Annual Report 2013
This Annual Report acknowledges donations made to the Museum of Fine Arts during our 2013 fiscal year, January 1-December 31. Gifts supporting today’s operations and ensuring the Museum’s future are vital to fulfillment of our mission in the community.
Letter from the Director The vibrant community of the Museum of Fine Arts is defined by events bringing people together: inspirational new programs for young people; improvements and additions to the museum building; gifts of art to the permanent collection; inspiring exhibitions; and exciting events. As you will see in the pages of this Annual Report, 2013 offered marvelous examples of this type of community engagement. In many ways, the centerpiece of our year was the complete renovation of the permanent collection galleries and the Marly Room. With natural light now restored to the galleries along Beach Drive, the experience of visiting our collection has raised the bar of excellence. Among our principal exhibitions, Philip Pearlstein’s People, Places, Things brought a massive retrospective of one of our country’s greatest painters. The activities of the Margaret Acheson Stuart Society brought new excitement and won new friends. One of our most exciting new programs has been our partnership with Pinellas County schools. Seeing the impact of all sixth grade students visiting the MFA as part of their social studies curriculum is truly inspirational. These young minds are the future leaders of our community and are sharing the experience of 4,500 years of human history that helps them better understand the world around them. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Museum in 2015, it is with deep gratitude that we celebrate the outstanding dedication and support of those who believe in the mission of the Museum of Fine Arts. Connecting the community through art continues to be our goal. For young families visiting for the first time, or individuals attending one of the 200 public events offered during the year, we exist to open eyes, minds and hearts.

Exhibitions The Art of Golf November 3, 2012 to February 17, 2013
The first major museum exhibition in the United States devoted to this popular game and organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the National Galleries of Scotland, this exhibit showcased four centuries of golf and feature approximately 90 works by artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Hendrick Avercamp, Sir Henry Raeburn, Childe Hassam, George Bellows, Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol, and the celebrated photographer Harold Edgerton.
Phillip Pearlstein’s People, Places, Things March 2 to June 16, 2013
The exhibition’s comprehensive approach illuminated Pearlstein’s significant contribution to American realism, and with his recent work, demonstrated his unflagging craft and energy. The exhibition was organized by the Museum of Fine Arts and New York independent curator Patterson Sims.
Color Acting: Abstract Works from the Permanent Collection July 6 to September 22, 2013
Color Acting combined works from the permanent collection and special loans to show fluctuating properties of color and its effects on visual perception. Inspired by Josef Albers, the title references his statement that “Painting is color acting. The act is to change character and behavior, mood and tempo.”
Mixing Metaphors: The Aesthetic, the Social, and the Political in African American Art (Works from the Bank of America Collection) October 5, 2013 to January 5, 2014
These works from Bank of America and curated by art historian and photographer Deborah Willis focused on more than 90 paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, sculptures and mixed media works by thirty-six artists. Body politics, race, class and gender are a few of the topics that surface in these works of art, which depict moments from the extraordinary to the mundane.
Photographing the City February 9 to May 26, 2013
Photographing the City was developed by USF graduate students in a fall seminar taught by visiting Kennedy scholar Katherine Bussard, Associate Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago. Half of the classes were taught at the Museum, and many of the images are drawn from The Ludmila Dandrew and Chitranee Drapkin Collection, now numbering more than 14,000 works.
Pleasure Grounds and Restoring Spaces: Photographs of Our National Parks June 1 to October 6, 2013
At once a seemingly untouched virgin land and a territory of limitless opportunity for development, the American landscape has always fueled the imagination of artists. This exhibition from the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts included several photographs from the newest donations to The Ludmila Dandrew and Chitranee Drapkin Collection, which continues to enrich and expand the MFA’s photography collection.
New Acquisitions: Works on Paper and Photography October 26, 2013 to March 2, 2014
More than 40 exceptional works on paper and photographs, all added in the last five years, were on display. The MFA photography collection is one of the largest and most important in the Southeast and was admirably represented in this exhibition. Included were choice images by George Booth, Margaret Bourke-White, Ben Shahn, George Dureau, Sylvie Eyberg, Ernst Hass, Jason Hailey, Tom Kramer, Amanda Means, Arno Minkkinen, Edward Steichen, and Shen Wei.

Programs Education is central to the mission of the Museum of Fine Arts. The Museum provides a place for people of all ages to experience art, culture, history and ideas, and takes art into the community. The Museum’s docents complete a year-long art history class and then a year of internship to share their knowledge with the public in both general and specific tours and programs. The MFA collaborates with dozens of community organizations to connect the community through art. Renovation
With the last expansion doubling the Museum’s space in 2008, the permanent collection was the key area of focus in 2013. Thanks to the outstanding generosity of these donors, the newly renovated spaces including the Great Hall were reopened with a much-anticipated celebration in September 2013. Stuart Society Named for the Museum’s founder, The Stuart Society is the largest support organization of the Museum of Fine Arts with over 350 members and provisionals. The Society’s mission is to promote the welfare of the Museum; to stimulate public interest and participation in Museum’s activities; to increase the Museum’s general membership; and, to maintain a close acquaintance with the activities of the Museum. The Stuart Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in its own right, and as such, is a major philanthropic contributor to the MFA through heroic fundraising events that include the Plaza of Honor Bricks Project, Wine Weekend St. Pete, Art in Bloom, Affaires d’Art and SmARTly Dressed. Outright Gifts
Outright gifts can include cash, appreciated property, gifts of art or other tangible personal property. All cash gifts are 100% tax deductible.
Gifts of Securities
By giving appreciated securities to the Museum, donors may avoid paying capital gains tax and receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the gifts. For details on the transfer of stocks, please contact the Advancement Office.
Gifts of Real Estate
Real property can be deeded to the Museum and may warrant a sizeable tax deduction now while continuing to occupy the property for life. Your personal tax advisor may be able to help you select the best arrangement to suit your individual situation.
Planned Gifts
Planned gifts such as a charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, retained life estates, retirement plan designations, life insurance designations, or bequests may reduce inheritance taxes and benefit the Museum. Check with your financial advisor for the best plan, and let us know of your intent so we can recognize you as a member of our Legacy Society.
Naming Opportunities
