Dear colleagues,
Welcome to this new edition of our personnel magazine, Fleetlog. This time, I have been asked as the new Fleet Director to write the foreword. The recently established position of Fleet Director is designed to ensure the smooth operation and continuity of daily activities, while also steering the mission, vision, and strategic direction of the organization, and fostering client relationships, always in collaboration with the team.
Looking back to my own beginnings at sea, I vividly remember my father’s stories of the powerful engines and the unique bond between those who live and work on the seven seas. The idea of a vision for a ship did not come up often then, but now I understand how crucial it has been in my career.
In my early days as a Junior Engineer, my captain shared a simple but powerful vision with us - to make our ship the star of the fleet, with voyages so smooth that they would be “boring”, meaning there would be no incidents and safety was always paramount. This vision brought us together, it was not just about following orders; it was about caring for each other, taking responsibility and being accountable. Together, we set safety as our goal and made it our mission to get there.
Now, as Fleet Director, I see it as our job to move forward as leaders in safe and sustainable ship management. This is not just a goal, it is our common journey. I invite all of you, whether you are at sea or in the office, to embrace this vision. Use it as a compass in your daily choices, especially when faced with difficult decisions. Ask yourself: does this choice lead us to safety and sustainability?
In this edition of the Fleetlog, we dive deeper into the core of MF Shipping Group. We will talk about our new Environmental Department focused on eco-friendly initiatives, and a recap of our Company Days in Istanbul and Subic, where we talked about leadership and more. As you delve into these inspiring stories, remember that each of us is an integral part of the MF Shipping Group family. Let’s Move Forward together towards safe and sustainable ship management.
Happy reading!

Crew management is the heart of every successful and safe maritime operation. At MF Shipping Group, we place a high value on carefully selecting the right people on board. We recognise our seafarers’ invaluable contribution and understand that our success depends on their dedication and skills.
We pride ourselves on the diversity of our team, which comprises different nationalities. To ensure that we have skilled and motivated seafarers who are an excellent fit for MF Shipping Group, we also rely on the expertise of our partners: Conautic Maritime, Memeco Recruitment, Nordvegr, and C-Crew Management. Their experience and professional approach to crew management enable us to recruit officers and crew members who meet our standards, ensuring that our vessels operate safely and efficiently.
At the Company Days in Subic in the Philippines, we met with Cecilia S. Peralta, Operations Manager of Conautic.

Working effectively with manning agencies: the key to quality seafarers
Can you tell us about the history of the Philippines as a maritime nation?
The Philippines has long been recognized as one of the largest sources of skilled seafarers, providing labor to various international shipping companies since the 1970s.
Back then, the global shipping scene underwent significant changes. Economic downturns, such as the 1973 and 1979 oil crises, prompted shipowners to seek cost-cutting measures.
That is when they began registering their vessels under flags of convenience (FOC), which allowed them to hire seafarers from places like the Philippines, where labor costs were lower than in other regions.
This shift was more than just about saving money; it created opportunities for the Philippines to become a key player in supplying seafarers worldwide. It is a story of age-old seafaring customs meeting modern global demands. Today, Filipino seafarers continue to make waves in the maritime industry, sustaining worldwide trade and connecting nations across the seas.
In the maritime industry, you work with many nationalities. What is important to know about your Filipino colleagues?
Filipinos are known as friendly and hospitable, with a strong work ethic and flexibility in the workplace. These qualities enable us to navigate different cultural norms, communication styles, and expectations, all while fostering effective collaboration.

Interview
How would you describe the cooperation with MF Shipping Group?
I’ve been with Conautic for quite some time now, and while our collaboration with MF Shipping Group is good, it hasn’t always been seamless. Our ongoing partnership has resulted in a more connected and engaged environment. You truly feel valued and supported here. Despite the time difference, we’ve managed to create a space where we can express ourselves, brainstorm ideas, learn from one another, and appreciate different perspectives.
Collaboration can be complex and ever-changing, but it is a beautiful concept in the workplace. At the end of each day, we strive for fair and mutually beneficial outcomes that meet our common goals.
Our cultural values of “utang na loob” (debt of gratitude) and “pakikisama” (empathy and kindness) set us apart
What are the characteristics that distinguish MF Shipping Group?
What sets apart MF Shipping Group is that, firstly, they have a well-thought-out and executed plan. Second, they have a balanced and respected crew rotation plan. Thirdly, they actively promote a healthy working environment and awareness. Finally, their ability to connect with and engage with their people sets them apart.
What makes an MF Shipping Group (Marin) employee different from a seafarer working for another shipping company?
Crew benefits, job security, long-term planning, and other activities that allow crew members to enjoy and refresh their knowledge.
What are some of the key values or cultural aspects that contribute to a positive working environment for Filipino employees?
Filipinos are recognized for their friendliness and hospitality, embodying a resilient spirit that shines through adversity with their infectious smiles, contributing to their positive reputation. Our commitment to leadership, assistance, and

