I think my first story written was in sixth grade, something to show my penmanship for the county fair. Penmanship, me. Right. I wrote Beatles fan fiction, and horrible Gothic romances, then set aside writing for my other obsession, horses. I worked in horses and dogs (and restaurants) until my mid thirties when I discovered real jobs in materials management, and married Tom. We were married for 25 years, most of them spent in Los Angeles County. It had to be true love for me to live there that long. New Mexico was our ultimate goal and we had five wonderful years on the high plains. For all that time, I wrote. Writing helped me deal with living around too many people, and then helped me express the joy of the high plains, and then the shock of losing my best friend. I write to share my dreams.

MONA KAREL (Cont.) INTERVIEW MFRW: Tell us about your latest book. What motivated the story? Where did the idea come from? MK: When I was in my late twenties I was a Denny's waitress...lots of stories there! I dated someone I “knew” was the love of my life. HAH! But he did prompt a conversation with one of my regular customers about how he walked like a fighter. Coming from horses I had automatically recognized this but hadn't thought about it consciously. This morphed into the beginning of A Question of Honor. I wonder where that man is now? MFRW: Do you feel humor is important in fiction and why? MK: I think humor is critical for my writing. So many times I find humor in the least appropriate situations, where I can't express it. Writing helps relieve that pressure MFRW: Generally, how long does it take you to write a book? MK: Anywhere from a month to thirty years. The month was for first draft of My Killer My Love. The thirty years has been for the torturous rewrite of my first book. The only thing remaining is the general location (northern New Mexico), the character's names (this is Kyle Jorden's story), and the basic story line (death and destruction in the horse world).

MFRW: List two authors we would find you reading when taking a break from your own writing. MK: Only two??? Eileen Dreyer, Patricia Briggs...but there are so many more MFRW: Which comes first, the story, the characters, or the setting? MK: Usually all of them at once. My Killer My Love came from my battle with snails. I had to resort to nasty snail bait and I was suddenly in a deep forest, with a voice telling me not to do that. I wrote the first draft in a month of sleepless nights. Setting, especially that first meeting, is critical for me. Stormhaven, the setting for my current books, has been a half-thought dream for a long time. MFRW: I love pizza with… MK: A low carb crust and green chiles.

Once the woman slept he moved more freely. With the stealthy tread of a stalking wolf he searched the darkening rooms, letting his senses hunt for a specific location. He settled in a corner window seat, bathed by the moonlight inching its way toward her bed. Many puzzles existed here, and he knew he was not yet prepared to face them. He breathed deeply, then more slowly, his body becoming motionless. The atmosphere around him thickened, a silent wind lifting his hair away from his face, then dying abruptly. After a long moment of hushed tension, he emitted a sound of exasperation. The answers had never come to him easily before, why should now be any different? He studied the woman. Even in her sleep, her thoughts spoke to him in unclear muttering, a not unpleasant sensation. He wondered about the part he had been sent to play, and knew the ending would not be as originally planned. He could no longer think of her as he had been instructed. This small, fearful female had given him something he had forgotten existed. She had given him back his laughter. For that alone he would protect her beyond life.

EXCERPT Summer 2000: It was a storybook wedding. The elite of the world’s beautiful people crowded the groom’s yacht, cruising off the south French coast. The groom’s austere face was only slightly lined, the gray at his temples adding a distinguished air. His still trim body was clothed by the establishment which had enjoyed the patronage of every male in his family since his great-grandfather. Although he conversed urbanely with his guests, his possessive gaze never left his bride. Framed in the lens of the ever-clicking camera, the bride had the lithe slenderness seen only in the very young and healthy. Delicate curves hinted at the woman she would one day become. Her short dark hair was gamine cut by the stylist who had created the look. Her make-up had been applied by the hands of the genius whose company had taken three generations of women from beautiful to gorgeous. Her lavish bouquet was of rare miniature white orchids, picked deep in the rain forests of South America and flown in for this ceremony. The lace for her veil had been created by devout hands in a convent which had produced lacework of this gossamer perfection for centuries. The veil was secured by a pearl crown once belonging to a medieval princess. It framed a delicate, serious face dominated by enormous, hazy green eyes and a lush, slightly trembling mouth, and billowed down to hand made, four inch spike heels. By tradition the full length veil attested to the purity of the bride, leaving no doubt in the mind of anyone attending that day that this was, indeed, a virgin bride. The diaphanous covering enhanced her bridal outfit, personally designed by the hand of the dresser of royalty. Brilliant fire opals had been meticulously applied to the hand sewn, French cut white bikini.

About the Emerald City Writers’ Conference

Located in the Seattle/Puget Sound area of Washington State, the Greater Seattle chapter of RWA is on a mission to promote excellence in romantic fiction. Our goal is to help writers become published in the romance genre and to provide a place where writers (both published and unpublished) can come for growth, support and information. Over 42 percent of our membership is published. Every year in the fall, our chapter holds the popular Emerald City Writers' Conference, which is currently the largest romance-writing conference on the west coast. The 2015 conference is scheduled for October 16-18, 2015, at the Bellevue Westin. Biography: I think my first story written was in sixth grade, something to show my penmanship for the county fair. Penmanship, me. Right. I wrote Beatles fan fiction and horrible Gothic romances, then set aside writing for my other obsession, horses. I worked in horses and dogs (and restaurants) until my mid-thirties when I discovered real jobs in materials management, and married Tom. We were married for 25 years, most of them spent in Los Angeles County. It had to be true love for me to live there that long. New Mexico was our ultimate goal, and we had five wonderful years on the high plains. For all that time, I wrote. Writing helped me deal with living around too many people, and then helped me express the joy of the high plains, and then the shock of losing my best friend. I write to share my dreams.
