Nocturne for the Endless Void Max A. Friedman for two percussionists and two pianists with live electronics

©2021 AsherRose Music

2 Performance notes Setup: Staff 1: Tamtam (1 performer) Staff 2: Bass Drum (1 performer) Staves 3-4: Piano (2 performers) Live Electronics (monitored) The piano should be positioned center stage with the two performers on opposite sides (Player 3 closer to the soundboard, Player 4 at the keyboard). Its damper pedal should be depressed throughout the piece. The tamtam and bass drum should be placed on opposite sides of the stage. Each performer uses a superball, rubber head, or flumi mallet for the majority of the performance. Staves 1 and 3 should use a mallet with a small head, and Staves 2 and 4 should use a larger one. Additionally, Staff 2 requires a brush head mallet. Microphones (one for each stave) are positioned close to the instrument and should be movable in accordance with mallet strokes.

3 Electronics: Each microphone feeds into the following Max/MSP patch.

4 Notation: The score uses graphic notation in conjunction with conventional staff notation to indicate subtle shifts in mallet direction. The tamtam and bass drum parts include diagrams representing mallet motion along the instrument, for instance, clockwise along the edges: The piano parts include instances of a single note and a vertical line, indicating motion toward or away from the keys along a single string:

or multiple notes and a horizontal line, indicating glissandi along a limited set of strings:
