Lemurenheim An der mythischen Struktur der Kunst kann ebenso wenig Zweifel bestehen wie an der Willkürlichkeit des kartesianischen Weltbildes oder anthropozentrischer Paradigmen.

Animistische Vorstellungen durchqueren Religion und Kunst aber auch die Wissen­ schaft.

So konzeptuell und reflexiv die praktische Vorgangsweise der KünstlerInnen der Moderne auch sein mag, so ist den Kunstwerken doch ein mysteriöses Eigenleben inhärent und Marcel Duchamps „Großes Glas“ sendet ähnlich vitalistische Impulse aus wie Pablo Picassos „Guernica“.

Wie wahnsinnig also war Klee bei seinem „Geister-Luftzug“? Wie viel Ironie legte Tàpies 1947 in das Selbstporträt, in dem es von „esoterischen“ Zeichen und Symbolen wim­ melt? Inwieweit sah sich Beuys als Schamane, dessen Verwandlungsprozesse er in den fünfziger bis siebziger Jahren auf diversen Blättern festhielt? „Tischrücken“ bei Sigmar Polke, „Große Geister“ bei Thomas Schütte oder Wahrsage­ rei bei Christian Jankowski – immer wieder tauchen sie auf, die Motive des Irrationalen und die Szenerien des Unheimlichen. Ambivalentes, Enigmatisches, Fragwürdiges, ein Changieren zwischen „Spirit“ und „Esprit“ erweckt dieses Ausstellungsprojekt zum Leben.

Den Titel „Lemurenheim“ verdankt die Ausstellung einer Kooperation von Franz West (Skulptur) und Rudolf Stingel (Behausung) am Vorplatz des Museum Moderner Kunst in Salzburg im Jahr 2002.

Der skulpturale Kopf von Franz West hatte seinen Ursprung in einer Reihe von Brücken­köpfen für eine Brücke über den Wienfluss, die nicht am vorgesehenen Ort, dafür aber auf der Documenta IX zur Aufstellung kamen. Lemuren sind in der römi­ schen Mythologie dem Wasser entsprungene Geister und gleichzeitig Wests abstrakte Antwort auf das ihm nicht entsprechende formale Ansinnen, figurale Skulpturen zu verfassen.

There can be as little doubt in the mythical structure of art as there can be in the arbitrariness of the Cartesian world view or anthropocentric paradigms. Animistic ideas permeate religion and art, but also science.

As conceptual and reflexive as the practical approaches taken by Modernist artists may be, their works nonetheless manifest an inherent mysterious life of their own, and Marcel Duchamp's „Great Glass“ transmits similarly vitalistic impulses as Pablo Picasso's „Guernica“.

How crazy was Klee when it came to his „Geister-Luftzug“ (Ghost Draft)? How much irony is behind Tàpies's self-portrait from 1947, which teems with „esoteric“ signs and symbols? To what extent did Beuys see himself as a shaman, whose transformational processes he recorded on various sheets from the fifties to seventies?

Sigmar Polke's „Tischrücken“ (Seance), Thomas Schütte's „Große Geister“ (Big Ghosts), or Christian Jankowski's „Wahrsagerei“ (Fortune-Telling) – motifs of the irration­al and scenes of the uncanny appear time and again. The exhibition project is brought to life by the ambivalent, the enigmatic, the dubious, the oscillation between „spirit“ and „esprit“.

The exhibition takes its title, „Lemurenheim“ (Lemur Home), from a collaboration between Franz West (sculpture) and Rudolf Stingel (housing), organized in 2002 in the forecourt of the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg.

The sculptural head by Franz West stems from a series of „bridgeheads“ created for a bridge over the Wien river in Vienna, which were not exhibited in the intended location, but instead at Documenta IX. In Roman mythology, lemurs are spirits sprung from water; they are also West's abstract answer to the formal demand of creating figurative sculptures, which did not suit him.

Ein enthusiastisches Misstrauen gegen alles Zeichenhafte, das sich mit Ironie wappnet, teilt Franz West mit Sigmar Polke. Kunst war für Polke immer auch ernstes Spiel, gesteuerter Zufall und Geisterbeschwörung: „Ist doch wunderbar, wenn etwas passiert, was man nicht mit der normalen Koordinate erklären kann“, sagte Polke und bezog sich damit auch auf spiritistische Sitzungen, bei denen er angeblich Anweisungen von „höheren Wesen“ für seine Werke empfing. Seine Malerei, ein Drunter und Drüber von Farbtropfen und Farbverläufen auf leuchtendem Grund, scheint sich gleichsam von selbst zu malen. Polke, aber auch West haben diese Aufträge aus dem Jenseits zwar ironisiert doch führt auch bei ihnen an der Prämisse der Subjekthaftigkeit der Malerei kein Weg vorbei, wobei Adorno das Kunstwerk ganz allgemein als „kollektives Subjekt“ begriff, das sich auch dem Künstler gegenüber verselbständigt, lediglich durch ihn hindurchgeht.1 Sigmar Polke, Francis Bacon aber auch Joan Mitchell berichten, dass es ihnen während der Arbeit regelmäßig so vorkäme, als diktiere ihnen die Malerei ihr Tun. Joan Mitchell auf deren Bild Untitled von 1992 sich Ei Arakawas Leuchtdioden-Arbeit bezieht, hat diesen Zustand „no hands“ genannt und ihn mit einem Fahrrad verglichen, das fährt, ohne dass man die Hände am Lenkrad hält. Was Mitchell heute so aktuell macht, ist, wie sie ihren Subjektstatus auf die Malerei überträgt, wobei dieser Mythos einer selbsttätigen Malerei den Charakter einer mythischen Versuchsanordnung an­ nimmt bei der sie sich selbst zurücknimmt und bewusst versucht, sich auszustreichen.2 Man könnte diese Tatsachen als eine Wiederkehr von Aberglaube, Animismus oder Magie abtun. Gleichwohl ist in diesen Wahrnehmungen aber auch eine Produktions­ erfahrung festgehalten, von der vor allem surrealistische Schriftsteller wie André Breton berichtet haben. Er hatte das Gefühl, als würde sich ein Text wie von selbst schreiben.