respect sets us apart, accompanied by the cultural values of “utang na loob” (debt of gratitude) and “pakikisama” (empathy and kindness).
MF Shipping Group aims to promote diversity and inclusion within its organization. What does this mean for recruitment through Conautic?
Recruiting qualified seafarers is crucial; however, promoting diversity and inclusion can set you apart when seeking the best candidates. Diversity to me refers to the unique traits and characteristics that make people different, while inclusion pertains to the behaviors and social norms that ensure everyone feels welcome. While these two concepts are distinct, they must work together to bring people under one roof. In this case, that place is MF Shipping Group through Conautic.
What is your biggest challenge now and in the future?
Staying ahead of the game in recruitment is paramount. It is a continuing challenge that spans yesterday, today, and tomorrow. To maintain our position at the forefront, we must adopt a continuous and effective recruitment strategy coupled with long-term planning. This approach is essential for maintaining a steady flow of talent and achieving a 100% retention rate. By remaining proactive and strategic in our recruitment efforts, we can ensure that MF Shipping Group through Conautic continues to be a destination of choice for top-tier seafarers.
What other messages would you like to convey to the crew reading this Fleetlog?
Learning is a continuous process; laughter is timeless; imagination has no age; and dreams are forever. Remember: “Do not be afraid to entrust your unknown future to the all-knowing GOD”.
Big thanks!
In the Philippines, Cecilia, along with all her colleagues, has been responsible for the excellent organization of company events and all the fun parties surrounding them for years.
We want to sincerely thank them for all their hard work and dedication!
We look back on unforgettable days in Turkey and the Philippines together with seafarers, our partners and office staff. This wonderful experience brought us together even more as a unique family, enjoying special moments together.

