Message from the Board Chair

I

write on behalf of the Board with thanks for your support and engagement in these post-pandemic bouncing-back years. Participating in classes, taking lessons, attending recitals and performances, and lending your financial support has allowed us to share the joy of music with more community members. The launch of the World Music program, with its multi-generational Mariachi ensemble; the return of Jazz on Hill after a pandemic hiatus; and the exciting debut of the new contemporary music series, Wicked GOAT, aimed at the teen audience—all are evidence of PCM’s consistent liveliness and innovation. We have all read and experienced that music is integral to our happy, healthy lives; PCM’s stellar programs and faculty are indisputable leaders in this enriching effect. So as the Board and staff focused on strategic priorities this year, it is no surprise that a prime initiative is to increase our impact and community connections through our programs and collaborations. Stay tuned for much more on this in the coming year!

Speaking of staying tuned… the year ahead promises immense excitement! It is our 40th anniversary, in which we celebrate the many people PCM has touched. Our Common Ground campaign is now physically visible as we create new classrooms and studios, plus an outdoor performance venue for our ever-expanding programs. And we anticipate re-accreditation in 2024, one of only 18 community music schools in the country to be so recognized. All of this is possible because of you! We are so grateful.

Music is integral to our happy, healthy lives; PCM’s stellar programs and faculty are indisputable leaders in this enriching effect. 5

Laurie Sowd Chair of the Board

Director’s Letter

O

n January 8, 1984, our founders, Silke Sauppé and Wynne Stone first opened PCM’s doors in space rented from Mt Olive Lutheran Church in north central Pasadena. The school began with a small but exceptional faculty and a commitment to providing access to programs to under-resourced populations. Now 40 years later, these core values were affirmed anew by the site visitors from our accrediting agency who cited PCM as an exemplary community music school with numerous commendations on the quality of the faculty, programs, and the sterling outreach program at our adopted school, Longfellow Elementary School. We have many opportunities to deepen our impact on the community by building on these strengths. To that end, we have embarked on an ambitious campus improvement project that will create new program opportunities, and enrich the

We have embarked on an ambitious campus improvement project that will create new program opportunities, and enrich the on-campus experience. on-campus experience, while also engaging in new partnerships to broaden our impact beyond the campus. While recovering from the effects of the pandemic took longer than we hoped for, this past year demonstrated that we are well on our way. The commitment of our students, families, and donors was indispensable to this recovery. With this report we share highlights of the year as an expression of our gratitude for your support. 2022–23 Highlights

World Music Department In fall 2022, PCM launched its World Music Department. Aimed at providing opportunities to learn, perform, and enjoy music traditions from around the world. Offerings are designed to develop proficiency in various global music traditions, and to celebrate those traditions through public performances. As part of the launch, PCM reintroduced its intergenerational ensemble, Mariachi Pasadena! (suspended since March 2020), and offered a new series of Latin Percussion classes. PCM also introduced a free community drum circle, open to drummers of all ages and levels. An open house in August 2022 promoted and previewed the new offerings for the community. Joining PCM’s faculty to lead these new programs are Sarah Bauzá, Maira Solis, Clarice Cast, and Stevie Ray Hernandez.

Wicked GOAT PCM introduced Wicked GOAT, a new, concert series featuring contemporary music, performed by PCM faculty and friends. The series is co-curated by PCM faculty, Dr. Nic Gerpe and Megan Shung particularly with the teenage student in mind. The first concert, Fusion, explored music that crosses boundaries of style and genre, and featured composers including Sakari Dixon Vanderveer, Gernot Wolfgang, and others. Nature explored elements of the natural world—such as bird song, whale song, oceans, and landscapes—and included works by Juhi Bansal and Jenni Brandon. Folk featured music by Derrick Skye and Reena Esmail, among others. Each program incorporated multimedia experiences, and featured performance attire designed by up and coming fashion designers. Post-concert receptions were held in the courtyard with food and live student performances.

