What a joy to write on behalf of the Board in celebration of another stellar year at PCM. As we individually find our way back from virtual and distanced encounters to familiar activities, so too has PCM, with the reinvigoration of group classes, ensembles, and in-person performances.

The year has seen us focusing on Common Ground, the title of our campus development campaign, but more than that, a statement of our values—that music is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, providing a portal for exploring differences and seeking common ground at a time when it is so welcome.

Many activities this year exemplified these values of connecting people through music. We saw it in:

• Adult music history students having lunch together in the courtyard after each class because they have become a community with shared interests.

• Kids who had never met or played together, beautifully performing chamber music after a mere few weeks of rehearsals.

• Seven-year-old pianists and college-bound violinists jamming together in the courtyard.

• In-person Young Musicians classes being provided to all 565 students at Longfellow Elementary for the first time ever.

• Shoppers at Vroman’s joyfully finding our new World Music faculty performing outside and forming a spontaneous audience.

• Residents of MonteCedro filling their auditorium for PCM-presented history classes and concerts for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.

• Our world-class faculty presenting live Musical Interludes—concerts conceived in response to books.

• Graduating seniors being cheered on by family, friends, and colleagues as they performed recitals in stunning Barrett Hall.

Like all non-profit boards, we talk about our role in ensuring the public trust—confirming that PCM’s actions advance our purpose of providing opportunities to learn, perform, and enjoy music to a broad spectrum of the community. We could not be prouder of the way the faculty and staff have innovatively sustained and built the PCM community of participants through the challenging years of the pandemic and as we search for our new normal.

With music as our Common Ground, and with your generous support and participation, PCM helps us forge meaningful connections with one another. Thank you so much for joining us.

Message from the Board Chair

Music is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, providing a portal  for exploring differences and seeking common ground.

Our Annual Report is back in print! Like Punxsutawney Phil poking his head out on Groundhog Day in hopes of spring, would we really be able to emerge from the constraints of the pandemic this year?

Prior to the pandemic, PCM was on an exciting trajectory of growth in almost all facets of the school. Covid-19 interrupted that trajectory.

Looking back, we were reminded that music students are singularly prepared for spending a great deal of time alone (all that practicing), and our appreciation for technology grew. We were also reminded that our work affords wonderful opportunities to learn, perform, and enjoy music together. That, we missed dearly.

It was a year of getting back on track— rebuilding programs most heavily impacted by the shutdown, considering next steps, and recognizing the extraordinary opportunities we have to bring people together at a time when so much seems to divide us.

We hold the greatest admiration for our students and families for their resilience these past few years. We are indebted to our remarkable faculty and staff who navigated pandemic challenges with persistence, creativity, and passion. And we are deeply grateful to our supporters whose generosity helped sustain us through a particularly difficult chapter.

As I hope this report conveys, there is much to celebrate.

Director’s Letter
It was a year of getting back on track...as I hope this report conveys, there is much to celebrate.

Common Ground

In this time when so much divides us, learning, performing, and enjoying music provides substantive opportunities to leave divisions behind, forge connections, and find common ground. In the spring, as a response to the evolving issues of our times, PCM announced the launch of its campaign, which will raise $11 million to promote and facilitate the pursuit of those opportunities by:

• Expanding multicultural programming to include folk traditions from around the world

• Developing intergenerational programming for the very youngest and oldest in our community

• Creating a music lab and music technology programs

The project also encompasses the replacement of one building as well as adding new, purpose-built Adult Studies, Young Musicians, Music Technology classrooms, and an outdoor amphitheater. Additionally, the new building will incorporate green technology to optimize infrastructural efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of the campus.

To date, PCM has raised $6.6 million in gifts and pledges for Common Ground.

For more information about PCM’s Common Ground campaign, please contact Melissa Froehlich at mfroehlich@pasadenaconservatory.org or 626-683-3355 ext. 107.

Concerts

Concerts, recitals, and frequent performance opportunities are essential components to PCM’s plan to develop performance, listening, and concert-going skills in every student. In-person concerts and recitals were back this year(!) with PCM presenting over 75 events on campus.