In the year 2024, a groundbreaking inspection regime known as “SIRE 2.0” will be implemented across all tanker vessels. Spearheaded by the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF), this initiative marks a significant milestone in ensuring the safety and integrity of maritime operations.
The Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) was formed in 1970 in response to the growing public concern about marine pollution, particularly by oil. In the 54 years since, OCIMF has grown to become a leading authority on safety for the global marine industry.
By OCIMF a very important safety initiative was introduced in 1993. This is initiative is called Ship Inspection Report Program (SIRE). SIRE is an inspection program and database program and a good risk assessment tool for charterers and terminal operators. Since its introduction it contains more than 180.000 inspection reports.
Since the start of the SIRE program, incidents including oil spills on board tanker vessels were reduced. This makes it a very important tool for all oil majors to reduce the risks while their cargo is on board!
Vetting Inspection
Our tanker vessels are on an average of 2.3 vetting inspection per year. Zooming in on the recorded observations of the vetting inspectors during the last year on board of our vessels we see an average of 3 vetting observations / inspection. As the industry evolves, its risk profile changes. For this reason OCIMF started in 2022 developing SIRE 2.0. An enhanced risk based vessel inspection program that can easily be updated to address emerging risks and evolving regulations.
14
A new era in tanker vessel safety
SIRE 2.0: digitalized inspection program
The shore team in close corporation with the vessel provides key data into the SIRE 2.0 Inspection process. The supplied data must be entered before a SIRE 2.0 Inspection can take place. Each of the four supplied data entry areas are ‘living repositories’ of information that we can update at any time!
The four areas are:
• Vessel Photograph Repository;
• Vessel Certificate Repository;
• Vessel Particulars (HVPQ);
• Vessel Pre-Inspection Questionnaire (PIQ).
Before embarking the vessel, the SIRE 2.0 inspector will complete a compiled vessel inspection questionnaire in real time. The inspector uses a tablet device. The questions are selected from a questions library. This covers four types of questions:
1. Core questions – assigned to every inspection with a focus on catastrophic risk events;
2. Conditional questions – these are ship specific questions (history, operator, ship type);
3. Rotational questions – these questions are assigned to the vessel on an occasional basis focusing on risks that may lead indirectly to severe or catastrophic risk events;
4. Campaign questions – existing rotational questions in respond to an incident or industry trend identified by OCIMF.
Unlike the original SIRE questionnaire, every SIRE 2.0 question will be assessed in relation to HARDWARE – PROCESS – HUMAN FACTORS graded as “not as expected” though to “exceeds expectations”. Inspectors will support the observations with images where permitted.
Testing Phase 3
The transition to SIRE 2.0 is taking place in phases. We are now in Phase 3. This is the testing phase on board of the vessels. Together with the oil major we will schedule a test SIRE 2.0 vetting inspection on board your vessel during this phase. Please note that the final report is for learning purpose only and will not be uploaded into the SIRE system. Phase 3 will take about 6 months and is expected to be completed end of year 2024.
Together with the oil major we will schedule a test SIRE 2.0 vetting inspection on board your vessel during this phase
15
KAIKO System
To assist our seafarers on board of the tanker vessels in preparing for a SIRE 2.0 vetting inspection we have installed a SIRE 2.0 pre-vetting system on board. The supplier of the system is KAIKO. Each vessel is equipped with two iPads running the KAIKO system app.
Utilizing the Kaiko App enables streamlined data collection and sharing, reducing paperwork time and enhancing the onboard inspection process. With this system, there is no need for typing or reporting work on the computer, as all information can be added to the app during the inspection. At the end of an inspection, you will have an overview of the results and can upload them quickly and easily.
More about the KAIKO app
The app includes all information from your HVPQ6. The app not only guides the seafarers to conduct inspections but also allows them to plan, conduct, and upload inspections in one plaorm. This ensures that standards from SIRE 2.0 can be met while saving crews time spent on inspections.
As per today Kaiko starts with the training of our seafarers and the key shore staff.
We have scheduled the Thun Gazelle as the first ship which will prepare the upcoming vetting inspection with the new Kaiko SIRE 2.0 pre-vetting assessment. We wish them lots of success and hope that the outcome of the first SIRE 2.0 vetting will be positive for all crew members and related shore team. Hopefully we will learn a lot of the SIRE 2.0 inspections during phase 3. We will do this together!

Prioritizing health and safety
At the end of 2023, MF Shipping Group introduced its new Health & Safety Campaign, reaffirming our steadfast dedication to the well-being of our employees. At the core of our values lies a commitment to prioritizing health and safety, a principle that takes precedence in our mission and vision policies. Our overarching goal is clear: zero accidents, injuries, and health and safety incidents for every employee. Building upon the success of our previous campaign, we aim to reduce eye injuries and heighten awareness regarding fatigue prevention.
Mooring operations focus
Mooring operations are among the critical tasks carried out by crew members aboard ships. During our recent Company Days, we spotlighted the significance of safe mooring operations, offering comprehensive insights and stressing the critical need for vigilance at all levels. These operations are fundamental to our industry, requiring precision and a collective commitment to safety.
2023 overview
In the year 2023, we conducted a total of 10.902 mooring operations. While the majority concluded successfully, it is imperative to acknowledge the challenges we faced, including 12 near misses and 5 snapped mooring ropes. Unfortunately, one incident resulted in a serious injury. Our unwavering commitment, however, remains steadfast: zero injuries is our target, and we acknowledge that there is work yet to be done.
Identifying risks
It is crucial for each member of our team to actively consider the risks inherent in mooring operations. Various
circumstances can contribute to potential problems, ranging from miscommunications and technical errors to the condition of equipment and the environment. Slippery decks, entangled mooring ropes, and inadequate crew rest are just a few examples of factors that can compromise safety.
Moving Forward
As we reflect on the past and assess the challenges encountered, let us collectively ponder the risks associated with mooring operations. Recognizing the diverse factors that can lead to complications is the first step towards a safer working environment. By fostering an atmosphere of open communication, adhering to best practices, and prioritizing ongoing training, we can collectively work towards our shared goal of zero injuries during mooring operations.
In conclusion, our commitment to health and safety remains unwavering. Through continuous improvement, increased awareness, and a united effort, MF Shipping Group is determined to achieve our goal of zero accidents, injuries, and health and safety incidents for our valued employees.