2022–23 Highlights

Jazz on Hill In May 2023, PCM’s annual Jazz on Hill returned after a 3-year hiatus. Launched in 2013, Jazz on Hill brings together the full spectrum of the PCM Jazz Studies community to celebrate a phenomenal jazz musician’s life and artistry. Jazz on Hill 2023 celebrated the work and career of Jazz legend and PCM’s own, Roy McCurdy. “We are incredibly fortunate to have someone like Roy on our faculty,” says Dr. Ray Briggs, 2022-23 Jazz Studies Chair. “With Roy’s extensive and very productive career, it is practically impossible to note everything that he has done. From working with THE greatest vocalists in jazz history like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Nancy Wilson to performing with THE leading instrumentalists of our tradition like Sonny Rollins and Cannonball Adderley, Roy is a living legend.” While most jazz events are structured in a way that attendees only get to experience the music in performance, Jazz on Hill offers a number of portals into the artist’s life and work, ultimately providing a deeper understanding of the music and the musician. It provides students— school-age and adults—and community members opportunities to engage with the artist in the intimate setting of an open interview in the morning, a masterclass/ ensemble coaching session in the afternoon, and a concert featuring our student groups, jazz faculty, and the guest artist in the evening. “Every Jazz on Hill I’ve been a part of has been a blast, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities the Conservatory has granted me to make life-long friendships, build a better musical repertoire, and bop out with some buddies.” —Andres Olmos ‘23

2022–23 Highlights

ArtNight Like Jazz on Hill, ArtNight also returned to PCM’s campus in 2022-23. Twice a year, the City of Pasadena partners with local arts organizations to present a citywide open house that highlights the rich cultural offerings of our community. PCM participated in both the fall and spring, opening its doors to over 300 audience members for each event and offering live music in multiple venues. ArtNight at PCM featured both classical and multicultural performances by faculty members and students (including Mariachi Pasadena!), as well as guest artists that included Gamelan Merdu Kumala, SO-CALidonians, a Brazilian Music Trio, and more. Audience members also enjoyed a drum circle led by World Music faculty member, Stevie Ray Hernandez.

10

Summer Concerts at Vroman’s For the last two years, PCM has partnered with Vroman’s Bookstore to present free public performances. Originally inspired by a desire to bring music to the bookstore’s outdoor courtyard, the Summer Music Series at Vroman’s has helped promote and celebrate renewed cultural and social engagement as our community emerged from the pandemic. Concerts showcased PCM’s exceptional faculty from the Jazz and World Music departments and featured a diverse range of musical traditions and cultures. The series has provided meaningful opportunities for our broader community to experience and enjoy music while broadening their perspectives and understanding. Audiences enjoyed performances by: Clarice Cast (Brazilian bossa-nova), Stevie Ray Hernandez (Latin Jazz and Salsa), Danny Janklow + Elevation Band (Jazz, Funk, and Indie Soul), Sherry Luchette (Jazz), Amy Rowe (Jazz), and The Megan Shung Quintet (Jazz and Folk).

2022–23 Highlights

Music For Life PCM has offered adult music history and appreciation classes with beloved instructors—like Priscilla Pawlicki and Dr. Ray Briggs—for nearly 20 years. In 2018, thanks to a grant from the National Guild for Community Arts Education and Lifetime Arts, PCM expanded its offerings to include ensembles for adults, such as recorder and ukulele, and launched the Adult Studies Department. During the pandemic, classes transitioned to virtual instruction and included special projects like virtual choirs and performances. Classes not only provided music instruction, they provided important opportunities for adult students to stay engaged during a time of isolation. Now, having returned to in person instruction for over two years, the Adult Studies course catalog for ensembles has expanded to include Glee Club, flute ensemble, two String Ensembles, guitar orchestra, and three Jazz Combos. Enrollment has grown from 9 in that first fall quarter to more than 60.

