving our competitive edge through the inception and execution of renewable fuel initiatives. The metamorphosis of our business framework stands as a paramount priority in the realization of our overarching strategic vision.
Can you tell us more about the collaboration between Preem and Thun Tankers? Why did you choose Thun, how long has this cooperation been going on and which vessels are involved?
Maritime transport constitutes a pivotal component of Preem’s operational framework, within which we consistently endeavor to enhance efficiency and environmental stewardship in collaboration with our esteemed suppliers. Hence, we are honored and gratified to extend our longstanding partnership with Thun Tankers by incorporating another of their vessels into our expanding fleet of long-term chartered tonnage, a collaboration that goes back to 2012 when Thun Tankers was founded.
How do you perceive MF Shipping Group as a ship manager (responsible for the technical, crew and quality management) of the tankers? What aspects are significant to you in this partnership?
MF Shipping group is regarded as a shipping manager of high quality which is important in every aspect of our business from everyday safety for the crew, environment and cargo to the assurance that should an issue occur we know that they will do their utmost to find a rapid solution in order to minimize any loss.
What actions and measures is Preem for example taking to optimise environmental transport of its products?
Preem strive to have a modern and effective fleet and are always looking to reducing ballast legs and optimize cargo intake to reduce the environmental impact from our transports. We utilize various IT-solutions to aid us in this but most of all we have committed and experienced employees doing their best to raise the bar every day.
Safety is always at the top of our game and we always appreciate MF Shippings rapid and resolute response to our needs
How can Preem minimise the environmental impact during the supply chain of its products)?
Preem finds itself at the forefront of the energy transition, transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable and electrified sources. We are currently managing multiple billion-dollar projects in the Västra Götaland region, all executed in alignment with a meticulously structured plan aimed at achieving the delivery of climate-neutral energy and material products essential for the demands of the bioeconomy.
To facilitate this endeavor, we are committing significant investments amounting to billions in the conversion of our refineries, with a primary focus on the production of renewable fuels catering to a diverse range of transportation modes, including airplanes, vessels, automobiles, trucks, and various other vehicles.
How does Thun’s transition to more sustainable vessels with battery power, shore power and reduced bunker consumption affect you?
We firmly believe that the latest vessels, characterized by enhancements in cargo capacity and fuel efficiency, alongside other emission-reduction initiatives, stands as a highly suitable solution aligning with both Preem’s and our customers’ requisites. Its adoption is poised to significantly contribute to the overarching objective of transitioning towards a sustainable society.

Lastly: we have heard that you prefer to keep the same crew on board of the new vessel. That is a great compliment towards the crew! Why/what do they stand out in? and what would be your message/advise to our crew in general?
The crew on the Thun Evolve has been with us for a long time and has done an excellent job in this highly demanding trade. It is extremely important to have an understanding for one another in order to get the most out of the cooperation between the vessel and the chartering/operation side. The professionalism and knowledge onboard all Thun Tanker vessels are the largest contribution to the safe operation as well as short and effective turnaround in port which all is key to a successful delivery.

The Passion of.... Sergei Zhulin
Balancing the High Seas and the Ice Rink
Sergei Zhulin, currently serving as the Second Officer at MF Shipping Group on board the m/t Thun Britain, embodies a remarkable balance between his professional maritime responsibilities and his passion for hockey. In his role, Sergei is entrusted with the safety of the vessel’s navigation, ensuring strict adherence to maritime regulations and standards. His strong background in maritime operations allows him to bring a high level of expertise and dedication to his team.
As a Second Officer, Sergei collaborates closely with the Captain and other crew members to maintain the vessel’s navigational safety, conduct regular safety drills, and manage the ship’s operational activities. He is also responsible for the meticulous planning and execution of voyages. Despite the demanding nature of his maritime career, Sergei’s passion for hockey remains unwavering.
Having played hockey since he was 15, Sergei has learned valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and discipline—qualities that he seamlessly integrates into his maritime career. He is particularly drawn to the combination of speed and power in hockey, as well as the skills involved in skating, stick handling, passing, and shooting.
Growing up, Sergei admired hockey legends like Pavel Bure, Sergei Fedorov, Igor Larionov, and Slava Fetisov. Their dedication, mastery of the game, speed, and physical endurance served as constant sources of motivation for him. Reflecting on his hockey journey, Sergei acknowledges the challenges, including injuries that tested his resilience and determination. Yet, the moments of triumph and the thrill of scoring goals have reaffirmed his love for the sport.
Sergei cherishes the friendly atmosphere with teammates, the adrenaline rush during dynamic games, and the excitement of scoring goals. The blend of speed, strategy, and skill keeps his passion for hockey alive. “These experiences have taught me valuable life lessons about perseverance, teamwork, and discipline,” Sergei notes.
During his vacations, Sergei meticulously plans his training schedule, typically playing three games per week and dedicating 1-2 hours for stick handling and physical exercises. To enhance his performance on the ice, he diversifies his physical training, aiming to become faster and stronger.
On board the Thun Britain, maintaining a training schedule poses challenges due to weather conditions, watch schedules, and routine tasks. Nonetheless, Sergei seizes opportunities to engage in simple physical exercises like squats, pull-ups, and push-ups. Considering his four contracts on board the Thun Britain, he is contemplating bringing a hockey stick and pucks to practice stick handling during his free time.
In Sergei’s view, hockey players must rely on each other, emphasizing the importance of teamwork. “In hockey, knowing that your teammates will be in the right position or make the right play is crucial,” he says. While individual skills like speed, endurance, skating, and stick handling are important, Sergei believes that the essence of hockey lies in its team dynamics.
Sergei’s experiences have taught him that failure is a part of the journey, and the key is to never stop striving, never give up, and never be disappointed by setbacks. His future goals in hockey revolve around continuous skill improvement, becoming faster, stronger, and more flexible, and most importantly, enjoying every moment on the ice.