The Passion of....
Wim Mulder
Many people have hobbies they enjoy in their spare time, but a hobby is not to be confused with a passion. A passion is something you can’t live without, something that becomes a significant part of your life and fills you with immense joy and energy. While those at MF Shipping Group display their passion for the maritime industry daily, let’s explore the passions of our colleagues in other areas. In this issue we feature Wim Mulder, Technical Superintendent in the Technical Department.
Wim lives in Noordlaren with his girlfriend and three daughters, whose deep-rooted passion for ice skating goes beyond personal enjoyment. As an integral part of the management team of the ice skating club ‘De Hondsrug’, Wim is at the forefront of transforming his picturesque town into a winter wonderland for skating enthusiasts. In this article, we delve into Wim’s journey, explore the rink’s rich history and unravel its profound impact on the close-knit community of Noordlaren.
A frosty beginning
“In 2017, we moved to Noordlaren and my neighbours, who were part of the ice rink management team, introduced me to the fascinating world of ice making. Working together under the stars to achieve a common goal was something truly magical,” says Wim. The ice rink behind De Rieshoek Primary School, completed in 1997, is the heartbeat of our city. It’s not just an ice rink, it’s a canvas for countless stories and triumphs.” On 9 December 2002, De Hondsrug organised the first natural ice marathon on its ice rink. It was also the first race in 2010, 2012 and 2013. These events have attracted considerable national attention.
The first marathon of the year
“The 48 hours before the first marathon of the year on natural ice are like a rollercoaster. Lack of sleep, anticipation and the rush to meet the KNSB’s (Royal Dutch Skating Association) 30mm ice thickness requirement - it’s a test of our dedication,” explains Wim. “When the KSNB gives the green light, it’s a whirlwind. Within 8 hours we transform the rink into a professional arena, fuelled by the energy of our passionate volunteers.” In the winter of 2009/2010, ice skating club ‘De Hondsrug’ reached another important milestone by hosting the Dutch Marathon Skating Championships on natural ice. The exciting races took place
18
Wim during an interview with the local Press
on 10 February 2010 on the Zuidlaardermeer. The women’s race covered 60 kilometres, while the men’s race was 100 kilometres. Local press broadcast the races live.
Safety and enjoyment
“As volunteers, our presence isn’t just about creating a rink; it’s about ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. From regular inspections to first aid, we’ve got it covered. The cantina and Dutch music add to the lively atmosphere,” says Wim. “The rink has evolved over the years. To meet the challenges of the changing climate, we have secured funding to replace our asphalt rink with a lighter surface to ensure a longer-lasting and more reliable skating experience,” Wim notes.
Fascination with ice skating
For Wim, the most fascinating aspect of skating is seeing the joy it brings to people. The positive feedback and the happiness of the skaters create an energetic atmosphere that makes all the effort worthwhile. The ice rink in Noordlaren is not only a recreational space, but also a focal point for community involvement. Residents, young and old, use the rink for various activities, and the management team actively organises winter games and competitions, fostering a strong sense of community.
Our mentality is simple - ‘let’s do it together’. That’s the essence of our community spirit,” Wim concludes with an open invitation.