11

Adults who enroll in these classes include both beginners and amateurs who are returning to an instrument after many years away. A number of adult students are also parents of PCM alums and have

decided to enroll themselves now that their kids are grown. Xin Wen, after 18 years of supporting her two sons in their musical studies, enrolled herself in music classes at PCM in 2018. After a recorder recital—attended by her sons Albert and Eddie who are currently at Princeton and Northwestern, respectively—a PCM staff member commented on how the family roles had reversed. With a big smile she replied, “it’s my turn now.” For others, like John Swain, the joy of learning alongside other adults has been illuminating. “...the experience of playing with others—I had no idea. I mean, I knew everybody said that what it’s all about is playing with others. But you don’t really understand what that means until you experience it. And then it’s amazing. It’s such fun.”

Musical Interludes Between the Wars Musical Interludes explores connections between music, literature, history, and culture. The 2022-23 season presented three programs featuring works from the first half of the 20th century, written by composers from three countries: France, the U.S., and Russia. Key cultural and historical events between the wars (mostly) provided the backdrop for these music chronologies. The first program, France, included works for solo piano and two pianos by Debussy, Poulenc, and Ravel, as well as Messaien’s Quartet for the End of Time (performance dedicated to the late Olin Barrett).

20

The U.S. program included works for solo piano, string quartet, and two pianos by Beach, Ives, Barber, and Price. The program also premiered a new arrangement

of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue by composer Wesley Chu. We closed the season with a Russian program featuring works for cello and piano, clarinet trio, solo piano, and two pianos, by Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Kabalevsky, and Rachmaninoff. All programs were performed by PCM faculty and friends in Barrett Hall, which was designed by Frederick Kennedy in 1929 (also between the wars). PCM faculty member Brian Lauritzen and special guest Jennifer Miller Hammel hosted, providing historical connections and sharing how classical music evolved in these countries during this time. Each concert included a post-concert reception with fare provided by Julienne Fine Foods.

Building Common Ground In this time when so much divides us, learning, performing, and enjoying music provides substantive opportunities to leave those divisions behind, to forge connections, to find common ground. This $11M campus development project will introduce a music learning center and amphitheater, and includes the renovation of PCM’s administrative spaces. It will allow PCM to: • Develop new intergenerational programs; • Expand multicultural programming; • Create music technology programs that support 21st Century learning; and, • Strengthen the sense of community on campus through shared musical experiences among diverse groups of people.

24

Common Ground will transform our campus and enhance the learning experience for our students and the entire community for years to come. Construction is now underway and scheduled for completion by Spring 2025.

The vision for Common Ground has resonated with many—inspiring the highest levels of giving in PCM’s history, including three gifts over $1M. When we launched the campaign in May 2022, we had secured $5.6M. We just reached the $10M mark.

To learn more about how you can support Common Ground and be part of this transformational project, contact our Director of Development, Melissa Froehlich, at 626-683-3355 ext. 107 or mfroehlich@pasadenaconservatory.org.

Legacy Society Shortly after joining PCM as a piano student with Elizabeth Babor, Linda Gates Moore began supporting PCM as an annual donor. When she inherited her father’s treasured Steinway in 2018, she donated her Yamaha piano to PCM. Eventually, the time came to update her will and estate plans. Linda spoke with PCM’s Director of Development, Melissa Froehlich, about becoming a member of the Legacy Society and decided to designate a percentage of her estate to the school. “It is part of my personal compass. When I’m involved with an organization, I want to support it—especially non-profits such as PCM that make my community better. It’s my acknowledgement and ‘thank you’ for what this organization does to make my life more enriched.” Donors like Linda who remember PCM in their estate plans create a legacy and make a powerful and lasting impact on tomorrow’s musicians, audiences, and patrons. If you have included PCM in your estate plans, but do not see your name listed, please let us know so we can recognize your legacy gift and thank you.