Isabelle Graw schlägt daher vor, den Gedanken einer „agency“ zu konservieren ohne animistischen Szenarien das Wort zu reden.3 Modernistische künstlerische Verfahrensweisen an deren Beginn zuvorderst Édouard Manet steht, generieren regelmäßig einen phantasmatischen Eindruck einer An­ wesenheit, die sich zugleich als Abwesenheit erweist.4 So kommt Manets Bildern die Fähigkeit zu, ihr Außen zu ihrem Inneren zu erklären, sodass sie die Grenze zwischen Malerischem und Gesellschaftlichem einebnen. Entscheidend ist, dass sich der Über­ gang zwischen Innen und Außen als fließend erweist – bei Manet finden sich zahlreiche Balkongitter, von Sigmar Polke bis Ei Arakawa Rasterstrukturen, von Mondrian bis Heimo Zobernig Gitterstrukturen. Gleichermaßen sind die Bildträger aus Glas und Acryl bei Kerstin Brätsch oder Katja Novitskova Sinnbild einer durchlässig geworde­ nen Grenze zwischen privatem und öffentlichem Raum ebenso wie sie den fließenden Übergang zwischen dem Intrinsischen und dem Extrinsischen der Kunst gewährleisten.

West shares with Sigmar Polke an enthusiastic mistrust, braced with irony, of all that is symbolic. Art was always a serious game for Polke, controlled coincidence and the conjuring of sprits: „It's wonderful when something happens that you cannot explain with the normal coordinates“, Polke said, referring to spiritualistic sessions where he supposedly received instructions for his work from „higher beings“. His paintings, a jumble of color drops and gradients on luminous backgrounds, seem to almost paint themselves. Although both Polke and West ironized these instructions from the beyond, there is no way around the premise of the subjectivity of painting in their work either.

Adorno generally considered the work of art a „collective subject“, which also becomes independent of the artist and merely passes through him.1 Sigmar Polke, Francis Bacon, but also Joan Mitchell report that, while working, they regularly felt as though the painting was dictating their actions. Joan Mitchell, whose 1992 painting Untitled is referenced in Ei Arakawa's LED-piece, called this condition „no hands,“ comparing it to a bicycle being ridden without holding onto the handlebars.

What makes Mitchell so relevant today is how she transfers her subject status to painting, in which the myth of automatic painting takes on the character of a mythical experimental setup in which she takes a step back and deliberately tries to cancel herself out.2 One could dismiss these facts as a return of superstition, animism or magic.

Nonetheless, these perceptions also record an experience in terms of production, of which above all surrealist writers such as André Breton reported. He felt as though a text could virtually write itself. Isabelle Graw therefore proposes to preserve the idea of an „agency“ without advocating for animist scenarios.3 Modernist artistic practices, the beginnings of which are marked first and foremost by Édouard Manet, regularly generate the phantasmical impression of a presence that simultaneously proves to be an absence.4 Thus Manet's images have the ability to declare their exterior to be their interior, so that they level the border between the painterly and the social. What is decisive is that the transition between interior and exterior proves fluid – with Manet we find numerous balcony railings, from Sigmar Polke to Ei Arakawa we find raster structures, from Mondrian to Heimo Zobernig we find grid structures. Likewise, the glass and acrylic supporting surfaces in the work of Kerstin Brätsch and Katja Novitskova serve as representations of a boundary between private and public space that has become permeable, while they also ensure a smooth transition between the intrinsic and the extrinsic aspects of art.

2012 beginnt Kerstin Brätsch ihre Pinselstriche mithilfe des Glasmalermeisters Urs Rickenbach (dessen Dienste bereits Polke für seine Kirchenfenster des Grossmünsters in Zürich in Anspruch nahm) in Glas zu übersetzen. Damit verleiht sie einem Element, das konzeptuell eng an den körperlichen Ausdruck beim Malen gebunden ist, einen realen, materiellen Körper, der in seiner Transparenz jedoch echte Körperlichkeit zu negieren scheint.