08-10-2023
Both C/O F. Calaguin and C/E A. Zhagorov celebrated 12.5 years with the company and each received a Certificate of Appreciation and a jubilee gift from Captain Guanco. Captain Guanco said that both gentlemen felt honoured and grateful to be recognised by the company for their hard work and loyal service.
C/O Calaguin started out as a CK when he joined our company in 2011, but quickly followed the necessary steps to be promoted to Deck Officer. Steadily working his way up, he was promoted from 2/O to C/O on board Malta Cement in 2018. Thank you for your efforts over the years and congratulations on your anniversary!
C/O Zhagorov first joined our company by serving on board mv John Paul K, and he continued to sail on that vessel for many years thereafter. In 2017, he transferred to mv Malta Cement, where he has been one of the permanent Chief Engineers ever since.
Thank you for your loyalty and we look forward to working together for many years to come!
Captain E. Pavasars
C/O M. Sundukov
22-10-2023
Back in the day, Mr. Sundukov’s first steps on board one of the Alstership vessels were as an apprentice. After completing his education at the Maritime Academy, he returned to us and quickly became a Second Officer on board mv Pitztal, where he sailed for quite some time. On board mv Antje K. in 2018, he became Chief Officer and has been working on board this vessel ever since. On 22 October, he celebrated his anniversary on board and received his certificate of appreciation from Captain V. Martusov.
Thank you for your dedication and congratulations on this special anniversary!
28-10-2023
On 28 October last year, Master Eriks Pavasars celebrated his 12.5 year anniversary. During these years, Mr. Pavasars has worked his way up from 3/O to 2/O and Chief Officer aboard the G-type tankers and last year was promoted to Captain aboard Thun Evolve and is currently sailing aboard Thun Britain. A great example of where hard work, diligence and perseverance can lead and we are proud to witness your growth and loyalty. Master Pavasars said: “I am honoured to have reached this working anniversary and I am grateful for the support and encouragement of my colleagues on board and in the office. Thank you for all the congratulations! Let’s go for 25 years!”
AB A. Juridico
18-01-2024
Happy faces on the bridge of mv Bornholm, where the 12.5-year jubilee of AB Allan Juridico was celebrated on 18 January 2024. Ab Juridico started his career on mv Fortune. Since then he’s sailed on various cement carriers and for the past 5 years he’s been a familiar face among the crew of mv Bornholm.
Captain Ruslan Bazalij proudly states that: “Whenever AB Juridico is on board, everything seems easy and light and all is well. There can be some problems, but at the end of the day everything is fine, thanks to the great teamwork between AB Juridico and the crew.
26
Also, whenever we need someone on deck or in the engine room, we can always count on AB Juridico to lend a hand to whoever needs it. This is a quality that separates a man from a boy, the maturity and discipline in him. The joy, the happiness and the willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done can always be seen in his eyes. When it comes to professionalism, AB Juridco sets a high standard for what a seafarer should be. It is not having the knowledge that makes a man smart or intelligent, it is knowing that you have it, but then with the absence of pride and arrogance, I have seen this from Mr Allan Juridico :)”.

Cook H. Cariaso was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and a gift in honour of his 12.5 years of service by Captain Ulf Westin on board the Thun Equality on 22 January 2024. Captain Westin speaks fondly of Cook Cariaso: “Howard is a very good cook, always provides good and tasty food and keeps the galley and stores in a very clean and tidy condition. When we have visitors on board, such as pilots etc, they are always happy with his food, which is served in a very nice way. He is always happy and singing, so we call him the “singing chef”.

Captain L. Postma celebrated his 30th anniversary with our company on board “his” mv Alice on 27 January 2024. There was a lovely cake to mark this very special occasion. For the past decade Captain Postma sailed on board mv Alice, but previously he sailed on board many of the other Thun Dry Cargo vessels as well. At MF Shipping Group we are proud of all the crew who have been with us over the years. But to mark this special 30th anniversary, we thought it would be nice to interview Leen and reflect on 30 years with the company.

We received the sad news that Jan Melchers passed away in autumn 2023. Jan, born on 23 August 1944, started his maritime career with MF Shipping Group on 5 May 1996. Serving on dry cargo vessels such as Rufinia/Sabina, Ostgard and Ice-Star, he left an indelible mark on the sea.
After years of dedicated service, Jan retired on 18 October 2006.
We wish his family strength at this difficult time!
C/E Evgeny Vedenski (03-07-1972 - 06-03-2024)
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the sudden death of Chief Engineer Evgeny Vedenski on 6 March 2023, aboard the Karl-Jakob K and since 2016 in service . He was only 51 years old.
Our thoughts are with his family and crew during this difficult time.
Evgeny’s legacy will live on in the memories of those who had the privilege of working with him. His dedication and expertise have left a lasting impression.