Notable performances and series included:

• An Overture, a concert presented in partnership with the Ojai Music Festival featuring performances by Ojai Music Festival artists as well as students and faculty from PCM’s new-music ensemble, ensemblePROVA

• The Jam, PCM’s first open mic series

• Three Musical Interludes which explored connections between music, literature, history, architecture, and culture

• And a great many senior recitals!

New Look for Young Musicians Department

The Young Musician’s Department, which was one of PCM’s hardest hit programs during the pandemic, is foundational to the Conservatory’s broader curriculum, developing each child’s innate musical aptitude and creating numerous pathways to instrumental study. To help the department build back its enrollment and improve families’ experiences interacting with the program both online and in-person, we gave the YM Department a makeover that included:

• The Welcome to Young Musicians video

• A new Young Musicians Handbook that outlines our philosophy for early childhood music education, the Young Musician’s curriculum, the caregiver role, and the student’s path to individual lessons

• The creation of the Young Musicians Tree that illustrates our comprehensive plan for each student’s musical growth and how Young Musicians classes feed into PCM’s other departments

• A web page refresh

• A redesign of Department Chair Rachael Doudrick’s Beyond the Classroom handouts

• Young Musicians banners for concerts and events

These efforts were made possible thanks to a generous grant awarded by The Music Man Foundation.

Summer Camps

For the first time since the start of the pandemic, PCM offered over 15 in-person summer camps and workshops. These included past popular programs such as the Summer Jazz Workshop and the Chamber Music Intensive, as well as new programs like Introduction to Accordion and All Things Strings, a one week workshop for Suzuki string students that explores improvisation, recording technology, ensemble skills, and team building.

Musical Interludes

Musical Interludes, formerly Mansions & Music, explores connections between music, literature, history, architecture, and culture.

Last season, concerts returned to the PCM campus for in-person performances featuring PCM faculty and friends. Each program was developed in response to a book, which was available for purchase through our community partner Vroman’s Bookstore.

The Cello Suites, inspired by Eric Siblin’s book, featured Bach’s Cello Suite No. 3 and Piano Trio No. 1 by Felix Mendelssohn, who was instrumental in reviving public interest in Bach.

María Rosa Menocal’s The Ornament of the World provided the inspiration for

exploring music from medieval Andalusia and celebrated Muslim, Jewish, and Christian traditions.

The final program was inspired by The Secret Piano, a memoir by Zhu Xiao-Mei about how music, and her piano, sustained her sense of courage, hope, and humanity during and after the Cultural Revolution.

Support provided by season sponsors not only ensures the quality and success of PCM’s signature concert series, it helps underwrite scholarships for music study, as well as performances for students, families, and the community to attend free of charge. PCM is pleased to thank the following sponsors for their support of the 2021–22 season.

Young Musicians at Longfellow Elementary

Since 2002, PCM has provided free Young Musicians classes to a public school in our neighborhood that otherwise would lack access to a comprehensive music education. The curriculum is the same that we provide to our YM families on campus, which is designed to nurture developmental growth in a musically rich environment, combining movement, listening, singing, touching (playing instruments), and play.

For nearly twenty years, PCM provided classes to students at Jefferson Elementary, introducing them to various styles of music including classical, folk, jazz, and world music. In 2020, when the school consolidated with Longfellow Elementary, the YM program followed and the first year of music instruction (2020–21) was provided entirely online.

Longfellow teacher Tyara Brooks shared that “at a time of uncertainty and instability, music class became the lifeline to keeping my students engaged and connected to learning…. Classes became the medicine students needed to find their voice and spark creativity.”

In 2021–22, YM classes were provided to all 565 students at Longfellow Elementary in person for the first time ever. Says Brooks, “Students developed skills needed to persevere and be successful in life. They learned to listen to each other, work as a team, and encourage each other through the process.”

In addition to the more than 1,000 music classes taught by YM faculty at Longfellow last year, students recorded and presented two virtual concerts on the school district’s YouTube page. These videos have received more than 4,500 views.

YM at Longfellow Elementary is a fully funded program supported by the California Arts Council, the City of Pasadena’s Cultural Affairs Division, RBC Foundation – USA, The Augustine Foundation, The Music Man Foundation, and the Helen and Will Webster Foundation.