In 2012, Kerstin Brätsch began translating her brushstrokes into glass with the help of master glassmaker Urs Rickenbach (whose services Polke too had used for his stained glass windows in the Grossmünster in Zurich). In doing so, she provides an element that is conceptually closely tied to the physical expression of painting a real, material body that, in its transparency, nonetheless seems to negate real corporeality.

Ei Arakawa inszeniert mit seinen Lichtskulpturen, bei denen Musik und gesprochener Text eine bedeutende Rolle spielen, eine irreale Atmosphäre. Er gruppiert grob gerasterte LED-Malereien, die auf Bildvorlagen anderer KünstlerInnen basieren im Raum und choreographiert die leuchtenden und tönenden Bilder zu einem audio­ visuellen Chor von nur bedingt kontrollierbarer audiovisueller Interaktion. Indem er seine Werke mit einem performativen Potential ausstattet, erzeugt er einen Raum kollektiver Kreativität.

Der rasche Fortschritt von Technologie, das Anschwellen der Datenmenge macht es schwierig, diese neue Realität aus Informationen zu begreifen.

Gleichzeitig wird das Vorstellungsvermögen von einer hyperrealen Bildwelt und einer bedrohlichen „Virtual Reality Revolution“ angegriffen, die einen wahrhaft surrealistischen und spekulativen Horror erzeugt.

Hito Steyerl stellt aber fest: „The vocabulary deployed for separating signal and noise is surprisingly pastoral: data ‚farming‘, ‚harvesting‘, ‚mining‘, and ‚extraction‘ are embraced as if we lived through another neolithic revolution with its own kind of magic formulas.“ 5 Ei Arakawa uses his light sculptures, in which music and spoken words play an important role, to evoke an unreal atmosphere. He groups coarsely pixilated LED paintings, based on images by other artists, within the space, choreographing the luminous and sonorous work into an audiovisual chorus of only partially controllable audiovisual interaction. By furnishing his work with performative potential, he creates a space of collective creativity.

The rapid advancement of technology and the swelling volume of data make it difficult to grasp this new reality through information.

At the same time, the vision of a hyperreal iconography and an ominous „virtual reality revolution,“ which create a truly surrealistic and speculative horror, are grappled with.

KAYA wurde von Kerstin Brätsch und Debo Eilers als gemeinsame Brand einer transpersonellen, künstlerischen Einheit entwickelt. Der Körper kann nicht länger als eigenständige Einheit gesehen werden. KAYA betreibt eine Abwertung eines anthro­ pozentrischen Humanismus zugunsten einer Sicht von Welt, die den Gegensatz zwischen Natur/Kultur und Human/Nicht-Human neu definiert, indem sie eine Idee einer nicht hierarchischen sondern vielmehr gleichwertigen Beziehung zwischen den unterschiedlichen Spezies kreiert. Dieser Effekt basiert auf der neuen Konvergenz von einst divergierenden Technologiesparten wie Nano-, Bio-, Informationstechnologie und kognitiver Wissenschaft.

KAYA was developed by Kerstin Brätsch and Debo Eilers as the joint branding for a transpersonal, artistic unit. The body can no longer be seen as an independent entity.

KAYA pursues the devaluation of an anthropocentric humanism in favor of a world view that redefines the contrast between nature/culture and human/non-human by creating an idea of a non-hierarchical and moreover equal relationship between the different species. This effect is based on the new convergence of once divergent technology sectors like nano-, bio-, and information technology as well as cognitive science.

Katja Novitskova nimmt die Stellung eines Mediums ein, das den vorgegebenen Datenkorpus in höchst bildreicher Form filtert und dem Rezipienten in liebevoll ver­dichteter Manier übermittelt. Und obwohl ihre Skulpturen in ihrer Erscheinungsform und Materiali­tät charakteristisch für unsere heutige Produktionskultur sind – Maschinen, bunte Gummipfeile, Marsbilder und eine Plastikfauna – ziehen sie doch eine ganz andere, aus Archäologie und Naturgeschichte altbekannte Welt in Betracht.

Sie kompiliert die diversen Inkarnationen von Daten aus verschiedenen Zeitaltern über Jahrtausende hinweg zu einer Schilderung einer erst im Entstehen begriffenen Welt – eine Archäologie der Zukunft, deren bevorzugtes Gebiet das Fantastische, das Unheimliche und Bestürzende des Imaginären ist: „Spirit, Curiosity and Opportunity“.6

Katja Novitskova takes the position of a medium that filters the given body of data in highly pictorial form, transmitting it to the recipient in a lovingly condensed manner.

And while the manifestation and materiality of her sculptures are characteristic of our present-day production culture – machines, colorful rubber arrows, images of Mars and a plastic fauna – they contemplate, however, a very different, familiar world known from archeology and natural history.

She compiles the various incarnations of data from different eras spanning thousands of years into a narrative of a nascent world – an archeology of the future, whose preferred area is the fantastic, the eerie, and the dismaying aspects of the imaginary: „Spirit, Curiosity and Opportunity“.6