A new chapter in our mission
Since January 1, 2024, MF Shipping Group has taken a significant step forward in our mission to act as a reliable and sustainable partner, with a strong focus on environmental consciousness. This has led to the establishment of a new department: Sustainability, headed by our Chief Sustainability Officer, Jacob Roelevink.
With a rich history of involvement in developing cleaner and greener shipping solutions, coupled with a steadfast commitment to protecting and preserving the maritime environment in which our vessels operate, we underscore the increasing importance of these endeavors. In response to escalating regulations and a growing recognition of the urgency of embracing environmentally friendly alternatives, the Sustainability Department plays a pivotal role in our journey towards a more sustainable future.
Jacob expresses, “With a primary focus on fuel efficiency as a key element in minimizing our carbon footprint, our efforts extend beyond that. National and international regulations, with a strong emphasis on emissions reduction, necessitate an increasingly rigorous administration and verification scheme. Collaborating with our clients, we aspire to lead and pioneer in the shipping industry, ensuring that our vessels excel and surpass legislative requirements wherever possible.”
Central to achieving this ambition is a robust data collection system, currently deployed across our fleet, featuring mass flow meters, torque meters, and the Eefting fuel efficiency monitoring system. These systems automatically record and transfer data for voyage data collection, crucial for MRV reporting. It’s important to note that this is a collective endeavor.
“The Sustainability Department is tasked with monitoring and supporting vessels in administrative matters, serving as a resource for vessels, departments, and stakeholders in dayto-day operations for optimization. Looking ahead, we must find ways to comply with and adapt to future requirements. The goals are clear: the IMO and the EU have set ambitious targets for CO2 emissions and decarbonization. However, the paths to achieving these goals are diverse, requiring careful decision-making.”
A long-term commitment and determination are imperative to realizing our objectives. The Sustainability Department comprises a team driven by an intrinsic desire to inspire and develop new strategies and technologies where possible. Tests and trials will be integral to maximizing vessel performance in terms of environmental impact, requiring a collaborative effort from both shore and onboard personnel. Moving together is the only way to achieve these goals.
Jacob Roelevink Chief Sustainability Officer

Company Days Istanbul & Subic
On February 22 and 23, it finally happened - after a long period of separation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eastern European and Russian seafarers gathered again for the first time in the vibrant heart of Istanbul for the Company Days. And the energy wasn’t limited to Turkey alone; on February 28 and 29, the Company Days continued in the Philippines. It was a joyful reunion among the seafarers, with Henrik Källsson (Erik Thun Group) and Jan Nennhaus (Alstership) present along with representatives from manning agencies and a delegation from our office. The Company Days are more than just a meeting; they form a moment where our team at sea and on land truly comes together.
The theme of these meetings was clear: leadership and safety were at the forefront.
The Company Days are more than just a meeting; they form a moment where our team at sea and on land truly comes together
Erik Zwijghuizen, our fleet director, opened the meeting with passion and spoke about the crucial importance of collaboration between seafarers and office. He shared our joint mission and vision: the pursuit of sustainable and forward-looking ship management, with deep respect for people and the environment as we transport ships and cargo worldwide. He emphasized the importance of ‘together we are MF Shipping Group’, where we all sail the same course on the same ship. To steer our journey, he named three strategic goals, along with core values, as our compass to guide our actions.
Key Message: We strive for an organizational culture with open communication, where every voice is heard. An organization where everyone is responsible for creating a positive and safe working environment. This requires concentration, focus, and mutual trust. Let’s normalize feedback and support each other constructively, so that we can progress together and achieve our goals. A work environment that is also free from bullying or harassment. With our zero-tolerance policy against discrimination and harassment, we are building a culture of inclusive collaboration and safety, the key to progress and success.
And of course, there was also time for relaxation and fun because, in addition to informing and learning, there was plenty of opportunity to laugh, catch up, and celebrate the 30th anniversary of MF Shipping Group. These moments are living proof of that.
Under the guidance of external speaker Karen Waltham, we delved deep into leadership themes and engaged in candid discussions about incidents that occurred over the past year. It was a lively discussion in which we not only learned from our mistakes but also looked at how certain incidents could have been prevented through behavioral change.
We also returned to the core of our activities and looked ahead with our Technical, Environmental, Crew, and Quality departments, with particular emphasis on addressing mooring incidents. We commemorated our achievements and formulated fresh strategies to propel us towards our objectives.

leader matters Save the date Company Days the Netherlands 13/14 Juni 2024
you
as a
It was a real privileged to be invited to join the MF Shipping Group Company Days particularly with the 30 years celebrations taking place this year.
As an invited guest speaker, I worked with Karin, Erik and the senior team to create a focussed learning workshop as part of the 2 days activities scheduled for Turkey and the Philippines (and scheduled for the Company Days in June in the Netherlands). The planning of the 2 days ensured that not only were important operational matters discussed and shared, but there was also time set aside for learning and importantly time to be together in person, to relax and have some fun.
Leadership, and leadership behaviour was the topic chosen as a key theme. While it is such a broad subject, it is important to everyone of us in whatever role you play at work and in life.
• How many of us have to persuade team members to do things they don’t always want to do?
• How many need to convince crew, officer, team members, customers, authorities, office teams to accept recommendations, judgements and may have to make sacrifices?
• How important is it to build strong relationships with people at all levels?
The first half of the workshop introduced key themes of personal branding, communication, difficult conversations, feedback, trust as well as bullying and harassment. With the time we had, we knew that we would be only able to scratch the surface of such important matters which we deal with daily often unknowingly.
I was keen to ensure delegates had ‘light bulb’ moments, when they could see and recognise things, they do every
day that they may want to do differently in the future. Creating behaviour change can be so hard, although recognising the need, or to have the desire to change is the start of the process.
For me creating an experiential and fun environment promotes learning. The delegates in both Istanbul and Subic were participative, and engaged and importantly admitted they learned so much working through the exercises set.
With the help of a Traffic Light System (Stop, Continue, Start) all delegates had the opportunity to share what they felt they would be working on following the Workshop.
From Istanbul there was a strength in need to:
• listen more to others
• increase communication
• consider biases which may be getting in the way
From Subic there was a strong focus on:
• more trust of others
• listening as part of communication
• personal health and well being
In both locations having the opportunity to be together was overwhelming. My passion is people and I continue to learn every day and I thank everyone I met for making my work so special and memorable.
Karen Waltham
The 30-Years journey of Captain Leen Postma
Coincidence seems almost non-existent, we must say. When we announced the 30th anniversary of the MF Shipping Group, we received a festive photo of Captain Leen Postma celebrating his 30th anniversary with the company. Congratulations aside, Leen certainly deserves a place in this Fleetlog.
Talking to Leen, we had the pleasure of reflecting on his career.
34
He remembers the beginning well. Leen worked for Wagenborg. After his training at the nautical college in Delfzijl, he started as a sailor on the Eemsborg and eventually rose to the position of second mate. When things slowed down at Wagenborg, a number of ships were sold to the forerunner of MF Shipping Group: Sandfirden. Leen moved with the ship. He remembers well that on 4 April 1984 the Eemsborg, of which Leen was second mate, was sold to Thun. This was Erik Thun AB’s first ship under the Dutch flag. In 1985 the ship was lengthened and converted into a self-discharging vessel.
In the past years he has sailed on various ships. The passion for water and sailing was already in the blood of the Amelander from a young age, one of the Dutch islands. As a boy of 6/7 years old, he was fascinated by fishing and the sea, and he sailed on flat boats. He remembers well how navigation, from buoy to buoy, was simply written on the back of a cigar box. He looks back on his youth with pleasure.
His father was a farmer, a future that Leen did not see for himself, despite working on a farm on weekends during his youth and mastering milking cows. From the age of 12 to 18, he regularly went on various fishing boats as a holiday worker, both from Ameland and from the coastal town of Scheveningen, where his uncle and aunt lived. This adventurous youth laid the foundation for his career as a sailor. After so many years Leen is a seafarer at heart, who couldn’t wish for any other profession.
After so many years Leen is a seafarer at heart, who couldn’t wish for any other profession
35
Leen appreciates life with nature, water, wind, sea, sun and more, not only during his work, but also in his free time. Fishing is a passion he cherishes (followed by smoking and eating the fish). He also enjoys beachcombing, strolling along the beach for hours, and sometimes also in the ports he visits, looking for old iron. Finding treasures such as old beer bottles, amber, and other curiosities fascinates him. Every found object tells a story - how old is it and who has held it? He even made a table for his home from the wood he found on the beach of Ameland.
What are the biggest differences over the past 30 years?
It used to be that people knew each other well in MF Shipping Group, which was still a small organisation. Nowadays it is no longer possible to know everyone by name and you meet new colleagues through the Fleetlog, for example. Shipping has also changed drastically during this time. From the first acquaintance with a course on a cigar box to the use of advanced systems such as the DECCA system on fishing vessels, AP navigation (a precursor to GPS) and now the ECDIS system.
Freedom and autonomy have also changed over the years. It used to be that you did everything yourself, you could enter and leave ports without a pilot, and during the voyage radio contact was limited, making you more independent. Now there is constant communication via satellite, which
makes it easier. The same goes for the introduction of the first computer on board. Before, you had to fiddle around to make it your own, and if you had reception, you had to collect e-mail traffic. If the connection went down or you were out of range, you had to start all over again. That is unthinkable now. Staying in touch at home has also become easier. He used to send a lot of letters to his home by airmail and make the odd phone call on land. You had to rely more on yourself and the team on board. But actually, despite all the changes, that is still the case.
After all, sailing is done together, regardless of rank; everyone is important
Since 2013 Leen has sailed on the Alice, before that on the Kinne and also on the Leckö. He has sailed on each of these ships. He also worked on the Olivier, both as captain and first mate, together with Bob Kamphuis and Marten van Straten, who still are working for Erik Thun AB and MF Shipping Group
36
respectively. On board he has a small team of 7 people. They know and trust each other, they know what each other can do, which is good for safety on board. After all, sailing is done together, regardless of rank; everyone is important. You need each other to get on and make the job more enjoyable. Also, two people know more than one and it is important to speak up and dare to ask questions.
An important condition for any seafarer is that things are going well at home. Otherwise, you’ll be thinking about home when sailing demands your full concentration. Fortunately, Leen’s wife Janneke and her son Bauke provide such a stable home base on Ameland.
Thirty years have flown by, and like the changing weather and unpredictable sea, Leen has seen both calm and stormy times. His life as a sailor is full of adventures that could fill a fleetlog. Think of the time during the Tunisian uprising when he was chained for two packages of wood that had been missing for four years. Or the time he was asked for a ‘small gift ’, which he resolutely refused, asking dryly if they thought he was Santa Claus, complete with red mitre and grey beard. The different voyages, continents and ports have each brought their own challenges, and Leen has risen to them all.
Thirty years have flown by, and like the changing weather and unpredictable sea, Leen has seen both calm and stormy times
But the biggest change in shipping is undoubtedly the everincreasing burden of regulations and administrative tasks. People choose shipping to sail, not to get bogged down in paperwork. Leen wonders if this growing system of rules and regulations is turning against them. The additional tasks and increasing workload may be discouraging, even for future generations of seafarers. Although regulations are sometimes necessary, he believes that today they sometimes go too far and seem to have little to do with the reality on the shop floor. Take the ballast water system, for example - although effective, it is seen as a superfluous regulation when operating in the same shipping area.
Sustainability issues are another major challenge. They are essential for a greener shipping industry and a healthier planet, but they also bring complexity. As for the fuel of the future, Leen doesn’t want to put his money on it. There is still a lot of uncertainty and further development is needed.
Over the past 30 years, MF Shipping Group has grown impressively but has always retained its human face. This is a rarity in the international shipping world. Leen sees this as the driving force and success factor behind the company’s past, present and future. And let’s not forget Karin Orsel, who is at the helm and plays a crucial role in the success of MF Shipping Group.
As long as his health permits and his work does not turn into an office job, Captain Leen will continue to sail for MF Shipping Group until his retirement.

SAYFR
Both in our office and on board our vessels, we are keen to assess the safety culture. This initiative is primarily aimed at preventing incidents, as MF Shipping Group is committed to achieving ZERO incidents, both onshore and offshore.
In many serious incidents, the underlying failures have been identified beforehand, but no action has been taken by those involved. Often this silence perpetuated the problems, allowing them to escalate and preventing action in critical situations.
In the office employees use the EverybodyFrank app already. This app allows office staff to anonymously reflect on various aspects of their work experience.
On board our vessels, we will soon introduce the “Safemind” app from the Norwegian company “Sayfr” on a voluntary basis for all seafarers. Each seafarer will receive an email with instructions on how to install this app on any device. It’s important to note that the data generated by this app is completely anonymous. Through anonymous pulse surveys, Safemind enables us to assess the impact of our corporate culture on human factors and safety performance.
The first step in understanding our culture is to measure it, which is why we have chosen to use Safemind.
It’s important to note that the data generated by this app is completely anonymous
